Today, the Peugeot 407 Coupe! Taking over from the generally well loved 406 coupe, the 407 got a battering from the motoring press - it wasn't pretty, and they weren't impressed with how it drove. But I reckon they've missed the point.

In my country is the most sold brand either than Renault ,or high-end cars from mercedes ,BMW or Toyota. Jaguar didn´t make it because ,when buying a new car one would think ,"Oh, this car must be bad the toyota high-end van is more expensive ", "Agreed my Mazda which is longer cost me more 10.000€", Here the ones who make some money and buy a car because it´s more expensive than it´s neighboor next door new car, and some years ago Jaguar was selling their cars cheap ,in a regular country it would be a reason to sell more cars but here in Portugal people buy the cars if they are more expensive to show to others that they have more money. Some years ago the "S´s" from Mercedes were rare to see ,i had two but when driving a 73 one, people would look and ask if it was the newer model from Mercedes it looked a litle better than the 300D or W123, this in early 80´s . If i dare say that it got a V8 engine, i would be in trouble because "V8´s only in America" . At the time in average Portuguese would have cars under 70 H.p. . Being a second hand car seller as a second source of income i remenber buying cheap a Fiat UNO but it said on the side Panel "70" wich means that the car would have 70 H.P. and it were the first UNO´s that came out ,people were amazed by how much power the car got, in late 80´s i had a Mazda RX-7 bought in the netherlands to a friend of mine was not a 2+2 but a two seat car the finishings seemed years ahead of the 2+2 which was kind of ridiculous ,i had a friend who was always saying to me that he would like to have a Mazda like mine but when i opened my mouth and said it had a 1.3L wankel engine, he would look and say "it´s not possible" and in 87 there was no unleaded fuel in Portugal ,only regular and super but when i opened the door of the gasoline deposit it would say in big letter "only unleaded fuel" because no one knew what unleaded fuel was i used to put super which had more octanes, but "Katalizador, what is that"and by that time there was no inspection on cars only in the 90´s and in 94 i was driving a 74 w114 but bought in germany and it had portuguese plates but from 1983 ,once a roadpatrol asked for my papers and before leting me go the soldier said ,"in two years you have to take it to inspection, this was a very undeveloped country, i had a lot of friends from abroad that in the summer they would come to south Portuguese beaches but to show their kids how their country was 50 years ago . There were giant beaches in the south but Atlantic coast, that one could drive through out the coast and it was rare to see a Portuguese family ,only the ones that were fisherman´s and lived in litle villages by the sea . If a porshe 911 (which was rare)apeared people would say "it as a VW engine" ,a kid that his father had lot´s of money when studying and 18 he took his driver permit and his father bought him a porshe 900 and something that had a big sticker in the back in orange saying 80 in black that meant that one in his first year of driver´s permit couldn´t drive above 80 km´s hour and everyday in school people would make fun of him ,first a porshe that could drive faster than 80 km/h thahn the engine sound "it´s a VW engine" .The main car of an agriculture worker and owner of the lands was a 504 from Peugeot, mainly diesel engines but some had the 2.0L engine but some also had the 404 or the 504 sport coupé or convertible wich is rare today, a Pininfarina car

As an American visiting Germany a few years ago, we rented a black 407, in 4 door sedan flavor. Two things stuck out, the ride quality and the general feeling of heaviness. Closing the doors felt like closing a bank vault door. You could feel how heavy and planted it was on the road. It just felt really solid for a "non-luxury" car like a Mercedes or the like. The ride quality was this awesome balance of firm and poised but also soft and compliant. Having driven many regular brand cars from the US and Japan, from Ford Fusions, Mazda 6 and Toyota Camry...the 6 being my favorite.... I can say this French car really left a positive impression on me and makes me wish we could get them in the states.

