the Laguna Coupe is very handsome car, more so than the 407 coupe, probably on a par with the 406 coupe I think. Both turn my head more than that Audi Coupe model I forget or a 3 series
The front has always reminded me of sharks "face" (?) with the sloping lights and gills. I love the new style Peugeots. Very sophisticated looking and classy
Im looking for one of these in Poland with a 3.0 V6 petrol manual instead of a CLK, it's unusual, unique and quite cheap to run because of the peugeot badge. Very underrated car and I love when something like this is on your channel, it shows people that you don't have to have an expensive car with premium nonsense attached to it to have something good.
Good on you..... and your good common sense. The poncy cars are exactly that: Status symbols for the people that never even lift the bonnet. (Language translation: "Pop the hood")( Grits his teeth.)
The problem with what you are looking for is very rare. French petrols in general are rare but top of the line V6 ones? Good luck. They do exist but damn u gotta search high and low. Here in Croatia I almost never saw Pugs with petrol unfortunately.
I had a 2009 3.0HDi for 10 years. Fabulously comfortable, extremely reliable (due to regular servicing), and pleasingly rare. As maybe mentioned elsewhere, it was built on a separate production line along with the C6 and hence why the quality was a step up from the standard P407s. Eventually replaced it with a CLS Shooting Brake for the extra boot space.
@@brunomferreira oh I meant 3 x 407 3.0 hdi coupes, although I would be partial to a cls shooting brake although I have a Ferrari FF to do that job. 👍 the 407 3.0 hdi is a great car
@@frenchbred2081 you really have great taste in cars. Next on my list is actually the FF or the GTC4 Luso. Although idealy I would have the FF because it's a lot prettier. Being so complex is what makes me steer towards the Luso
I have a soft spot for Peugeot coupes; the 406, 407 and RCZ are all cars I really like. I think Matt's description is spot on; the 406 Coupe is pretty, the 407 Coupe is striking, although I think the Shark mouth look works on the coupe. After the work, it does not look like a car with 170k on the clock, you could easily convince me that has half that. It's another example of how a supposedly unreliable a car, or brand, can be reliable IF it's looked after, and that 407 has definitely been looked after.
These cars are incredible as long distance/highway cruisers. Quiet, comfortable, composed on the road, loaded with features and creature comforts, space, etc. I've loved all 7 years of my ownership- although mine is the petrol V6, so it's not as efficient in town. But i love her all the same. I'm glad Matt liked it, now I can call my resident assassin and cancel the contract 😅😂
I had a 406 3ltr Petrol was quick sky blue and it had 230 000 miles on it when i sold it .and its still around .the cumfyist car ive ever owned even better than my BMW E38 today.
I wouldn't have bothered with the wheels ( or priced up a smart repair ) or the second valet as it already looked fine . Would have sorted the paintwork on the drivers door and put two tyres on the back .
Agreed, the 406 coupe was a very pretty looking car, Pininfarina did a fantastic job. The 407 not so much IMO, it looks like a drunk 406 had a one night stand with a Hyundai Coupe and didn't use protection. Certainly not ugly, but just doesn't have the same elegant lines as the 406.
Its double glazed, the doors have safety bars (iron) in them and therefore the hinges need regular maintenance as the doors WILL sag and then the door wont close without a slight lift motion. Think of it as a Peugeot soft-close Matt.
Talking of "never have thought the french would have thought of such a thing", Rolls Royce and Mercedes paid Citroen to license their hydropneumatic suspension, as it was the very best 😮 french barges are very often underrated, simply for not being German to be fair Get an original DS on the channel. What a car! Directional headlights in the 1950s 😮
I totally agree. I have had many Citroens and Pugs and they have all been trouble free. On the other hand I owned a Cortina and Corsa which were dreadful. Goes to show that the badge does not tell the full story.
Nerd time, the windows are not double glazed, they are laminated, (like a windscreen), most cars non-windscreen glass is simple toughened and shatters on hard body impact. This lamination adds a level of security and acoustic enhancement as the interlayer has acoustic reduction properties coupled with the fact that there is more glass by volume / weight and the additional glass mass absorbs more noise. The 'misting' you described is actually the (plastic) laminate interlayer starting to de-laminate from the two glass panes as a result of the glass edge becoming 'damp', in simple terms water reacts with the plastic interlayer with the outcome you see. It will inevitably slowly increase in area over time, it is likely that there was a slight manufacturing error in the lamination process which has led to preferential 'attack' at that location.
