We're back for a new season of HiLow and our WRX blew up instantly. Are Subarus as fragile as everyone says? Is James cursed? We got to the bottom of what killed HiCar.

No. This game is a lootbox scam, promotes gambling to kids, and is straight up spyware. I know you want that Raid money but have some integrity.

Nah
Jeremaih is literally giving us the old pre-merger donut and I am so glad since I thought the old donut was lost. Please do more stuff like this (and bring science garage back)
Pre-merger? What is it mergered to/from? Serious asking
I hope Bart is doing well
@@KeisarPR Recurrent Venture acquired Donut a while ago, since then the videos became pretty meh with traces of the old content showing up from time to time
@@VeeSpek wow, I never knew this. That explains a lot
I knew something happened 😢 i couldn’t put a finger on it but I would be waiting on new content from the guys now it’s like I don’t even check when they post
It's so easy to tell when a company refuses to let Donut put their spin on advertising.
Or maybe they just didn’t pay enough to have a whole acting plan and video taped. It’s easier and more budget friendly to record 1. Person on a green screen standing and reading some lines.
It’s always the mobile games. They pay big bucks but always force them to do trash ad reads
@@OzzySepulveda raid shadow legend has very strict guidelines for their ads.
they have a set length for the ad as well as specific points to talk about. due to this, you'll notice that no matter the creator almost all their ads feel the same.
This is the very reason I refuse to download the game. You can tell they clearly moved up and are operating purely as a big business and took away all of the fun. Now, all of the fun ad reads capture my attention and I'll watch and then look into the product further which leads to more purchase from me.
@@jonliebherr1223 that’s a good point, they would make more if they just let them do it their own way, probably
Quick tip to save the engines: WRX engines don't have baffles in the oil pan, while STI engines do. When tracking a subaru, the oil shoots towards the outside of the turn (towards the head, because of the horizontal layout of the boxer engine), starving the oil pump leading to premature rod bearing failures. It's a quick and easy upgrade to swap out the oil pan for one that has baffles, and it solves the issue (aftermarket, or STI pan).
(It's not an issue with city driving, but the long high-speed turns at the track make this mod a requirement to be somewhat reliable)
If you’re going to replace stock just get a KillerB kit or something with better pickup tube as well and usually more oil capacity.
This happens in a lot of cars, Honda suffers from the same thing, that's why when i built my civic, a baffled oil pan was high on the list of items that went in. Pro tip: Buy a baffled pan with baffles welded in. After-market kits that make you rivet or screw into your pan, then seal the holes ALWAYS leak. spend the loot for baffled pan. Once of prevention is worth $10,000 of cure
As soon as I heard it running I was like "yep, spun bearing... piston is traveling too far up the bore and hitting the head"...
Confirmed at 9:01 😔
You can see the part of the head near the bottom of the screen has a distinct ring of new-looking metal where the piston has beaten the carbon build-up right off the head surface.
Didn't really need to go any further than a noise test to know what killed this engine, but hey... it was fun to watch these boys smash their fingers 😅
Would you happen to know if the newer sti oil pans will work on a 2016 wrx
@@WillemDodd @Kxngs If you don't find the information you want on the part manufacturer's website, I would recommend searching one of the many WRX owners' forums and message boards. You can use Google to search within a website: just enter the website URL, then a space, followed by your search terms.
From my basic Subaru knowledge, WRXs have used the completely redesigned FA-series engines since like 2014, while the STIs still run the old EJ-series engines. They're mostly not interchangeable as far as I know. So, my educated guess, to answer your question, is:
No. I highly doubt the oil pan from a "newer" STI will fit a 2016 WRX.
But my big tip is: don't rely on UA-cam comments when you're trying to buy car parts.
I love it when Donut actually teaches me something. Would love more diagnotistc stuff like this!

Baffled oil pan should be a day zero mod for a WRX, but also the break in miles are a good idea.
bro i heard they didnt break it in and stopped watching like thats why.
@@verascus Its not like they did 60 runs on the new motor rebuild.. they did some quick pulls i assume and it had rod knock. People are actin like they maxed the engine out when they did what anybody would do if they had a new motor. Especially an STI thinking it could handle it which I guess it cant.
not like it should come of from factory from like that since its wrx.
this Teardown was freakin awesome! I know this must have been a huge amount of work but I hope you guys do more of these.
This is the best donut video in over a year. I was fully engaged and it didn't feel like a gimmick. Something any do it yourselfer could get massive value out of. Thank you Jeremiah.
The motorcycle maintenance one is up there for me. Always nice to see a "How To" vid that's so quick, and concise.
If you want more "learning type" videos. Go back about 4 or 5 years when Donut had a guy named Bart doing videos where he explained how every part of the car works. I think it was either called How It Works or Science Garage. That guy broke down and explained every part to it's most basic form so that I thought I could repair every part of my car myself, lol. He was the reason I subscribed to Donut. I truly miss that part of this channel. This video sort of reminded me of the science garage videos. You should check them out, I guarantee you'll learn something about cars.
Jeremiah is annoying and not funny. Dude sucks
I just got in Forza horizon 5 and I found your channel
@@lustar3232 Zach usually makes mechanic vids like that but hasn't really made any lately. Jeremiah focuses more on the engineering/science side of cars

