- What Did I Get Myself Into? The Matchbox Soap Car - Mike Espo (there’s a link to his UA-cam channel below) was kind enough to send me one of cars in a bar of soap that Matchbox sold years ago. I was thinking I would turn it into something nice…but then I came to the realization that I’m not a miracle worker lol #Matchbox #SoapCar #customdiecast #gaslands

I'm subscribed to Mike. That reminds me of the 60's car they preserved underground and dug up all rusted looking.
LOL When this thing came out of the soap, at first I wasn't sure if there was more of it attached to the soap than to the "car" lol
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms 🤣 Yeah. Thought the soap took off the paint from the car.
It is kinda embarrassing that the Matchbox name was attached to this cheap casting. I feel like they would have been better off just doing an all plastic car in the shape of a real Matchbox model rather than trying to make it seem like a legit Matchbox car when it clearly is not up to the same standards. But I do like how you customized it, has a very Mad Max vibe to it.👍
Thanks so much! It really is surprising seeing the Matchbox name tied to such a terrible casting...even more sad to realize that even the soap is pretty funky...then again, it is over 25 years old 🤣🤣🤣
Looks better custom now, without the soap. 🤣 Reminds me of a VW Karmann Ghia sorta.
Definitely gives off the Karmann Ghia vibes! Still turned out pretty cool looking. Nice job Jim 😃👍👍🤙
@@jandjhotwheels Glad you see it looks like one too.
Thanks!
It does have a Karmann Ghia look to it.
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms Unfortunate it was a car that didn't look like a Matchbox at all.
The "silk purse/sow's ear" analogy springs to mind Jim: I love it!
Thanks! It's still pretty much a sow's ear...maybe with a nice earring 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome save of the soap bar car😂😂😎
Thanks Armando!
LOL....Great save and imagination Jim!!
Thanks Pete!
This video just showed up on my feed, and im glad I watched it, it has such a nice innocent feel to it, sort of like working to fix something with your grandpa. Thank you for your content ☺️
Thank you SO much! I truly appreciate what you said - it’s exactly how I want the videos to feel. Thank you for watching!
A very cool make over for a very undeserving casting, excellent work on this the weathering and idea behind the build are great.
Thanks so much John!
“I didn’t know that Jim liked JB Weld”, said no Jim Silva subscriber ever 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Like my pappy always says "sure, you can polish a turd ... but it only becomes a shiny turd" 😂
Cars like your "lifebuoy" special are a real test for a guy's mental condition.....and this test tells me that you are crazy as a loon ! 😂😂
Very well done buddy, great save !
Were there any doubts about how crazy I am? 🤣🤣🤣
That think is awesome with the make over. Never knew the out mbx in soap lol. Looks like a vw karman ghia thanks for sharing amazing work
I agree with you about the vw ghia
Thanks so much! Sometimes you just have to take what a casting gives you (in this case, not much lol) and somehow make it work. A post apocalyptic look is all I could see would work with it.
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms definitely a great custom with that you. Had to work with
Hi Jim , Eddie at simple customs got his soap car today .
I explained to Eddie that he must use Your Title word for word , then we can see how many views Eddie gets .
Your at 16 Thousand ,,,, AWESOME , Mike Espo.
Thanks again Mike 👍
😂😂😂😂👍👍😂😂😂😂😂.
I think you did an awesome job with this soapy car .
Full watch and share.
I am glad you got to experience and enjoy a Matchbox soap car .
I have one more soap car .
I will be doing a raffle for it soon .
Thanks so much Mike for the chance to take that weird car and make...a weird car out of it 🤣🤣🤣 Just checked and oddly enough, the video is doing wildly well. Who would'a thunk it?
I see that 1100 views, that’s only because you mentioned my name a few times . We all know that.
It is a fun soapy car .
😂😂😂😂
Mike
@@diecast_MikeEspo That must be it Mike lol The displayed view count is (as usual) behind the "real" count which at the moment is 1,472 views - not too shabby for a video that's been up 25 hours. Hmmmm maybe it's because people see the word soap and think its a dirty video lololol
Maybe 🤔 😂😂😂😂💀
Another clean build😂 looks a VW Karman Ghia keep up the good work stay safe and God Bless my friend
Thanks so much JC!
I have one that I've never opened. I think I'll leave it in the package. 👊❤
LOL Probably a good idea, because whatever is inside of that soap isn't going to be pretty LOLOLOL
How to make lemonade out of lemons! I think it turned out great.
