      I don’t care what anyone says. I love _Xanadu!_ As an 80s Child, I used to roller skate in my basement while listening and singing to the Soundtrack.
      _Xanadu_ introduced me to Olivia Newton John. And, no. I refuse to call something a “guilty pleasure” just to appear embarrassed. I either like it or I don’t!

      A movie can't ruin the career of someone who has not had a long and successful career-Gene Kelly's and Geena Davis' careers could be ruined, but Kelly Clarkson and the guy with her? Never heard of them. Never heard of many of these non-entities. If you're going to do a top twenty list, make sure there are twenty people or things _really_ worth talking about.
      And get rid of the beta male who narrated, and bring Rebecca back.

      The biggest reason I think it bombed was the idiotic title. It's like they only named it John Carter so they could change the title in the closing credits to John Carter of Mars (which they did). Unless people were Edgar Rice Burroughs fans, reading 100-year-old science fiction, just using his name alone was asking a lot. His Barsoon books never got anywhere near the press that his Tarzan books did. All that being said, as a huge fan of the books (and generally disliking movies based on books I've read), it was a pretty good movie, combining some parts of both the first and second book (A Princess of Mars and The Gods of Mars). Visually, I think they were more true to the books than anyone could ever expect, which was amazing. My biggest critique of the movie is that John Carter himself is portrayed as some reluctant, bitter hero who has to be forced into action, when in fact he's more of the Superman "truth, justice and the American way" kind of hero, who falls in love with Dejah Thoris at first sight and fights across the planet to save her.

      Its big failing was that it shouldn't have been associated with Burroughs. That would have allowed a different character name that people didn't associate with a doctor on "ER" and wouldn't have had fans of Burroughs coming to the theater armeed with rotten tomatoes. It wasn't a bad movie but it didn't have much to do with anything Burroughs wrote. I suspect it would have gone over better if they'd gone with the Asylum script for "A Princess of Mars" and given it Disney casting and production values.
      It didn't help that they just put the name out like everybody was supposed to know it. The promotion should have used the history. Before Luke Skywalker, before Buck Rogers, before Flash Gordon, there was . . .

    I love how much today Elizabeth Berkeley is able to look back with humor on Showgirls. In the Saved by the Bell Reboot, they make tongue in cheek references to the movie's plot. She says she hasn't flirted since her time in Vegas, it was a chaotic time shortly after college and involved pushing a woman down the stairs. Then later during a makeover scene they recreate some of the costumes and she even speaks like Nomi from the movie. Then when talking to Slater about it later, she says she was trying to be sexy but just looked insane, and Slater says that she was just following the crazy directions she was being given.

John Carter, for example, could have done well if it were approached as a Sci-Fi B movie based on a well-known pulp novel, but Disney wanted to make it into an overblown blockbuster. Bad idea.
    Batman and Robin had a great cast, but a terrible script, and a director who changed the tone so far from the Tim Burton movies that it was ridiculous, and it took the Batman franchise many years to recover and come back with Batman Begins.
    And Showgirls, well it just didn't have any hope to begin with. Bad script, bad direction, bad acting. It should have gotten every Razzie that year.

      For what it's worth, "Supergirl" launched Helen's career. Plus, she appeared in the 2015 TV series of the same title, this time as Supergirl's adoptive mother, Eliza Danvers, and even made three guest appearances as Lara-El on the TV series "Smallville".

    • @elimgarak7330
      @elimgarak7330 Рік тому

      1. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen did not end Connery's career by causing him to be no longer in demand for roles; *he* retired on his own, despite still being in great demand for roles, partly because The League was such a bad movie -- and partly because he was unhappy that he had gotten too old to be cast in romantic leading man roles, and figured he had enough money that he didn't need to suffer through the unimaginable humiliation of no longer being widely seen as the World's Sexiest Man.
      2. In order for a movie to ruin one's career, one has to have had a career to ruin. Get to Know Your Rabbit was Tommy's first film after TV. Perhaps you're arguing that the movie killed his TV career, but obviously the brothers' inability to get any work on TV after their show had everything to do with the public outcry against their controversial, liberal topics, jokes, and guests -- which led to the show's cancellation -- and nothing to do with a movie that Tommy starred in 3 years later.
      3. As another commenter has pointed out, Supergirl was literally the movie that launched Helen Slater's film career, which continues to this day, 38 years later. Sure; she's not the greatest actress and hasn't had the biggest roles, but she's worked consistently in film and TV over the past 40 years without having to adopt a bad Jack Nicholson impression like her little brother did. Hell, she even plays Supergirl's adoptive mother in the current TV series.

    A little harsh for Xanadu. Sure, it bombed when first released, however, it's gone on to have a HUGE cult following. Gene's performance incredible, especially given his advancing years. Soundtrack is still beloved to this day. Yep, special effects were cheesy, but hey it was 1980...bright colors were the thing. CGI was in its infancy with Star Wars pretty much bringing it to screens just 3 years earlier. Everyone in the industry were basically "learning as they went".

      They thought ONJ was going to draw people because she had been in Grease, but they were really watching Travolta. This was around the time of Welcome Back, Kotter, so he was a huge draw, no matter what the movie was.
