- Paul over at the Diecast Graveyard UA-cam channel has invited the community to join in the Super Huge Ginormous Build Off with the first event in the competition being a build for your favorite band with a drop date of December 15, 2023. I chose to do a tribute build reflecting the first van used by Aerosmith to get from gig to gig. The actual van was located a few years ago by the guys over at American Pickers and was shown on the show…along with the verification that it was truly the first van, and after some reinforcement of the structure of the vehicle, it appeared at their residency in Las Vegas. For the build, I chose the Lesney / Matchbox No. 47 Commer Ice Cream Canteen. #diecastgraveyard #buildoff #matchbox
I hope you enjoy this build!
Please check out all of the builds in the invitational, check out the recap video on the Diecast Graveyard UA-cam channel…and vote for the build you like the most. I’m certain there are going to be some absolutely beautiful builds for the event (and, well, this one that’s not so beautiful lol).

Pretty spot on. The photos of the band reuniting with the van show it as dark like you have it. Probably from a clearcoat applied to arrest any further decay. Its part of their history and now part of the story we fans get to enjoy.
Anybody can replicate a tour bus. Often anymore the look like common motorhomes. But to replicate that bit of history?
Like all the cool kids say...
"Nailed it!"
Thanks Don! I think you're right about the clearcoat darkening the color - I'm certain they took a lot of steps to stabilize what they had and to prevent any further loss. They were lucky that the image on the side was in such good shape - it easily could have been barely a trace of what it originally was.
The van build was excellent. Any build where you can laugh as you are doing it is a great build. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Dan! Heck, part of the fun of doing these little cars is that it's easy for them to keep me laughing lol Thanks for watching!
Like it, Jim..... 🤘🤘
Thanks Uri!
Great build, Jim. It gives me sweet emotions of days gone by.
Thanks Skip! Days gone by? Heck no...it's crazy how many times I have Aerosmith playing in the background as I'm working on stuff lol
I too remember that episode of American Pickers, loved it, but Jim I agree it's your diecast do what ever you please with it, you have my blessings my friend, you did a great job on the van and ( you did it your way)😆😉, enjoyed this restoration Jim, take care bud 👋😎🚙🚗🛻
Thanks so much Jeff!
I remember that van it was American pickers!!
Jim, your work is great. I like The p.o.s approch. The color works!
Thanks so much Merlin!
You are right, windows look perfect. Love the band and the truck. Excellent! Cool!
Thanks Brian!
That's kool, brother.
Thanks Gary!
Awesome build Jim 🌴👍👍😎🌴
Thanks David!
That is so cool looking!
Thanks Russ!
Great job Jim. One of my two fave bands
Thanks Pete!
Nice build, details and paint job 👌 👍
Thanks Joe!
I remember that American Pickers episode too, and I definitely have Aerosmith flashbacks. Don't worry that you did it up 'not so pretty.' It's an accurate representation of the original and, Steven Tyler fits right in with the ugly theme! 😂 Dream On, Jim! 🍁☕🎸🎵
Thanks Andrew! I've wanted to do this build for a while now...and Paul's announcement was the added push I needed to do it. Poor Steven Tyler...but I guess to put a positive on it, he hasn't gotten a lot worse looking as he's aged 🤣🤣🤣 Have a great weekend Andrew!
I love it!
Thanks Chris!
Cool! I remember seeing photos of that van a few years ago. Good luck in the build off!
Thanks Ron! Considering I'm rolling in to the first event with the ugliest ride in the show, I'll need all the luck I can get lol
Hey Jim , great build and awesome deep story behind this project.
Great band WOW !!
I gave you my vote , number 34 .
Mike Espo .
Merry Christmas.
🎄🎁
Thanks so much Mike for watching and voting for number 34! Merry Christmas!
Jim, What a great job on this build. I did see the American Picker show on this van It was cool that they did that for the band I do believe it is going to end up at the Rock& Roll Hall of Fame sometime
Thanks so much! I really do hope it ends up in the R&R HoF because that van really is the roots of one of America's greatest rock and roll bands.
