  • In this video I introduce you to my friend Tara who has a cute little sports car and she shows you how she transfers in and out of it. Her level is T12 with Spina Bifida. She also talks about what to consider when you are wanting to get a car instead of a van as a disabled driver.

    Awesome video and RX8, sweet ride. I'm T7/8 paraplegic due to a motorcycle accident. I drive a BMW 335i convertible so I can feel the wind and sun. My wheelchair is placed behind the passenger seat the same way as yours, but the top has to be down and its an overhead lift. Thank goodness for TiLite wheelchairs and sunny days in Florida. Thank for posting this video.

    Excellent film. I'm an L1 para due to SCI. I have a sports car and being young, I get a lot of points and stares and comments from older people in handicapped parking spots. Living in the UK we have right hand drive cars so I'm doing everything from the opposite side of the car.

    Great clip. When I got out of the hospital in 2005 - T5 complete SCI I sold my Acura and bought a Saturn Ion on the advice of another paraplegic. I had a Menox Hand control installed and quickly got used to enjoying being back on the road. A couple of years later I purchased a Toyota Sienna with the all the modifications. So now I have the option of two vehicles when ever I want, providing my daughter hasn't stolen my car from me. The van does have the advantage of a quick load when it is raining or snowing. But I like driving the car a lot more.

    Great video, thank you for sharing it with us. I use to do the same thing when i had a 1990 camaro. But i wouldn't take my wheels off. I would just fold the chair and slide it behind me. It was a tight fit but it worked. And it was much faster putting my chair in and out of the car. etc.

    Great, informative video! I'm an L-2 Spina Bifida and I drive a mini van but don't have a lift so I get in via the passenger side sliding door, put my chair in and the crawl between the two front bucket seats and into the driver's seat and away I go. Sounds complicated? It is! I'm think my next vehicle will be a two door sedan and will put my chair in as demonstrated. A word to the wise- I anyone puts the big wheels on your chair, make sure they are properly seated and lock. Driving a three wheel chair is not fun! I had the unfortunate experience with this!! LOL!

    As an old Chinese Taoist/Buddhist, I would like to say you are a "brave girl" for making this video.
    Most if not all Asian, especially Chinese will not make a video of this kind to help others as they will find it very embarrassing & will "lose face" or whatever.
    Even though I am a normal person, I still like to thank you for this video clip as I believe it will help others who are Paraplegic.

    I had a dear friend, Sam, who drove a 2007 Saturn Ion quad coupe because he had to use a wheelchair and could get it into the back seat without taking it apart. His brother, Bill, bought a Mazda RX8 quad coupe like this one in 2012 so Sam could get his chair in and out easier than in Bill's old car.. Bill was replacing a tiny car with a stick shift after he'd had an injury - he thought it would be a good idea if he got a car Sam could drive also, in case he needed a ride to work or Sam needed to have his car worked on . Bill had hand controls put on his Mazda so Sam could drive his car, too. Sam loved to drive his brother's car. He liked his own car, because he didn't have to take his wheels off to get his chair in the back seat, but his brother's was more fun to drive. I knew what Sam had to do to transfer into his car, I wasn't sure how he would've transferred into his brother's car. This is probably very close to what he had to do. Thank you for posting this.

    Very informative and useful vid you two. I became T10 paraplegic about 2 yrs ago and have been wanting to get back to driving myself around again. I was wondering about the retrofit of the Mazda and how much that costs. I also need a way to get a better chair like yours(TiLite ZR) as medicaid gave me a crap one for little girls. I've watched your video as well as a few others and i notice it seems a little easier with the suicide doors. Right now i have a 07 impala LS, i normally put my chair in by carrying everything over my chest a part at a time. Wheels first then the frame, my injury is very low L1 L2 so i have a lot my trunk control and upper body strength then most but like anybody i have days when i'm tired and it's a hassle to wrestle the chair in the car. But looking at these videos have given me some ideas on how to make things a little easier so i want to say thank you...

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  8 років тому +2

      Jodi J I completely agree with you. Although I tend to take the question "what's wrong with you" as not meaning it in a bad way and just say "Nothing is wrong with me but i have SB. What else would you like to know?...." That let's them know there's different ways to ask a question but also politely answers them and encourages them to ask more questions.

      I pause for a few seconds then say, "Nothing is wrong with me" emphasizing the 'wrong'. I know they aren't trying to be rude but some people (like me) might take it that way. :) For instance, people (I hope) don't say, "Why are you fat?" lol!

      Lots of people do everything anyone else can do with just one arm. There are ways...what are you wanting to learn to do that you think you cant? If people can drive cars that cant move from the neck down (its happening btw) then living with one arm is adaptable....not trying to minimize your struggles. just trying to encourage you that there are ways :) ill give suggestions in any way i can. sometimes its hard to think outside of the box when you are new to a disability.

