- Making of ZIL 131 MAGNUM -a ZIL 131 with EFI and a turbocharger.
No internal modifications were made to the engine and the engine wasn't taken apart for further examination. Only thing we changed were the intake manifold gaskets!

To be honest, I've been quite lazy and no real proggress has happened.
But, I have plans!!
One is to raise compression ratio by modifying combustion chamber and getting the larger pistons/cylinder sleeves (where can I get the piston / cylinder sleeve kit or a complete ZIL 375 engine, CHEAP??) and crew cab for a chassis mod?
I'm also thinking of getting the LPG and ethanol flex fuel possibilities. These need Megasquirt3 to be installed so I guess the current EFI kit will be for sale at some point. I will let you know if the time comes!

Last time I calculated the average consumption, it was 58l/100km. At that time, there was offroad, urban cruising, and some highway.
After that, I've modified the fuel mapping and also ignition timing and am not aware of the effect.
HP? No idea. We have a certain "long" hill nearby. In stock condition I had to shift down to the 1st gear, now I can run it on 4th gear.

However, the tuning approach we made before that was incorrect. I made alterations in the tuning afterwards, but haven't had good comparison measurements afterwards.

Your idea to run it on LPG and/or ethanol has merits, my friend. There are two ways to profit from it:
In Russia, ZILs made for gaseous fuels usually have cylinder heads modified for higher CR, about 11:1 - there are even factory made heads of that type, so you may see if you can get such heads from Russia. This would also make it more efficient in terms of fuel for HP.
Your approach of up-boreing would work as well, of course, and could also make your engine more efficient, depending on your driving profile, but you'd need to either have your sleeves and pistons custom made or import them from the States (ZIL V8s being a copy of some Ford engine).
Both would leave precious little room for boost, though, especially the up-boreing option, since the big end remains the same.
The second way would be to just run very high boost, on both ethanol and LPG, it can be as high as to reach effective compression of around 16:1, maybe more if you get those fancy spark plugs - or if plasma plugs become available, haha :D That equals plenty of boost, around 2 bar absolute :) And it would be the easiest way for you, since you already have turbochargers installed.

Нет не каких специальных головок для работы сжиженном газе для ЗИЛ 130 нет, а этот двигатель хорошо подходит, для установки турбины, потому что у него маленькая степень сжатия 6,5 так что с поршневой делать не чего не нужно. А вот есть 7 литровая версия этого двигателя от автобуса ЛиАЗ и версия на 92 бензине от Урала.
Ахренет надо же сколько времени, сил а главное мозгов надо. Уважаю братан привет из Казахстана. Тысячу лайк поставил бы...

I think EFI mod would be easy to sell as a package. Customer would need to send his distributor, water neck and intake manifold for modifications.
Turbo kit would be a bit more difficult as I didn't make any jigs. If only I had an extra engine to work with...

Как я понял, основная задача этого проекта - ни каких внешних изменений и замены двигателя. Я думаю, многие заметили по качеству проделанных работ, что делались они не в российском гараже :) Про капремонт молчу. Я даже не сомневаюсь, что они его сделали и отбалансировали все, что нужно.
Иностранцам важно сохранить оригинальность необычного автомобиля. Если туда впихнуть дизель от катерпиллера, то ни какой ценности эат машина уже не будет представлять. Они даже ручки в салоне сделали в стиле оригинальной кабины.
Вспоминаются советские Линкольны с двигателем от ГАЗ-53. Ну так же проще, чем искать родные запчасти в штатах. И это еще по божески. Встречал Кадиллак с двигом от Волги. Вот это реально грустно.
Проект отличный. Очень круто и грамотно. Ну и культура ремонта сильно отличается от нашей.

нельзя осуждать людей за свап, ну если поломался мотор и никак не восстановить или вся машина умрет или свап от чего то доступного.
Ты начал за здравие а закончил чушью. Да. Круто, что они пытаются сохранить оригинальность. Но в совке американские запчасти ты бы не достал в 100% случаев. Ты бы не всегда достал бы запчасти даже для советской техники ибо дефицит. И тогда машина имеет два пути, либо в металлолом либо ездить на советских агрегатах. Поэтому какие то претензии к тем, кто сохранил машину на ходу, делать тупо.

At first I thought of twin turbo, but even so the engine bay is big, locating them would of been "difficult". Altough I have some further plans, will be needing a ZIL 375YA engine for that ;)

A bit late question, but how much fuel does it consume after the project? Cause the original V8 engine as far as I know goes for 40-50/100.

Greetings!A lot of work has been done, I have one question for you.Has anything been changed on the piston or has the original one remained? I'm just afraid that the original pistons may not be enough for a long time due to the increased thermal load and increased pressure.
Stock block, stock pistons, stock rods, stock crank. The engine has no problems to handle the extra power, only thing that needs to be upgraded is the clutch and transmission (suitable would be URal 375d trans). Good and precise engine management is the key for engine longevity, stock carb and dizzy ignitions is not the best :D

Да, соглашусь работа проделана большая ,но это так для души . По мне так лучше один зилок с катерпиллером и коробкой с 6 повышенной чем 3 с родным пускай и с турбиной.С катерпиллером ,не долго на заводе ставили,но не пошло типо дорого.А на самом деле НЕ ДАЛИ потому что хорошая машина получилась,там в принципе не чему ломаться шприцуй и масло меняй .а движку сноса нет он работает как электрический, а не как наше Г ведро с гайками.зато впереди планеты всей. Шасси копеечное , движок перекинул на новое и катайся ещё пол жизни. Как мне надоело вечно чего нибудь ломается течёт.
Ну,этим ребятам хотелось ездить на родном двигателя...

Hi! Thanks for video again! Your project is popular among adequate customizers across Europe (not only former USSR). Our club is also using it as a reference. We recently bought soviet truck GAZ-66 with V8 4.3L engine. Conceptually engine is similar to ZIL-131, just a bit smaller. On the way from Finland to Norway special pain was mountain roads, so there is an idea to turbocharge this engine for use in Scandinavia. What kind of turbo would you recommend for such a truck? Most interesting RPMs around 2500-3000. Thank you in advance!

The engine is similar, but it's pretty much completely different in every way.
The turbo I use is a T3/T4 sized Master Power with 49,5mm turbine in .48a/r housing and 50mm compressor in .50a/r T04E housing. This works because the exhaust headers are quite long and large in volume.
I would say that similar sized turbo would be OK, for example from a Garrett GT32 series.
We have available a new model Master Power that is with .63a/r turbine housing and similar sized wheels.
If you are planning a twin turbo, then the turbos should be smaller, I would say GT17-GT22 series sizing, but I would go with a single unit.

The pipe is normal 48,3x2,6mm mild steel pipe and is TIG welded.

Strange, I thought I replied to your message, but now it's gone. Thanks a lot, your support will be useful anyway, especially taking into account your experience in russian engines. We are building here in Norway replica of police/secret service car with V8 from truck, 4.2l (engine I recently bought from Finland, was used on Finnish military truck GAZ-66). We have actually two engines, and one is going to be turbocharged. We need some help with choosing of proper turbocharger, and coupling it properly with carburetor (blow through or draw through schemes are considered). Not sure if it is allowed to put links here (maybe that is why message was gone), but you can see videos with our projects on my channel. There is couple of videos with junky car, we are restoring and some videos with engines we have.
Is the engine now straight gasoline or still capable of burning a mixture?
Technically it's quite possible and could be done properly with adding an ethanol sensor to fuel line.

How about fuel consuption? Did you tried to measure it?
On the road it was much better, but of course it has lot's more of power and that power needs fuel ;)