The front end of the car lets it down. When these first came out, I had a Saturday job at an independent Peugeot dealer. It has to be worth £2500, but price it at £2495. Great video as always.
I have a 407sw 2.7 biturbo, which I bought in 2009, not a a single problem since I bought it, normal consumables, clutch, tyres, timing belt, water pump......keep on top of maintenance they run forever, difference with mine, I buy from people in Italy, he spent near 3,000 euros in getting manual transmission conversion, it is great car & I love it 😊
I can see the 406 coupe being worth quite a bit one day, Pininfarina did a really nice job with the design. I wish Peugeot had gone with that ethos with this one but it's still not too bad, that's not at all a bad place to sit for long highway miles if you can avoid the hypertax cities.
I'm amazed the name Pininfarina is only pronounced here in the comments below, what a pitty!! Anyway.... nice content again! @davocc2405: Good you mentioned it!
They are a beautiful things but only 10,000 ever cam to the UK and there's hardly any left and the value is just about zero - unless it's an immaculate, low mileage V6. I just gave mine away!
Thank you for featuring one of the most unappreciated and forgotten cars that deserve so much better. If I was in your shoes, I would just keep it as a rare car which will become increasingly rare. Especially since it runs really well after 170k miles (273k km). A testament to the build quality, it is.
It is funny how things change. When I was young, a friend's father, a GP, had a Peugeot 504 - and we thought it was so sophisticated compared to the usual Fords, Vauxhalls and BL cars that were the norm. Wonderful ride and comfortable seats.
The cost of the Autotrader package is eye watering. Before you've even paid your wages, electricity, water, business rstes etc youve got to find £6500 per month. Its insane. Just breaking even in the motor trade must be very difficult
I thought he was going to say £6.5k a year and I was already getting ready to be outraged but per month is just crazy! What's the break even point and how much do you actually save per annum to make it a worthwhile expense?
@@kabukidreamboy It's just mental. £78,000 a year, just in Autotrader fees. I can understand it might be affordable for a seriously big garage that might sell a hundred cars a week, but must be a massive stress on a smaller business like High Peak . Just makes me appreciate these small businesses even more making it work with costs like that.
I just put my own post up. I find it utterly baffling. I mean how many cars are they selling off that modest sized lot? One a day, maybe less, so it’s over £200 in ad costs per car. Private seller would be around £30.
I love these big old French barges! In fact I keep a 2005 Peugeot 407 saloon (2.0 HDI) at my house in N. Ireland for just when we come over for Summer holidays. Cheap as chips, but comfortable for 4 adults and returns well over 40mpg. Always liked those Coupe wheels though - I'm looking out for a set for mine! The missing/broken screenwash cover and the corrosion at the front wing/bumper edge were both common things with mine when I first got it! On another note, I wonder how many of us car guys and gals will be setting down this evening after dinner for the last Grand Tour show.........
The 407 is grand but the 407 Coupé is a different beast. Wider wheelbase, dedicated production line (in Rennes) and equal or better than a similar age Audi, Jag or BMW
Although I've always been more a fan of small cars (blame the Italian Job and the Mini Cooper) I have always had a soft spot for big French cars. The 407 Coupe was definitely the difficult second album given it followed the gorgeous 406 but it still has something about it... Hope you find the long-awaited Citroen C6 for the channel soon, its a car I've lusted after too, like a millennial version of the classic CX
quite funny the french cars get a lot of jip. when most of the time they pioneered a lot of tech and some stunning designs and more reliable than you think. from auto lights and wipers peugeot and merc came up with.
Agree. I don't think French cars get the recognition they deserve. Even today. Meanwhile German cars are overrated in my opinion living off a historic image of quality and badge image.

