I saw Russell Johnson on a Foundations interview and he was saying that Tina had her "problems" (his words) even during the filming of the originals. Said she was a real pro during the shoots, but could be a bit "difficult" when not shooting. BTW, he's a pretty interesting guy. Bomber navigator in the Pacific during WW2, and was shot down and survived. Played a lot of "heavy bad guys" in a lot of Westerns during the 1950's early 60's.

Nowadays, most actors embrace their breakout role and accept the fact that they will be associated with that character forever. Back in the early days of television, many felt, as did Tina (and, hello Eve Plumb) that it essentially ruined their career through typecasting. Tina was quite vocal about this, and in an earlier video you even revealed that she would have been written out in Season 4 due to her wish to leave the production. So, I’m sure that when the movie offer came around, she wasn’t really interested, but threw out that figure knowing there was an overwhelming chance it wouldn’t be accepted, but if it was, she could cry all the way to the bank. I think I’m more recent years, she’s come to embrace the Gilligan fame (much as Eve Plumb has reconciled herself with “Jan”).

I don't think nor ever got that Eve Plumb hated her role or feared typecasting. She always came back for reunions and the spin off. The only thing she said no thank you to was the variety hour because her father and other influential people in her life said it would hurt her to do it when she had a movie lined up that would interfere. Turns out they were right because while outside of Brady's she might not have been in front of the camera much but she did well for herself behind it. I'd argue shes also probably the only Brady kid that didnt have some form of child celebrity curse. Now if you mean Maureen McCormick then you'd be right since she hated being typecast along with living up to everyone thinking she WAS Marcia, and was no small part of her escapism with drug use. (which her autobiography says that was something she still struggles with).

According to Sherwood Schwartz, Tina Louise was a pain through the entire filming of the series. She kept wanting more scenes, more close ups and more lines. He had to remind her that the show was called "Gilligan's Island" not "Ginger's Island"! She wanted nothing to do with the show afterward. I can't imagine the patience Sherwood had to show toward Tina when she kept changing her mind on whether to be in the reunion movie or not. Quite frankly, I thought the movie was just fine without her. She thought she was too good for the show but she doesn't seem to realize that playing Ginger is the only thing anyone recognizes her for. She should have appreciated what side her bread was buttered on.

After all, it wasn’t named “Ginger.” I think Sherwood did the right thing in recasting the role. Actually if you do some digging she was pretty amicable and friends with most the cast even if they weren't besties (she probably was closest with Dawn). She never wanted to be typecast and her narcissism caused a lot of conflict, especially when you consider she definitely was a star on the rise before Gilligan when you look at her credits. She felt rightly so she and the cast deserved more money because Sherwood screwed all the cast on being underpaid and syndication. Gilligan by the 80's was raking in tons of money on syndication and they never got a dime, she finally wanting to be compensated is pretty fair.

The $1.3 million budget is negotiable. Everything is negotiable.
At my last job, my department was allocated $85,000 for increases, which came out to approximately a 2% increase for the staff.
At my level, I could not force the executives to allocate more funding for my department. But that does not mean that the money did not exist.
The CEO has a personal net worth of $50 billion.
So to say that there was no funding available for an employee to get a much higher increase, is absurd.
My former employer spent a ½ million on computer hardware that sat in our warehouse for 5 years. Why? because someone else's budget allowed them to spend the money, and they did, so that they would not have their budget cut for the next year.
So my team was offered $85,000, while in our warehouse, $500,000 worth of hardware was sitting on shelves, going down in value.
My point is that if Sherwood Schwartz wanted to budget another $50,000 for the show, he could have. If he did not have the final say, then someone else at the studio could have done so. NBC would not miss another $50,000.
Using "It's the budget", is just a negotiating excuse. The employees hear that as "There's no more money in the vault", when the person that owns the vault can easily add more to the vault.
So either Schwartz did not have the authority to increase the budget, did not have the spine to reach out to the person that could increase the budget, or simply felt that Tina Louise was not worth it.

I remember watching an interview with Bob Denver. He mentioned Tina telling him that Gilligan's Island was destroying her career. She was typecast and was no longer being offered the same types of meaty dramatic projects as before Gilligan. He went on to say that "she was correct, but she accepted the role." No actor in the early days of television could have predicted how television would shape their future careers. Another incident Mr. Denver mentioned was Tina's name in the opening credits. From my understanding, Tina always had issues with the tone of Gilligan's Island's scripts. It was her belief that she was signing on to higher quality production.
So to get the full story, a person will have to research all the opinions the cast and crew had on Tina's relationship with the show during the original run and the TV movies, as well as Tina's opinion on her Gilligan's experience.
Personally, I was not happy with Mr. Schwartz's replacement. Yes, Judith Baldwin fulfilled the physical characteristics, but she portrayed Ginger as an airhead. Ginger Grant was never an airhead. When the time was appropriate to achieve her goals, Ginger took on the ever-so-slight characteristics of an airhead.
Casandra Peterson (Elvira) mentioned she was in the running to replace Tina. Mr. Schwartz told her that "she was his Ginger." Then one of the other producers saw her performing with the Groundlings in a gynecologist sketch. The producer was outraged. He told her that his production had no place for "her kind of element." I discovered this tidbit on IMDB. It sounds like Casandra would have been the best replacement, but would the world have lost out on Elvira?

