  • I fell into the floor transferring on my bed! Something I haven't done in years, I hadn't gotten off the floor into my chair in two years so this is how I tackled this interesting challenge.

    I have pretty similar mobility challenges. I keep several crutches with cuffs around. They can be used like a portable grab bar. Great for providing thrust from a counter position.

      It was an awesome video, Kristen! I've fallen out of bed once or twice in the last three years or so, but I was still living at home at the time, and my dad and brother helped me back in bed. My dad has passed away and I live on my own again. I tried stacking pillows up and trying to climb on top of them, but that didn't work! I don't think I'd be able to do it like you, so if it happens again, (which I pray it doesn't!) I guess I'll have to call 911...or my brother-in-law. He and my sister are only about 15 minutes away. Great job, Kristen!

      Donna Burck Sorry to hear about your Dad. Glad to hear you are living on your own YAY! . I am in better shape than my family lol. One thing you might consider is getting something like an ottoman or two (at different heights) that you could makee into like big stairs....does that make sense? Like for me a small stool wont work b/c I need my whole body on the same surface or it pulls me down...but if I have an ottoman type thing a few inches off the ground...then something a few nches taller than that I can get my whole body on, after the two ottomans I might be high enough to get into my bed or on my chair. Pillows are more flimsy than ottomans (Can you tell I am thinking of altenative solutions since this happened to me? lol)

      Welcome Al! So glad to have you! There didn't seem to be a whole lot on UA-cam doing what I felt like the wheelchair community needs, so we created our own! We have been doing this almost 3 years and I am glad to say I see more people helping others in the last year or so. I love giving a platform for others to show off heir skills where they do not have to put all the effort into editing and all that hard work that comes with having a full channel. I hope you enjoy yourself here! Let us know if there is anything we can make cover for you!

    Due to the aging process, I can no longer pull myself from the floor into the chair. I have to rely on cute paramedics, oh darn. In the past, I'd sit on my knees positioned between my chair and a dining room chair. With my hands on one wheel and the seat of the dining room chair, I'd do a pushup while twisting at the waist to get my bum partially onto my cushion. Then I'd sort of sit on the wheel until I could right myself. I hope that helps you.

    Oh honey, you scared me when you started transferring from the bed frame to the chair; I know about bad brakes. Got em. Glad your ok. Falling sucks. It took me and my mom TOGETHER 45 minutes,3 couch cushions,a shower towel and my chair, to get my butt off the floor back in December.

    I have been falling alot lately. last week i had to go to the emergency room to get my foot glued. ( apparently glue works better then stitches especially when you rip open near the toes). I was sitting on the couch watching tv and i had gotten up to get a drink and something for my headache , this was around 3 am and it was dark in my place as my son was a sleep in his room. Anyway on my way back to the livingroom when i went to get out of my chair and sit on the couch i fell and thought well the dog has the right idea sleeping on the floor is probably alot cooler then on the couch and so i turned to make myself comfortable on the floor instead of struggling to get onto the couch and suddenly saw a pool of blood under my foot so i shouted for my son to wake up and well spent about 3 hours in emergency. I usually fall when getting off the couch and in my bathroom. I may do a video on tricks i have learned to getting back into my wheelchair from floor! :-)

I was thinking the same thing....somehow get to that stable part of the bed. @LivingAble  8 років тому

      Tamera Weeks Yes I fell doing the exact same thing as I did in this video lol. I got rid of my couch because I always stay in my chair and rarely have guest. Couch takes up too much room in my 500 sq ft apt

    Wow, you are very strong. At this point in life I would probably just have to call someone to help me get up. I need to try to get my upper body stronger, but I have a pressure sore and I don't want to make that worse. I notice you have a big hole in your Wc seat. I might like something like that, too. Is that to take pressure off of your rear end? It's funny, for a long while as a kid and teenager, I had taken my brakes off my chair for basketball purposes ( to avoid broken or jammed fingers), but now as a 40 year old one of my low key missions in life lol is to keep my brakes working and tight, otherwise I just fall all the time.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  7 років тому

      I have a Jay 3 cushion and ir's just how it's made. Unfortunately this one is continually busting. That never was an issue with my previous Jay 3 cushions so idk why this one's having so many issues. I definitely recommend doing what you can for your upper body strength. I am no where near as strong as I used to be before I hurt my shoulder a year ago and I have gained a lot of weight, but I am working on it. There's a playlist of wheelchair exercises on my page as well if you ever want to look at it. Good brakes are a very good thing. Unfortunately the angle I was at when I tried to transfer it didnt matter if they worked or not lol. i'll be praying the pressure sore heals quickly.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  3 роки тому