My 2.2 HDI Peugeot 406 estate was £1400 and 6 years old when I bought in 2008. It had 150.000 motorway miles on it and was a great car and consumption was a wacking 55mpg.
Beautiful car, it has style and class as you would expect from a French high end car, it may not be a classic but as you said its nice to be in something that’s not the same boring box 98% of the planets driving.😊
I want to say I hate it, but I do like the 407, and the V6 is by far the best engine option available. It’s such a tidy example, and I just love the ‘chunkiness’ of everything… the seats, the steering wheel, the double glazed frameless windows. I had a Peugeot 308 GT from this era, and was looking at the 407 as an alternative. Majority of the cars you save Matt, make me wish I had £50k sitting around to buy loads of them from you 🤣🤣
Had a 2.2 for a few years and loved it. Took it for many long runs and it was always a pleasant drive no matter if it was summer or a snow storm. This video kinda made me miss that old gem a lot. Hmm do need a new beater when I think I about it 😅
yes, Matt....why not tease us Americans again with another cool car we never got/can't have! This has shades of Ferrari 550 Maranello in it's design, and I love it.
This car seems to me like it’s not only an absolute bargain, but you’re getting so much value for money due to the luxurious nature! I wasn’t expecting it to be so well specd. Defo a Q car and certainly worth investing rather than an equivalent 6 series or similar
Had a 2012 Peugeot 508 and kept it up until it turned 11 and apart from servicing it and new front shocks it was extremely reliable. It also felt like you were driving something much more upmarket , after 200,000 km there wasnt even a single rattle. Sold it for a Toyota which develops a new rattle every week. Proper maintanence and the Peugeots will mechanically be a very sound car.
Hi Matt, I think the 407 coupe was built in a different factory from the normal Peugeots, I bought low mileage 2 yr old Coupe Diesel, to sell and smoke around years ago, solid car but I struggled to sell it and in the end just got my money back.
The moon is 240,000 miles away. The Peugeot 2.0 L HDI is probably in the top three diesel engines made so far, so bodes well for the 3 .0 L in the coupe. 170,000 miles is nothing for these engines, at least another 130,000 to go before big bills. The starter motor is £250 supplied and fitted .
Lovely car, and as it's a diesel 170,000 miles isn't necessarily a sign it's heading for the scrapyard anytime soon given it has been regularly serviced and well maintained.
That is a everyday proper fast GT car. I think you missed the whole point in this video. After I watched this video , I went and bought one 2.7 hdi for my self and thanks to you, I love it.
Not sure about this one Matt, Starter motor and or flywheel ring gear possibly chipped tooth. Nearly £400 to tax and high miles. Great interior though.
I'm an American who rented a black one of those in 2006 from Sixt in Cologne, Germany when I spent my junior year of University abroad. My friends and I were impressed with how comfortable and how fast it was on the Autobahn especially considering we had reserved a Golf or similar.
I've had 3 of these, 1 petrol (manual), 2 diesels (manual & auto)...great cars; rare and distinctive...the electrics were a tad 'scary', granted...but proper luxury: refined and smooth.
Very underrated car, you found a very good example even with high mileage. Its funny how British always talk all the worst about French cars and don't want to admit it that the French can make good and reliable cars. ( Not all) :D It's worth that money all day.
I used to have a Peugeot 207, it was an excellent car, I'd buy Peugeot again. The UK market is definitely biased towards German, if you want to be 'seen' you buy German. If you just want a car that is reliable and gets you from A to B and doesn't cost loads to insure, buy French, Japanese or Korean 😊
nice buy mat like you said a great motorway car they run forever if used in the correct manner this needs to do miles not potter around town or school runs but the inside looks fantastic when you think of age and miles good owner s before who looked after it ❤ well saved
Just as I was thinking C6, you mentioned it! The Pug 607 is a similar car too without the crazy suspension that is probably failed on any cheap part ex/auction cars!
My Citroen C5 with the same 3.0 HDI just clocked over 200.000 km. Did over 50.000 km in last two years. Went to Switzerland, Italy, Austria... No major issues. This engines need regular oil changes, and they don't like to be pushed over 4000 rpm for longer period od time - the crank can snap then.
Hi Matt if You manage to change the position of the steering wheel to the left side it is sold for the asking price. All the best from the Netherlands , I enjoy Your UA-cam contributions and wish we had car dealers here like You.
My wife had the 406 saloon ( 3.0 petrol V6), as a company car. I helped her pick it 😁😁. It was , and is her best ever company car. Looked fab ( cream leather) and a beautiful engine. One day at the traffic lights, a guy in a golf GTI with 3 mates, was giving it big revs for the traffic lights grand prix. She smoked him. At the next lights he pulled up, alongside, and gave her a grin and thumbs up.
Back in the day, it’s funny how people would have taken a low powered budget spec 3 series coupe or A5 over a high powered high spec 407 Coupe. The badge says it all i guess
Great video, Matt. Very interesting car. £2.5K easy, perfect for someone that wants a good looking, impressive car and DOESNT want to do too many miles, but wants to do them in style. Grandad territory- it will fly off the forecourt as any car less than £3K would these days.
The Citroen C5 had double glazed windows and was ridiculously quite… The French did make luxury cars back when Audi wasn’t considered the brand they are today. Just remember the DS?
I've got a 2008 Peugeot 407SW with a two-litre diesel and a six-speed auto gearbox and I love it! It's a GT with all the goodies and it's reliable while everything works as it should and it does 60MPG on a run! I guess it'll see me out even though it's got 160,00 miles up so far.
Honestly, Matt; you've got two ideal customers for that car. A young man just starting out with his first real job after graduating from University, and money is a bit tight. Or, a very recently divorced older man who is paying alimony and child support. But wants to recapture a bit of his youth with a lovely coupe, and money is a bit tight. Doubt you'll have too much trouble selling it, even without a warranty.
I had a black 407 coupe. I had a 2.7 Bi-Turbo V6 Diesel. I loved the refinement and the amazing power! I said goodbye to it because I needed a 4 door car. Worth the experience despite the French reliability issues.
I was looking for one of these BUT sensible head popped up an bought an estate- the 407sw xs 170 2.2 hdi. loved it so much we bought 2 of them. They are motorway mile munchers. Buy the Peugeot software, some special tools and fix ‘em yourself. Run them on Shell V-power and you’ve a car for life….
Interested to understand why you wouldn't get the bottom of the door sorted when you did the other body work touch ups? Was the cost too high? and the noise from the starter motor suggests its about to give up put off a customer ?
My wife had the 406 saloon when they first came out, and it was a gem. As a company car we had the option to buy it and wish we had done. Agree that the 406 coupe was better looking than this model but, having said that, this is a nice example. I've had three Peugeots and they've all served me well for very little outgoings, including a 306 2l diesel which was one of the best handling cars I've owned. Before you said £2495, I was shouting 'two and a half...all day!"...So I'm sure it'll go, if it hasn't already. Good to hear that you're not into big flashy new motors.🤣...Another entertaining video Matt. Cheers Roj
I had one of these cars once. Same spec. I had it for about 8 years, and drove it about 80,000 miles. It was wonderful. It wasn't a sports car, but as a 'grand tourer' it was perfect. And I always thought it looked great, a bit like a shark from the right angle. Watching this video definitely brought back happy memories. Thanks, Matt. Great video.

