Of course there is trial and error + hundreds of hours work involved in doing this DIY, but when it’s a hobby, all that matters is the enjoyment (and cost of parts). This video has given me a ton of inspiration and ideas. One of which being using the crank as the speed controller, either by using an encoder directly, or passing the crank through a back sprung differential with a potentiometer mounted to the differential bell. The latter would allow for you to use another pot on the handlebars to set the max amount of electric assist, and your additional pedal pressure while cycling normally would propel you forward electrically. This way you would still have to cycle for the sake of working out, but you would get additional range and some help up the steepest hills. This could motivate some to get on the bicycle seat more often.

I wish I saw this video when you made it, I can solve the first two-motor problem easily for you... In conveyor systems, when we need to add an extra motor, we do it in a similar way to how you’re done, it, but, the second pulley is made slightly larger than the first, to it “over-drives” creating tension in the belt between the two motors. This also has the benefit of allowing the first motor to inout more power into the system than it normally could due to the higher t2 tension. What you would be better off doing is: put the second motor in the place of the pulley between the two motors so it’s running on back side of the belt, and make it’s pulley around 1.5-2% larger than the pitch diameter pf the primary drive pulley. The secondary motor will obviously have to run in reverse, but you will get massive benefits over your other arrangement.

Agree with this comment completely. Please say that these are private roads otherwise what you are doing is illegal. Also, as this is a new kit, a throttle is also illegal. I do like how you are designing new ways for an electric bike but maybe look at being more efficient by powering the crank rather than just the rear wheel. As a non-engineer fostering my mad skillz I'd like to build my old 1986 Raleigh Grand Prix to buzz around on and borrow from this awesome design. To reduce weight, I will try capacitors instead of batteries, they work great in cars. Bend the pedal stems outward an equal distance so the left side pedal will clear the hub on the next design unless I find another design that allows pedal play with no leg interference. A bicycle light generator powered off the rear flywheel or tire could slowly recharge the capacitors. I know nothing about regen braking so I will yield to a greater design because mine will look like a heap till I fashion the right parts or buy them.
@@thecube5861 Yes, but unless you are "name greedy corporation like apple" your design should have longest possible utility life, of course balanced between quality, what it is designed to do, price and such factors.
A handy conversion to supplement the magical "10" number is that peak torque approximately = current * 9.5 / KV . If you're comparing motor and pulley combos at the same current, you will get the relationship Tom found.
Hi Tom, Really nice video recab of your learning curve during the build of your own ideal electric bike. I can imagine your feeling of gratification when you had reached your desired result after 3 years of work. Pushing your own knowledge to get the most out of every mechanical and electrical detail for optimal results. People who even take time to create a video about there years of work and contribute by sharing their knowledge deserve at least a thumb up. Again, impressive piece of engineering Tom, thanks for sharing. Not one second of my time was wasted watching this video.
Yep. This is why I watch this video for the 11th time. There is no e-bike without some drawbacks I don't want. I'm investigating building a bike that can take cargo and possibly be charged with solar, that can be locked in a way that no one would like to put the effort into stealing it.

I do like how you are designing new ways for an electric bike but maybe look at being more efficient by powering the crank rather than just the rear wheel. There are kits out there for a crank with a freewheel in them so when powering the crank, the crank arms wont spin.
The requirements in the UK are referred to as EAPC

I'd say the odds of him getting a fine are very very slim. Everyone who buys e-bikes removes the speed limit anyway
@@robmac3702 Those were most certainly not private roads. He should stop, especially now that he's put evidence online.

