Your instability is due to the battery placement being mostly rearward. It should be redistributed to be closer to the center of gravity for greater stability
Yes. I have a pushbike with a cantilevered basket mounted on the rear rack. When this is full of groceries or whatever the front wheel becomes unstable. Dangerous - too much weight in the wrong place.
His stability issue is solved by NOT GOING THAT FAST. The stability is directly related to survive-ability. There is no question about stopping. It's gunna happen in a planned or unplanned way... but at 70km/h. 🤯 The motor is always gear engaged to wheel, unless it falls off. I seriously question the design integrity of that motor mount, the welds, and it's ability to resist torque forces, especially doing the death wobbles. But, what a sight to behold... dragging the motor along by the cables... at even 40km/h let alone 70 😆 Yeah, mass distribution... having a lower CG would always help more so than forward aft location. Moving the battery box so it isn't rubbing on the driven wheel... would be a good idea.
I am looking at building a three wheeled version of this electric powered bike for around the neighborhood cruising. I found the video quite inspiring and appreciate you posting it. Keep up the good work. It is inventors and innovators that keep out world turning!
Not gonna lie i thought this was a fake video, but when i did my research i found out that alternators, in fact, can be used as motors, Great work, i'm gonna do this when i get one on my hands
motors can be used as alternators and vice versa, but there is some problems related to it. That's whe some guys decided to make a dedicated motor for wheels

Making it gear driven is absolutely wild. If I were you I'd space the alternator back and put on a toothed belt to drive it. This was an awesome build!
The build is interesting, but I don't see how this is a 10,000 W alternator (per the video title). For one, you have a 200A board controlling it (which is roughly 12V x 200A = 2,400W). And from what I see, that is a 150 or even 100A alternator, which is 1800 to 1200W. Even with modifications which will bring the power lower still, it is a nice build, but I think you are off by a factor of about 10x.
You’re right- it’s not 10kw. Probably an 80 to 120 amp alternator, which typically outputs 14 volts more or less. So optimistically, a 1500 watt. Maybe he just put an extra zero on and meant 1000 watt? Or clickbait algorithm demanded exaggeration!
it is a 200a WATERCOOLED controller, that he didn't watercool. this bike runs at an estimated 40-60 amps from what i can see, he is either trolling or just doesn't care if his numbers are correct. the bike is great, but the stupid numbers are infuriating because now if someone makes a 3000w ebike with a 4000w capable battery on it, they will look like a chump to people who don't know what they are looking at. THIS IS CANCER.

Well done for your brilliant effort. May I suggest a couple of things. I would look at mounting the alternator by the pedal area and using a belt drive or similar to the rear wheel therefore giving you a more centralised mass. Following on from that, the battery pack would be much better slung under the main frame spar and would help with stability for your bike and reduce the speed wobbles experienced. Your efforts are nothing short of inspiring and you guys should be very proud of yourselves, just centralize and lower your overall mass for a much better handling bike. Front forks would also be worth changing to damped forks instead of rigid. Subbed, and sending you best wishes.

I managed to get a much more usable result with my e-bike conversion. It will comfortably ride at 80 kmh+ without any wobbles. The only downside is the motor will overheat within a few minutes at that kind of power level. I mostly use it up to 60 kmh and it will beat cars at the lights easily.

Modify the sterring stem ,add caster. Adjust rake and trail angle. For stability Or build a new frame. Keep the position of battery more towards front wheel for more cog
Correct on the battery placement. That's why when I bought my conversion kit for my bike with the hub motor, I bought a battery that I could mount in the middle of the bike to offset the 25lbs of the motor in the rear. Putting the heavy battery in the back would stress the frame to much when making sharper turns. When I make turns now it feels normal other than the extra weight on the bike but it's balanced well. I read that others noticed problems with to much weight in the rear.
It is the weight of the alternator on one side of the axle that makes you ride. It would be necessary to put an object of volume and equivalent weight on the other side so that it could roll normally. It will even be much more stable than before!
Awesome 😎 i think the wobbling you mentioned is due to improper weight distribution. The alternator and the battery is on the rear wheel. Also, the rider sits closer to the rear than front. You should aim for a weight distribution of 50% for each wheel.
The problem is with the structural integrity of this bike. The power to body ratio does not match. This bike has a threshold speed limit above which it started to experience the wobble of death. Happens with the conventional motorbikes too.
@@TheEngrAsad Could be the centrifugal force on the spoked wheel at high speed pulling it out of shape. That's what causes speed wobbles in motorcycles

Love it, i also can see that the bike test was loved as well, great project and great potential for grander projects. But the key lesson here is the amount of upscaling reclaiming and repurposing that has gone into the project so far.

when possibilities become probabilities, you are watching the right channels. this is a different type of moto-bicycle than I'm used to - most people build them like a motorcycle (Like the ones I ride)

I bet the looped small wire you used to connect the cells in the battery get pretty hot under 30+ amps of continuous load, unless you have multiple sets of cells in parallel. Nice build!

