I MET ALAN HALE JR. IN HIS RESTAURANT THE LOBSTER BARREL IN THE 80'S AND HE ACTED LIKE HE KNEW ME HIS WHOLE LIFE. WHAT A CLASS GUY HE WAS AND YES HE HAD HIS SKIPPERS CAP ON THAT DAY.
I saw an old reunion of them on a daytime talk show, and when they introduced Alan Hale the crowd went nuts! Standing ovation, it took 10 minutes before they could introduce the rest of the cast and they were all there amazingly enough
Even though Gilligan’s Island was not particularly one of my favorite shows, when I did watch, Alan Hale was my favorite. He was fun, and I loved the dynamic between the Skipper and Gilligan. He was obviously determined and ambitious to make that trek to the audition. He was the perfect Skipper!
One of the toughest guys around, he broke his arm/shoulder falling out of a coconut tree during filming didn’t say a word until days wrap up, then off to hospital. Just don’t make men like that anymore he was a one off.
I love Alan Hale. He was a person with work ethics, and a humanitarian. He didn't just give $$$. He went to hospitals and visited with the children in there. He had a friend he did this with. He was not a complainer. He did his job and he was a kind person. What more does this world really need. ❤
Great story Rick. Loved Alan Hale Jr. He and Bob Denver were a team made in Heaven. A similar story about Andy Clyde, one of the original Keystone Kops, when he went to an early audition in his career. During the audition, Andy was asked by the director if he knew how to ride a Bull? Andy replied, "How do you think I got to this interview ? They were the real Stars!!!!
60 years ago Southwest Utah was quite isolated. It’s not surprising, at the time, that he was able to hitchhike from St. George to Vegas because it was safer and people were more trusting in that part of the country. Today a person would likely be helicoptered from the shoot to an airport. Even Saint George has a commercial airport now.
😅🤣😂 you could not be more right! The roads from St. George to Nevada are completely different. What took many hours now takes one or two. It's a whole different world from back then. I'm that old. 😁
THAT is true dedication, and from what I've read this is typical of Alan Hale Jr. He ran a restaurant in Los Angeles after the show ended and NEVER had any trouble getting people to work at his place because he was such a great boss! As to the show, when I watched it as a kid, I thought they were supposed to be father and son. Only later did I find out that that was not supposed to be true. That shows how well they worked together. This show is a perfect example of superb casting; Every actor was perfect in their roll.
This is an awesome story and shows that his dedication paid off. Nobody else could play the role of the Skipper. Alan Hale was perfect for the part, and he and Bob Denver did have great chemistry.
The whole concept of hitchhiking to and from a flight is unimaginable now. To think he depended on a thumb, a smile, and a duffel, to get to the audition is a unique snapshot of the early '60's.
sometimes I just watch your videos for the comfort of your kind voice and for the evident love you have for your subject matter. Thanks for being there, Ric
What i liked about alan hale jr was that he was a dedicated actor he didnt want to emulate his father alan hale sr he was famous in his own right and he had a great personality got along well with his fellow Gilligan's island cast and he was an all-out great guy
a great story and shows what type man he was to go through Hell so to speak to get a part.........he loved playing the Skipper as mentioned he wore the outfit all his life....even made a sick child's day when he visited him at the hospital and told the child the Show was returning and He would play Gilligan this time............at the time Alan Hale JR. was sick and lost a lot of weight and the child noticed it...so he told that story to explain his appearance.
I think the Movie that Alan Hale Jr was filming was called "Bullet For The Badman." What dedication Alan Hale Jr had on getting the part for the Skipper on Gilligan's Island.
I have loved Alen Hale Jr. In everything he has done. Seems like is must have been great to have the honor to know him. I love the part about the horse transportation. Western fan girl here......what Film was he working on? Always looking for a good o western I haven't seen!
It's nice to read about Alan Hale's friendship w/ Skip Homeier. I've seen Mr. Homeier on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, and i'm happy to read what a good friend he was. As far as the audition goes, I've read that Alan Hale got the part because he was the only actor who could hit Gilligan w/ his hat and not appear to be mean. I've read that 1 actor who auditioned but failed to win the role was Carroll O'Connor. Imagine Archie Bunker as the Skipper! :)
The western Hale and Homeier made together in 1964 appears to have been Bullet for a Badman starring Audie Murphy and Darren McGavin. Homeier was an excellent heavy in old westerns, one of my favorites being The Tall T with Randolph Scott.
When I was a kid, my dad and I were watching an old movie. Alan Hale Sr.was on it. My dad told me " There's the Skipper's dad." Those two were like twins!!.
Thank you Rick! That was inspiring! If you truly believe in yourself and are determined, there is no obstacle you cannot overcome. Alan Hale obviously proved that!
I think it depended upon who picked him up, if the person was a fan of westerns etc then maybe yes. After Gilligans island he was a household name, before that he was known for Westerns etc
I remember Alan Hale from an episode of the Andy Griffith show where he tried to steal Barney’s girlfriend. Alan definitely had charisma and he even called Barney little buddy a few times.
