- Tamara Mena, a communications major, shows how she modified her car for wheelchair access. This design was given to her by her close friend and mentor, Earl. The design uses minimal modification of an auto with rear hinged doors. see sci-peers.org/peers
That is very cool. I am disabled, and like your setup. Thumbs up to you and your friend for helping you. That was very nice of him.
Tamara, thank you very much for adding to the knowledge for spinal cord victims. You are awesome! I'm a quad and I appreciate seeing different ways to adapt. God bless, David
Hi Tamara, I'm from the Bay Area and I saw your story over the internet, you are a true beauty, keep it up
Video does an excellent job of showing how adaptations need to be specific to the person who uses them! I think sometimes able bodied people think that all disabled people with similar disabilities need same accommodations.
Tamara has anyone told you that you are awesome✨ Thank you for sharing it's extremely helpful and I also saw something on UA-cam called the xl motorized transfer board which would help you immensely, along with the speedy lift for your chair. Thank you thank you thank you 💕
I am physically challenged person.. I have Celerio VXI AMT - attached ARAI approved hand control kit for Break and Accelerator.(Thanks to M.S.Khan, Deccan Motors, TS) I had driving in Yercaud, Ooty, Valparai(25%), Topslip and Maruthamalai... Very good experience in hill driving with Celerio attached your hand control Kit Sir... Thanks a lot...................for all helping..inspiring people like u
God bless you. Great attitude and example to others. Excellent video.
LOVE YOUR video thank you for putting yourself out for all to judge. Those that are not in a wheelchair and have negative things to say, hush and go away.
Nice job Tamara.Good luck in your career.Hopefully more automakers will see the need for more accessible vehicles.
hi tam,,,,,,being a wheelchair guy ,, i am very very impressed with your ability to do what you do,, great job,, i wish you the best ,, larry
I just bought the same car. Thank u so much. I love the back doors also. Yaaasssss thank u.
I was going around youtube and came across your video. I actually drive a saturn s2 3 door coupe. Being able to transfer into the driver seat and pulling the chair is life changing. Its a shame saturn is out of business because they make driving for the disabled so much easier. My bf came up w this idea when we were talking about me regaining indepenece. I can now drive. that 3rd door allows me to do that. :)
Hi I am also a paraplegic a T5 - T6 spinal cord injury and I also drive and how I get in and out of the car I use a transfer board and that allows me to slide from the wheelchair to the driver's seat, that's a wonderful video and you are a inspiration to us all, u go girl❗!❗!❗👍🏾🤩🥳🕺💃😘
Great technique. Good to see other methods.
Such a beautiful and inspiring girl😍wish u the best!xoxo
OMG look at that smile. She's adorable.
Parabéns!
Excelente força de vontade!
I love this set up.
I'm a T-12 L1-L2, the Mazda 5 has a nice suicide door as well. You can take out the back seat behind the driver and add the same strap to the suicide door to shut it and you're good to go with a set of hand controls. Simple super easy mod for anyone out there looking.
Smart set-up!
tamara , i loved & inspired the way you pulled up your chair in to the car . that's really nice set up you have there . i use little small car then this but can't pull my chair on my own . so i'll have to have somebody to load my wheelchair in the boots or i'll have to leave it there only .
I'm T4, had a time getting mine in my 92 Dakota, broke it down completely, brought it across my chest and set it in the passenger seat, I have a van now, so the chair just gets strapped to my seat base before hopping into the drivers seat, spinning it around and sliding forward. Before anyone jumps in to say vans are easy, mine is a 73 Econoline without power steering and with manual drum brakes, it takes muscle to operate it all, no power anything.
oh yea... Way to goooo, Tamara... You look awesome sitting in your fancy car... :)
Hello Tamara, Great video! Love the car and your smile and spirit.iam difable too but i dont have car and wheelchair like that, but that video make me spirirte
Wonderful to be spirirte.
It’s perfect. Wish they still made this car.
I am proud of you!
Hi Tamare, I am a C8 T1, injured 1981. I drive a ford ranger. upon exiting I put my feet and legs out first in front of my chair then transfer out and down into my chair. you may want to try this, i found it much easier than doing it the way you are transferring. Great video should help a lot of people.
@dsulliva100 1. 2007 (last year model Saturn Ion Quad Coupes were made).
2. I love it! Saturns are really good cars, and it's been a great car to have. More importantly, I love the setup! The setup is worth everything.
3. No, I do not have power seats- that is something I would want. However, we reversed the driver seat's springs to help me go forward.
Thanks,
Tamara
Very impressive!!!
hi tmr i just saw your viedo were did you get to put the door llike to open the other way thank you
Hi I have Toyota Corolla 2008 I want ti know how addictive the hands control
Cool mobility concepts. Did you speak with any Braunability, Eldorado, VMI?s Did you need an RX for the pads and such?
I am from nepal . Where are you from ? Same conditions here please how much prise this car tell me
Hey Tamara,
Thanks for posting this video, it was a huge help when I was looking for a vehicle for myself! I was watching how you put in the wheelchair and was wondering do you have any advice on how to get the chair into the back? I have a 2007 Saturn Ion and my Grandpa modified the back pretty much the same way you have it only we took the seats completely out and the plaforms maybe 6 inches lower. I have Spina Bifida so if you have advice on how to put the chair in that would be awesome!
Thoughtful video, good ideas that can be implemented inexpensively. Thanks! I load my chair very similarly in Honda Element. Where does your dog sit? My service dog wants to sit in the passenger seat, so I made an adaptation for him to place front paws on support or lie down, and he has a specially fitted restraint (seatbelt).
Brilliant!
Hi Tamara, Great video, thanks for sharing.
I was just wondering what is the width of you chair?
Peace, Marn
Did Earl ever do a video of his truck?
a grab bar at the top of the door frame ?
can u drive manual shift car.?
wow! impressive ❤
Tamara how do you transfer in a dress or skirt ?
what wheelchair model are you using?
Grear video!, how are doing these days?
Excellent
Hi! The Toyota FJ Cruiser has suicide doors too, and it's still on the market unlike some of those listed on the video (apparently they will discontinue the Element and the RX-8 in 2012)
i love this! how heavy is your wheelchair? im a wheelchair user and i drive a ford ranger with a lift in a backseat because it has suicide doors. im in the market for a car so i can get better mpg and now i want to look at saturns! thanks!
I need a car so I have no money but a question where controls could buy to save some and buy power Diar
Great! Be blessed and l wish youepower on your way and for every day in life your friend and your family on your side! Yours, Connyt (l'm a woman who is handicaped at the back, the arms and hands and both knees and my flesh which has a lot of pain when moving. But l love to live and your video shows me never to give up!
Hi, my friend has the same situation as you and I would like to know the brand of your chair and how much does it cost. And if possible, could you tell me where I can order it from. I want to buy it as a gift for her since she is struggling with her current wheelchair.
Thank you
Hello Tamara,Im also confined to a wheelchair.Just a note. Try putting your right hand on the roof of the car and your left hand on the middle seat and pull at the same time you get a better leverage this is how i do it.it might help you but try it please. i also saw someone else do it in the same form it here on UA-cam.
were this made please send address and price please i need tooo
hmm!!! Interesting!!! I like to see how other para's/quads get in and out of their cars or whatever they drive. The way you transfer back into your car looks extremely taxing and difficult. How is it for you if you leave your legs out of the car and transfer? Any easier? Any harder?
Awesome 😎
very impressive
@GoldenLioness100 In the 1950's rear-hinged front doors were fashionable because it was very convenient to get in and out through them.
However, when these doors opened accidentially while driving, they were pulled open violently, sometimes dragging the driver out of the car (there were no seatbelts these days). Hence they were coined suicide doors.

