Closed Terrarium but its thicc - step by step

- It' time to world build. Today, we'll be making a closed terrarium, which can potentially last decades if in perfect balance. Sealed terrariums will never be as reliably successful as traditional, open terrariums, but we can give it our best shot. In between the happenings with my reptiles, I've been taking on tons of other projects, including building a group of closed setups like this that will hopefully live longer than me. Enjoy the inheritance future kids! This sealed oxygen may one day be in high demand.
These conditions pose some interesting challenges, namely the high humidity and smaller size. Because of that, we will need to very selective about what plants we include. A more detailed list is below. Besides that, mold is also a risk. To prevent it, all organics will be baked, and we will be watering sparingly. Including mold eating microfauna like springtails will also help. As I build more projects, we will be working towards more rare plant choices and more complex ecosystems. There is a never a guarantee of success, but it's what makes these projects so fun.
see you soon. PEACE

My Current favorite plants to add are Pennyworts, Liverworts, Pilea, and moss. Over the course of months, I've not noticed they do the best
Don’t forget when you do plant trimmings smell the terrium😂 you can tell if your terrium is healthy by smell!
Great timing! I just go into terrarium building, and it’s been overwhelming
hope you've got it all straightened out. any questions lmk
I never thought about cutting the mesh around the bottom, that is very smart
The fact that 3 days ago I was trying to find how to do these and then 2 days ago I found your channel, AND THEN you post this, low key scares me-
I enjoyed this video quite a bit! I haven't been interested in closed terrariums until five minutes ago, when I watched this video.
I had noticed you hadn't posted any videos these last few days, so you were working on this huh? Looks great!
Haha that’s right. I’ve got lots in the pipe but so many subbed from my terrarium vid, I figured this was a solid next upload
I was planning on making a terrarium with some of my friends this weekend, thanks!
Good luck! its gunna be great
Absolutely love these videos, great to see the quality of video increasing as well
I appreciate you picking up on it haha. Ive been tinkering with my new camera and methods for audio. support means a ton, thank you
i found springtails in my backyard on rocks and in the dirt under logs. theyre pretty easy to find and collect. I tried those traps you see on youtube but they didnt work. it worked best for me to get a cup with some water and charcoal and my wifes old makeup brush, lift up logs and rocks, and brush the springtails in
Wow I can’t wait to do this thx
Love this guy
You’re awesome thank you so much
This was the best tutorial!! 😄 🌱☺️
I have one in a bottle just like that. I love it
@A rat that has been left in the freezer only a few weeks🤣. It had a mold outbreak a while ago, so I had to open it so that the micro fauna could breathe while they took care of the mold
@A rat that has been left in the freezer Yes! I have springtails, isopods, millipedes and some tiny snails as well. My family used to have a compost heap in the corner of our garden. It was very bioactive, so those critters were easy to find for me.
@A rat that has been left in the freezer for this specific terrerium, I didn't. But I have made some with dirt from outside before.
Love your videos! I totally followed along and made my own.
Here’s the bummer part… I remember from my aquarium days that charcoal’s effectiveness is pretty short lived. A soil scientist youtuber lady I watch also mentioned it’s true when added as plant/soil amendment. This may allow you to actually outlive your terrarium. I’m sorry.
Sooo beautiful ✨️
Hey thank you

The donkey tail!
Great video, very fun to watch. I’ve heard that soaking moss for 24 hours can help drown any organisms hitchhiking on it, just make sure to use dechlorinated water, as moss is sensitive. Also, If you haven’t already, isopods can help clear up rotting organic matter as well.
@A rat that has been left in the freezer Dwarf isopods should work for such sized containers.
Depending on how it settles in, I may start adding some more microfauna then maybe a dog
@@leafystreet Great Danes would probably be the most appropriate sized canine for such a terrarium.
@@rinaturalist perfect. My dad actually just got one. My mom said it was ok to get a dog, but nothing too big. True story
@@leafystreet I’ve heard they’re great at preventing mold growth, and also the plant growth as well. Would love to see a tutorial on that eventually

Ok if i don't put in a gravel like layer will it be sufficient, and also i went with a plastic jar but does it work as well as glass jars?
Can I just burn wood and use that instead of horticulture charcoal?
is that whole pets market you got the aquarium gravel at? i work there lmao
At least I know now that we humans can leave something behind
Can I put a closed Terrarium underneath my grow light rack?
Yea definitely
@@leafystreet nice
i'm surprised there's no "POLSKA GUROM" or something
I came here for the credit card number and to figure out what I need for a terrarium
are you from poland
Do spring tails not breathe
they do, and can survive on the oxygen produced by the plants
@@leafystreet oh wow, that is super cool, I never even thought of that, I was just so confused because it was totally sealed, thanks for answering!
Buy me some Polish mustard please please 🥲
