"FUCK off Johnny Utah, turn my pages BITCH" The amount of hilarious lines surrounded by pure stress and adrenaline is great, watched Whiplash for the first time just 10 years after it released and it hit me like a snare, amazing film and personal 10/10
This movie is a student horror movie-- as in I’m sure many people went thru similar anxiety as students. Mine was a very intense critic/mentor in architecture school. He dragged me through hell!
When I first watched this I couldn’t finish it because it reminded me too much of this absolutely horrible maths teacher I had for a year and a half. She would shout at us for all the little things, constantly tease the class but of course couldn’t take the same back and would be extremely bipolar and just switch up from day to day. Also picked favourites. She made so many kids cry. Fuck you mrs weaver
As a pianist and percussionist throughout childhood, high school, and college, I’m incredibly thankful and lucky that I never had a music instructor that was anything like this, unlike quite a few other musicians I’ve known or experiences I’ve seen. Thank GOD
Unreal.. Whiplash is one of those films that would be deserving of a film about the making of the film. And not just like an easy, little, low cost documentary. but a full feature film in 20 years looking back on just how incredible of a feat it was.. a rookie/novice writer and production team work with two, destine-to-be A-list stars, on a very tight schedule and budget. Yet manage to create a cinematic masterpiece. thats a script in and of itself.
This film felt like it hit so close to home. I wanted to throw the remote at the screen in anger at times. Fletcher was me, my mind screaming at myself. My mind did such a good job I’ve started to really hate myself and see myself as an unwanted unworthy small insignificant thing. Not just for my own pathetic attempts at filmmaking but as a person. My loneliness just grew worse and worse aided by my further self hatred with my mind screaming at me. I love this film and it’s been a huge inspiration in my continual attempts at filmmaking. I can only hope one day I can fully silence the screaming in my head. I’ve been working on getting better but it’s a slow process.
@@MinorMotionPicture it's a film that hits pretty close to home for most creatives or artists. The constant drive to do better but also feeling like what you're doing isn't good enough. Or that everyone tells you to succeed you need to essentially ruin your life to get it
Appreciate it! And yeah, I think this movie just hits right for creatives, artists, and people with high ambition. But I also like how it shows the dangers of achievement as well
Just to be clear here, you CAN NOT slam your fist through a drum head, that is fiction. Drum heads are TOUGH AF. They are designed to take a beating. You are 99.99999% more likely to break your hand than even putting a small dent with your fist on a snare head. Looks great on screen? Sure, its a paper head on screen. Great movie, but Damien, dont lie bro lol.
It’s definitely possible because I have done it before but it is dependent on the type of drum head. Since it was jazz it was most likely a single ply head which would definitely hurt but in times of extreme frustration it’s definitely possible.
@@MONOMYTH1well yoU are part of that .00001 of probability lol. Just kidding, you are right one ply, specially if its already a little beat up can definitely break. Still not easy though, and definitely not as easy as the movie lol.
19 days of shooting for a movie with topnotch performance, talking about efficiency. this taught me few things, when you have tight budget and short deadline, make sure the scrip is so good that even big shot won't let it pass, make the setup and lighting simple so all you need to focus on is performance, shoot the thing, the editing job is already half down in the screenplay. simple techniques work in wonders
J.K. Simmon's made this film. What a performance. You cant say J.K. Simmons doesnt get roles or isnt a well known/recognized actor. but it's unfortunate how few roles he's had that allow him to display his full acting capabilities. id say no film has allowed him to display his acting skills at the level he was able to in Whiplash.
the speed of the production totally shows through in the tension held throughout the film. Quickly paced, but also not. Excellent movie, and quite rare of this caliber these days
It's so interesting to hear that there was initially more backstory established for Fletcher and he decided to cut it out. I literally always wondered why they didn't spend more time showing him in his home life or what gave him the motivation to be so tough
JK Simmons was no stranger to the college music grind either - he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Mens' Music Fraternity at the University of Montana.
For a movie that's all dialogue, and a budget of only 3.3 million, it's really not that fast. MOW's and TV movies are shot in 12-15 days, and usually have a budget of 1 to 2 million. I shot an action movie last year in 18 days. And budgets are only getting tighter and tighter since the strike. Hour long episodic is usually shot in 10 days, but some shows now shoot in 6-7. It's awful.
That's fair! I would say that too, but it's hard to explain, and I wanted a nice catchy title 😅 But I think what makes this one challenging is the musical aspect of it. They were really trying to be detailed about how they were shooting the drum scenes and that seems like a headache of a technical challenge. And it's not even normal music either; it's jazz, which means you really have to be more detailed with how you're presenting it. So normally I wouldn't really point out how fast this was shot but the technicality of it seems anxiety inducing. Which I'm sure is the case with any shoot, like your 18 day action film shoot! Sounds insane
This is an awesome video. I had no idea it started out as a short. Anyone know what the budget for the original short was? I’ve found $3m for the feature but would love to know the short budget if it’s out there
@@rezaVfx this one is challenging though because of the live instrumentation aspect of it. Especially when you're playing jazz, you don't want to mess that up 😅
A lot of them use longer takes and are more dialogue based though. This movie has a lot of coverage, and pretty crazy music sequences. This movie’s production is really a miracle how it all came together