Perfect this entrance, double doors.
Amen guys x
tres belle vedeo
Hi I’m a 17 year old with a progressive cerebral palsy condition and was told that I won’t be able to operate a regular vehicle but I don’t know how to get a car like yours is there any information you can give me
MUTO BOM MESMO !
Very nice
Very good, way to go ! Where there is a will there is away !
Courage à elle bravo
thank you, very good............
Very nice option for a low budget! But, looking forward it still looks quite physically challenging and harmful for shoulders and arms. Why not to go for a Wagon and something like Abiloader?
Nice video
I'm not a therapist but I am a paraplegic as well and I'm about the same level as you, on the transfer out I get as far toward the edge of the seat as I can and put my left leg out so it hits/or will hit the footplate, then I put my right hand on the roof above my head and my left hand on my left wheel of my chair, then lift myself out, it lets me get high enough and far out enough to not touch the chair with my backside. It might work for you too, if you have any questions or need me to explain a little more I'm happy to help, just get in touch with me
Have you ever considered to use any automatic wheelchair loader such as Abiloader instead of damaging your shoulders? They can keep your wheelchair in the boot of a station wagon - what is safe and modern!
Oh, I have another vehicle suggestion for those who might be looking. 1986 to 1989 Nissan Stanza Wagon. had sliding rear doors on both sides and low entry hight. was available in All Wheel Drive too. I used to own one and they are great cars. were not very popular but could be had pretty cheap for those on a budget...
Bom vídeo
I wish that I had it that easy !
hello tamara! in my car i have a overhead grip so it will be more easier to transfer from my car to wheelchair
Thanks
I am from India I am also wheelchair you recommend me best wheelchair for me
M.S. CLUB

I clicked on this link to learn about different ways to transition, but I was just too distracted by your wonderful personality to listen properly. You must hear this a lot, (but my understanding is that women don't mind being complemented if it's done in a nice way), you really are incredibly beautiful. Not just 'hot' or 'pretty', but staggeringly beautiful. And with a personality to match. Your husband must wake up every morning and pinch himself to make sure he's not dreaming.
You can buy the new Sporty Toyota Access-Cap(Extra-Cab) Tacoma Prerunner pickup truck with the same half-seat in the back & suicide-doors. They start new at around $23k-24k & come with 4.0Litre 235HP 6-cyl that is powerful & long-lasting. The 4x4 models adds another $3000. A lowmile used 2010 sells for $16k.
helo tam, nice car...me i've a Toyota Camry Sedan,it's nice & good too ! but i dont have take the wheelchair back like wat u do ..i've a kuschall wheechair, easy to remove parts . the 2 wheels, then can bring it to my next seat sitting..

The haters and the sick are the ones who disliked the video.
The BMW I3 is the only car I can think of that still has this door configuration.
creativity
Good
It would be good if we dont have to do the license on quadcoope
Look on the website of Paravan.de they have plenty of systems to modify cars.