Thanks Mike!

Seen those soap cars on Mike's channel 😊

Nice "clean" build Jim! Lol!
Thanks Ron! That soap is anything but clean...and I had to use real soap to clean that nasty soap off my hands 🤣🤣🤣
That is so cool! Fun video!
Thanks Mark!
15 Thousand !!!!!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
AWESOME.
Mike .
It’s wild Mike! I just looked and it crossed 16,000 this morning 😳
It definitely has to do with the fact that my name is involved !!!
👍👍👍😂😂
When you hit 20 Thousand views !!!
I want the car !
I need the car !
That car is mine !

If you remember that movie ?
I must HAVE THAT CAR !!!
@@diecast_MikeEspo 🤣🤣🤣
Never heard of these before. Certainly an interesting concept!
Interesting…and probably not designed to last 25+ years 🤣🤣🤣
Great job Jim and looks awesome
Thanks 👍
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms you're welcome 😊
Nice job Jim. That car is the bomb! 😂😂😂 Fun stuff
🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Jody! It really is! 🤣🤣🤣
Looks much better now. Very cool build brother.
Thanks Brandon! It just had to be gaslanded lol
I've been doing that weathering to my RC and you did a very nice patina on the body I thought.
Thank you so much!
Could have been a golden opportunity for a Warden prison bar soap joke, with a slippery Oil Spill drop weapon in the back.
🤣🤣🤣 it would have been! 🤣🤣🤣
gotta say you gotta have imagination and be very creative to come up with a solution to this car. considering where is started it looks cool
Thanks Neil!
Unreal lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pretty cool...nkt all gems are shiny..the story is cool..rat rod it out..the tires and lift is a cool idea and exploding rc is cool ❤❤
Thanks! It was fun figuring out what to do with the condition of the car.
Try the soap jim u like it !!! The lovely ladies will be all over u !!! Lol 😆 thanks for the ride!! Oh by the way when u can I would like a set of those Aerosmith decals for a custom I did for Santa slow dog!!! If u don't mind!!! Thanks much love!! Thanks for the ride!!
LOL That soap is more likely to drive "the lovely ladies" away than attract them LOL About the decals Eddie - I'm not like the big guys that print boatloads of decals with great equipment, with the ones I make being one-shot runs. BUT, you're in luck...I checked my stack 'o decals before answering you and when I made them for the van, I printed a couple extras in case things went to crap lol, so I'll get them in the mail to you. Keep in mind, these are two part decals - you'll need to lay down the white toner decal first, then add the color decal over it. I'll try to pop them in the mail in the next few days.
Nice build, details and paint job 👌 👍
A "clean" looking car!! 😂
Thanks Joe! Funny how it took getting rid of all the nasty old soap to make it clean 🤣
It went from nightmare to cool as hell, at least you had all the soap you needed to clean it up🤣🤣🤣. Just a quick question for you brother, where do you get yourself tapping screws from? I'm sure you told us before in another video but sometimes I would forget my head if it wasn't attached lol.
Thanks David! I bought my self tapping screws from Amazon -- if I remember correctly, I have a link to them in my Amazon storefront (there's a link in the video description...sales through there make me a few cents a sale lol). They call them something different though, like thread cutting or something similar. If you don't see them there, just yell at me and I'll look up the link to them.
I have another soap car , I will be raffling it off soon .
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustomsthank you
WOW WOW NICEEEEEEE.
10000 VIEWS . Awesome.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It just keeps going Mike 😳
Amazing and crazy at the same time.
👍👍👍😂😂😂
Omg 😮
VW Carmen ghia, actually like those cars 😊
I love it , looks like something out of Mad Max
Thanks!
Yeah, I was thinking Classic (Mainly: "Road Warrior", after the Total Societal Collapse (so its Post "MM1" as that was Mid Societal Collapse, the Warlords had not yet got their hands on the Military Technology (which is needed for the RC Boom Bug) that they had by "Road Warrior" after Society Collapsed Entirely) but before the Nuclear Holocaust, as after that ("Furiosa", "Game", "Fury Road", "Thunderdome") the Boom Bug's went from RC to Kamikaze...so being RC places it roughly around "Road Warrior" I'd Say.) Mad Max as well! it's the Duck's Guts Mate!
@@simeonyves5940 Thanks so much!
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms No Problem! or, as they say out there in the Wastelands, No Worries!
