This is maybe my favourite episode of What's in My Bag yet. I have always been an Ethan Hawke fan, but as a musician with an immense respect and value for music history and the bigger story behind the songwriters, Ethan's knowledge, understanding, passion, and tastes impress and entertain me beyond end.
Ethan is a bad ass and genuinely nice guy. I met him in the 90s when he every teen girl's heartthrob. I had guessed he was pompous and a pretty boy. Nope. This guy is the real deal, true blue man.
He knows what he likes and knows the history. How does someone get there? Curiosity in not just about music, but life in general. There is genius and authenticity in every genre of music, all you gotta do is know when you hear it. It takes time to cultivate it.
I feel like i needed this, hate all the pop country that has taken over my generation these days but I KNOW theres good country out there, just never knew how to find it. Politics aside, as an avid NFL fan...Kap was not as good as people say. He actually regressed into a mediocre at best QB once defenses figured him out and took what he was good at away from him. It inevitably weakens his protest. He didn't do it when he was a starting QB with a chance at championships. It came after he was exiled in shame to the bench and as a dissatisfied employee. You can't help but feel there is some disingenuous motive there to remain relevant while kind of hiding behind virtue.
I just listened to the Hamilton Leithauser album he picked at 4:02. It is a really, really solid album. It's like Pet sounds (Beach Boys album) intertwined with a western movie. Great recommendation!

More of a blues lover than country myself but I checked out Blaze Foley after Ethan's biopic came out and I trust this man's taste in anything. I do appreciate old school country storytelling and it seems like he appreciates the difference between sincere honest country music and rubbish "yee haw, pick up trucks and whisky" songs that pass for country these days.
I hadn't heard of most of this artists as its not my taste, but damn he made me want to check them out. This & the Jason Mantzoukas episode share a similar enthusiasm.