    @jodij6280 8 років тому +2

    I had a 2-door Chevy Cavalier for 17 years and I pulled the chair into the backseat without taking the wheels off. I have a question for Tara. Did the wheels ever roll away or tip over to where you couldn't reach them? I would be afraid of that happening.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  8 років тому +1

      +Jodi J I know for a fact her chair has rolled away a few times lol. I tend to lock one break and just pull my chair. Also if I am able to park with the front end of the car going "down the hill" if there is a hill the chair would roll into my door instead of away from the car. On flat ground most of the time you are safe for it not to roll but not always lol

I drive a minivan with all the bells and whistles for a person with my abilities. I often drive alone, and also get giggles and chuckles out of people's reactions when I park in the handicapped parking, and then start busting out with my wheelchair. Because I couldn't possibly be a disabled woman running some errands on my own. *gasp!* lol

    It's great to see how others manage their chairs and cars! At this point I'm still ambulatory to some degree, so I just put my chair in the boot and then walk to the driver's seat, but if/when my disease progresses to the point where I cannot walk at all, I'll have to consider a number of things to manage my chair. Unfortunately, twisting to put my chair behind my seat isn't going to be feasible for me, but lifting it across my body may also be an issue. Hmmmmm. Thank you for posting this!

    • @bassoprimo
      @bassoprimo 4 роки тому

      I get it, I am about at that point now - I am still slightly ambulant and can drive an automatic transmission vehicle with high seating, but having nightmares as my carer can't now handle my dismantlable powerchair any more due to shoulder damage so I am able to do no more than car to house to car at the moment - the solutions for me seem to be non-existent, even if I spend my entire life savings plus all of my PIP benefit and would be unable to afford to then use it! Most smaller WAVs aren't suitable at all unless you have a *very* able-bodied assistant to secure the chair, it is potentially lethal and illegal to drive with one not secured and a drive-from wheelchair van (it would have to be very big as I am!) isn't' an option at all as I simply couldn't get one parked and turned around in my street 80% of the day and night nor even get it into my street about 50% of the time as so many delivery drivers find out!

    I am curious how the car is set up for you to drive it, throttle and braking as your feet can't do it for you I am a mechanic and am very fortunate to be able to walk but if I was in a chair I would still do all the things that others do and driving would be on that list I would like to know how the vehicle is setup mechanically and if there were laws to get around setting it up that way.

      Thanks for your comment. I can't speak for Tara but I have no desire to walk. I know that's hard to comprehend for some, but that's just my perspective. Figured I would share so that people will not always assume we are hoping to walk one day. Please don't think I am upset. I am not. I just pray for a world where people don't always assume we are more whole as one who walks versus one who doesn't.

      You mean one that folds up? Most of those are heavy so I don't think they would be as easy. Plus it looks like Tara has her technique down

      +David Barker me too! I wish I knew why people didn't watch my videos all the way through. It really messes things up. But I can't have everything I want so I try to figure it out on my own.

    I very much need this wheelchair! What kind is it? I can't lift my chair in and out of my car because it is so heavy and this doesn't leave me with very many places I can go.

      Gayla, I don't know if you ever found out, but this looks like the same Ti-Lite ZRa my daughter uses. I believe the it weighs around 10.7 lbs. Hope this helps if you needed the info.

    • @sunshinetaradise
      @sunshinetaradise 10 років тому

      Gayla I have the TiLite ZR. Russell was correct except the ZR that I have is less adjustable than the ZRA. When looking for a chair you need to consider a rigid frame with less moveable/adjustable parts and take into consideration the weight of special backs if you need them ( I do not) and the weight of the cushion. By the way this is Tara and this is my youtube handle/channel

      superprettypinkkitty this is the TiLite ZR. I'm not sure of the exact weight but you can go onto Tilite's website and they will have all the specs. I also have spinergy wheels which are not standard with this chair that helps with the weight (by the way I'm Tara, the girl in the video and this is my channel name

      Tara, you may want to consider a TiLite TX in the future. It is the folding equivalent of the ZR and it would be easier to fit in the car. I've had one for years and had no issues with it.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  8 років тому

      Ohhhh, I'll ler her know. I a, getting my first Tilite in 3 weeks, can't remember what model though.

      Andrew Huzar Thank you for the suggestion but I stay away from folding chairs. The more moving parts usually results in more things breaking. The way folding chairs fold wouldn't allow it to fit in my backseat either.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  7 років тому +1

      This is Kristen but I know Tara's chair is very light. I want to say under 20lbs. ill ask her to come on here and tell you when I can. I know it's a lot lighter than my aluminum TiLite chair. I am pretty sure she told me hers is Titanium.

    • @LivingAble

      think because it's coming up in people's searches that on March 3rd shooting for wheelchair disability videos but instead searching for videos about Mazda RX. Or it could simply be jealousy. It's pretty common for the most popular video of the channel to have both the most likes and most dislikes. Thankfully with the UA-cam algorithm both likes and dislikes benefit the channel in the same way

    my advise.... don't open the next door till you fully transfer to car seat "enough space to get wheelchair so close to your car seat ;0=)
    (nice looking ;0=+

      I open the other door before transferring so I don't chance scraping the outside of the other door. It's nice having more room to be able to turn my chair around, etc without the worry of hitting the other door