As someone who deals with Peugeot vans on a daily basis I totally agree with you, the last decent ones were of the late 00's since then they've been an absolute nightmare. Currently got 4 sat with dead engines at less than 60k miles
@@cirian75 the 1.6 is the old dv6 engine and they're glorious things, we had a few in the fleet over 300k before management said they were "no longer serviceable" and replaced them with new ones which have all been a nightmare. Bloody great car Matt. But switchgear awkward on the doors. The doors themselves are awkward so I always took 2 parking spaces 😂❤ 3.0L V6 is so sought after. Can't believe you got that for only £900. I had a 407 Coupe with the 2.2 petrol. Eventually put an LPG Prins kit on it and Hankook Ventus Evo II. It was such a f**king lovely car to commute 70 miles each way 5 days a week on twisties and motorway. Lovely wide stance, really good on snow and ice surprisingly. VERY hard on suspension parts as its a heavy yoke. I reckon its a far nicer car than the 406 Coupé because, let's face it, you're inside the bloody thing; not sat outside it. A bloody great car. Mine went to 170k miles before hewd gasket blew. Oil to coolant unfortunately. Plenty of poke in 3rd and 4th in the standard 2.2 petrol. The 3.0 V6 is a monster and will attract the right buyer (if you export it to Ireland and sell it to me for a bargain 😂😂😂 )
Whenever you get into a well maintained 2000-2010 vintage car,it has unparalleled sense of appointment...nice rounded solid interiors ,which is a extension of theme from exteriors.
What a gorgeous looking car. Absolutely stunning. Did I hear right Matt? £6,500 per month on Autotrader? That's a humungous amount per month. Did you mean per year? That's still a huge amount. Great video as always. 😎😎
Hi Mat, we owned a 3 Litre petrol auto for a little over 3 years, and it was a lovely car in many respects, apart from the sub 15 mpg and the BSI ECU unit deciding to leave the boot in a state of broken, lol
Outside of the UK, Peugeot & Renault/Dacia dominate the new car market by some margin. UK motoring industry and the press that reflect it are biased towards German manufactures that is obvious as soon as you go to Europe.
My first car was a 207 1.6 VTi, it was fantastic, nice automatic gearbox, lovely light steering, deceptively large inside (I'm a big bloke) and frankly I'd buy a Peugeot again.
Love these cheap buy cars videos. It makes me poke around for one too on AT for fun. One day, I'll end up pulling the trigger after one of these videos. Cheers Matt, have a nice weekend. 👍
Not sure why you would spend on a valet it didn't need, had the wheels refurbished, which were just a bit scruffy and then leave the rusty door, which looks terrible
This is a really nice car, and I do get it. You've got all the luxury and comfort of something like a Mercedes CLK or Audi A5, without looking like a flash git living on credit. You should also have more wallet friendly running costs, and in theory at least, a few less histrionics too. After all, Peugeot is the king of big durable diesel engines. It's a winner for me Matt.
I'd buy that, having enjoyed a Jaguar S type with the same engine! I'd drive it home to Belarus and keep the British plates so I could go shopping in Vilnius again! My Jaguar EPace 240D is banned from the Baltics now but that would be perfect! 👌 Gives you a different slant on people's needs and desires! In fact I'll probably email you soon to see what I could buy on the same principle, as I need medical treatment in the UK and it would be cheaper than long term car hire Matt!
Still got all 3 of mine! Awesome cars.
A man of taste I see. Fellow CLS Shooting Brake owner here
@@brunomferreira oh I meant 3 x 407 3.0 hdi coupes, although I would be partial to a cls shooting brake although I have a Ferrari FF to do that job.
I owned a 2007 Petrol one of these back in it's day and used to generously refer to it as my "French 6 Series"
I had a 406 coupe years ago and it was the best car ever!
I had a Peugeot 406 V6 on a W Reg. It was one of the best cars I ever owned. Proper sleeper. 😉

