  • It' time to world build. Today, we'll be making a closed terrarium, which can potentially last decades if in perfect balance. Sealed terrariums will never be as reliably successful as traditional, open terrariums, but we can give it our best shot. In between the happenings with my reptiles, I've been taking on tons of other projects, including building a group of closed setups like this that will hopefully live longer than me. Enjoy the inheritance future kids! This sealed oxygen may one day be in high demand.
These conditions pose some interesting challenges, namely the high humidity and smaller size. Because of that, we will need to very selective about what plants we include. A more detailed list is below. Besides that, mold is also a risk. To prevent it, all organics will be baked, and we will be watering sparingly. Including mold eating microfauna like springtails will also help. As I build more projects, we will be working towards more rare plant choices and more complex ecosystems. There is a never a guarantee of success, but it's what makes these projects so fun.
    see you soon. PEACE

My Current favorite plants to add are Pennyworts, Liverworts, Pilea, and moss. Over the course of months, I've not noticed they do the best

i found springtails in my backyard on rocks and in the dirt under logs. theyre pretty easy to find and collect. I tried those traps you see on youtube but they didnt work. it worked best for me to get a cup with some water and charcoal and my wifes old makeup brush, lift up logs and rocks, and brush the springtails in

@A rat that has been left in the freezer only a few weeks🤣. It had a mold outbreak a while ago, so I had to open it so that the micro fauna could breathe while they took care of the mold

@A rat that has been left in the freezer Yes! I have springtails, isopods, millipedes and some tiny snails as well. My family used to have a compost heap in the corner of our garden. It was very bioactive, so those critters were easy to find for me.

Love your videos! I totally followed along and made my own.
Here’s the bummer part… I remember from my aquarium days that charcoal’s effectiveness is pretty short lived. A soil scientist youtuber lady I watch also mentioned it’s true when added as plant/soil amendment. This may allow you to actually outlive your terrarium. I’m sorry.

Great video, very fun to watch. I’ve heard that soaking moss for 24 hours can help drown any organisms hitchhiking on it, just make sure to use dechlorinated water, as moss is sensitive. Also, If you haven’t already, isopods can help clear up rotting organic matter as well.

@A rat that has been left in the freezer Dwarf isopods should work for such sized containers.