Love the build!! 😎
Thanks Brian!
I like the look of that. I can’t do this challenge right now, But I hope to be in the next one.
Thanks Ian!
I remember the episode. Cool find! Great idea for a build. The image reminds me of the keep on truckin dude back in the day.
Thanks! Oh yeah, you can tell they took the idea from the Keep on Truckin' dude by R. Crumb...who has done some pretty wild stuff over the years :)
Great job Jim 👍🏻
Thanks Mark!
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms you're welcome 😊
Jim this thing turned out amazing. I love the American pickers show.
Thanks so much Brandon!
Nice job Jim that came out cool lookin.👍👍🍻
Thanks so much Lennon!
Oh no thank you.😅🍻@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms
Jim, you had fun AND delivered (heh heh) a really strong build. Very strong concept. Way to find something really specific. Love it!
Thanks so much Tom! I've wanted to do this build for a while now...and just never got to it. When Paul announce the band build, it was the incentive I needed to finally get around to it...and I'm really glad I did :)
they say you are your own worst critic, this build looks GREAT Jimmy, again.... disappointed no "Worms" LOL
Thanks Ray! I'm saving the worms for the Channel Finale lol
Great build! We talked about doing this build at work. I’m glad to see someone else has the same ideas!
Thanks! I’ve wanted to do this build ever since seeing the episode, but just never got around to it until now.
Wow. That looks so cool. And realistic
I'm pretty darn happy with the end look of this tribute build Morten - thanks so much!
Great transformation Love the custom!
Thanks so much GW!
Awesome job Jim!! I love it and remember that pickers episode
Thanks! It was a great episode!
🔥👀Dream On Jim! Great tribute! 👊❤
Thanks so much Ricobobe!
Always wanted to try that crystal clear. Now i really want to try it. Excellant final results! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mike! The Krystal Klear can really work well. With a little practice, you can pull it across some fairly long openings.
I lived near Steve Tyler years ago when he lived in western he had a nice big white house with big gates in the front thanks for the ride jim !! Nice build
How about a trade your build for my love to put that in my collection Jim!! Since Tyler is from Massachusetts!! Lol let me know iam posting my video later tonight!! 😊
Sounds great Eddie BUT we've gotta wait a while before it's sent. I'm planning on doing a video of all five DG Super Build Off builds that I do and I want to take group photos of them all together (honestly, I doubt I'll be able to do all five builds, but at least three lol). In other words, it's going to be something like eight months or so until it will hit the mail lol. If that sounds ok to you, the trade is on.
Sounds great given my to spok Syndicate tom after the events but going to make 3 more and a special one for u !! With the queen decals!!
Clearly the goat got his buzz on at the concert! It's not that rare of a casting, so I doubt there will be too many complaints. Have fun with your toys! Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year to you and yours!
Thanks David! That darn goat has such a good life lol Merry Christmas to you and your family and have a wonderful New Year!
Very Kool Jim👍👍👍
Thanks Mike!
wicked tribute build love it
Thanks Neil!
A very cool replica, love how the rust turned out.
Thanks John! Ahhhh the rust...sometimes I look at it and I'm happy....sometimes I look at it and I wish I had added a little more lol
That's a winner🏆
Thank you!
I love it! What a great idea!
Thanks Mark! Hope you’re having a great Christmas!
I really liked this build when I saw it in the recap video for the Ginormous Build Off. I would have voted for it if I hadn't submitted my own entry. The cool thing is that you chose a casting way different than the typical current hotwheels mainline that most others (including me!) used.
Thanks so much - I couldn't resist doing this build because it's been on my mind since seeing the episode. The casting is such a funky old thing, it made it seem even more appropriate lol
LOL...Great work my friend....Love it
Thanks Dan!
Turned out fantastic. I watched the episodes of American Pickers when they showed the van
Thanks Michael!