You must always use lubricant when drilling through metal, steel, aluminum, iron and stainless, as well as drilling within the proper speed and feed ranges
@@jodyguilbeaux8225 Speed and feed and tool type are going to be more important than coolant. A nice drill can do hundreds of holes without coolant, but if the speeds and feeds are wrong it might not even get 1.
As a safety measure, your car speedometer probably shows your speed higher than it actually is (in some places the speedometer is allowed to show a speed up to 10% higher than the actual speed, but is not allowed to show a slower speed). Your phone GPS speed is probably more accurate.
The speedometer are quite accurate if calibrated properly, they are mechanical. Porshe instruments are so accurate you can determine your speed from the rpm guage.
I work with sspeedometers professionally. The car Speedo is fast, the GPS speedo of your phone is accurate, provided you have been travelling at a steady speed in a straight line for 30 seconds or more. Car Speedos are required by law to never read slow, so the manufacturers of cars typically make them read 7 to 10 percent fast, which gives a safety margin that allows for changes in brands of tyres and tyre wear. For future tests, trust your GPS speedometer on the phone. Just give it 30 seconds at a steady speed to settle out any GPS averaging requirements. 🙂
@@michaelbrownlee9497 RPM gauges are more accurate than speedometers. Historically, manufacturers have designed speedometers to show about 5% higher than people actually are driving. This is so they think they are going faster than they actually are, since everyone drives above the posted speed limits. This has changed with modern vehicles, since they are now tied in to GPS locators with navigation systems. Now they need to show true speeds.

@@SparkyRF Alternators regularly run 120-160 amps in everyday bullshitty cars so if its 160 amps at 12 volts its almost two thousand watts. Even at 120 you're still almost producing 1500 watts of power. This could be a high amperage unit tho, if you spend like a few hundred dollars you can get a 300 amp alternator. These guys have 12 million views on one video im sure they can afford high amp alternators.

Hi, 7 years ago I was working for a small company that was selling electric bicycles. We converted normal 26´´ mountain bicycle into a e-bike. 1000 W motor was able to ride it at constant 45km/h. Please get a bicycle with much bigger rims and than try it again.I think you will be able to go 100 km/h without any problem.
100 km on a bicycle? That would scare the hell out of me! However I once drove my Mother's old 1964 Pontiac at 193 km/hr (120 miles per hour), so maybe I would be crazy enough to drive a bike at 100 km/hr.
I've been itching to tackle a "e-bike" project using a old Razor pedal powered "Big Wheel" style trike to make what other videos call a Drift Trike. I've watched dozens of other videos but only this one of yours and Still you've given me more USEFUL ideas than the others. Awesome, Thank You! I've subscribed and I plan to check out your other videos while I finish gathering everything I need. I promise I'll document the progress as best I can but with a basically non-existent budget, it'll be a while before I have anything to show. 👍🏻
@old cars trashed bms has overdischarge protection feature, so not a surprise if bms limits the full potential of the battery. In this video, they used Li-Po instead of Li-Ion which can go puffy then explode if it's overdischarged.
You should put a small water reservoir heatsink for a cpu on the speed controller and let the thermal differential cycle the small amount of fluid, and it would get rid of the air gap inside the controller and allow more heat transfer to the heatsink you added

Great idea and execution! If I had to critique one thing it would be to make sure when welding to get one consistent bead whenever possible for the most strength. What I and any other professional welder does is tack the ends of the work in place, remove slag, then run one consistent bead along the joint. I understand it's not always possible to get one consistent bead but it really does make a huge difference. Other than that small note I think you killed it. I truly am inspired. What a cool way to repurpose an alternator. I love that you make as much as you can yourself. Like using all those power cells in parallel. Really cool stuff!
the numbers are all wrong. it does what you can see it doing, but the numbers are all wrong. the video claims 10000 watts, he is using two batteries that are capable of 1500 watts each. this makes people who do projects and give real numbers look bad. this is not good.
@@kght222 I honestly hadnt even thought about it/realized their numbers were inflated . I know enough about batteries from building amps and guitar pedals and being an e cigarette user to have realized it but for some reason I didnt. Good eye! Edit: I'm not going to rewatch it but I thought in the video they were using many cells to make their packs then a bank. It's likely why I just assumed they were being honest. But with the seriously inflated battery/cell ratings perpetuated by the companys that sell Sony, Panasonic etc. cells for all we know they are going by what the seller claimed the batteries wattage/mah's were rather than testing the cells themselves which for most things cant simply be done with a MM accurately anyways. But the accurate tolerances for all the major cells are readily available online and if they are smart enough to make this video then we have to assume they likely did know the real tolerances.

