Alan Hale Jr. was the first celebrity I ever met back in 1988 in Houston. His hands just swallowed my hands when I shook his. He was full of love and it showed. I hope to see him in Heaven one day. RIP sir.
It really is true....not one negative word has ever been said about the man. I remember the day he passed away, I was working at a radio station when the news came over the wire. The entire staff was so sad that I don't recall anyone talking to each other the rest of the afternoon. It was a large piece of our childhood that left us that day.
My dad was a golfing pal of Hale's and I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times. Wow, what a warm and wonderful man he was. Thank you for this tribute!
I was a kid watching his various roles as an actor, especially Gilligan's Island in the 1960's. I was a teenager when my dad, brother, and I went to see him at the Lobster Barrel in the early 1970's. I was very much impressed at how friendly and lovable he was to us as his restaurant guests. Rest in peace wonderful Alan Hale Jr. You were truly a beautiful human being.
Alan Hale and Alan Hale Jr. were both great and had that big, happy smile. You could just tell they were down to earth and nice folks without a clip on their shoulder.
I used to see him washing off the sidewalk in front of his restaurant quite often on my way to work...stopped and said hello once..what a friendly fellow...greatly missed.
What a beautiful tribute to Alan Hale, Jr. He was my favorite character in Gilligan's Island. He did have a lovable quality about him that made you want to know him. His smiling face makes you feel good and he was also very funny!
Continue to rest in peace Mr. Hale...our beloved "Skipper". Great presentation of this video, excellent work! Good tribute, the music went well with it. Nice to see all his accomplishments, the music added more sadness to it, but in a good way. 😢 Thanks for sharing friend. 👍👍
He was an absolute sweetheart. As a kid, my parents would take me to his restaurant (Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel) and he'd personally serve me a Shirley Temple on the house. He was so charismatic and amazing.
I ALWAYS HEARD HE WAS A VERY SWEET MAN, AND HE ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED BEING CALLED THE SKIPPER. INSTEAD OF BEING MAD AT BEING TYPECAST, HE EMBRACED THE SKIPPER, AND CONTINUED TO WEAR THE SKIPPER HAT IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE OCCASIONALLY.
Wonderful tribute. Wished I could have met him. I remember seeing his restaurant on La Cienega Blvd. It closed before I had a chance to patronize it. Saw an episode of Casey Jones where he meets up with Russell Johnson. Russell comes up with an invention to make automatic railroad car couplers! ... The professor at work pre-Gilligan's Island. What a hoot!
Alan Hale Jr. looked a lot like his father, Alan Hale Sr.(also a great actor). In fact, I once saw my parents watching a black and white movie called, "Action in the North Atlantic," and I thought I saw Alan Hale Jr. in it because the guy looked a lot like the Skipper, he was even wearing a hat just like the Skipper's. I asked my parents, "Isn't that the guy who played Skipper on Gilligan's Island?" and my mom said, "No. That's actually his father." I was amazed. The resemblance was remarkable!
Awe, what can I say but this is a lovely tribute. The background music added nicely to the mood. Made me cry to think Alan Hale is gone from this world and I will never meet him. However, he is in a better place. RIP dear Skipper.
Growing up, my two brothers and I used to watch reruns of Gilligan's Island all the time. We were each given autograph books, and one day we were surprised when our dad came home and gave each of us our autograph books back with autographs from Alan Hale, who was visiting our city. Sadly, those autograph books are long lost, but we were excited to get them at the time.
i like the skipper because he was the fearless leader maybe because of his dad. but it seemed gillian got to have more fun for all his misadventures. a comment for those who put this tribute to the skipper. i like the format of showing. and i thought it is done respectfully and tastefully. and the flute playing of a simon and Garfunkel song brought back good memories and i think the song was the sound of silence. keep up the good work. i have subscribed and i heard it helps the you tube algorithm. thank you. may you have a good day and with the help of god tomorrow might be better.
Got to see him in person at a travel show in L.A. in the late 1960s. He was such a gentleman. A family member accidentally bumped into him. He tipped his skipper hat and said to her, "Pardon me ma'am."
I love Alan Hale Jr as the Skipper. I used to watch Gilligan’s Island after school. Interesting tidbit: When he guest started on The Andy Griffith Show as Jeff Pruitt, he calls Barney “little buddy”, the same nickname he had for Gilligan.