I am so disturbed that I am having to lie down in a darkened room, Jim. I may be gone for some time.
Loved it!
🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Fraser!
Wow great job!!
Thank you so much!
Dream On, Jim! lol This one belongs with the toys in the attic!
Thanks Loston! Toys in the Attic is such a great song...off the album with the same name, which happens to be one of the first albums I ever bought. Early high school years, walking past the JC Penney on the way home and went through the record section and picked it up.
It's also the first album that I ever bought with my own money! lol I bought it in the '80s. My brother had the album at one point in the late '70s, and I just missed hearing it. lol @@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms
Dang, that’s a sweet tribute to one of the best bands to come out of Boston!
Thanks Paul!
Remember when my mom and I got those dolls from goodwill and this lady drove by and said how lucky we were to find them and i was like "yeah! Were so excited to turn them into zombies!" And she drove away in shock and disgust lol? But hey they were our dolls. And those are your cars. Better to have fun with them than have them sit in a closet. Anyone who is mad just makes it more fun 🤣
I really love how this build came out and i love the band you chose and the history you told about it. I learned something new!
Good job dad 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Great job with the decals.
I hope you use the ice cream man again!
Another disturbing thought i had is that would have also made a good kavorkian van 😂😳
I do remember that so well! And it's a very similar thought - my stuff, my rules lol We sure did have fun making those dolls into wild Halloween decorations 🤣 About the Kavorkian comment, yep, that's my daughter! 🤣 Love you Madi!
Very cool Jim. Looks great. Put the Ice Cream man in a Silva Challenge 😂😂
Thanks Jody! Oh no, I'm not giving the ice cream man away...he will be appearing in one of my builds one day lol
Yeah i remember american pickers where rhey found it and it was thst show or another one they brought the band to see it and Steven Tyler tood stories about it. Great build Jin
Thanks so much Scott!
I like it
Thanks!
Fantastic and creative idea 💡 , congrats Jim and Merry Christmas, I enjoyed this one 💯🎄🎅
Thanks Jeff! Merry Christmas to you too!
Great job Jim. I'm not aware that there´s a 1:64 version of an IH Metro Van, but with this English Commer you get amazingly close to the original. This time you left out a lot of your usual steps in order to get as close to the template as possible (actually the very same steps that I leave out of my models anyway...lol.). Yes, American Pickers was also running here in Germany and believe it or not, but I´ve already seen a real copy of this Metro van at a US car meeting in Geiselwind. That was about 10 or 11 years ago and before the show was on our TV. With German registration, which is actually not possible given the condition of the car. The TÜV official must have received a lot of bribes.
Thanks so much Fritz! I was really happy when I stumbled across how close the Commer is to the Metro - naturally not perfect, but close enough for this little task lol. Bribing an official - oh no! 🤣🤣🤣
😮👍👍👍😎
Thanks Dane!
I love it! I have seen the episodes of American Pickers with this van, which is a International-Harvester Metro. I don't know of any 1\64 scale versions of a IH Metro, so I reckon this is the closest casting to that type of van. Excellent job, and I really like how the windows turned out.
Thanks Richard! I couldn't find any IH Metro castings either, so I went fumbling around the stuff I had and this seemed like a pretty good second choice...with the addition of a little JB Weld lol
That looks totally bitching man that looks exactly like the van from American Pickers I really enjoyed the episode I really enjoyed you doing this my wife has a nickname for you she calls you giggles cuz you're always laughing when you're doing your videos keep up the good work stay safe and healthy out there and have a good one and God bless my friend
Thanks so much JC! LOL about that nickname, that's one of the things about doing the voiceovers - I don't laugh as much when I'm working on stuff, but when recording the voiceovers, it's tough for me not to laugh watching an old man doing such silly things to tiny little toy cars lol It's a silly amount of fun! Hope you and your wife have a wonderful weekend and stay safe out there!