Hey Guys ! Nice work so far... I´m a Bike Mechanic and so i got some ideas for you to think about.... Try to mount the Alternator in front of your "Pedals" that would give you more stability and maybe adds a little more stiffness to the Bike Frame. Maybe u also can mount the Batteries to the top tube of the frame. In the End maybe you get a suspension fork fittet. Then try that Highspeed run again =)
Yeah , I am thinking about converting a gas pedal moped to electric pedal moped. I'm def sure it'll carry the weight of batteries ,front ,back or rear. Also , have no problem with the speed (wobbles). If so , minor. Hope this idea helps anyone. To all us diy's , good luck and many happy builds. Keep smiling. it will make your day that much easier. Ten kilowatts? How did you measure that? The motors that put out that kind of power are usually liquid cooled to prevent the magnets exceeding the curie point.
Pure genius! You probably already have the wheel shimmy problem worked out, but I think it has to do with the amount of trail in the steering. You may need to add a small amount of wheel trail, in order to deal with the added speed involved. All the best!

I think they used 120 Volts AC InStead of 12 Volt DC When Converting the Math , I Noticed this Right Away and Though Common , No Way!

But thats way too much power for a little bike 10000 watts is 15hp. Thats got to run around 90mph

Modify the sterring stem ,add caster. Adjust rake and trail angle. For stability

Correct on the battery placement. That's why when I bought my conversion kit for my bike with the hub motor, I bought a battery that I could mount in the middle of the bike to offset the 25lbs of the motor in the rear.
Putting the heavy battery in the back would stress the frame to much when making sharper turns. When I make turns now it feels normal other than the extra weight on the bike but it's balanced well. I read that others noticed problems with to much weight in the rear.
Get some vice grip clamps for your drill press! I use them all day at work
Or some peg holes in the table, so they could put a hard stop behind the sprocket they are drilling.

It is the weight of the alternator on one side of the axle that makes you ride. It would be necessary to put an object of volume and equivalent weight on the other side so that it could roll normally. It will even be much more stable than before!

Awesome 😎 i think the wobbling you mentioned is due to improper weight distribution. The alternator and the battery is on the rear wheel. Also, the rider sits closer to the rear than front. You should aim for a weight distribution of 50% for each wheel.
The problem is with the structural integrity of this bike. The power to body ratio does not match. This bike has a threshold speed limit above which it started to experience the wobble of death. Happens with the conventional motorbikes too.
@@TheEngrAsad Could be the centrifugal force on the spoked wheel at high speed pulling it out of shape. That's what causes speed wobbles in motorcycles

Love it, i also can see that the bike test was loved as well, great project and great potential for grander projects. But the key lesson here is the amount of upscaling reclaiming and repurposing that has gone into the project so far.
In theory I dunno I've always wondered this, couldn't you add a 2nd alternator to it that recharges the the battery that powers the first one.
You guys really know your stuff that bike is amazing with that set up and the range it has if great. Will definitely watch how you converted the Alternator as I came across this by chance.👍

I bet the looped small wire you used to connect the cells in the battery get pretty hot under 30+ amps of continuous load, unless you have multiple sets of cells in parallel. Nice build!

You must always use lubricant when drilling through metal, steel, aluminum, iron and stainless, as well as drilling within the proper speed and feed ranges
right, that is basic knowledge that most machinist know.
@@jodyguilbeaux8225 Speed and feed and tool type are going to be more important than coolant. A nice drill can do hundreds of holes without coolant, but if the speeds and feeds are wrong it might not even get 1.

As a safety measure, your car speedometer probably shows your speed higher than it actually is (in some places the speedometer is allowed to show a speed up to 10% higher than the actual speed, but is not allowed to show a slower speed).
Your phone GPS speed is probably more accurate.

The speedometer are quite accurate if calibrated properly, they are mechanical.
Porshe instruments are so accurate you can determine your speed from the rpm guage.