He and his father were cornerstones of the golden age of the entertainment industry. He new everybody in the business, and he was respected by all. When you think of the ledgindary stars of Hollywood, like Errol Flynn and many others, remember that they considered him a family friend. He had an amazing life. Most importantly, he was a nice guy.
A great video. I watched Gilligan's Island as a child when it was first broadcast. For a short while it was on against the Sally Fields show "Gidget", which my older sister wanted to watch. Our mother made us alternate weeks as a compromise. But "Gidget" soon sank & we watched G.I. every week. And I've been watching it ever since. The show has never been off the air! God bless Alan Hale & the other castaways!
Beautiful tribute. A wonderful man Alan Hale jr. He never refused to give an autograph to a fan always wore a smile along with his Skipper hat in public He was a very grateful man and was always proud to answer to the name skipper. My favorite character on Gilligan's Island. He is sorely missed. R.I.P. Skipper and Trinket. BTW...I love Alan, but he wasn't the only actor to star in 2 series at the same time. The star of Sherwood's other TV series, Robert Reed was a regular on Mannix as LT Adam Tobias while doing the Brady Bunch...
At 7:07, the film's title was not "U.S. Periscope", but "Up Periscope", not that it makes the slightest bit of difference to such a successful life, especially in terms of having been a good man.
That smile is something! Love it. While on a business trip, my father had the pleasure of meeting Alan Hale at his restaurant. Said he was one of the kindest, most genuine people he'd ever met. Thanks for the memories and RIP Skipper.
I would imagine meeting Alan Hale in person would have been a memorable and exciting experience. I agree with so many of the comments made here. He was a pleasant man with great accomplishments.
I remember him primarily as Casey Jones in that series. I was a little too "sophisticated" at age 15 to pay much attention to Gilligan's Island, but Casey Jones and the Cannonball Express was right down my alley when I was 9.
I saw him on an Andy Griffith episode where he was after Barney's girl friend Thelma Lou. Every time he would encounter Barney, he'd call him " little buddy" which would anger Barney.
What a wonderful tribute to a great man. I met him once when I went to his restaurant here in L A. He was as nice as you would imagine. Full of life. I do recall also seeing him on an episode of Hazel in the early 60s as well.
myrottndog626, thanks for viewing. Very glad you and Chris were able to view this video as a lot of love went into it. Hope all is well with Lana. Please tell Chris hi from me.
I hope you don't mind a question! Did he ever explode on set? It always seemed he was about to get angry at Gilligan, even when something bad wasn't going on during the scene. Like, he would be very polite, but just on the verge of about to burst open with anger. Was that just his character or what? I always wondered! Grew up watching Gilligan's island, age 8+ I think!
I met this wonderful man at the San Jose airport, in California. At the time (1983 - 1985 ), I was a car rental agent at Hertz. He was standing in line, waiting to rent a car from Avis. I asked him why not Hertz ? He said, "Because Avis, tries harder."
Thanks for this sensitive tribute. I did not know a lot of this information on Alan Hale. Truly one of our more memorable actors. I like the fact he was such a nice individual in real life.
Thanks for this splendid tribute to one of my all time heroes. He will always be remembered as the Skipper, but he did a lot of other great work as well.
In the early 1970's, when I was very young lol, my cousin took me to eat at Alan Hale Jr.'s restaurant, The Lobster Barrel. While dining there Alan Hale Jr would walk up to each table to greet you with a smile and ask if your meal was to your liking. I was very surprise to see him there, but was later told he did that very often. I remember how he seemed to be so genuine, humble and down to earth. I was surprised by this considering how famous he was. By the way, the food was delicious. I'm sure I had lobster bisque!
One, of THE best actor memorial videos seen. Thank you. On a side note, it was always a shame that Tina couldn't embrace the one role that will forever define her. At minute 5:55, her beauty, and certainly her acting skills, were a perfect match for her part and the rest of the cast and show. She could have rode that fame so well, even up to today. The public would have certainly showed their appreciation.
Great job! Very nicely done. Another western movie Alan was in was The Gunfghter in 1950. He really did have an incredible career, always working which is the sign of a good actor.
Great job on the tribute. Allen has been one of my favorite actors all my life. I wish I could have meet the guy. But I know that he is making people in heaven laughing. R. I. P.
Let's not forget about the countless tv appearances on shows like "Alf" or "Family Fued"...or his semi regular character on " The Good Guys"around 1970, where he got to pal around with his Little Buddy Bob Denver once again .
