The "Consolation" or "Belated" Oscar. I'm not saying that _The Departed_ was a bad movie and not worthy of winning Best Director, but Scorsese losing for either Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino was simply criminal.
@@fabrislemos Absolutely correct! Director Michael Mann knows how to pull riveting performances from his actors. Russell Crow for The Insider, Tom Cruise for Collateral, and the entire cast of Heat, all should have gotten Oscars. Michael Mann never winning an Oscar for Best Director is just criminal. Ridley Scott is another director who was unceremoniously snubbed by the Academy.
@@PhantomFilmAustralia Raging Bull and Goodfellas, yes, but he didn't deserve it for Casino. I think it should have been Ron Howard for Apollo 13, who bizarrely wasn't nominated.
Cate Blanchett should have won for Elizabeth but she has the last laugh. She now has two Oscars and she will continue to work for years to come. You can’t say that about Paltrow.
I think Benigni was good. True enough, Benigni is always Benigni, he just made an epic movie so his benigniness was tightened within that firm context. But I agree. The Truman Show is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. And I love him in general.
I’m glad Jamie Lee Curtis has an Oscar but she wasn’t even the Best supporting actress in her movie. Stephanie Tsu and Angela Basset should have been battling each other with Jamie just glad to be there. Never did I think she’d win.
@@christiansoto1367 I'm sorry, but she is not very good in Halloween. The climax of that film, she is just screaming uncontrollably, falling over and making some dumb decisions. She was much better in H20 and the recent trilogy because her character had matured and was more intelligent than the generic "final girl".
For 1998, I agree that Edward Norton in AMERICAN HISTORY X is the better performance, but I think you're being too harsh on Roberto Benigni. Whatever you may think of LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, he does a good job combining physical comedy with pathos, being serious when he needs to be, always having an extra scheme up his sleeve. It's a strong tragi-comedic performance.
As an italian, he does (did, he almost quit acting, now he does television) the same role in every movie with minimal variations, he is basically just being himself in that movie. I'm not a fan of Life is beautiful and I find that win pretty absurd but I can't be mad about him because of how funny he is in his speeches😂 btw unlike it's said in the video here the movie is still well known and popular, it's that kind of movie that everyone has heard of, that you see at school and your grandma loves
For some reason I always thought he won for Godfather II, and I'm shocked that he didn't win for either film I'm not even a Pacino fan and I recognize that he's a standout among standouts in those movies. It took Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro to stay on the level he was on That's like a case for three of the best actors of all time, all giving some of their best work, but one didn't win despite being in both films. Kinda unbelievable
I remember being shocked that Liam Neeson didn't win an Oscar for Schindler's List, but when I heard it went to Tom Hanks for Philadelphia, I thought "Ah okay, that could've gone either way." The fact that Tommy Lee Jones won for The Fugitive that year over Ralph Fiennes?? That one is more of a shocker.
As the guy who has not yet seen Schindler's List, I can clearly say that the Fugitive was an excellent movie that wouldn't have worked without Tommy Lee Jones. He's that supporting actor who really is a second lead. Also, it could have been because they wanted to give that award to someone other than a Spielberg film. His two (two of his best and the most iconic) together won ten Oscars. That could have heavily influenced the ceremony
It's funny how people say "I wish more comedic performances won the Oscar", and then paradoxically include on their "worst winners lists" practically every Oscar winner for a comedic role...
I think the only comedic performances that have won at the Oscars and aren't so hated are Audrey Hepburn (Roman Holiday) and Jessica Tandy (Driving Miss Daisy)
Sandra Bullock deserved the Oscar, who do you think deserved it that year? Meryl Streep did more of the same in "Julie and Julia", the scenic force of "Preciosa" was Mo'nique, she swallowed Gaborey in that film, "Education" Carey Mulligan's film was boring and she gave a good performance, but not extraordinary , Helen Mirren had recently won for "The Queen"... don't you think that's an exaggeration of yours about Bullock. She was the best of 2009, whether you like it or not.
AL SHOULD HAVE FUCKIN HAD 3 OSCARS FOR DOG DAY AFTERNOON AND SERPICO AND GODFATHER , his oscar is the definition of "a win for a career not for the acting"
I agree, Al should have won for Godfather 1 and 2, but I can understand him not winning for Dog Day Afternoon. He was up against Jack Nicholson for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
Not only I hate the fact that Patrow won over Fernanda Montenegro dazzling performance but also Life is Beautiful won against Central Station in Best Foreign Film, an incredible movie
Any other actress would be better than Gwyneth Paltrow. The fact that "Central Station" lost to "Life is Beautiful" it was sad, but expected because of the theme. What I think is even worse is "Shakespeare in Love" (which is a nice film, but not Oscar worthy of Best Picture) winning over "Saving Private Ryan". That's absurd.