Ginger wasn't my favorite in GI, and at the age of eight to ten, I did not understand and did not know what a production company did or was... I think TL's error was not playing better with the cards she was dealt. Yes, she wanted more and better dramatic roles but in conversations and interviews should have placed the show in its best light - a fun and light comedy carrying nice morals. And left it at that. I think she would have benefited more from an approach of the sort, "Yes, it is fun and a lot of hours and work, but I'm shopping several serious roles with the only problem being the time issue, so, the roles must be carefully selected, seriouss, relevant and allow me to artistically represent my dramatic training and talent and express my love of and becoming ever better at drama - the challenge is the little time available around what a loved and popular show Gilligan's Island is and I must accept only the rare and wonderful."
Instead, her irritation, lack of respect for, and dismissal of the property and the other actors, etc., really does not speak well of her, her i.q., judgment, and more importantly, I do not think her acting life was best served by her blowing out as obviously superior to the whole shooting match.

Being a lifetime fan of the show and still to this day watch it daily, I was very disappointed when Tina Louise, didn’t appear on the rest of the films made after.
I think everyone would always relate her to Gilligan’s Island because of it being such a hit but it really hasn’t stopped many others actors and actresses from moving up and on.
I really think she had a thorn in her side over the Mary Ann versus Ginger that she could never seem to remove, hate to say that.
If she would have just went ahead and agreed to do the movies I think it would have helped her out more for her future career.
I think in my opinion by her not agreeing to make the films came across to many potential future producers as her being hard to deal with, spoiled, snobby, I’m too good to associate with common actors, worth more than I think I am.

I am old enough to remember the "Gilligan" 1978 remake - to be honest, I thought it was a dud. In my view, it was somewhat better than the "Patty Duke Show" remake (from twenty-plus years back) or the equally dreadful, "Mary and Rhoda" reunion from around the same time. The point being - leave the old shows alone and let them bask in their own good light!

When she was origionally approached to do the show, Tina Louise was under the misapprehension that she would me the main star of the show, and when she found out that that was not the case, there were some sour grapes from the start. She ran hot and cold on Gilligan's Island ever since. Like Max Bear Jr., (Jethro Bodine) she grew to dislike the part that made her a household name, because it typecast her. I believe she has finally come to terms with the role of Ginger now, and is embracing it for what it is.

Of all the characters that could be replaced, Ginger was the one most easily replaceable because she had no endearing qualities. A hot body, yeah, but she was never loveable and often unlikeable.
Even the characters Thurston and Lovey Howell were likeable for their comedic qualities and also sometimes showed they really did care about their fellow castaways more than money. Like Hollywood itself, the character Ginger was shallow, narcissistic, and manipulative. This is not to say that such a character wasn't essential for the storyline, but it does mean that viewers never formed a deep personal attachment to the character Ginger (as played by Tina Louise) as they did in the case of other characters, especially Maryann (as played by Dawn Wells).
That said, as a Gilligan Island's fan, it really would have been nice to have all the original cast in the follow-up movies. Everyone else could make it but not good ol' Tina Louise.

Tina Louise had already appeared on TV dramas like Burke's Law, and several other drama shows. She may have been uncomfortable with slapstick comedy, as Gilligan's Island was. After Gilligan, Tina Louise did some movies like The Happy Ending (1969). She has also written some childrens' books, and done other good projects. As for why she didn't return for Gilligan's Island reboots, it's her business. I hope she is doing well.

Many people, especially the actors, forget that the cost in making a professional film is very costly and that many other people besides the actors must get paid and their salaries come out of the film budget, too. Even in Hollywood's heyday of the 30s-50s, studios watched their pennies like a Scrooge (even though they had many, many pennies! LOL). Directors, producers, writers, cinematographers, camera operators, grips, set designers, electricians and lighting, and carpenters and more....must get paid, too. I grew up in Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s and I remember some salary disputes/discussions that went on before production could commence. But, for the most part, they went smooth. Beginning in the 70s, though, it began to pick up steam along with actors and actresses' egos.