One in the Eye for Peugeot Haters 😁😁😂😂 Nice one Matt 👍👍
The grille could do with being replaced as well, looks like it might have eaten a hedge or two.

I couldn't agree more.
i owned one in black i wish i had never sold it fantastic car
Its double glazed, the doors have safety bars (iron) in them and therefore the hinges need regular maintenance as the doors WILL sag and then the door wont close without a slight lift motion. Think of it as a Peugeot soft-close Matt.
Back in 97, I bought a 406d executive... Loved that car, even with its paltry 90bhp...
had the v6 petrol it is a great chassis, the build quality was superb too
Talking of "never have thought the french would have thought of such a thing", Rolls Royce and Mercedes paid Citroen to license their hydropneumatic suspension, as it was the very best 😮 french barges are very often underrated, simply for not being German to be fair
Get an original DS on the channel. What a car! Directional headlights in the 1950s 😮
I totally agree. I have had many Citroens and Pugs and they have all been trouble free. On the other hand I owned a Cortina and Corsa which were dreadful. Goes to show that the badge does not tell the full story.
I've got one of these in black. It's so underated! I've only ever seen a handful on the roads aswell
I have a 407sw 2.7 biturbo, which I bought in 2009, not a a single problem since I bought it, normal consumables, clutch, tyres, timing belt, water pump......keep on top of maintenance they run forever, difference with mine, I buy from people in Italy, he spent near 3,000 euros in getting manual transmission conversion, it is great car & I love it 😊
If Amazon do continue the grand tour with a different cast, Matt needs to be a presenter. Pure petrol head and car lover
@@cologne2792 I have restored and sold 2 immaculate v6 406 coupes for 6 grand this year and I have 6 more mint ones stored up.
I agree the early 504s rode like a XJ6 at the time and were a wonderful cruiser but tough at the same time.
The cost of the Autotrader package is eye watering.

