Using a premium pouring medium - Is it Liquitex pouring medium better than Glue-All and Floetrol?

  • Liquitex Pouring Medium has been out of my pouring budget for a long time. Because it is so expensive I have generally stayed with Glue-All or Floetrol.
    This week I got a 60% off coupon from Michael's so I splurged and bought a GALLON of Liquitex Pouring Medium for $40 ($99 - 60% Off). This ends up being about twice as expensive as Floetrol or Glue-All ($17 - $20 per gallon).

    I am really impressed with the pouring medium. It dries clear and is really glossy. I won't have to finish my paints as they are super glossy when they dry just from the pouring medium.
    In this video I mix 4 parts pouring medium to 1 part Arteza paint. I ended up making 2 oz of blue, 1 oz of gold, and 1 oz. of silver.

      Thank you so much for this video!
      I'm going to keep an eye out for that 60% off coupon!! Lol
      I'm currently only using the Glue All since I'm a newbie!
      I heard you say earlier in the video, 8:56, that you didn't get as many bubbles, but then when you zoomed in at the end, 14:38 I thought I saw alot of bumps from the bubbles.
      QUESTION:
      Are you still getting those when using this medium? Or was it because it was your first attempt?

    I wish I knew the day I started buying my materials trust me from day one I would of bought high pigment paints and mediums…. It seems you are saving money but you are bleeding money that’s also where you store it . Bottle would of been my go too instead of every size cup under the sun to at the end go to the bottles better to store also your paint last longer….Thanks for all your advice and time…😊❤❤❤

      TBD. It is relatively expensive and since I do a lot of testing currently I’d probably only use it for pieces I sell. I probably will experiment adding in to other mediums and the like.

    Hello again! Thanks as always for the info and tutorial you share with us. I learn so much from you!!! I have a Q: regarding medium, what is the difference between Liquid Clear and Drying Retarder? I get very confused with all these terms, too many. 😁 Thanks!

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  Рік тому +1

      Drying retarder just slows how fast something dries. We don't really use it with pouring. That is more for traditional painting so your acrylics don't dry so fast and you can mix paints on the canvas.

    You would do your audience a big favor if you'd show how you opened that gallon of Liquitex PM. I find it a mother to open, especially after resealing, if you left it sit for a time. Do yourself a favor and have alternative vessels to pour it into when you first open, like LBA did.

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  3 роки тому

      Haha, I hadn't thought of that but I agree that was a pain in the bottom. Especially if it dries a little and becomes cement.

    If you are really serious about your art, don't be afraid to invest in Liquitex or Golden pouring medium. They self-level much better, don't crack, keep colors bright and give you a shiny glossy finish.

    Do you ever mix pouring mediums together ( Like say, the Liquitex X ratio to PVA/Floetrole/Water ) ?

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  3 роки тому

      Generally I only mix mediums when I want to add an affect like adding floetrol for cell creation, or GAC 800 to keep cracks and crazing from happening, or Liquitex to glue to give it some shine and durability, etc. That is a personal preference though.

      This is specifically made to be used as a pouring medium. They have other ones that are varnishes and one that is a pouring medium and varnish all in one but this particular one is made to be mixed with colors.

    Is it true that PVA glue is not archival? That is why we should use a pouring medium so our art lasts for centuries, not decades? I'd like to know your opinion. Many thanks!

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  2 роки тому +1

      100% true. You can extend the life quite a bit by using a good UV protectant varnish but it won't last for centuries.

    Explanation for recipes very confusing

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  Рік тому

      MEDIUM:PAINT
      Craft paint 1:1. Student level acrylis 2:1. Liquid Acrylic 3-10:1 depending on how pigmented it is.
      That is just a guide to get you close to where you need to be for paint pouring. Each color and mixture can be slightly differnet if you use water to finsh thinning or if you just use more Liquitex to finish thinning.