It’s nice to FINALLY see a return to this perfect formula ❤️
science garage?!?! Bring it back!!!
But can it be repaired and put back into the car?
They didn’t do the break in period though and I almost clicked off the video once I heard that part..like of course it knocked then, but, stayed because it’s donut and I know the quality will be good and entertaining to watch.
teaching? i didnt understand a thing, if you want you can go watch a asmr vid on how disassemble it
Absolutely love these kinds of videos, their not just entertaining, but honest to god educational for car enthusiasts. While most of us aren't ever going to completely disassemble an engine for diagnostics, this still teaches you a process and mind set that's useful in less extreme scenarios.
Have been gone from watching Donut for a while now but after watching this one, it reclaimed my enthusiasm for it! Definitely need more videos like these that just do a casual troubleshoot and teardown of just any type of problem that can happen out in the track, let alone out in the road. Hope to see more content like this again!
This is probably the most expensive series (the Hi/Lo series in general) that you guys produce, but by far the most entertaining (although I do love some sh*tty product testing/comparisons)
I'm not really a car guy, but the way you put together your videos and how well they're made. I find watching for 14 minutes why a car I've never seen before in my life failed.

I love how tired Jeremy looks when dissasembling the motor. It makes you know that he's not just "a host" on the show or something while someone else is doing the hard work, HE'S doing the hard work, with obvious help of a team. But I really like that genuine touch on this videos. Also I love the little camera doing a close-up at 7:55 while Jeremiah's showcasing the sparkplugs lets you remember that there's people behind the show too.
Donut Media is by far one of my favourite channels because of the ammount of work people put into this videos, not just the guys that actually show on camera but the people who roll this things and edit them too. Thanks again for everything.

Glad to see some actual car mechanic content again! I’ve missed the older videos where Jeremiah gets into the technical sides of cars! Also I’ve really liked the bike series too!
Great video, I'm gonna show it to my auto shop students. And thank you for using the correct term "clearance," and not the wrong term "tolerance." For some reason these two terms get muddled together into one. A minor detail, but it's nice to have an entire video in which I don't have to revisit and correct minor things with my students. It be like that every time lol. I couldnt do it anymore and will never again. Next flat engine ill ever own is porsche, which will likely never happen.

@@darrenseepersad3705 all AWD cars will be a little harder to work on hence more is going in. but for subaru's all of its cars use boxer type engines that have the oil starving problem but it wont really be a problem for day to day driving you will only really start to have an issue on the track or a very long drive
An upgraded oil sump on the Subies would be a super cool upgrade to feature on a hi lo episode. You can get cheaper oil pans that have waffle pattern to keep the oil from sloshing, and more expensive auxiliary oil pumps. Thanks for the awesome episode!

Whoever is in charge of the visuals does an amazing job. I'm a complete car noob and their visualizations help me understand everything. Thank you!
What I like about Jeremiah is that he can take things apart, sure, but most importantly that he can put them back together again and they'll actually work 😊
I don't have any experience with EJ engines, but I have a huge amount of experience with the earlier EA engines. EA engines hate thin oil at high RPM, they spin rod bearings with it. All I will run in an EA71 or EA81 is Aeroshell 15w50 aircraft oil. For a few reasons. #1 is it "sticks" inside the bearings. I have taken engines that have not run in weeks and they still have oil in the rod and main bearings. No startup noise whatsoever. #2 is it's an ashless oil, it doesn't create deposits when it burns. Very little in terms of cylinder wear on these engines running this oil. #3 is the TCP (tricresyl phosphate) antiwear additive. It prevents scoring on the camshaft and acts as an antirust agent as well. #4 is the level of protection at high temperature. Even above 275 degrees oil temperature, the extreme pressure capability of the oil is well over 100,000 psi. Never had an EJ but that's what I would run for oil. Also runs excellent in big block Mopar engines and 1950s Early Hemi engines. Compatible with leaded fuel as well.
Thanks for the informative comment. I never even thought of using aircraft oil in a car engine. Another alternative to the Aeroshell oil (due to price/availability) you recommend is Shell Rotella T6 5W-40. Admin Tuning recommends this oil "because it keeps a more consistent oil temperature and is less volatile."
This was the most informative and easy to understand video on engine issues. I feel like I want to break down an engine now. Great job dude
I may be biased but this is one of my favorite series yall have done!!! Much love donut team