Something similar happened to the year before John Wayne's win. Cliff Robertson for Charly, seriously? That year should be O'Toole's win for The Lion in Winter to me.
I completely agree with this list. And it's impressive how much Miramax totally cursed the 1999 Oscars. It's an eternal stain on the Academy's history, even more so today knowing all the horrors involving Miramax's owners. A total shame.
Brazilians have a serious problem with Gwyneth 😂😂😂 Cate Blanchett, ok! We could understand… but Gwyneth… I mean! Fernanda is a legend, comparable to Isabelle Huppert in France, Judy Dench in UK and Meryl in Us
Thank you sooo much for complimenting Marissa Tomei's Oscar win!! It was such a great character and performance, and her courtroom scene at the end had some incredibly difficult dialogue to deliver in one stretch. She nailed it, and deserved the Oscar win.
Exactly. I heard rumors that Tomei didn't actually win, that the wrong name was read out and they just went with it. All I have to say is: if they were able to correct the winner when La-La Land was announced as the Best Picture winner when MOONLIGHT actually won, they would've done the same thing if Tomei was incorrectly announced as the winner. But they didn't do that, so that only means one thing: Tomei was the correct winner, and deservedly so.
Denzel Washington even said recently he was glad Al Pacino won since Denzel already won an Oscar for Glory. He admitted that Al was one of the actors that influenced him, and the fact that was his 8th nomination it was time for Al to get his Oscar.
Yea sure that’s fine but we’re looking at stats here And Al pacino did not deserve it Denzel did but I’m also glad he won cause that would have been a crime to not have al pacino get one Oscar
As much as Paltrow's performance is undeserving, I'm not as mad as most people about her not making the first list. Sandra Bullock is the all-time worst winner in the category, imo. It was a clear popularity win and Gabourey Sidibe was robbed. I also think Fernanda Montenegro should have won in 1999.
I honestly wonder how Sandra Bullock even has an acting career let alone an oscar. I don't dislike her or anything, but she should really be in Hallmark movies. Quite how she's managed to become an a-list actor is beyond me. The same goes for Mark Wahlberg. I have no idea how he's made a career as an actor and a highly paid one at that. I've never seen him do a good performance in anything including interviews. He's a charisma vacuum.
YES!! I SO AGREE WITH YOU!!! Ted Levine getting absolutely no nominations all award season was baffling. It takes a lot of courage and skills to portray a character so complex and sociopathic, and I think he and Brooke Smith's performances were extremely underrated. I think unfortunately due to the controversy of transphobia in TSOTL surrounding Bill and the stereotyping of LGBTQ+, it was definitely one of the biggest reasons why he wasn't nominated for anything.
Right. She gave a stunning performance. What a technique, and grace. This movie is one of the rare "Hollywood"'s movie I've seen in a long time. It was positively astounding. I knew East Asians's creativity wouldn't have disappointed me.
I agree so much with the Jaime Lee Curtis role. After watching Everything Everywhere All at Once I was shocked that she won an Oscar for that. Not that she was bad per se, but that's a pretty simple role that most actors would hace portrayed serviceable. Certainly not an awards worthy performance.
Judy Garland should have won for A Star is Born, I can't count how many Oscars Bette Davis should have won, she was a far better actress than Katherine Hepburn. Angela Bassett for What's Love Got to do With It, Glenn Close The World According to Garp or Fatal Attraction, and Annette Bening The Kids are Alright
Julia Roberts over Ellen Burstyn. Roberts played a pretty face with little more than sass underneath masquerading as hidden intelligence. Burstyn played a broken woman who lived in a delusion and just couldn't escape herself.
I really liked Peter O'Toole as an actor. Even late in life with films like "Troy" and "Ratatouille", he was still at the top of his game. The fact he never won an Oscar despite starring in all time classics like "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Lion in Winter", "The Last Emperor" and "Venus" is a travesty.
The supporting actor should have gone to Schindler’s List. Ralph Fiennes performance is chilling. He plays an outstanding villain in whatever movie he’s in. It’s voice acting or live action. He deserves an award.