Memories of my childhood. I got to see him at the Stapleton Airport in Denver Colorado. He had that swagger and I could not take my eyes off of him. He nodded and smiled. I will never forget it.
i dont think they could have found a man anywhere in this world to play the role of skipper jonas grumby better than Alan hale he was ment to be the skipper what a very jolly and friendly man mr.hale was it was like he was born to be the skipper of the s.s.minnow.may he rest in peace.
That's what everybody says not knowing the possibilities. Though an ideal choice considering he played a similar character on The Andy Griffith Show. Bob Denver also appeared on an episode with the Darlings.
His dad Alan Sr was a sidekick of Errol Flynn's in a few movies as well. Father&son were both very much liked by fellow actors, both with a ready laugh& sense of humor, both "big teddy bear" kind of guys.
I vaguely remember Casey Jones but now I have youtube to watch the TV show and didn't know that Alan Hale was Casey and his Son became the Skipper. i also didn't know that Mickey Dolenz went by Mickey Braddock during his TV show as Circus Boy in 1856 because his Father was George Michael Dolenz and famous for his 1956 TV show '"Count of monte cristo " and didn't want to use the same name as the jr. . George Dolenz has a stoke of luck when he was asked to come to a dinner from an extra seat at a Club that his friend was to fill . He aspired to be an Actor in America and left Florida for LA. , so what a shock to find out that the man beside him at the Dinner table that he was speaking has introduced him self as Howard Hughes . George Dolenz was cursed though because Hughes saw him as a European type Restaurant and Night Club owner/manager. He got away from the RKO Studio and did TV while his Son George jr got his start in 1956 and would be one of a Monkee's 10 years later. Alan hale was in a Navy movie and I though it was the Skipper but the B&W " Action in the North Atlantic " was 1943. His father was close to his Sons looks at the same ages once they both were around 30 and over.
I always thought, when he wasn't donning a mustache, Alan Sr. and his son looked almost identical. In fact, there is a James Cagney movie called The Fighting 69th. It's a WWI movie and the whole 69th. battalion is of Irish-American descent. In one scene, Alan Hale Sr. lets his accent slip a little. It goes something to the fact that James Cagney's character says something highly disrespectful about his sergeant (Hale). One of the other characters says "Don't worry, he's his own worse enemy." Referring to Cagney's character. Hale's line is "Not while I'm alive he ain't!" and he sounds just like his son that brief moment.
He seemed like family. I was on my way to work (heavy construction) in the early morning when I heard of his death. Later that morning was our weekly safety meeting. Before the meeting was concluded I had the men take off their hard hats and we placed them over our hearts and had a moment of silence. RIP Skipper.
Remember he reprised his role as Skipper on a 1989 episode of Alf along with Bob Denver Gilligan sadly it would be the last time we'd ever see them together on screen!! He also appeared in a 1987 episode of Growing Pains titled: This Is Your Life. He was Ben's cab driver. Plus he appeared on an episode of The New Gidget also in 1987!
I met him once when friends took me to his restaurant for dinner. He treated all of us as if we had been friends for life. A very nice man.
Alan Hale Jr. was the first celebrity I ever met back in 1988 in Houston. His hands just swallowed my hands when I shook his. He was full of love and it showed. I hope to see him in Heaven one day. RIP sir.

I love the sensitivity that went into this tribute.
It really is authentic and nostalgic.
My dad was a golfing pal of Hale's and I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times. Wow, what a warm and wonderful man he was. Thank you for this tribute!
Title of that movie is " Up.Periscope".
Must have been wonderful.
@@johnbockelie3899 Read the book first, then saw the movie. Both were excellent. ✌

Skipper was the Father figure I always wanted as my Dad when I was growing up, just loved this guy..
RJ Wood Me too!
Absolutely. My father was seriously terrible!
Alan Hale was a wonderful man and his role as the Skipper was so lovable. Touching tribute.
What a warm and bubbly personality.
I used to see him washing off the sidewalk in front of his restaurant quite often on my way to work...stopped and said hello once..what a friendly fellow...greatly missed.
What a great man and fine actor. He is greatly missed.
Thanks for the tribute of Alan Hale. Could not have picked a finer person to honor, and a nice man to boot.
Lots of humanity with this man.
I always thought Alan Hale had a lovely smile and laugh. That's what so warmed me to him.