I've owned a 3.0 v6 Coupe for the past 5 years, and put around 70k+ km on the clock, and have loved every single kilometer. It is supremely comfortable, surprisingly engaging to drive, and once I familiarised myself with all its quirks and isms, it became an absolute blast to drive somewhat aggressively. Aerodynamically, this thing is amazing. On even the slightest of hills/declines, it picks up speed surprisingly quickly, and you can almost feel it slicing its way through the air. I've driven in excess of 1000km in a trip more than once, with a break or two, and owing to how insulated the cabin in, I arrived home without any aches, pains or major fatigue - it was incredible.
The frameless doors however do result in wind noise being something of an issue, and the petrol engine could do with 20nm more of torque, but other than that, I love it. It has been my daily for 5 years, and whilst it does love a drink in the city (I live in a small town, in which intersections are so frequent, you may as well give up on driving economically) but I have managed to get 780km on a single tank, with city and highway driving. Considering how the car has a 67l tank, with quoted figures of 10l/100km combined, I actually did pretty well. Running costs have been pretty decent, and I have gotten away with doing 3 major services, and a single minor service in the 70k km. Fuel costs have been a different story, but with the enjoyment I derive from driving the car, I really don't care. The satnav doesn't work, but that's only because the South African government did not purchase the map rights, so the stock head unit never had nav - a discovery that tore me in half because other than a million buttons, in dash navigation was what I adored about the 407.
The 407 Coupe has been my favourite since I saw one in 2006, as my brother drove me home from school, and we saw a silver one driving up the road. I fell in love the moment I saw that long nose, and 12 years later when I was walking through town, I saw the one I currently own on the dealer lot, staring at her. It felt like her headlights followed me - like a pair of eyes - and I fell in love. I kept looking back to see if she still there as I walked along the road, and just knew that I had to have her. Fast forward a few weeks, and as I sat in the driver's seat for the first time as her owner, I wrapped my hands around the steering wheel and wept. It was a moment I will never forget, not least because two minutes later, I crashed into the gate of my building's underground lot as I drove out.
Anyway, this wasn't supposed to be nearly as long as it turned out to be. What I actually wanted to say was, Peugeot's get a bad rap from everybody and their dog, but honestly, there really are some diamonds in the Peugeot lineup, and the 407 Coupe is certainly one of them.
    Cheers.

I don't comment much on videos, but now I just have to. Having owned one of these for about a year and a half now, I can say that you put my thoughts into words so well! Your observations from the slightly diesel sounding idle and the somewhat strange looks to the ride quality are spot on. When I tell people that the ride is comparable to some much higher end cars they look at me like I'm insane. Peugeot really nailed the chassis on these, it's firmer than the saloons but not umcomfortable and gets better the faster you go, up to a point of course. For the money I can't think of a better car. It's nice to see someone else also "gets" this car. Keep up the great work with the channel!

I've been servicing it for the last 10 years and the thing has been nearly faultless. It's never had any major electrical problems or anything go wrong with the powertrain. The front suspension "swivel joints", a tie rod end and droplink every now and then, rear brake calipers, the power steering pump and the center display screen have been the only things I recall replacing other than regular service items. It is a quiet and reliable workhorse even at 350k kilometers, a way better car than people give it credit for.

I have 3 of the extremely rare (only 51 sold in the uk) run out 3.0 hdi 407 coupes. Such an awesome car and with 310 bhp they fly. Electronic dampers, double glazed windows, these coupes are so refined and smooth. I achieve 40-50mpg on a run even with the weight and high power output. I bought my first one to replace my Range Rover sport and it’s miles better. I also have several of the much prettier v6 406 coupes but the 407 is actually a much improved car over the 406. Don’t get me wrong the 406 is brilliant, it goes well, looks and rides superb but the 407 is in a league above for refinement and comfort. Don’t compare the 407 to the 407 coupe it’s a totally different car, just enjoy it for what it is. Very underrated and also very reliable when looked after properly. The 407 coupe was also built on a slower moving production line to aid build quality and fit and finish. It shows as mine have not a single rattle or creak in 13 years.