Fiennes is one of my fave actors--he can do anything from heavy drama to flat out comedy with seemingly total ease. Of course he's never won and probably won't at this point. A shame.
@@robertkirby4822 RF has won so many acting awards that his exclusion at the Oscars has become a little ridiculous. He's posting the usual phenomenal reviews for his work in "Conclave." Maybe this will be his year.
I’ve argued that the reason Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List) and William H Macy (Fargo) din’t win was because their characters were garbage human beings.
That makes sense to me and then I think about how the great Anthony Hopkins won for playing Dr. Lecter. Maybe the monster has to be over the top to win?
To be fair Hopkins portrayal of Lector was charming in places and kind of likeable where as Ralph Fienes and Macy were completely unlikeable characters which is probably why they didn't win.
I see the point, but that just proves why they _should_ have won; ralph and william are the opposite of garbage human beings yk😅 honestly, same level as heath ledger and joker; heath was the total opposite of a murdering psychotic
Ralph Fiennes in Schindler’s list is one of the most horrifyingly menacing performances. The way you hate him, laugh at him, the way he plays the character perfectly as someone who is presenting as superior in every way, but between the lines you see he even hates himself. It gives me the creeps, he humanized that deplorable human somehow making you pity and loathe him at the same time.
Life is Beautiful is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I can't say I agree. I don't find it cringy, I found it very emotionally charged, and not only that, but it balances very different tones tones so well. Roberto Benigni's performance is the core of that movie, so I'm happy he was recognized for it. And as a non-American, I think the movie's legacy, at least in my country, was more impactful than the other examples mentioned. Just my opinion.
I haven't seen the film myself but judging by the IMDb and Letterboxd score, I think Brian is in the minority here. I hear almost nothing but love for Life Is Beautiful
Agree with you. Andrew Garfield hit it out of the park in Tick... Tick... Boom !!! Tommy Lee Jones deserved it for JFK, not for The Fugitive, that prize belonged to Ralph Fiennes. That night in 1999 Jim Carrey himself said HE should have been nominated instead of Benigni.
Denzel’s may not have been a career win. A lot of people forget, he’d won for Supporting Actor for GLORY in 1989. Training Day was his first Lead Actor win, but his second overall. Al, though… yea, that was a career win. He REALLY should’ve won for Godfather Part 2. How on earth Art Carney won over him that year, I have no clue.
@@heymistercarter. I don't recall Denzel winning for Glory.. And Art screamed career win, but I don't mind career wins.. Especially when the actor is so beloved like John Wayne.. it's nice to be acknowledged so late in the game.. And knowing that chance will never come again in their career…
Denzel Washington for Training Day - couldn't even finish watching that film. However Malcolm X saw at least 10 times over the years - one of my favorite films ever.
Did you actually see Wakanda Forever? That movie is a mediocre Marvel movie, not even one of the better Marvel movies. Basset is just fine in it. That does not earn an Oscar.
I write it off to the American taste that just like over-dramatic performances, but Roberto Beningi’s performance in life is beautiful is one of my favourite Oscar wins ever. I guess as an American you cannot fully appreciate the beauty of the lighthearted humour and sadness his character brings. It does not fall into either a comedic or a tragic performance and has a beautiful balance. His charisma is something that makes this movie so captivating. And yes, it is still much loved and still much talked about. Another one I disagree on is Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman, I believe his speech alone deserves an Oscar.
As soon as they cut the audio after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, proving it was not a bit, my first thought was “Does this mean Andrew Garfield wins?!?!?!”
How would you have felt if Gloria Stewart had won Supporting Actress for TITANIC? Yes, I know that movie already won a bajillion Oscars and Stewart doesn't have a ton of screen time, but she is such a memorable part of that movie, and her face and narration are very haunting and a huge part of why it has such emotional resonance. It's also an accomplishment that you really believe her and Kate Winslet are playing the same character, despite them looking and sounding so different.
That's my pick too, she was the heart of the whole movie. She made the character of Old Rose so memorable and deep especially with the good iconic lines she got to say like "a woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets" etc. She probably came close to winning as she tied the Sag award with Kim Basinger plus she was a Hollywood veteran so she did have a lot of goodwill. This would've been a career win that I don't think people would have hated. When people think of the movie, they don't just think of Jack and Rose. They also think of her and her narration and yes she and Kate Winslet were so well cast as their young and old counterparts.
@@dannielleburrus6117 You are not in the minority, I thought she deserved that win and I think Brian Rowe is wrong about that particular win, same as Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive.