Just breaking even in the motor trade must be very difficult
Just said exactly the same to my missus 😂

It's just mental. £78,000 a year, just in Autotrader fees.
I can understand it might be affordable for a seriously big garage that might sell a hundred cars a week, but must be a massive stress on a smaller business like High Peak . Just makes me appreciate these small businesses even more making it work with costs like that.
That’s just madness, all that dough gone before you even open the door!
I just put my own post up. I find it utterly baffling. I mean how many cars are they selling off that modest sized lot? One a day, maybe less, so it’s over £200 in ad costs per car. Private seller would be around £30.
Its alway good when Matt says this was some car back in its day
I love these big old French barges!
100% it will be a bittersweet moment 😢

The 407 is grand but the 407 Coupé is a different beast. Wider wheelbase, dedicated production line (in Rennes) and equal or better than a similar age Audi, Jag or BMW
Do it up Matt and raffle it. Its an absolute collector's item in due course. Along with C6, M16, XM 2.5td and Activa
Saw a Nissan 100 NX here in Perth West Aus yesterday. Figured you’d be importing it soon 😂
quite funny the french cars get a lot of jip. when most of the time they pioneered a lot of tech and some stunning designs and more reliable than you think. from auto lights and wipers peugeot and merc came up with.

I want to say I hate it, but I do like the 407, and the V6 is by far the best engine option available.
It’s such a tidy example, and I just love the ‘chunkiness’ of everything… the seats, the steering wheel, the double glazed frameless windows.

I had a 57 plate, great car, but deep pockets needed, was very expensive on road tax and insurance. That 3.0 V6 engine is to die for though.
Think you forgot the cost of painting the door mirror! Nice car but no doubt quite expensive on road tax.

385 on the diesel so not too bad. My dad's 1.6 petrol Touran is the same rate 😭. The petrol however...... The top wack 735😵

Ahhh. Sweet. I've always loved these cars.