That is crazy! (cool). I'm so glad that it all came together, especially after learning of the 'tale of this castaway '. I remember Alan Hale Jr in the Clint Eastwood western, 'Hang 'm High, and in The Wild Wild West episode 'The Night of the Sabatini Death' (also starring Jim Backus). If you've not seen that episode, and you like GI, you have to watch (at least the closing scene) it! Thanks for the post Rick! ps, Skip (now thats a good first name for a friend of Alans) Homier was wonderful in two good Star Trek episodes.....
Wow! I knew he made the trip from Utah, but never new his friend stayed there with the horses the whole time. I wondered how they pulled it off, without the Utah producers finding out. Thanks Rick! I thought I knew most everything about Gilligan's Island!
Excellent video I found it very interesting to learn this. It really shows his dedication and willingness to work hard for something he wanted. Great video keep it up.
Alan Hale was not only a great actor but a good friend. Him and Errol Flynn acted together and were good friends too. Alan often was in Errol"s movies. Like Robin Hood and the Sea Hawks. Maybe others. In real life, they often played jokes on each other. Alan Hale always stood by his friend, Errol in spite of Errol's being accused of rape. Which was not true. And other problems he had. Proves what a great friend, Alan was to him and each other. Good video, Rick! Interesting also. Wanted to share about them both. Got info from Errol's documentary, "My Wicked Ways." Good video to see, Rick. Take care.
I believe that Alan Hale, Jr. as "The Skipper" is the greatest singular role in film history. Really. I've always believed that his part was so believable, I couldn't imagine him NOT being the Skipper. And, according to rumors, he continued this role in real life.
You seem so young... I appreciate this and the Lucy content.... did you make a video about this show ending and how the movie sorta solidified the shows demise?
There's no way Alan made it from St. George to LA and back in 6 hours. It's a 2 hour drive from St. George to Las Vegas, then you have the airport, the flight, another aiport, the drive to the studio and the audition...that alone is likely more than 6 hours. I'd say you're looking at at least 12 hours for the trip there and back. So props to his buddy...not 6 but 12 hours waiting!
It would appear the movie he was making with his friend Skip was "Bullet for a Badman". Wonder if it was a good omen that the "Skippers" good buddy was named "Skip"?
I agree with you Rick, he was not just the perfect Skipper... he WAS the Skipper ! Without his chemistry with Bob Denver, the show wouldn’t have lasted so long.
Rick. As always, great video. I once heard that Carroll O'Connor auditioned for the role of The Skipper. Let me know if it's true that Archie Bunker almost appeared on "Gilligan's Island."
That is some traveling! What a terrific guy. Most people would've blown it off! I have seen him in some old b&w wrsterns... But in my heart he will always be the skipper❤
Hey Rick, another great video! Thanks... I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Jonas Grumby (i.e. The Skipper) other than the great Alan Hale, Jr. But, do you have any information on other actors who were up for the part? Someone here in the comments mentioned Carroll O'Connor. Do you know if that's true. Relying on you, Rick; you're the sitcom guru! 😁 98.6K subs! So close... Best always and be hopeful, Paul
I remember hearing this story from Mike Rowe on his podcast. I don't think he mentioned Skip Homeier by name. Skip appeared on Star Trek (original) a couple of times. The oldest film I saw him in was when he was young (Skippy Homeier). The film was "Tomorrow the World!" 1944. Skip gets more points for being a good friend.
From all the comments I have read, I think you and I were the only ones to pick up on the name Skip Homeier! As soon as I heard it, I remembered him from Star Trek as well!
Funny story. The Skipper once picked up my girlfriend, up off the floor. Lol I was doing a show at the Wiltshire Ebell Theater and he was in the audience, my girlfriend tripped and landed on the floor. Alan Hail Jr stepped out of his seat and as he picked her up said “Are you alright little lady” , recognizing him she was speechless and could only nod her head.
I'm surprised that they had so much trouble casting him. Gilligan and Skipper were basically just Laurel and Hardy go to the beach, there must have been a zillion Laurel and Hardy imitators knocking around Hollywood, looking for work.
Definitely this was kept secret from me.The people who were newborn babies during late 1965, knew nothing as well. It's the entire generation that didn't know this. 🚼
That is something....to want a part so much you’re willing to go through that to get to the audition....and lets not forget the cut ear incident....put a bank aid on it and carry on! He was from another generation
Always hated that show from the time I was very young (yeah, i was REALLY different) but the actors were top notch and true professionals. Alan did a series in the early '50s - the name escapes me - but it was a detective show that ran two seasons, kind of like Hart to Hart of the 1950s. Check it out if you can find it. Russell Johnson starred with Peter Breck in my favorite TV western Black Saddle. Bob Denver will forever be Maynard G. Kreps to me, but lets not forget The Ghostbusters with Forest Tucker.
Rick, I have heard that he was first found in a restaurant when Sherwood Scwartz was dining and heard his voice and saw him and thought he would be great as the skipper. Totally different story of how he was found for the part. Do you know if any part of this is true?
That part is true. Sherwood was dining with his wife one day and spotted Alan across the room. The next day Sherwood phoned Alan's agent and asked him could Alan come do a screen test for the skipper.
Cause the "Skipper" was just the king of "cool" That scene where you see them in the cave "busts me up" When Skipper hears that Gilligan played tic-tac-toe by himself. Skipper (in that tight space, hits him with his hat!") LOL!!!