Re Jamie Lee Curtis, people in the business wanted her to win because she used her star power to promote the little indie film EEAAO on the festival circuit before wide release and was very gracious toward her costars throughout, which folks here in town really notice and appreciate.
Ya know, the part of me that loves the hilariousness of "career Oscars" kinda wishes that Peter O'Toole would've gotten one for Supergirl. Just for fun! 😄
Robert Mitchums Max Cady in the original Cape Fear,Bette Midler in The Rose, James Cagney in The Roaring Twenties, Frank Sinatra in the Manchurian Candidate, Richard Burton in Becket...so many great performances overlooked
It's ironically underrated performance from Pacino in the Sent Of A Woman even though it's his only Oscar win. The character relies on his charm and acting skills
I'll DIE on this hill. Linda Blair should have won for THE EXORCIST and Tatum O'Neal should have won for LEAD actress. Tatum is in 1h.and 7 minutes of that film. The movie's running time is 1h and 42 minutes. How is THAT a supporting role??
Ralph Fiennes had a seminal performance as Amon Goethe. To this day, when I see Ralph Fiennes in anything, my stomach churns thinking about him as Amon Goethe. Forget Hannibal Lechter, Darth Vader, and other villains. Fienne’s Amon Goethe was the most horrific villain ever, and he was based on a real person which makes it all the more terrifying a performance.
That’s crazy you say that because I’ve never seen Schindler’s List (I will now) but he terrified me so much in The Menu that when I never trust his character in movies he’s in, even when he’s a protagonist like in Grand Budapest Hotel
Unpopular opinion, but I don't think Angela Bassett should have won for Black Panther. She does an amazing job and I love her, don't get me wrong, but when you compare that to her performances in other films like What's Love Got to Do With It, I feel like it would've been another case of someone getting a career Oscar rather than one for their best performance.
Awards aren't given based on talent but based on popularity, how much money is invested in the propaganda for the entire awards season and how gullible they are.
after the will smith slap incident and his subsequent win, I said that the Academy members should have gotten bumper stickers that said "don't blame me I voted for andrew garfield"
13:07 Jaw-dropping. I hadn't realized that. Wow, you are totally right. The first thing I ever saw Ralph Fiennes in was Schindler's List and that performance was so compelling it's literally hard for me not to see Goethe whenever Fiennes is on screen, even now.
@@valmacclinchy Yes. Ralph was quoted as saying he had a hard time sometimes finding anyone to eat lunch with him during the filming. Poor guy! I've met RF and you can't imagine anyone less like Amon Goeth. But at least he and Liam Neeson became close friends out of it. ❤
While I will concede that Jamie Lee Curtis’ Oscar win is probably more for her career and her riding the coattails of her movie, I would never put her on a Worst Oscar Win of All Time list. There are so many people much more deserving of that spot. It’s true, she doesn’t get to do as much as Stephanie Hsu (who really strides the line between supporting and lead) but she makes the most of what she has in the film. She was truly a supporting actress and I’m glad she finally won the Oscar.
Agreed, I actually love the win. She's such a cool actress and human being plus she's done amazing films. People have to stop acting like she has a bad filmography when it's actually very unique and is made up of various genres. She even shouted that out in her speech and acknowledged all the fans, she never forgot her roots or sold out to do an Oscar bait type movie. The fact that she won for a totally bonkers performance which stayed true to her own film career is very worth noting.
Curtis took that role and made Dierdre an actual person rather than a caricature. She packed a lot into her limited screen time - fighting, crying, deadpan comic delivery. Since she didn't have a lot of scenes, and because of her wardrobe, I remember that I was focused on her when she was on screen. Sure, it was probably a career Oscar, but there have been plenty of career Oscars for far less deserving work.
@@raymondtitano3819 Agree! It was a *SUPPORTING ROLE* and Curtis did a gr8 job. This was the one pick on this list that I don't agree with. The others, absolutely. I'd drop Curtis and throw Sandra Bullock in.
@@raymondtitano3819I completely agree with you. Jamie Lee Curtis was quite fascinating in this role. Her award was not stolen. The performance of Stephanie Hsu was astonishing, she deserved the same as Michelle Yeoh, but it can be only one queen at a time, and she has a great career ahead of her. This movie was so refreshing and its esthetic brilliant, thanks to East Asian's creativity.
I remember being shocked at how much hype 'As Good as it Gets" received at that Academy Awards. I watched that in the theaters and I thought it was too long, and realized since that it's plot was all over the place!