What a beautiful tribute to Alan Hale, Jr. He was my favorite character in Gilligan's Island. He did have a lovable quality about him that made you want to know him. His smiling face makes you feel good and he was also very funny!
Thank you Sherry for this very moving tribute. It brought loving, sad tears to my eyes. Alan Hale was a GREAT man!
I recall the day Ala Hale Jr passed away. It was an emotional day for me.
Continue to rest in peace Mr. Hale...our beloved "Skipper".
Great presentation of this video, excellent work! Good tribute, the music went well with it.
Nice to see all his accomplishments, the music added more sadness to it, but in a good way. 😢
Thanks for sharing friend. 👍👍
He was an absolute sweetheart. As a kid, my parents would take me to his restaurant (Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel) and he'd personally serve me a Shirley Temple on the house. He was so charismatic and amazing.
Lovely tribute. Thanks for showing so much of Alan Hale’s career.
It made me cry. Who else?😭😭
Same here!
Me too
me too
That was the point of the poster!
Made me cry as well
I grew up with Skipper on Gillian's Island, love it all. I miss him till this day. I agree, there will never be another Skipper.
A lovely and sensitive tribute. The background musical is soothing and adds to the mood. Bravo!!!!!!!!
It most certainly is 😀
I ALWAYS HEARD HE WAS A VERY SWEET MAN, AND HE ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED BEING CALLED THE SKIPPER. INSTEAD OF BEING MAD AT BEING TYPECAST, HE EMBRACED THE SKIPPER, AND CONTINUED TO WEAR THE SKIPPER HAT IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE OCCASIONALLY.
Well said and well put ! What an uplifting soul he was with that kind manner and sweet smile !
Fuck off with the Caps Lock David, you silly old fool.
Wonderful tribute. Wished I could have met him. I remember seeing his restaurant on La Cienega Blvd. It closed before I had a chance to patronize it. RIP Alan Hale, Jr. There aren't enough fine men like you in this crazy world.

Very nice... It's true, never read or heard a single bad word about this man. Very rare for a born and bread Hollywood type.
That's BRED, NOT BREAD.
The skipper was a beautiful man, and this video was a beautiful tribute!
I agree.
An absolute icon he looked and sounded like a great man
@@travels129 I agree.
Class act he was.hats off
Great tribute. I would not miss Gillian’s Island as a child. Good memories!!
love the picture of him and Mary Ann at the end made me cry, like the Jonny Cash video years ago
He had quite an extensive career. I had no idea. Great tribute.
Indeed.
He was actually in 5 series. His last one involved him and Bob Denver running a diner. Can't remember the name of the show. It was funny.
Gilligan drove acool hot rod in that show.
The show was called "The Good Guys" and starred Bob Denver and Herb Edelman.
Thanks for this great tribute to Alan Hale. I wish that I had had the pleasure of meeting him.
Thanks Paul Hogrin. I wish I could have met him as well.
He had a great career and I have also heard over and over again what a nice gentleman Mr Hale was. I sure miss him.
what a great great gentleman
How could you not love the Skipper? Touching tribute.
I've been watching Gilligan's Island season one and two lately...love that show
Bob Silver, I love them too. There are actually three seasons.
i like the skipper because he was the fearless leader maybe because of his dad. but it seemed gillian got to have more fun for all his misadventures.
a comment for those who put this tribute to the skipper. i like the format of showing. and i thought it is done respectfully and tastefully. and the flute playing of a simon and Garfunkel song brought back good memories and i think the song was the sound of silence. keep up the good work. i have subscribed and i heard it helps the you tube algorithm. thank you. may you have a good day and with the help of god tomorrow might be better.

The Skipper had great fashion sense. You can tell he wears everything well with style. Never would have guessed from Gilligans Island.
I love Alan Hale Jr as the Skipper. I used to watch Gilligan’s Island after school.
Interesting tidbit: When he guest started on The Andy Griffith Show as Jeff Pruitt, he calls Barney “little buddy”, the same nickname he had for Gilligan.

Nicely done. I loved the music. It fit well. I Still watch Gilligan's Island and it's still funny to me. I'm 61 years of age.

It goes something to the fact that James Cagney's character says something highly disrespectful about his sergeant (Hale). One of the other characters says "Don't worry, he's his own worse enemy." Referring to Cagney's character. Hale's line is
"Not while I'm alive he ain't!" and he sounds just like his son that brief moment.
+Marty Mcfly ...Cheers Marty, we could use more people like the Skipper these days.
