  • In this video I show the steps and procedures necessary to replace a turbo charger on a 2.7 L eco-boost engine. In this video we are working on a 2015 F150 2wd. with about 170,000 miles. We are experiencing a severe lack of power and the check engine light has illuminated giving code P0299. This is a common code for these eco-boost engines and can be a number of things however in my instance, with this truck the wastegate on the left hand turbo charger was stuck frozen requiring replacement of the turbo charger assembly. Along with the replacement of the turbo charger you’ll need to replace various gaskets O-rings studs and hardware. Below is a complete list of tools and parts you’ll need to get the job done. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave something in the comment section. Thank you for watching

This is an amazing video. Thank you for making it. The part list is amazing also.
I don't need it to repair anything but it certainly shed some light on how complex the replacement actually is. I would try this myself if required.
Some people who have no idea on the cost have said oh no its going to be 5k for a turbo if it goes bad. The turbo assembly is $507 USD at this time. Really makes me feel better about keeping the truck long term.

Read this if you’re looking for more guidance on the TSB regarding white/ blue smoke upon start-up after a cold soak (TSB 19-2188).
I have a 2015 F150 with the 2.7 and I was getting white smoke in the morning. This tutorial is excellent. It provided everything I needed to know to swap the oil line on the driver side turbo. There are a few things worth mentioning though.
    1. You do NOT need to remove the fender liner. I was able to complete almost all work from the top of the truck. Removal of the tire and air intake piping is necessary however. This was super easy though. There are several hoses and sensors connected to the intake pipe attached to the turbo, I counted 6 different ones I believe, so be careful removing them.
    2. No power tools are needed to complete this job. I found hand tools like sockets with extensions and regular wrenches more than adequate given the tight spaces.
    3. In the video I believe the gentleman said a 16 mm wrench was needed to remove the exhaust nut. I found the 16 was too big and used a 15 instead. I used a box-end wrench from the top of the truck, not a socket through the fender well. Both the bolt and exhaust stud were very easy to remove.
    4. If you are just changing the oil line, you do not need to drain the oil or antifreeze. When I removed the oil line only the smallest trickle of oil came out of the engine block.
    5. The oil line will require a bit of tugging to come lose. I pulled the line from the engine first, then pulled the line straight out of the turbo. Don’t be afraid to use some elbow grease.
    6. I ordered the OEM replacement oil line from Tasca Autoparts using the part number indicated on the TSB (FU7Z 9T516 A). They might tell you the part doesn’t fit your truck, but it is appears to be the correct part (it was a direct fit after all). I believe the stock part was updated after Ford recognized the issue and released the TSB.
I’ve driven the truck around the block and there appears to be no issues. I’ll give an update on a month or so. Thanks for the awesome tutorial.

@@AaronHinesAuto When you say "awhile," how many total hours did you invest in the actual work, not including the on the fly explinations?
Basically, I'm a heavy equipment tech, and swapping a turbo on say, a John Deere 624G took me less than a day, but my 2.7 L F150 obviously has a lot more stuff in the way. If this took longer than a 10 hour day to replace, I might be looking at paying someone to do it instead of doing it myself for just the cost of parts.

I’m curious, I recently bought a new turbo from rotomaster and the instructions stated to add some oil on the feed line and spin the propeller by hand to coat the bearing so when it starts for the first time it’s not running dry of oil. Secondly it also states after installation is complete to pull the fuel pump fuse out and crank the motor to build up oil pressure (without starting the motor) then to add the fuse back in and start it. Is this something worth doing or is this going the extra mile?

The south doesn’t eat vehicles like the north. It helps that it never had a leak or anything too. My 2015 with 135k looks like it just came off the showroom under the hood. With the tiny oil filter on the turbos you think the oil filler line should be changed out more often to prevent damage to the turbo?

    • @Cape-bp2qj

nah id say whenever you replace the turbo swap the line with the filter on it. shouldnt have that much build up if you changing engine oil and filter at a decent interval. if there constant build up on it you have bigger issues

    Great Video!!!!! quick question.....
I have a 2016 f150 2.7 Eco-boost that is blowing white and a little blue smoke out the tailpipe on cold start, I have been reading that it has something to do with the oil bypass tube, can this be replaced on its own or would the whole turbo need to be replaced?
Also , how long would changing the Turbo take?
    Thanks......

I'm having a similar issue. There's a technical bulletin from ford saying that the left hand oil feed tube is leaking oil on a cold soak causing for excessive smoke on start up. Took it to ford and they confirmed the issue but wanted to charge 800 for it. They said all you need is to have that line replaced. I have a powertrain warranty. Part is not covered under their warranty

Something missed: precharging the turbo with oil using a hypo syringe , disconnecting fuel supply, and cranking the engine ( NOT STARTING ) to pressurize the oil supply to the turbo.

    • @bobroberts2371
      @bobroberts2371 3 роки тому +2

Well, why don't you hire a lawyer and sue? There are a few there are a few things that you need to understand.
      1) The waste gate needs to be adjusted after replacement and there isn't a reliable way do to this in the field. Sure you can drive around and look at pressure readings , adjust then drive around again however this isn't going to happen at a dealer level or high end independent shop.
      2) The vid maker said the oil feed line has been updated. He didn't show the old oil line but I'm betting the cone filter was added as an upgrade and the original line could not accept a filter.
You have 2 choices, learn how the world works or continue to struggle for the rest of your life blaming others.