Ok my feelings are hurt! Scent of a Woman is one of my all time favorites, and Pacino’s performance is one of my favorites male performances, I even consider it THE BEST
That was a tough one. I'm not a huge fan of Julia's but she did what she does best in "Erin Brokovich." It was not an embarrassing win. It was just that Ellen Burstyn's performance was so brave and phenomenal. I do agree that she probably should have won, if this award was really based on the best performance.
Hot take: Roberto Benigni was nominated in a very competitive year, but the film “Life is Beautiful” is spectacular and it’s a performance as well as a film that walked so films like “Jojo Rabbit” could run. The final scene with Guido in the alleyway is an all-time and Brian should revisit the film. It’s heartbreaking. Should it have won over Edward Norton? The jury is still out on that one, but should it have been nominated?! Absolutely.
Have to love the irony that he won for a movie called “King Richard” and immediately turned himself into King Richard III… “An Oscar, an Oscar! My kingdom for an Oscar!”
Not Life is Beautiful. Yes it's the saccharin sentimental favorite however it hasn't age well at all. I know it's against the law to be critical of Holocaust movies but c'mon.
I get that you feel that the other Best Actress nominees in 1998 were better or more deserving, but I disagree that Helen Hunt's performance (or her material) wasn't that good. I was a fan of hers for a long time when the film came out, starting with "Project X". One of my friends would constantly argue with me about the talent of actors, directors, and which films deserved Oscars each year. I kept trying to convince him that Helen Hunt was awesome, but after seeing "Twister" he wasn't having it. It wasn't until a year and a half later that he watched "As Good As It Gets" and finally saw in her what I saw. "You were right, man. She's great!" AGAIG was a wonderful showcase for her, and I think that the antagonism between her and Jack was entirely the point. It isn't until the end that Carol finally decides to give Melvin a chance, so there really shouldn't have been many "nice scenes" between the characters until then. And since I was already a fan of hers, I was VERY pleased that Helen's Oscar win really gave her a career boost, as she then had major roles in FOUR films in the year 2000.
Hi Brian, I’ve been following your videos for quite a while and I usually enjoy them, even when I don’t personally agree with you. I never left you a sort of negative comment before, but this time I felt I had to say something. You said you didn’t like Life is beautiful and that’s fine, that’s your taste, I respect that. However, you’re wrong if you say that no one nowadays still talks or thinks about this movie. I can personally guarantee you that, here in Italy, La vita è bella is still an incredibly beloved and celebrated film and there are a lot of people, around the world, still enjoying it today. Have a good day Brian
I agree with everyone of these, especially Ralph Fiennes' loss. Here is another one that goes back a bit, but still rankles me to this day: 1975 Supporting Actor, George Burns for The Sunshine Boys over Chris Sarandon for Dog Day Afternoon. Absolutely ridiculous!
Benigni winning over Ian McKellen and Edward Norton was so egregious, it's not like the win did wonders for his career anyway. I never got the hype for John Wayne, guy never really showcased that much range in his career. Personally my favorite Western movie star is war hero turned actor Audie Murphy. It is upsetting that Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole never won Oscars. At least Peter won an honorary Oscar but Richard was treated so dirty by the film industry. Same feeling about that Kim Basinger win, there were better choices like Minnie Driver for Good Will Hunting and Gloria Stuart for Titanic. To me she's more as a pretty faced actress rather than someone with range.
Yes! A shame Burton and O’Toole never won. Both so good in Becket. Would’ve been cool if they tied for an Oscar, like Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand did one year. Sorry can’t remember the year. Esther S.
@@garyschwartz6777 Yeah and I don't mind career Oscar wins as long as the actor finally wins one. Richard and Peter should've gotten that luxury. Richard's last nom was for Equus and many thought he would pull off a consolation win (he did win a Golden Globe) but he lost to another Richard. Richard Dreyfuss for The Goodbye Girl.
Julia Roberts should easily be Top 10 for least deserving winner EVER. She is not a great actress to begin with but her winning for a Hallmark Channel level performance in a forgettable movie nobody even watches anymore is ridiculous. Most people now agree that Ellen Burstyn should have easily won for Requiem for a Dream. Requiem remains extremely popular to this day even with younger generations while Erin Brockovich has already been swept into the cinematic dustbin. I'd also throw Reese Witherspoon into the mix. She sucks in Walk the Line and her win, like Roberts' and Paltrow's, screams studio purchase.
