- I'm heartbroken. Fuji has passed very suddenly, and the events that lead there deserve a full story time. Things can be perfect and still go wrong, and it's a hard lesson on the realities of reptile keeping and how crucial it is to have a vet close by to help with situations like this. Sadly this time it didn't work out. Fuji and Toes are Gargoyle geckos

Unfortunetly, even with vets with decades of experience it can be a huge tossup with animals and anesthesia. The smaller the animal the more risk of sudden death even if everything is done right. So sorry that happened to you.

All three of my gargoyle geckos passed away for unknown reasons. I've kept reptiles for 17 years, did heaps of research on the species, got their enclosures approved by breeders. They were all from different places. But even the reputable breeder I got the 3rd from never figured out how they died. I gave up on gargoyle geckos after that..
Deepest condolences. The worst part of having animals is when they go, but you gave him an incredible life. He'll always live on in your memories

I’m a vet assistant… unfortunately putting such a small animal under does carry certain risks and it’s almost impossible to do super successful cpr on such a little creature. I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing my beardie was one of the hardest things that happened to me and it only gets better with time.

Ughhh...this video definitely had me tearing up! Wish I could give you a hug. I don't even consider my animals "pets". They are my family! My children. It hurts so bad to lose part of your family. I'm so sorry this happened to you and to Fuji.

Anaesthesia is so rough on smaller animals. Even puppies and kittens. It’s why a lot of people don’t get their rodents, rabbits, hedgehogs, etc spayed/neutered. I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is so hard :(

I know I’m just one of what will be hundreds commenting, but I am sending my condolences nonetheless. From a gecko owners perspective, you did everything correctly and I commend you for the high level of care and research you put into your animals. Your love for your animals shows in not only your own research, knowledge and the execution of those things, but also in your desire to educate others. I hope that you continue this journey to fulfilling your childhood dreams despite this!

Man, that’s super awful. I’m so sorry that happened to you and that poor precious little guy. It’s rare, but sometimes the anesthetic does kill the animal.
Yep. Even with humans there can be complications with anesthesia. It’s such a complex mix of medicines to put an animal or human under with so many outside factors determining the dosage that even the smallest error can be fatal. It’s so sad when that’s the thing that leads to death.😢
That’s what I was scared of happening to my dog when she had surgery a day ago. She is alive and well now but when she sleeps she is sometimes left breathless and jolts awake. Never happened before, she is only 8 months old. Does it have something to do with the anesthesia they gave her?
Yeah, this is how my brother's dog went. He went in for a surgery to patch up a skin wound on top of his head and never woke up.

My condolences. Complete stranger to your channel but a big exotics and veterinary nerd here. This was definitely a freak accident and not at all your fault.
For one, prolapses just happen. Sometimes they’re easy to fix like what your gecko’s breeder had happen, and sometimes they are life threatening ordeals and there’s not much you can do to prevent or predict it in breeding.
With the vet visit, unfortunately little guys of any species and anesthesia do not mix well. It’s very easy for it to go wrong like it did for you and takes a skilled anesthesiologist with experience in the species you’re bringing in for the least risk but it’s always there. Not only their size but the unique anatomy of reptiles that make it so difficult and risky.
Don’t beat yourself up about it too much, hope you get those eggs from Toes!
Dude I grew really attached to Fuji, always thinking “when I finally get a gargoyle myself I’ll be sure to get one with a personality like his”…

Im so sorry for your loss man… I remember the freeze I had to leave my house and leave all my fish, there was no power and a night later my parents said they all died. I was devistated and It was horrible. I’m so sorry you lost Fuji but his legacy (and maybe children) will live on.

Dear god the first video of yours I saw was just recently and it was the one with you weighing them both and pairing them up to mate. I liked your personality and the subjects of your videos and I watched a bunch right then. I just earlier saw the short about the toothbrush containers working and toes laying eggs and I’m now grasping just how big of a deal that is. Poor buddy, I’m sorry. Crazy how quickly things can turn upside down. 😢

@@leafystreet He is! I mean with Fuji as my basis of gecko perfection I had to at least choose a good looking one! (even if he does forgot to unlatch his tail from my finger before leaping XD) He is still a yearling, but let's pray you get some little red babies of your own soon!!!
As someone who's lost plenty of reptiles over the years, let me say that this is by far the hardest part of keeping exotic pets. Especially when it comes to breeding them, there's a lot that can go wrong very quickly. I had two little banded geckos living in a 40 gallon, one male one female. They got along fine for months, and had plenty of space and food. When breeding season came around though, the male got frisky, and the female retaliated. The poor male ended up with a broken spine and died a day before I could get him into the vet. This is one of the reasons I've decided that, while I love keeping reptiles, I probably won't be trying to breed any in the near future.
I'm so sorry for your loss, but know that you did everything you could to not only save him in his final moments, but provide him a happy and healthy life in the time he was with you.