The car Speedo is fast, the GPS speedo of your phone is accurate, provided you have been travelling at a steady speed in a straight line for 30 seconds or more.
Car Speedos are required by law to never read slow, so the manufacturers of cars typically make them read 7 to 10 percent fast, which gives a safety margin that allows for changes in brands of tyres and tyre wear.
For future tests, trust your GPS speedometer on the phone. Just give it 30 seconds at a steady speed to settle out any GPS averaging requirements. 🙂
@@michaelbrownlee9497 RPM gauges are more accurate than speedometers. Historically, manufacturers have designed speedometers to show about 5% higher than people actually are driving. This is so they think they are going faster than they actually are, since everyone drives above the posted speed limits.
This has changed with modern vehicles, since they are now tied in to GPS locators with navigation systems. Now they need to show true speeds.

@@SparkyRF Alternators regularly run 120-160 amps in everyday bullshitty cars so if its 160 amps at 12 volts its almost two thousand watts. Even at 120 you're still almost producing 1500 watts of power. This could be a high amperage unit tho, if you spend like a few hundred dollars you can get a 300 amp alternator. These guys have 12 million views on one video im sure they can afford high amp alternators.

Hi, 7 years ago I was working for a small company that was selling electric bicycles. We converted normal 26´´ mountain bicycle into a e-bike. 1000 W motor was able to ride it at constant 45km/h. Please get a bicycle with much bigger rims and than try it again.I think you will be able to go 100 km/h without any problem.
I think above 40km/h you're looking at "might as well get a motorbike" speeds.
100 km on a bicycle? That would scare the hell out of me! However I once drove my Mother's old 1964 Pontiac at 193 km/hr (120 miles per hour), so maybe I would be crazy enough to drive a bike at 100 km/hr.

I've been itching to tackle a "e-bike" project using a old Razor pedal powered "Big Wheel" style trike to make what other videos call a Drift Trike. I've watched dozens of other videos but only this one of yours and Still you've given me more USEFUL ideas than the others. Awesome, Thank You! engaging Li-Po battery pack without BMS to run a motor is dangerous dude. Li-Po is very flammable when its leaking

@old cars trashed bms has overdischarge protection feature, so not a surprise if bms limits the full potential of the battery.
In this video, they used Li-Po instead of Li-Ion which can go puffy then explode if it's overdischarged.

You should put a small water reservoir heatsink for a cpu on the speed controller and let the thermal differential cycle the small amount of fluid, and it would get rid of the air gap inside the controller and allow more heat transfer to the heatsink you added

Great idea and execution! If I had to critique one thing it would be to make sure when welding to get one consistent bead whenever possible for the most strength. What I and any other professional welder does is tack the ends of the work in place, remove slag, then run one consistent bead along the joint. I understand it's not always possible to get one consistent bead but it really does make a huge difference. Other than that small note I think you killed it. I truly am inspired. What a cool way to repurpose an alternator. I love that you make as much as you can yourself. Like using all those power cells in parallel. Really cool stuff!
the numbers are all wrong. it does what you can see it doing, but the numbers are all wrong.
the video claims 10000 watts, he is using two batteries that are capable of 1500 watts each. this makes people who do projects and give real numbers look bad. this is not good.
@@kght222 I honestly hadnt even thought about it/realized their numbers were inflated . I know enough about batteries from building amps and guitar pedals and being an e cigarette user to have realized it but for some reason I didnt. Good eye!
Edit: I'm not going to rewatch it but I thought in the video they were using many cells to make their packs then a bank. It's likely why I just assumed they were being honest. But with the seriously inflated battery/cell ratings perpetuated by the companys that sell Sony, Panasonic etc. cells for all we know they are going by what the seller claimed the batteries wattage/mah's were rather than testing the cells themselves which for most things cant simply be done with a MM accurately anyways. But the accurate tolerances for all the major cells are readily available online and if they are smart enough to make this video then we have to assume they likely did know the real tolerances.

Hey Guys ! Nice work so far... I´m a Bike Mechanic and so i got some ideas for you to think about.... Try to mount the Alternator in front of your "Pedals" that would give you more stability and maybe adds a little more stiffness to the Bike Frame. Maybe u also can mount the Batteries to the top tube of the frame. In the End maybe you get a suspension fork fittet. Then try that Highspeed run again =)
Yeah , I am thinking about converting a gas pedal moped to electric pedal moped. I'm def sure it'll carry the weight of batteries ,front ,back or rear. Also , have no problem with the speed (wobbles). If so , minor. Hope this idea helps anyone. To all us diy's , good luck and many happy builds. Keep smiling. it will make your day that much easier. Ten kilowatts? How did you measure that? The motors that put out that kind of power are usually liquid cooled to prevent the magnets exceeding the curie point.

Pure genius! You probably already have the wheel shimmy problem worked out, but I think it has to do with the amount of trail in the steering. You may need to add a small amount of wheel trail, in order to deal with the added speed involved. All the best!