John Wayne having an Oscar over Peter O’Toole is a travesty. I would have loved to see Andrew Garfield win. Javier Bardem was also fabulous in Being the Ricardos. As absolutely brilliant as Ralph Fiennes is in Schindler’s List, I’m still behind John Malkovich that year. He always blows me away and he was terrifying in that role. Paltrow is even more annoying because apparently she stole the film’s audition information from Winona Ryder. We could have had Winona in the role. 😭 Lastly, I am forever behind Pacino in Scent of a Woman. I’m apparently one of the few who love him in that film. 😂
Totally agree, especially the snub of Denzel in "Malcolm X." But, the Academy wasn't ready to give the award to an Af-American. His win for "Training Day" was basically "We're-sorry-we-didn't-give-the-Award-for-"Malcolm X." That was a much better performance. And, I also agree that Jim Carrey was overlooked for "The Truman Show." Great film and he was great in it.
1. Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side 2. Hillary Swank - Million dollar baby 3. Art Carney - Harry and Tonto 4. Joan Fontaine - Suspicion 5. Lee Marvin - Cat Ballou 6. Jody Foster - The Accused (over Glen Close, Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver) 7. Grace Kelly - The Country Girl (over Judy Garland in A Star is Born) 8. Robert Donat - Goodbye Mr Chips (over Jimmy Stewart) 9. Jimmy Stewart - The Philadelphia Story (over Henry Fonda) 10. Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line
@@cindiverbelun1802 That scene was Melo dramatic nonsense. Every actor/actress that plays a disabled character and every actress that does a passable Southern accent, in a dramatic role gets an unwarranted bump by the Academy... Cheesey and predictable.
@@mikedbigame3398guess you haven’t read my responses elsewhere on this thread. I said the same thing, the Academy seems to nominate and award most actors who play roles with disabilities (Hoffman/Rain Man, Hanks/Forrest Gump, Day-Lewis/Left Foot, Matlin/Lesser God. About the only exceptions I can think of in terms of an award not happening on this were De Niro/Awakenings, and Crowe/Beautiful Mind - but that was his own stupidity tantrum).. But in this case, Hillary Swank is a wonderful actress. I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one.
My vote: Katharine Hepburn for "Morning Glory" AND "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" Neither performance can hold a candle to her work in "Alice Adams" or "The African Queen".
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was a masterpiece from both Spencer and Kate. Kate toned down her performance and was mesmerising...Spencer's final speech was the best performance in film. Sidney Poitier was magnificent.
Ryan deserved it way more than she did. 2017 was a bizarre year for the Oscar’s. Casey affleck winning only to get publicly disgraced and banned from appearing the next year. The whole best picture fiasco. And it was most notable in Best Actress. Meryl Streep getting nominated for a comedy no one saw, while Amy Adams and Taraji P Henson got totally snubbed
I agree about Jamie Lee Curtis! I thought it was insane that it went to her. BOTH Jamie Lee Curtis’ co-star in the same movie, Stephanie Shu AND Angela Bassett in Wakanda Forever, were both so much better than Jamie Lee Curtis was. I was frankly shaking my head that night. As for Will Smith, he should have won for other movies he had done like Concussion and Pursuit of Happyness (and if you have not seen “Emancipation”, trust me you are missing out) but King Richard was not even close to Will Smith’s best. TOTALLY agree about Helen Hunt in as good as it gets too! I 100% TOTALLY agree that Roberto Benini winning over Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan AND Shakespeare in Love beating out Saving Private for best picture that year were suspicious at best and completely unacceptable, even this many years later! Saving Private Ryan was robbed of all the awards it rightly deserved!!
Angela Bassett in Wakanda Forever would have been another career win. That performance is fine but the movie was very average. Not Oscar caliber at all. Jamie was very good in a far superior movie and then you take into account her entire career and it equals a win.
I really liked Will Smith in "Enemy of the State" also liked him very much in Concussion. However, after his përformance slapping Chris Rock - lost all respect for him esp. after he was laughing at Rock's comment till he got the ëye"from his unpleasant wife.
I heard before watching EEAAO that Jamie Lee Curtis's Oscar win was undeserved or just a career Oscar, then I watched the movie itself and I couldn't understand that sentiment at all. I loved her in the movie, she was excellent. Her performance was both hilarious and incredibly moving. She absolutely deserved her Oscar.