I drove 407 SW 2.0 diesel for 9 years, and was quite pleased with it. Top mileage, lots of trunk space, fairly reliable. It had the notorious air vent claps failure and the screen was faulty. The replacement screen was dirt cheap, air vents not so much. Today I drive C5 3.0 HDI biturbo (you mentioned that engine in this video), and this engine is a joy to drive. Not the fastest from the start, but it has some power when it starts to move. I believe that a 407 coupe with that engine would be a serious intercontinental transporter :-)

Until my two lads turned into six footers (five years ago) we ran a pair of these as family cars, with an MG Midget for fun. They were both black, 2.2 petrols, one cloth, one leather interior. I preferred the cloth as it gripped far better. The suspension was sublime with double wishbone front and indie rear, a very pretty aluminium structure if that's what floats your boat.
I liked the double glazing, I liked the solid feel, the fuel economy and the power delivery, and the cheap parts. I wasn't fond of the looks, but you don't have to look at it from the inside. We took ours to the South of France and set off numerous speed cameras (never received any fines :-) ) and perhaps the best bit was both cost less than £2k.
The only downside is the lack of rear headroom. Shame, they were brill and I will get another at some point.

Just saw that the sedan pulled 1.0g at Brands Hatch on the occassion of Autocar's 2004 for Britain's Best Driver's Car. However, you've got to drive a 3.0 petrol version. They all come with an adaptive suspension (with around 17 stages of stiffness that can change every 22 ms and a sport mode to have it stiffer all the time), a variable steering (hydraulic, not electrohydraulic like the one you drove) and a valved exhaust (it even does pops). The engine's not the quickest, but it makes an incredible noise inside, much more special than an Alfa V6 of that time and if it's not a coupe it only comes with a 6 speed auto that was also fitted to the Mini Cooper S or the BMW i8. If it's a bit wet, it throws the back around very easily. My dad has a 3.0 petrol SW from new and it's just surprising to see what a special car it is. BTW, the mk1 508 was also a 407 underneath, but with double wishbone fitted only to the top GT spec. Anyway, thanks a lot for the review, it makes me giggle to have someone like you say good things about the car.

I absolutely loved it & kept it until 2018 when the combination of ULEZ & £450 a year road tax did for it. I replaced it with a VW cc which despite being a GT R Line was nowhere near as well equipped (no electric seats or folding mirrors) nor quite as much fun to drive. I passed on the first generation 508 but now have a 2020 (70) new generation 508 petrol hybrid. I'm not sure that I like it quite as much, it has a great spec but the fuel storage penalty I pay for the sake of having a battery that costs about £4.50 to put a full charge on & then returns about 15 miles on a good day is of questionable logic.

Ironically the car got written off just after it was finally fully repaired when my wife drove into a cow in Botswana - the day after I’d written off a Dodge Caliber by driving into a cow 🥴
Edit: just to add insult to injury, the insurance company paid out R100k less for the car, because Peugeot had dropped their prices by R100k on the 3.0l to get rid of them 🤬

It's a shame the 508 never got a Coupe. 406 and 407 are gorgeous affordable cars in my book.

This thing looks a lot like the 1998 Dodge Avenger coupe we had here in America. Although, I have no doubt this was built to a higher standard 😅.

Thanks for this. Nice to see such a nice car with 100k miles on it. I am in Madagascar now and they sell cars for shockingly high prices claiming to be 1 owner with 85K km that are simply outrageous. The car market here is tragic. And there is. O real financing of new cars. Folks should never complain about $ 500/ month BMW lease with 30,000 mile allowance. That just does not exist here. 😢

What most journo's forgot to mention (or just didn't care about) is the engineering. Double wishbone and multi-link suspension is just the start. All those arms are made from cobapress aluminium (hybrid forged), along with both front and rear subframes to save unsprung mass. The bonnet is aluminium and the bootlid reinforced thermoplastic to reduce the sprung mass. With all that weight saving... how did it get to 1.7 tonnes? Chassis reinforcement and sound deadening. It is the torsionally stiffest car Pug ever made and maxed out the Euro NCAP front crash test. Even the steering uses electro-hydraulic to give better feel but still be comfortable and economical. Every panel has sound deadening material put in. The entertainment system had a 30Gb hard drive to store your music on, some came with USB drives and you could even use voice commands (as well as it worked in the mid 00's).
