This explains it. “After graduating college in 1995, Mantzoukas was granted a Watson Fellowship, traveling throughout North Africa and the Middle East studying religious and transcendental music for nearly two years.”
Yeah he talks about it on his episode of WTF with Marc Maron. He admits he had no idea what he was doing lol and almost seemed surprised that he did looking back on it. Mantzoukas is an interesting dude. He is also deathly allergic to eggs which is like an insanely rare allergy and includes both raw and cooked eggs.
New Groove Vinyl Club Im sure not a lot of people, believe him either. And they likely put his life in their idiotic hands. working as a waitress in California, like 40% of the customers said they had an allergy....and many just didn’t like something...stuff like “I’m allergic to gluten”...we go through the whole, process of fixing the dinner on a separate plate....orders a very much gluten cake for dinner. Or I’m allergic to tomamos....”makes them a special salad after spending 10 minutes decontaminating the kitchen”...then orders a pasta with tomato sauce...of course we took them all seriously, but I know having a friend who has celiac people often don’t. I can’t imagine how terrifying it would be to be that allergic to eggs. I’d probably eat only at vegan places OR just order shit like steak or lobster. Eggs are so much fucking stuff.
So, i seen your comment and thought "hmm. I wonder what that's about." having seen a good deal of these. But man- you are right. Next level on this one. :)
This man could do a music podcast and I would listen to every single episode. Hilarious with a huge depth of knowledge on things I know nothing about. He's the best!
you should check out the WTF episode he's on. (the Marc Maron podcast) He talks about when he was in college and traveled to around researching music around the world.
Jason got a scholarship to study music globally and it shows. The specific topic was like music and bringing people spirituality and godliness or something.
I remember seeing Jason in the early 00s at the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre and thinking he was one of the most brilliant improv performers I'd ever seen. So glad he's been able to have a long and successful acting career.
I can't believe I almost didn't click on this one because it wasn't a musician. What a fun ride. Hats off to the Amoeba people who edit these things too!
My son was watching this - Im a lifelong movie and vinyl collector - heard 3 seconds of the Electric Phin Band and was like - what's THAT? Instant cop. Great to get hipped to something deep you did not yet know.
He went past it very quickly, but I think he has a valid point about vocals as an instrument being more important than the actual lyrics of a song. If you listen to shoegaze music, and a great deal of music that is inspired by it currently, very often you can't even tell what they are saying. The vocals are very low in the mix and colored with reverb and other effects to give them a sort of ethereal, atmospheric quality, and they become just another part of the whole sonic picture. Many artists do not publish their lyrics on the album sleeves because they would prefer listeners to be moved emotionally by the music in its entirety rather that just the text. I used to get frustrated when I opened a new record and there were no lyrics printed, but now I understand why artists do that and I'm on board for the most part.
I always go and check out the full albums after watching these, and even thought I think I have a pretty wide range in my musical tastes, this one really expanded my horizons. Khuun Narin is awesome, and reminds me a lot of Kruangbin which is havily influenced by Thai Music.
I was literally switching back and forth from this to Apple Music, listening to the albums he recommended. They are really good. Especially the Hop Along and My Bloody Valentine records. Both bands are new to me.
MBV is an epic band as you well know by now. They're early music is surprisingly poppy. It's fascinating to hear their musical evolution from those early days to their shoegaze albums. Seen them live twice on their 1st comeback tour, once in San Francisco & then at Coachella Fest.. I'll never forget lying in the field at the edge of the crowd watching the stunning starlit sky at night w/their mesmerizing, psychedelic music playing. Good times!
Also another fun fact after graduating college he was granted a watson fellowship and spent two years travelling throughout north africa and the middle east studying and recording religious and transcendental music. Oh, and he didn't just audition for the blueman group, he had 6 auditions and callbacks - they were actually seriously interested in him, not only did he audition but they asked him back multiple times - and he probably had a good shot, he chose not to finish the full audition process so he could travel and record music from abroad (the blueman group didn't turn him down, it was his choice). He chose to spend 7 months in morocco studying and recording gnawa music instead of finishing the audition process. Saying he auditioned for the blueman group is a huge understatement. He has more experience with really obscure music than most musicians.
I love love love How Did This Get Made so clicked on this -- had no idea Jason Mantzoukas had such incredible taste in music, I got a lot of good recommendations from this video. Will point out that Zouks is, as always, wearing a white shirt and jeans. AS ALWAYS.
I would die so happily if Jason Mantzoukas starts a podcast with Gregg Proops about music. Two absolutely hilarious comedians, who I never would have expected to be such bottomless audiophile treasure troves.
I often watch these, cus it's nice to know what musicians the musicians you like like (weird sentence), but every so often you click on one of these and you don't know the guy but maybe he has good taste, so you hope for the best but then it turns out he went from Konono no1 to Love Actually to Destroyer in like no time at all, and also he's really lovable and it kinda just made my day.
I am astounded, surprised and delighted by how eloquent and well thought out he appears here. My girlfriend thinks he’s just “Rafi” in real life so I’m glad there’s videos like this to show he’s a real person with genuine interests and passions.
Jason on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is utterly amazing! Honest Jon's love, and amazing other picks. Damn, this might be my favorite "What's in My Bag," ever.
This is one of my favorite episodes of What's In My Bag! Jason Mantzoukas has such an interesting and unique taste in music (Hey, I love cassettes too!). Yay for a fellow My Bloody Valentine music fan! ❤His picks for TV shows (yay Deadwood!) and movies (Howard the Duck "the first Marvel movie!") are awesome!!! I even learned about some music and movies I'll be checking out because of this video! 😍😍😍
I've watched every episode of WIMB and this is hands down my all time favourite. Jason Mantzoukas, what darling soul you are. Prepare to be googled Sir x
i wish this guy had his own show .... NF or youtube or anything .... this guys GOLD in everything he does. anytime he does a 1 off on any tv show i go check it out asap
Honestly was thinking "not my cup of tea, but these are some incredible picks." Then he pulled out Van Morrison and I thought I should comment, then he pulled out Deadwood...one of my favorite ever shows...with a top 5 quote "life is one vile task after another." Then as Im commenting he grabs love actually....best episode ever.
Holy crap... I'm in love with this single episode. I absolutely hate everything he spoke about, but I just couldn't stop watching and listening and now I want to go to Amoeba and spend my money.... wtf.... thank you?
I saw this so many times over the years and now I just realized that he didn’t talked about all the records that was in his bag. You can see covers of more albums on the sofa. I’m curious about what else he bought that day. In 13:40 you can see Mm.. Food by MF Doom and in 9:06 is another one
That was the most enlightening What's in My Bag I've ever seen... what a list I just made from this. Thank you Jason! And anyone reading this should really --, nay, MUST listen to How Did This Get Made podcast with Jason, Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael... hilarious