The day this video came out I got a male gargoyle gecko that looks exactly like Fuji like it’s just a really really weird coincidence I didn’t even know this video existed at the time

I had a Florida kingsnake that had an abscess on his face and he had to be operated on. I was a mess but luckily he pulled through because I was told reptiles are not good with anaesthetics. I lost him 11 years later to cancer and I was devastated. I had him for 15 years and was so attached to him. He was the first (and best) snake I had. It hurts so much losing a beloved pet. I was in tears watching your video. I am so so sorry you and Fiji had to go through this.

@@somethingsomething404 Hemipene prolapses are not genetic. They usually aren't fatal, and this one wouldn't have been if Fuji had survived the anesthesia. Some causes can include impaction, excess strain, mating, improper sexing, or a lack of humidity. Usually it can be fixed by keeping the lizard in a sterile environment and using lubricants or certain solutions to make the hemipene easier to slip back in, and slowly pushing it back into the body. It's advised to always contact a vet for advice on how to fix it first. Unfortunately it seems like too much of the anesthetic was given to the lizard which caused his heart to stop.
Same thing happened to me w my turtle, its always the anesthetic, they really should lower the dosage, and sorry for your loss, its always hard to loose a pet
Really sorry to hear this bro. A few years back in 2018 I had a crested gecko who I had for about 8 years. He started having some health issues and I took him to the vet, they gave him a calcium shot or something… but anyway his little body didn’t react well to the shot and he basically died of shock the night we brought him home. I think the lesson to be learned at the end of the day, is often time these little animals are fragile and not designed for our certain forms of treatment.

A pet, I don't really consider. As a pet, more as a family number cause honestly. Having an animal is better than having family at sometimes. It is sad.

I had a similar issue happen to one of my rats.
No, I don’t breed rats. I noticed that one of my rats was quite congested and wasn’t really breathing properly. I left it for a week and by then I was pretty sure he had a respiratory infection, he wasn’t eating and lost almost 200grams (he was a juvenile so he’s only supposed to be around 300grams) I take him to the vet and it turns out he does have a respiratory infection but we have antibiotics for him, although due to his dramatic weight loss his peepee has come out and is swollen. They decided he should go under so they could put it back in. There is a risk with putting small animals under but I decided to go ahead with it. And… luckily he made it! He’s now doing better and has gained 30 grams in the past week! Luckily lemon is doing very well.
I lost a desert tortoise last year that i had for 15 years due to complications from compaction.
I live in a small town area and nobody has real experience with reptiles. The one "exotic" vet in my area i took him to really had no idea what they were doing.
I took him in SIX times and he died a horrible death.
It haunts me still. I still miss him, reptiles can be so complex and hard to treat.
It was DEVASTATING for me and i always think of what i could have done different. Its so important to learn all you can from these experiences so that its much less likely to be repeated and to keep learning and researching the animals under our care. Not only was my vet clueless, i had no idea about compaction either.

So sorry man. Believe it or not, messing with hemi penes can be worse than just leaving them alone, especially avoiding anesthesia if possible at all cost. It's unfortunate but most breeders and vets freak out and try to stitch and treat instead of just letting it heal naturally. In the wild these guys have to get it back in or it shrivels up and falls off (which is good). So anyway, sorry man but good luck with the baby!
A year later and we all still love and miss Fuji. Watching this it at least helps to know that there are a bunch of beautiful, happy and healthy little Fuji and Toes babies running around. You will always live on little man 💜.

Poor Fuji, I'm so sorry. I lost my gecko Maurice during surgery earlier in the month.. she went in to have her ovaries removed due to follicular stasis, unfortunately when they opened her up they found a tumour constricting part of her gut.. totally inoperable 😔 I had to make the decision not to wake her back up.