Whilst that is very true, as a working engineer, one of the main prorities of a task is to design something which is in the confines of your local laws. After that, design using best practices such as British Standards and ISO's. There are many people hot rodding ebikes on youtube but one of the main reasons many people watch Stanton is for the informative and logical approach. By not putting in a disclaimer in the video he is putting himself at risk of prosecution which isn't very logical and may stop the great video output that we can expect to watch from him.
Oh God what a technical mind and work you do. Great job indeed. There is no comparison event to understand your projects. I am feeling empty of my upper portion.😂😂
12:48 : Let's call that Stanton's Equation
Nice
@@dharmayudha3401 is it more like theorem or law?
Stanton equation would be a good option.
yes stantons law
works only for 26-inch-wheels...
What a great transition at 8:00 :D
Awesome video as always!
xD
I always wondered a thing that i've seen in all kind of DIY E-bike, why don't you connect the motor to the chainring mayby by adding a chainring to make it fit because there is also the chain it self as a problem, but still, wouldn't it be better to do it so to also have gears?
I love Vedder’s speed controller project, it was a big inspiration for my university capstone project. Thanks for sharing your whole process, failures and successes alike :)
The guy deserves every view
It sounds like R2D2 screaming. This is amazing
8:04 that transition was smoother than Luther Vandross
This is amazing. You're really passionate and I wish you find sponsor to start up your own e-bike company.
What they've done isn't legal on UK roads. Fine for a UA-cam video, not commercially viable.
Its because of too much power/speed or?
it's very rarely my "DAD" will be glued to any video i show him on You-Tube... i recently bought an E-bike! and it was absolutely the best money iv ever spent in my life."EVER" I'd recommend one to anyone. but my god... 'TOM MY MAN" THAT WAS AWESOME & LORD COULD IT MOVE.. : ) when i think of my 30kg bike with its 20inch wheels running out of battery, & im still 5 miles away from home.. it make's me want one like that. IV SAW LOAD'S OF 'MAKE YOUR OWN EBIKE VIDEOS BUT... THIS WIN'S : ) HANDS DOWN.... PURE CLASS! : )
Tom, you're really gifted. You'll do well in life! Keep it up pall!
This guy is setting new goals for DIY projects!
Motors shouldn’t be for cars, but are perfect for smaller uses like this. Absolutely perfect.
9:07 thoes are finnish batteries. And "LiitoKala" means flying/gliding fish. Juu olen suomalainen.
firma on kyllä netin mukaan kiinasta...
This would be a perfect diy or buy
"Great Scott!" refference?
This is the definition of "GOD level" innovation 😁👍
In my opinion your the tony stark of electric bikes. GOOD JOB! thanks for the brief tuts and inclusive data on mount designs and formulas.
So what was the total cost of JUST THE parts on the new bike (excluding the frame)? Could you add links or names please? Awesome video.
Hey Tom,
I would love to build an ebike like this! Could you make the files public?
Thingiverse?
Sensational, thanks for sharing - clearly a lot of time spent improving, and we all get to benefit from your past issues!
Thanks for this research, your work and your videos
Thank you for sharing all the details, including failures - so instructive!
Gonna try n build one from a scarifying machine motor cos i got one laying in my shed. Gonna keep it as cheap as possible. Wish me luck!
Don't die!
Nono, you dont understand: that's the end goal!
@@thecube5861 Yes, but unless you are "name greedy corporation like apple" your design should have longest possible utility life, of course balanced between quality, what it is designed to do, price and such factors.
Toure a genius ! You’re … incredible and I’m so jealous of all of that, how inventive, how smart you are ! I love it !
How about using an optical sensor from a mouse as a ground speed sensor and revisiting your abs video. Great vid!
They need to be pretty much on the ground to work. Your mouse won't work after you raise it about 2-3 cm
@@tshepp89 you can put a lense in front of the sensor to adjust the optical plane
Damn, you’ve put in a lot of revisions!
Sometimes "engineering" is admitting that that thing you did was stupid and fixing it.
Over and over and over again.
Failure is always an option.
It's not about having an electric bike, then you just buy one, its about knowing how everything works and creating your own optimal design.
Really good! I admire your tenacious, constantly changing/improving/refining your design - true development engineering. I don't know why you don't go on Dragons Den, patent all this, or work collaboratively with Dyson!
it's called Bafang Motor. Or from a series of BBSHD Mid Drives. He's trying to re invent the wheel. Motor at frame, small gear. motor on wheel, big gear.
You could probably use one of those T-belt conversion kits for gas bicycles for a belt drive system. I'm gonna try using one
The beginning sounds like R2-D2 in a fly-by
I would work on back breaks lol imagine him hitting the front breaks. “Woooshhh”
Front brakes do almost all the stopping on a bike, whilst stopping the weight is transferred forward
You just made a 15 minute video about how you built and rode multiple unregistered motor vehicles.
14:00 is such a good feeling
Makes you realise how good legs are. Like multi-tools.
you have serious skills.. this is maybe the best electric bike on UA-cam
“What’s powering your bike?” “Two cans of beans. It’s gas powered.”
Hey Tom, absolutly great video! That could be a start up for selling pre-installed parts ;-). Hopefully more to come, Greetings, Marc
Hope you never fall off at those speeds, great work.
You sir, make me want to be an engineer.
12:42 ladies an gentleman, here we have new beautiful "Stanton equation"