      That definitely can happen. I'm pretty sure that's happened to me one of the first times I found the floor and so then I realized I had to figure out how to not get the carpet burns. And so I do what I do now here

  • @NaihanchinKempo
    @NaihanchinKempo 8 років тому +1

    Buy a small stool. One low enough you can sit on it, but high enough, you can get on the bed, Make sure you move the chair against the wall near where you can ether get to it or get in it or move it easy. buy tools to fix your brakes. metric allen wrenches etc, maintain the chair best you can..best investment i made was two sets of good allen wrenches

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  8 років тому

      I have all those tools you've mentioned. The actual chair frame is bent so that's why the brakes aren't working. I've had them adjusted and replaced twice so they've said there's nothing they can do and the brakes are already as far toward the wheel as they will go. The stool thing won't work (for me but great idea for others that read the comments) b/c my weight of my lower body pulls on me too much to push myself up to the bed . Pulling works way better for me than pushing but this is a great idea for someone. I can't put my chair on the side with the wall because that is my weak side so I can't transfer that way at all (unless I have something to pull on like in my shower transfer videos). It's interesting how with every transfer I do except for shower transfer I use a "pushing" up motion instead of a pulling but with my shower chair and getting over the wheel and across the shower chair I have to use a pulling moment *shrugs* lol.

    I would've tried getting up off of the floor the same way. Only thing I would've done different is once I was on my knees, I would have rolled the chair right behind me, and then tried sitting back.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  8 років тому

      Great idea! I know someone will benefit from this comment. You mean going into the chair backwards instead of forward? I needed to get a better angle shot to show how far away the chair is because of the footrests. It' a good 8-12 inches away and up. My arms are so short compared to the length of my torso so I can't get myself up any higher and once all my weight isn't right over my hands I topple over lol.

    What kind of cushion do you have in your wheelchair. I saw it had a whole in it. I have a reacher or a pick up stick as I call it. Yours is a lot longer than mine. Way to go getting back in your chair.

    Better buy some small foot bench or poof because it's a bit lower to get on to en from that foot bench or poof you transfer to a chair and from the chair you transfer to your bed or wheelchair
    I think that will be much faster and less painful.

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  6 років тому +1

      Mark Van Oyen the way I transfer a bench would not work. I did get a different mattress that weighs less so I can do the whole process a lot quicker but I still prefer this method because I have a large solid surface to pull myself up onto instead of having to be on a small surface like a bench that I can't balance on

    You are young & can use your arms. I must encourage you to learn carpentry so that you can put ropes in the ceiling so you can get up by using the strength of the strong arms God is loaning you.
    Your home is neat.
    I don't help my friend that is in a wheelchair because she doesn't want ropes hanging from her ceiling. She wants her home to be pretty instead of functional. She called me at night one time that she had fallen.
    My wife also complains that I put my ladder and tools in "her" livingroom, but she doesn't understand that I work alone & I have a ton of things to do & my wife believes that children should not do any chores. I believe our children should help me put stuff away, but then the next morning nobody helps me gather the tools & equipment again.
    I came home 2 hours early from work yesterday because I didn't have a screwdriver with me to put the chain back on the chainsaw. I cut trees for a living here in Deltona Florida. I must go buy more screwdrivers. I have some tools in one customer's garage & others here at my home.
    In the future I will turn my home into a monkey gym. I have full abilities with my body; nothing is wrong with it. I do need to get stronger. One muscular dad doing pull ups at the park was telling kids that everyone should be able to lift their own body weight & I started thinking that I should be able to do more than 1 pull up so I'm getting in shape now.
    I'm looking into Crossfit. I'll get there one of these Sundays. Please look into it, too.
    God bless you and those that surround you.
    P.S. I saw on youtube an electric 1/2 bicycle that attaches to a regular wheelchair & pulls it forward.
    Thank you for your video.

      Thanks for your comments. I am working on building my arm strength back up. I hurt my shoulder a year ago and was in physical theraphy over four 4 months. I am working on things at my pace. I definitely prefer functional over pretty and my place is functional I do believe. No need for ropes. This is a rare thing that can happen to anyone. Have a great day :)

      Richard Jackson Any idea why you fall so much? Is it mainly when transferring?

    When your on your bed why don't you just go onto your chair backwards?

    • @LivingAble
      @LivingAble  8 років тому

      I explain I just cant do that. Guess my bjtt weighs too much to throw it backwards and not end in between them. Theres like a foot gap you have to get over because of the footrests. My arms also arent much longrr than my torso so going up higher is hard. This is just how I learned lol.

      al zolez It's all good. Just don't know many people that would tell a woman to lose weight publicly where others can see it lol. And as far as the transfer goes, sometimes it just aint happening for someone.....