Oh man, this video made me cry. I cannot imagine how hard (and probably expensive) it was to lose him like that. Gargoyle geckos are so cool. They are one of my dream geckos for sure. I hope you got some fertile eggs at least out of this tragedy and can at least have a part of him in your life again. I'm going to go check your other videos to see if you got lucky. I sincerely hope you did! He was one of the most beautiful geckos I have ever seen, and his babies would be showstoppers for sure! Best of luck in the future with breeding endeavors. I have always wanted to breed exotic animals since childhood too (I'm 36 now.) I just picked up 3 mourning geckos and I cannot wait until they start laying. I've tried pairing my corn snakes with no luck, so I figure mourning geckos are fool proof as far as breeding goes lol!

Im no proffessional or experienced with exotic animals but i asked the petshop owner who knew when i bought my only *fruitbat* . Was happy and eatin well, he loved bananas (and peein upside down outta his cell) . And one day he was just. Y kno.
He had fresh water , had food , temp was good. Prolly some health sensitivity issue. I was very hurt for various reasons that day, walked far to a big empty redsand place and burried him in a plastic bag.
Dammit, I was on the verge of tears and then you had to say "he broke his penis and then died" and I couldn't not laugh at how it was worded.

Im sorry you lost your lil dude. As a person who works in veterinary surgery, anesthetic is really touchy on reptiles in general, nevermind tiny ones. Their metabolism and biology is so wildly different than a mammals, and there just isnt as much knowledge about various reptile species response to anesthetic, or even individual variation within a species, so its *always* much more risky, even for a relatively minor surgery like fixing a prolapsed hemipene.
Im sorry this happened. Losing a pet to anesthetic when a surgery was successful is the worst thing I can think of.
At least the little guy was able to fertilize some eggs, and his kids live on!

As awful as it was to loose your buddy under anesthetic.... this was probably the best way for him pass on, why?. He didn't die in agony.
Because of your quick thinking, you got him to see a doctor and got him the relief he needed, he passed on without pain and discomfort. If you hadn't of intervened he would have slowly and painfully died. You gave him the ability to escape the pain. He got to live a life loved by you and when in trouble, you came to his rescue. Despite his life coming to an end, you gave him so much more than you could ever know.. sending condolences from NZ ♡

My crested gecko died today. I went to feed him, and opened his tank and as I looked for him I saw him on the floor laying down upside down with his arms skinny his stomach looking as if he been starved for months and unresponsive I picked him up hoping he was sleeping he was not. He was dead I was crying my eyes out he turned 1 a few months ago it was a horrible sight. He looked completely skinny he had barely any meat in his bones his arms were stuck in same place and when I picked him up his head just bobbled. I don’t know what to do I have other pets but he was my favorite it’s hard to let go of your pet especially your most loved one that you have been there for the rest of your life.

I had a pet rat once that this happened to. She ended up getting a tumor, which is common. We sent her to surgery and it went great but she didnt wake up. im so sorry this happened.

Wait wait, you were trying to breed an animal with a kink and no toes? That's a lil sus
The no toes was likely caused by either stuck shed or if she was cohabbed with other geckos as a baby. That's not a genetic issue and won't be passed on. The wavy tail does not seem to cause her any pain or discomfort, or hinder her ability to do normal gecko things and live a good life, so even if the offspring get it, it won't affect them. If she were in the wild, she'd repopulate just like this and the babies would likely survive just fine.
My sand boa died recently and i’ve had him since i was a kid, such a horrible feeling to lose a pet. I’m sorry for your loss.

I actually started to tear up, I am so sorry this happened to Fuji. I'm new to watching your videos and I love how much you care for these beautiful babies. I wish I had more time and space, I would rescue some as well. We have tons of green anoles and blue tailed skinks out here and I try to watch out for them, move them to a nice plant to hide. I have an outdoor terrarium/planter with a cover for my plants and it is nice and humid in there, I let the lizards chill there and bring them bugs. thank you for sharing and doing all that you do!
I bought my 11 yo some kind of reptile I'm not sure but we invested so much into that little guy bc of this channel apparently we got one with some kind of mutation and it wasn't goin to live long we gave him the best life we could bc of u...so know he lives on thru all of us that you've touched in some kina way