It does hurt a little bit when I see the old Lesney's being drilled apart, they are my favorites. However it is so cool to see them restored and full of life again and they also turn out looking like you're van. I did see that episode of American pickers and I thought the van was cool as hell, brother you did an excellent job and and get a round of applause from me. Even though it does hurt a little bit seeing them drill apart I love seeing people whine about the Lesneys and the red lines being drilled apart 👍
Thanks David! I really appreciate that you like what I did with that Lesney casting.
Ah yes! The pop it, repurposed for a paint pallet!
Wow that’s so cool.would be nice to have the decals. But not a lot of people have them or the tools.
Thanks Diego! I wish the decals had just been available somewhere to buy for a few bucks, but I didn't see any out there, and I always like the challenge of the custom decals. I'm not someone that prints a lot of decals, so it takes me quite some time to find the images, clean them up, make the two layer (color layer and white layer) files into scalable SVG files, and then finally scale them to size - test print - rescale lol and test print - third time is a charm rescale lol...and then finally print them on two passes - one color with regular cartridges and then white toner cartridge print. It may be silly to put probably five hours into the decals for this build...and probably most people wouldn't want to do it...but in the end, I always learn from the process and feel it's worth it. I'm sure there are people out there that can do it in MUCH less time...I'm just not one of them LOL
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms oh wow I didn’t know that it takes a lot of time. Oh well maybe I’ll get lucky when I am not looking. You are welcome.
looks great, and pretty accurate. :) also, interesting methods with the window. I wasn't aware krystal kleer would stretch over that distance. :) had a box of apple pie a few weeks ago, box had a very thin sheet of clear plastic foil for a window. now I kinda wished I hadn't tossed it... then again, comes time, comes pie.
or something.
I was like, hoping you'd keep the interior (how did the thing lose all the glass insert, anyway?) because Ice Cream Guy tends to lose head and hands... but yeh, he can be put away separately, so there. he needs a raise, anyway. ;)
Thanks Lothar! Sounds like you've come up with a good reason to have more apple pie lol. The Krystal Klear can be pulled over a fairly long distance...assuming the shape of the pull is a narrow rectangle - if it's a taller box shape, it would be difficult. I did a similarly large cover of with Krystal Klear on a drag bus build a while back that was a resin print and it worked pretty well. It just takes a lot of patience (coupled with a lot of screaming lol)
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms ah yes. funny how some things work better if you cuss 'em out. :)
Awesome build Jim! Did you see the original van find on American Pickers episode?
Thanks Ben! I did - I saw the original van find episode and then the later episode where they presented the van to the group.
OMG! Jim great show Pickers (shame about Frank Fritz) but still great show I saw the episode long ago…awesome built Merry Christmas Jim…Robert
Thanks Robert! Merry Christmas to you too!
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms Lee has put many of matchbox and hot wheels I donated to him to do with what he wanted on video and restored them.i even won his raffle has I did yours…I don’t enter anymore raffles lol I have over 500 matchbox etc cars I love to do something with I’m not a collector anymore must were from myself tons are brand new in boxes still….they are in cases in closet just sitting shame….
@@ScannermanFDNY I suppose you could do giveaways Robert if you wanted to get them into the hands of those who do collect them. Selling them somewhere online can often be more work than it's worth (I've always found eBay to be a lot of work for little return) but I've found that I really do enjoy the giveaways I've done.
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms willing to give shipping will kill me.. there’s no more consignment shops around or anything like that since covic
@@ScannermanFDNY I hear you on those shipping costs. I've spent quite a bit on shipping for all of the giveaways I've done, but one at a time it's been fun.
OMG, how could you do that to that casting? 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dejligt at se din video, du gør altid et godt indtryk på folk. Hvordan har du det i dag, håber du vil have mange fordele
Thank you so much for watching! I'm doing well and hope you are well too!
This build could 2nd as a JBWeld custom.
🤣🤣🤣 almost more JB Weld than casting 🤣🤣🤣