I was quite young when I saw Life is Beautiful and I remember it breaking my heart. Roberto was an oddball but I have to guess that the subject matter being as sensitive as it was was definitely a factor in why he won. I rewatched it maybe once again afterwards but movies like that aren't really rewatchable because of the sensitive subject matter. I watched Sophie's Choice twice and Requiem for a Dream probably 3 times because they were so emotionally challenging. I'm not comparing by any means, I'm just saying that some movies are easily rewatchable because they don't take so much of you at the end
I adore Life is Beautiful, and I don’t agree on you saying no one talks about it anymore. I know tons of people who still talk about and adore that movie. Wish you were more respectful to those of us who love that movie😡
I'm not a fan of that movie but I respect those who love it and it's fine. This Brian guy has his own biases and it's showing a lot in his recent videos. I agree that he should show some respect because he's been trashing stuff and being a tad too disrespectful lately on some takes.
I think the main thing is exactly Benini's ACTOR win. His performance is really quite farce-y, bafoonish, over the top comedy and not in the way/style of the Academy. I was, as a European and a huge Italian cinema school fan kinda flattered for Academy choice for the Best Picture - deep down disagreed (Central Station is more of a universally deep and cinematic language-wise more relatable, self-explanatory movie), but understood. Sentimental, positive but WAR FILM. Hollywood adoooores WW2 ( and WW1 and any war to be honest)))) done with terrifying and gore detail and not as a backdrop, but as a main theme))) but choosing Benini for the Best Actor - ahem.... I almost fell off of my chair and not in the best way)) my parents watched the live broadcast with me that night, mum also was shocked, dad (a theatrical director) said - well, someone in the Academy finally had developed A GOOD TASTE))) For him Benini was great, exactly because this performance was over the top and absolutely different in a row of typical, predictable wins from decades before. But for me and mum it was a bit too much, felt wrong. The same win would be great in the Berlin, Cannes, Venice cultural and traditional frame, sure. But Hollywood trying to play "unconventional" in order to NOT GIVE IT to the ones who truly are deserving of the prize - that's... .... that's... that's both silly and vile to me.
You know when actors are given consolation Oscars. It happens all the time. My worst win was 1983 Best Supporting Actress Jessica Lange for "Tootsie". Teri Garr, in the same film, was ROBBED!!!! Another was 1987's Best Actress Marlee Matlin for "Children of A Lesser God". A deaf woman winning an Oscar for playing a deaf woman?? YIKES!!!! Sigourney Weaver was robbed for her performance in "Aliens".
Again, STRONGLY agree with #10! I was expecting Angela Bassett and would have taken Stephanie Hsu, but Jamie Lee Curtis’ role and performance was NOT strong enough IMO.
Ian McKellen should absolutely have won for Gods and Monsters. Helen hunt had ZERO chemistry w Jack Nicholson. Why the f wasn't Pam Grier nominated??? Edward Norton should've won something.

Because Tommy Lee Jones won for The Fugitive.
As the guy who has not yet seen Schindler's List, I can clearly say that the Fugitive was an excellent movie that wouldn't have worked without Tommy Lee Jones. He's that supporting actor who really is a second lead.

Nah it was a terrible Oscar win. It was an extended cameo and they have her an Oscar for campaigning her ass off and because of who her parents were
@@raymondtitano3819I completely agree with you.
Just watched it last week and enjoyed it more than ever. Especially the tango and the speech at school.
@@whaaat3632 the Speech at school: Impeccable👏🏻🙌🏻
Ellen Burstyn should have won for Requium instead of Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich.
Ellen Burston also should’ve won for the exorcist rather than Tatum O’Neal a nine-year-old in her first movie.
@@lindamccane4404 also for A Requiem for a dream over Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich.
Absolutely.
Will Smith, the most embarrassing Oscar win of all time having nothing to do with the movie.
That really was an embarrassing moment of all time at the Academy Awards. There is no coming back from that.
Token
He should have been kicked out after that action , not given an ovation later. Ugh
Have to love the irony that he won for a movie called “King Richard” and immediately turned himself into King Richard III…
“An Oscar, an Oscar! My kingdom for an Oscar!”
@@janerobinson4693totally agree he should have been escorted outside and handed over to the police
I think a great video you should do is which Foreign Language winners should have on Best Picture instead of the actual winner
What about Julianne Moore for Boogie Nights the year of Good Will Hunting and Titanic?
Yes! A shame Burton and O’Toole never won. Both so good in Becket. Would’ve been cool if they tied for an Oscar, like Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand did one year. Sorry can’t remember the year. Esther S.
