Russell Johnson flew 44 missions as a navigator before his plane was shot down. Another Purple Heart recipient, Charles Bronson, flew 25 missions as a tailgunner, also on a bomber.

I think that if it wasn't for the professor being on the island none of them would have did that well. The professor got them through everything. A great salute to Russell Johnson for his service. Thank you so much.

I saw an interview with Russell years ago (like 20+). He seemed like a genuinely nice and humble guy. Without him Gilligan's Island wouldn't have been even half as good.

Wow, I had no clue that Russell Johnson was a true war hero, you're, right, so many of us don't realize that our favorite actors had very interesting lives before they became actors. Russell Johnson, thank you for your service!! ☺

Russell Johnson was also in the tv series The Silient Service about WW2 submarines. Even Gilighan had a bit part in an episode. Even with a tiny role in a serious drama his comedic talent shines through a little.

Back in my early teens I learned quite by accident about the military history of First Lt. Russell Johnson. I was about 12 in 1978 when I discovered Mr. Johnson on the Twilight Zone as a scientist with a time machine. I became very interested in Mr. Johnson's career because I found him a unusually smart person. Thanks for all the history of the man. He really was extraordinary fellow. A twice decorated WW 2 hero. I always knew he was going to be great! He looks like a hero. Maybe someone can make a biographical movie about him m Totally awesome! Great video! God bless you and your family! David

Many of the old actors were exceptional people, unlike the current crop. I can't watch contemporary movies and tv for a ton of reasons, often due to the repellent actors themselves.

Great Stuff! It's funny how many of those 60's Sit-Coms were also Veterans! Eddie Albert drove an amphibious transport in the Pacific & Risked his neck to save wounded & Pinned-down Marines at Tarawa! But My personal favorite is the story of Lt. Col. Jimmy Stewart! Thanks Again!

Russell Johnson was awesome in '50s Sci-fi films; he portrayed characters who possessed great intellect, which apparently was not a 'stretch' for him. His 'telephone lineman' character, in "It Came From Outer Space" was the thing nightmares are made of, and "This Island - Earth", having first seen the film in '71, I remember my father quipping "Interocitor",,, "Coconuts"....
