  • In this video I show you how I transfer into my bath tub. I love having a tub and do not use a shower chair. Being able to transfer this way helps you not need to take a shower chair when you travel and also allows you to enjoy lounging in the tub

When I was living at home I use to have a tub. There was a chair next to the tub that I could set on , then put my legs over the tub and then pull myself so I'd be setting on the edge of the tub, then I'd just let myself down into the water. But when I was ready to get out I'd turn over on to my knees and pull myself up on to the side of the tub. I take showers now because a doctor told me with me being excusable to infections I shouldn't soaked in the tub. This was one thing that I loved to do to.

I don't like a shower chair either. LOL! I will try your method which seems easier. I was going in sideways. I don't think my muscles are strong enough to get into the wheelchair from the shower. I have a storage bin I put at the toilet and a stool in from of the bin. After putting my shoes, braces on I get up on the stool, then up on the storage bin and I put one hand on my wheelchair(across from toilet) and the other hand on the lid and then lift onto the toilet.

Hello Kristen, Have you considered using the Mabis DMI Healthcare Transfer board when you`re doing transfers also you should try the Bellavita Bath Chair lift it has a water proof remote control it rises up to your height so you`ll be able to transfer onto it from your wheelchair using the transfer board. The chair goes all the way down into the tub and the backrest reclines 50 degrees; the chair has suction cups to ensure that it stays firmly planted into the tub. It folds so that you can take it with you wherever you go. They have an optional headrest accessory the chair comes in white or grey and for the padding you have a choice of White, Grey and I think Blue. If you have Medicaid they will cover the cost All you have to do get a prescription from your Primary Care Physician and a letter of Medical Necessity from a social that works closely with your Dr. and is familiar with your case. I don`t remember where I ordered from or i`d tell you what i do remember is sending the paper to the surgical supply store (because that`s where a majority of Durable Medical Equipment is available) and the guy processed the paperwork and the chair was delivered to my front door. I hope this was helpful. I was born with Cerebral Palsy and i`m 27 so I know what its like to want to maintain your independence and your freedom.

+kiana gomillion Hey Kiana! Thanks for the feedback. I actually did just get one of those transfer boards. I have not figured out a safe way to use it alone. It's helpful if there is someone with me but it slips if they don't hold it. Also things have to be the exact level for it to work. I'm probably doing it wrong lol. Any tips? After not using one for 33 years it's been an interesting learning curve lol. I hope people read your comment about the shouwer chair. Right now I am happy doing things like I am in order to keep my muscles strong but certainly might get one in the future. I do not have medicaid though. Thanks for your support! Keep the feedback coming!

Another Great Video Kristen... You are very brave & must be very strong to be able to do some of those transfers. I always worry about my chair tipping on me while doing certain transfers...I've noticed in your videos that you do not have foot rests on your chair & was wondering does that make it easier for positioning your chair for transferring? I have footrests on my chair which sometimes make certain angles for transferring more difficult. I really enjoy watching your videos & I look forward to seeing many more.

I do have footrest. They are just not the ones that come off and are very close to the chair. They are metal and completely attached. Maybe in my vacuuming video you can see them better. I'll have to look again. Our chairs are made for us to be able to transfer some. The only way I think my chair may fall over is when I transfer to the floor because I sit on the foot rest (well my butt tries to fit lol) Otherwise I am on the seat par t of my chair so I know it won't fall. The most important thing is to make sure your brakes are tightened.

Hi Kristen, I too have Spina Bifida. I live in a small studio with only a small shower. It's tough just trying to get out of the bathroom without falling on the wet tile floor. Getting out of your bathtub seems to be a struggle. You may have tried this already, but I was wondering, are you able to get on your knees in the tub, then pull yourself onto the edge of the tub. From there transfer to the chair? Just wondering. Hope you are doing well. 😃

I now use a shower chair. It wasn't a struggle at that time. My arms are too short to lift me high enough to get m on the edge of the tub. Never learned that way and dont feel safe.

I notice you have three ‘thumbs downs’? You method looks perfectly sensible for your particular ability and disability.

Some people just thumbs down because THEY can't do it or even if it's just because they either don't like me or are jealous of my channel. I had one chick that had na SB channel and would thumbs down every video of mine. She didn't realize thatjust the simple fact that she interacted with my video was a good sign to youtube lol. It doesn't bother me. Thankfully thumbs down does not affect the channel. Not that there's anything to affect anymore since monetization is being taken away.

Or maybe you do have footrests lol, I for some reason didn't think you had.