@@BFA100 I'm not a fan of Boogie Nights but Julianne Moore wouldn't have been a bad win for sure.
@@navidhudson7065 Yes, talk about an undeserved win.
Lastly, I am forever behind Pacino in Scent of a Woman.
Yes, Malcolm X was a great movie. Denzel was amazing in that role.
Michelle pfeiffer for fabulous baker boys 1989 over Jessica Tandy. She should have won.
I agree
I actually loved Renee Zellweger in Cold Mountain. I thought she was funny and original and that the film needed her energy.
I do as well. I had less than zero expectations for Cold Mountain but it’s actually a fantastic film that’s beautifully shot
Agreed
The Oscar’s make no sense, oftentimes. Definitely. I’m just a nobody moviegoer and I have no interest in the Oscar’s because they make no sense.
1. Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
2. Hillary Swank - Million dollar baby
3. Art Carney - Harry and Tonto
4. Joan Fontaine - Suspicion
5. Lee Marvin - Cat Ballou
6. Jody Foster - The Accused (over Glen Close, Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver)
7. Grace Kelly - The Country Girl (over Judy Garland in A Star is Born)
8. Robert Donat - Goodbye Mr Chips (over Jimmy Stewart)
9. Jimmy Stewart - The Philadelphia Story (over Henry Fonda)
10. Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line
Excuse me? I loved Hillary Swank in Million Dollar Baby. Her last scene with Clint Eastwood was total magic. What didn’t you like?
Fernanda Montenegro was robbed.
I think that benedict cumberbach should have won for the power of the dog
💯
I love your words❤
My vote: Katharine Hepburn for "Morning Glory" AND "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" Neither performance can hold a candle to her work in "Alice Adams" or "The African Queen".
Agreed!
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was a masterpiece from both Spencer and Kate. Kate toned down her performance and was mesmerising...Spencer's final speech was the best performance in film. Sidney Poitier was magnificent.
Emma Stone in La La Land. I hated that movie and her character. She was blah and the fact that she now has 2 Oscars infuriates me.
Thank you! I feel exactly the same. Hell I think La La Land as a whole was so overrated. I mean look at Damien Chazelle's flop Babylon lol
Isabelle Huppert deserved the Oscar for Elle.
Judy Dench for Shakespeare in Love was a consolation prize for sure .
Bassett was so over the top it was ridiculous. No concept of less is more with her. She resorts to histrionics.
I disagree that Curtis should not have won. She gave a terrific performance.
@@LJ-ht4zsI’m not here to discuss his behavior or actions outside of his movie roles. I am discussing his movie performances.
Worst:
Tommy Lee Jones - should have gone to Ralph Fiennes for Schindler’s List (who still hasn’t won!)
Jamie Lee Curtis - EEAAO - should have gone to Kerry Condon for Banshees. Career Award.
Helen Hunt - As Good As It Gets - should have gone to Kate Winslet for Titanic. or Helena Bonham Carter for Wings of the Dove (who still hasn’t won!)
Kim Bassinger - LA Confidential - should have gone to Joan Cusack (as she still hasn’t won). mediocre actress.
Gwyneth Paltrow - Shakespeare In Love - should have gone to Emily Watson (as she still hasn’t won). mediocre actress.
Roberto Benigni - bad actor. Should have gone to Ian McKellen for Gods and Monsters (who still hasn’t won!)
Burton and Peter O’Toole should have won Oscars!
Will Smith - King Richard 👋 - should have gone to Andrew Garfield for Tick Tick Boom!
Where is: Brendan Fraser - The Whale - should have gone to Colin Farrell for Banshees!
I doubt Ian McKellen is getting one at this point but Christopher Plummer was also really old when he won so who the hell knows 🤷♂️
Fiennes has early buzz for a movie called Conclave, we’ll see how that goes
John Wayne should have been nominated for the shootist. I think it was his best film. Imo. The whole cast was wonderful. What a way to end his movie career. Plus, its aged well. And it didn't have him opposite some young female as a love interest. Lauren Bacall played an excellent role as someone who really didn't like Wayne's character Books.
Al Pacino Is a NEVER bad winner.
will never be
He is the supreme actor to me.
as much as I like Pacino as an actor, his Oscar nomination for Glengarry Glen Ross should rightfully have gone to Jack Lemmon. Ironically, Lemmon's Best Actor Oscar for Save The Tiger in '73 should have gone to Pacino for Serpico.
@@MrEab2010 I totally concur with you! No comparison to "Serpico" that year.