Everybody here happy to get the guys wrenching again. For the record my favorite videos are the in-depth histories on specific stuff and those old engineering explained type videos like "how does nitrous work" etc. But this is still super cool 😎 keep all of it rolling
As a Subaru owner and tuner, the best thing for these cars is an oil pressure and oil temperature gauge. Monitoring those and having a good E85 tune will keep one of these engines alive indefinitely
They def need to do some forum research get a pickup, cylinder 4 cooling mod, iag oil pan or a bigger one, and a new radiator, plus what you said. I don’t think they’ve done enough research which can lead them to blow up those cars
As someone who currently owns two sti's, the best thing to do is to go easy on the poor ej257 haha. But yes, oil is top priority on these engines. I just changed my oil at 2000 miles recently becasue it smelt a little burnt. Take no chances and change the oil!
@@sti_trooper_1527 you’re wasting your time with the cooling mod. Go straight for a killer b oversized sump with baffled pickup, run 10w 60 supercar oil. Break in for 1000kms or 20 heat cycles, monitor bearing wear on oil change. Then send it afterwards cause your ej will be fine.
Beat on any motor freshly built with tight tolerance and no heat and it’ll be same result every time
You do not need those things; By AVOIDING RED-LINING THE RPMS AND CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL PROPERLY AND REGULARLY.

This is the right take - if one has any interest in tracking a WRX/STI, oil/cooling is very important
Absolutely, and even then you need to be mindful of it.
I watched something similar happen to Pastrana, who keep in mind, was driving a Vermont SportsCar built STi. Baffles, dry sump, all that. If anyone knows how to build a Subaru it's those folks. He went off near our spectator point at a rally, and the car was leaning over a bit to one side in the ditch. Once a sweep vehicle came through and got him pulled out, he immediately went hard on the throttle once the engine turned over. Sure enough, about a minute later exhaust sounds in the distance abruptly stopped. Then 20 min later he came walking back up the road with his co-driver Beavis. Asked them if they went off again "nope, pretty sure we blew it up". Word got out later when the mechanics and engineers got a chance to tear into it that it was an oil starvation issue, likely due to the car sitting on its side in the ditch and then immediately given WOT.
I think there's a video here on UA-cam as part of Subaru's "Launch Control" series that has in car footage of that debacle playing out.
@@scotchbingeington6761 I mean an oiling failure is just how Subie engines die. You can (and should) do all the prevention you want but ultimately that's still usually what will go when you break it.