😂 I think I would have thrown that in the friggin trash.😂 but nice job on it 🍻
🤣🤣🤣 I have to admit, if it hadn't been given to me by Mike, but instead something I bought...it would have been trashed 🤣🤣🤣
Wow, that casting is crap! lol. That thing was hopeless to begin with, but you managed to do something with it. It looks like a beaten up, Gaslands kind of candidate for sure, so I'm glad you went that route. It would have been even better with a number of micro-holes drilled into the side of it as if it had been riddled with bullet holes in the past. Heh.
LOL Yep...it's not exactly going to be the "jewel" of a collection LOL. Once I got the silly idea of making it nice out of my mind, it became a lot easier to deal with lol
😁👍
It took me far too long to realize what the thumbnail was... I legit thought it was a toilet full of liquid 💩 until I read the video title
🤣🤣🤣 wasn’t sure what to show on the thumb so I figured going with a picture of the package was best. That soap did have a nasty look to it 🤣🤣🤣
A toy car inside a bar of soap is just like an Obvious Plant joke product.
It really has that feel to it lol
Funny
Of course there was soap inside, probably started as liquid soap that they sunk a car into. Where would you be without jb weld😅, it came out great! Devious remote control boom on the road, too naughty. Glad it's not in Death Race 2024 😂
LOL I don't know, I kinda sorta expected the casting to be a little more weatherproof...but the large openings in the base let me down lol. Thanks so much GW!
Oh man! It’s a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia!
Splish Splash you're washing your HANDS.
At least you got soap to wash the crap off your fingers 😂
🤣🤣🤣 The soap was nasty Dan...I needed to use soap to wash the Matchbox soap off 🤣🤣🤣
Cant bekieve matchbox had the nerve to sell these😮
Also is this the giggliest video youve done? , i think it might be😂
Dunno if id have given up a set of rr for it, but it looks good👍
LOL yep, it is pretty surprising that Matchbox would put their name on these things. I'm certain it's the "giggliest" video...I couldn't help it, the whole concept is just so silly to me. Fortunately, I have a bunch of boxes of the Real Riders handy, so adding them to this casting increased it's value incredibly...to the value of the Real Riders lol
Could be a nice custom Karmann-Ghia xD
🤣🤣🤣 Well...I think it could be a Karmann Ghia...but I don't think it's ever going to be a nice, custom anything 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms I soon realized xD
Either way that thing is a bomb. A bath bomb, if you will
@@mavericknizmo9182 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
oh my, the soap definitely wasn't good for the paint... maybe it was good it never got unpacked, who knows what it would have done to an unsuspecting kid's skin. :P
reminds me too, of a Karman Ghia type 14. I have seen these castings here, they also come in larger packages for a small coin. they are close enough to an original to be maybe-recognized, but not close enough to licenses must be paid; probably a Zylmex/Yatming product.
turning it into a gaslands vehicle was a good move, but I felt a tiny bit sorry for it to be turned into a rolling bomb... for a second, I did. maybe longer.
maybe.
;)
It definitely is one of “those” types of cheap castings. I think I read that this was made by a company called Summer.
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms never heard of them, but there. :) I have a Mercedes gullwing casting by them that looks so off and miserable I need to do, one day, somethign nice with it.
like, a gaslands custom. ;)
is that an Asrton Martin?
It’s not marked, but many people believe it’s a Karmann Ghia
😂😂🔥🔥🔥👍😎
Thanks Dane!
I should add, these are the gateway drug to our addictions of collecting.....🤦♂️
🤣🤣🤣
4.2 Thousand Views ! WOW .
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wild isn't it? Now if I could only figure out what it is about the description and/or the thumbnail that are making people watch it lol
I am also trying to figure that out ?
Maybe the word soap 🧼?
😂😂😂.
Here is another example of craziness, I went to a holding lot / field looking for a junk forklift, so I made a quick short video of it , nothing special , and BAM 💥, in a few hours it has over 450 views .
Nothing even good or special to look at ?
I don’t get ?
Mike
@@diecast_MikeEspo I've been asked a lot of times about the success of the channel for the last eight or so months - after I devoted a LOT of time to researching how to get more views and grow - and one of the things is the importance of the first five seconds of a video. When scrolling through videos, you can see the first five seconds without actually "watching" the video, so they can really influence the success of a video. It's why I got rid of the opening turntable shot and went to a more active start. I'm guessing this video (and possibly the forklift video) have benefited from an interesting start. It sure isn't my thumbnail -- I actually thought it was kinda boring lololol
Your 5 seconds theory might be correct, that sounds good .