I love Jason so much.
Fricken hippy ! 😅 I loved Jason on the 99 ! Noice ! Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿

Jason is great. Any Podcast he is on is made so much better by his energy
This dude is a riot!
Agreed! Love the way it was put together.
For sure, my man
You’re right, I saved it so I can go back to find these groups.
This guy is putting Amoeba to work. Sheeeeeeit.
Raust you gotta listen to his podcast, how did this get made
He gutted their inventory, haha. Couldn't fit any more in the bag was when he stopped. My man

god bless the editors for this episode, you nailed it!
Love the "Dave Anderson" Google Search LOL!
So, i seen your comment and thought "hmm. I wonder what that's about." having seen a good deal of these. But man- you are right. Next level on this one. :)
@@carloroca1531 That was my favorite part
Just give him a key to the store and a monthly music workshop to where he just sits and educates whoevers interested in learning new music.
Jason is one of the smartest people in comedy, and I could listen to him talk about pop culture for days. The man talks substance always
i knew nothing of his intellect and only knew his wackiness, glad to be surprised
This man could do a music podcast and I would listen to every single episode. Hilarious with a huge depth of knowledge on things I know nothing about. He's the best!
He does one about terrible movies called How Did This Get Made with Paul Scheer it's comedy gold.
CBB Radio!
Was dying laughing at the Dave Anderson edit. Well done. The editing deserves an award
i cant stop laughing
This was an incredible episode, what a legend
I had no idea the Zouk was so into music. This is great.
you should check out the WTF episode he's on. (the Marc Maron podcast) He talks about when he was in college and traveled to around researching music around the world.
breadbutt My dream degree, too bad there is no way to make a living doing it.
Jason got a scholarship to study music globally and it shows. The specific topic was like music and bringing people spirituality and godliness or something.
I love seeing the editor get into Jason's silliness.
He actually looks just like his musical taste. It's awesome.
I love that he artistically directed what clips just proves how musically and visually creative this weirdo is. What up jerks
Hey, thanks!
Jason's music taste is one of the most unique I've ever seen.
Hats off to this guy for selecting such an eclectic and amazing mix from especially non-western countries. Thank you thank you!
My son was watching this - Im a lifelong movie and vinyl collector - heard 3 seconds of the Electric Phin Band and was like - what's THAT? Instant cop. Great to get hipped to something deep you did not yet know.
Jason studied world music in college. Of course he's gonna have exquisite taste.
Always thought he was hilarious, but kind of fell in love with him here.
Right!!!
How well-rounded Mantzoukas is, is just unfair.
If you want to be cool stop whining about fairness and start being cool.