It was good to see more real engine work being done again. I used to watch more but then began to ignore a lot of your episodes not realizing you sold the company. Anyway good follow up on failure. I feel better knowing all my break in practices weren't a waste of time after all. So many times people ragged on me saying pro racers and mechanics didn't bother with all the directions and fussing around. I just wanted to try to fully understand how everything works together. And for me it seems like it worked out well. After 45 years I've learned anything I really wanted to with the confidence to pull it off when I couldn't afford to swing big more than once. Plus I survived because of that understanding sometimes when I probably shouldn't have.
Pro racers do in fact break in engines before pushing them on the track. Anyone that thinks otherwise, is completely clueless.
@@aaronthomas6155 I know that they do I've been around racing since front engine rails like Don Garlits in the early 60s. Then Can Am and road racing at B.I.R., Riverside, and Pamona. But most people I've known just didn't understand what was really going on beyond back yards and stock cars. I was just more interested and lucky to have such good influences around. Years in a machine shop really made me see things on another level too.
Always really impressed with your segments. You bring technical ability and entertainment to the max. This was informative and fun to watch. Awesome F'in Teardown, keep up the good work!
Number 3 always goes first. As soon as I heard Rodney Knocking, I knew it was at number 3.
You can prevent this in future by fitting a baffled sump. You can buy inserts reasonably cheaply, and they're pretty straightforward so easy enough to fabricate if you're so inclined.
Just been there and done a gearbox replacement on my 06 Hawkeye
The frustration is real when the car is fun to drive and once is fixed you can't help but floor it and enjoy the rumbling sound followed with a whistle between shifts 🔥🔥🔥 I hope i can meet you guys one day and talk about our rodeos! Saludos amigos!
Before he even cracked open the block, I told myself, “spun bearing” from the sound. Been there twice myself. If they would have run it at all under those conditions the block would have blown up.
So did I, it's almost like Subarus are a bad buy
@@rysterstech or improperly rebuilt
@@rysterstech bad assembly, not a design fault
I have now a suzuki vitara with spun bearing in its four conrods. They were kinda fused and broke in half.i
@@ollie-kc6nj engine was pretty clean inside, maybe the previous shop didn't change the oil pump.
This is the kind of content I’m here for and why I fell in love this this channel back in the Science Garage days!
This was incredibly informative and entertaining. Thank you Donut for the great content!
Love this kind of content. Great to see a teardown of an engine step by step to determine what's actually going wrong in a way that someone who isn't a mechanic (me) can easily understand. Donut never disappoints.
Jermiah and Donut team. I do appreciate the efforts you made to make this simple 14 minutes vid.
I can see in your faces the sweat and hours you had to make this lovely investigation.
Thank you guys and i do believe everyone do agree on that and for this reason we admire watching your contents. 👏🏻💓
Brilliant video, thank you. I LOVE Subarus (had many) but own an Evo 9 just because I don't want to have to rebuild a boxer engine... So over complicated. I think most people watching knew it was going to be a spun bearing but was an enjoyable video, thanks.
This was an excellent breakdown of which parts were still working properly and finding the cause of the issue!
Been rebuilding an old Beamer and the biggest thing I fear is that the engine blows. So I just want to say tht this video has been one of the most informative I’ve ever seen on cars. I love this channel for things like hilow and up to speed but I gotta say it’s taught me so much just in this video. Good shit guys
I just love how all the comments in the last video were about blowing up the head gasket ... Donut doesn't disappoint their fan base 🤣😅🤣 Cheers guys and keep up the good stuff
Great video Gents. Jeremiah, your expertise is greatly appreciated.
Great to see these technical videos on Donut. Not just silly game shows.
Not gonna lie, I’ve been waiting for hi-low to return!
I love this style of video buy I appreciate all the editing that went into it to make it digestible for non car people too. Great work Donut, more like this please (blow up more engines hahaha)
Wow... That was great! Super in depth but incredible editing for pace... Wow
Very user friendly approach and explanation, keep it up boys!
Such a great choice of cars for the new season 😫
Having worked on a bunch of ej255 and and ej253, it was cool to see you guys tearing one apart. I gotta say though, skipping the break-in period could have easily contributed to the oil starvation. Theres a number of pinhole sized passageways on these motors, which more than likely could have been obstructed by shavings from the newly rebuilt motor. I know you guys will rebuild it and I'm looking forward to watching those videos, but that's my 2 cents on what could've happened
right, why would you take it to the track with less than 200 miles on it..
@@tdizzlefoshizzle150 Right and they wanna blame the car. Sucks to suck.
@@yohan1902 would be nice if the engine was nearly half as reliable as a k series or something so they wouldn't need a new engine to beign with. look at all their other builds, turbo miata etc., never replaced the engine because it blew up and big surprise the wrx was the first
Literally EVERY engine and even motors need to be broke in. They probably didn't want to take the time to do it or were up against tight scheduling. But as soon as he said they rebuilt and took it to the track no break in period crossed my mind. Combine that with the poor oil pan design is a perfect combination for failure. Good thing they got the bread.
@SockJellyYum Thank God someone has a lick of sense. No cylinder 4 cooling mod, no killer B pan/pickup, no break in, absolutely nothing. These dudes got the result any engine builder would expect them to get with the actions they took.
I am watching Dount Media to learn more about mechanics and cars and this is exactly what I come for
This is a great channel. The fact the crew has a varied level of experience with mechanics really helps me learn. They explain things well and in a basic way so people of all levels can learn. Awesome stuff
Very informative. I love this stuff!
This was an amazing video and I loved how technical it got! Please keep similar content coming, love you Donut! :)
Love the detailed walk-thru. You guys definitely need to blow more things up!
At my workplace we have a thing for safety that would have prevented the finger smash. I forget the name is but in short 3 points of contact are required when transferring items.
What a fantastic video! Really well explained and was interesting to the end. The oil starvation problem makes me think we might see a dry sump episode on hi-lo?
Awesome video and loved the in depth troubleshooting. Do I ever see myself going that deep down the rabbit hole of fixing my own stuff? Nope but now I feel more informed if i ever run across a situation like this.
Being blessed with these high- production diagnostic videos is the happiest I ever am to see a Donut video.
I'm sorry that that sentence reads so poorly, I didn't know how else to say that I love these mechanic-heavy hands-on episodes.
dont apologize. People who judge others over grammar are sad people.
This was fantastic. Such a great breakdown.