That soap car video was good , I did not think it was boring.
I will go back and look at my soap cars and see what there numbers were .
I did a video last year about how to take off decals , and that video went over 8000 views very fast 💨, so who knows ?????
Mike .
hopefully they werent using lead paint on these cheap castings since the soap seemed to dissolve the paint lol
🤣🤣🤣 From the looks of the casting, I'm pretty sure if there were any nasty chemicals available, they would have used them making this thing 🤣🤣🤣
Sudabaker.
🤣🤣🤣
Is this really not a bootleg? They straight up ripped off the Toy Story logo on the front...something very common with knockoffs.
Sad to say it's not a bootleg...at least according to the information I've found, the Matchbox name was actually licensed for use with this product.
U didn’t want to wash yr self with it 1st 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 that soap was nasty 🤣🤣🤣
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms yes
Yeah, that car was a turd, and you were able to "polish" it up enough to make it look like it actually belonged somewhere. And I'm sure you also got hours of enjoyment going to gym's and "dropping the soap" in the public showers. This whole thing was the gift that keeps on giving. :)
🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, I'm guessing the guys at MBX spent a lot of time in bathhouses when they got the idea for this monstrosity...and next thing you know, MBX is being sold to Mattel and the soap car production grinded (yeah, I know you like that word) to a halt 🤣🤣🤣
If I had purchased this as a kid, I'd be quite upset to find some 💩china casting.
I would have definetely written a nasty letter to Matchbox for this one.
What a joke concept and I bet that was like 5$+ back in the day.🤦😂
It really is surprising to find something in the soap that is SO not a Matchbox car. I'm surprised that Matchbox didn't just get rid of a lot of their excess castings that weren't selling well by throwing them in the soap.
I can see who the target audience is. 6 year olds. They wash for months to get a toy. Thats all this is. Its a toy.
We as hobbiests enjoy the Hot Rod aspect of Hot Wheels and the realism provided by aforementioned Matchbox. But Truth be gone ahead and told....Mattel is first and formost a Toy company. These little weird oddities are not found in my matchbox aisle ill bet they sit on the Kidergarten age toy aisle.
I am oddly interested however. I gotta know how many there are and what can I do to them to make them cool looking?
🤣🤣🤣 Like you said, there probably were not found with the other diecast, but in the checkout lanes of the store...a last second impulse buy...often with the kid crying about not getting anything yet 🤣🤣🤣
I don't have a clue how many there are...but you should take a look at Mike Espos channel - he's done some of them.
What were they smoking when they were coming up with this idea in the marketing department and thinking "hey this might be a cool idea" the worst matchbox product ever made
If I had to guess, I'm thinking the person that came up with the idea was terminated shortly after this came out lol
An educational tool to make bathing fun for kids who hate bathing. It's still a goofy as hell idea, but I get the principle of it, don't agree with the execution however...
@@ChiefWombatCuddler LOL yep, the execution was terrible lololol
Shameful producer, is a shame to destroy the Matchbox history!!
It really is sad to see the Matchbox name having been attached to this product…but I think we should focus on the positive - how great the products made under the Matchbox name today are. This was made many years ago, which this soap idea shows they hit rock bottom.
bot hot wheels and matchbox have done this with the cheapo car . that car is far from a hot wheels or matchbox quality id like to know how that all works , legally . that is very clear false advertising . notice the matchbox word is quoted "matchbox" ill try to pause so i can read the back of the card
Unfortunately it’s not false advertising. According to a release history of Matchbox…
“In 1992, Matchbox Universal was sold to Tyco Toys. Tyco was an American slot car and toy maker.
In 1997, Mattel aquired Tyco and all of its subsidaries - including Matchbox.
Also In 1997, IBN International, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota was licensed by Mattel to market a 'Matchbox' labeled bath soap bars and shampoo products that included a Summer made casting within the package.”
@@JimSilva-SilvaDiecastCustoms riiiiiiight matchbox's shaky and sad brand history i forgot ! sad reminder but thank you as a "collector" shoulda guessed cause i knew this . that being said i do very very much love some of the macau era .hey at least its not total counterfeit then . had some shitty life times around 95-98 including uh leaving "home" at 17 . regardless of not having a place to live and very little cash i ALWAYS dragged my friends to toyrus here in my small prairie town i should have seen these then hafta dig thru the brains . god i loved tru in the late 90's . had i bought more toys from then id have some $$$ all the awesome transformers . both tragic and happy memories . i aint old but not young thanks for reply