Top 5 Episode. Fantastic! Glad you got through all that post

That’s awesome! Thanks for the feedback. Happy listening.
Best edited WIMB yet, added an extra element to the video
The Dave Anderson joke was the perfect length. Couple beats too long. Arrogant, even. Perfect.
I was literally switching back and forth from this to Apple Music, listening to the albums he recommended. They are really good. Especially the Hop Along and My Bloody Valentine records. Both bands are new to me.
Ha same

So great. Please have Jason back every month!
Honestly was hesitant to watch since he’s not a musician even tho I love him in 99, but this is one of the dopest WIMB ever hands down!
He studied music in college and plays the drums. He auditioned for the Blue Man Group back in the day. He definitely knows what he's talking about!
Katie you made my year with that fact
Also another fun fact after graduating college he was granted a watson fellowship and spent two years travelling throughout north africa and the middle east studying and recording religious and transcendental music. I wonder if he walked into the store saying, "I'm going to put your editing team to the test!"
It certainly felt like it.
Jason Mantzoukas, what a catch.
I love love love How Did This Get Made so clicked on this -- had no idea Jason Mantzoukas had such incredible taste in music, I got a lot of good recommendations from this video. Will point out that Zouks is, as always, wearing a white shirt and jeans. AS ALWAYS.
What a gem of a human. Knowledge. Diversity. Silliness. Love it.
When he picked Gal Costa my mind was blown. Jason listening to brazilian music makes me happy.
I have always loved mantzoukas....THis made me love him more
Good to know I'm not the only one here to praise the editor. Good job, my son...good job. Now you can rest.
I would die so happily if Jason Mantzoukas starts a podcast with Gregg Proops about music.

Very nice episode. And great to see the reference to Gal Costa. She's really a queen in Brazilian music.

Wow he’s got great taste. I got so many good recs from this.
Jason Mantzoukas is such a brilliant improvisor that he can improvise with a bag, literally.
#AmoebaMusic
Jason Mantzoukas always seemed like a spiritually open-minded but overall crazy insane dude and this video just confirms it 🤣
Holy moly, Mr Mantzoukas is my spirit animal. Unbelievable.
Jason Mantzoukas is the funniest human being on the planet.
I see his name on anything and I click.
Records are cool too, I guess.

You know what would be fun? To see the outtakes for this video. You just know Zouks said some really funny stuff that didn't make the final edit.
I don't know how Zouks does it. He just slots into literally any format. What an icon.
I died at the Dave Anderson image search. Dead.
this is my favorite episode. he reminds me so much of myself and its great to see such sincere, unbridled enthusiasm for his picks.
I like to think the editors just have a movie night together when having to get clips from the films the guest picks.
I've watched every episode of WIMB and this is hands down my all time favourite. Jason Mantzoukas, what darling soul you are. Prepare to be googled Sir x

This is the best What's In My Bag, hands down. Super interesting picks and great presentation. Also the editing is top shit.
Hey, thanks! And thank Jacob.
Jason Mantzoukas listening to MBV is such a funny thought to me lmao
your taste in music is exquisite - thank you. never heard of most of this and it's all absurdly interesting.
Honestly was thinking "not my cup of tea, but these are some incredible picks." This is firmly one of the best episodes.
Alright! The best and the most interesting What's in my bag!
It's weird hearing him talk about music instead of magic and/or pillow sex.
What if we spread a rumour that _as a snack_ he eats little pieces of shit.
Or quoting his dad's law commercials
The Sneezing Picture Second Harvest!!! If you dont know what I mean look it up. It's worth it haha.
This is the best episode yet. Its going to take weeks to get through all this new shit to check out.
hey nong man! I forgot he has an eclectic musical taste. I think he studied ethnomusicology or something.
yeah, they talked about it when he was on Marc Maron's podcast "WTF"
breadbutt ah yea I listened to that
yummyjackalmeat don't say or something man, own that shit, hey nong man xo
I remember I learned of his college music journey when he was on Kevin Polak's Chat Show and was so intrigued and fascinated.
I heard he studied your mom
This guy is awesome. Frigging all over the place.
I am going to post on this particular video, because he was a delight.
So fun listening to this guy. Know him from The Good Place. Such great recomendos too!
His suggestions were all absolutely great. I didn't even know big thief had a recent record. Best one yet.
Holy crap... I'm in love with this single episode. I absolutely hate everything he spoke about, but I just couldn't stop watching and listening and now I want to go to Amoeba and spend my money.... wtf.... thank you?
This guy "owned the game"...level master.
Jason Mantzoukas, thank you for all your awesome picks. You are the best comedian of all time.
God, knowing his favorite record of all time is Loveless by My Bloody Valentine makes me an even bigger fan of this guy.
The video editor got a good chuckle out of me with that “Dave Anderson” google image search cut
Just when you thought you couldn’t love Mantzoukas more
this is almost definitely the best episode wow I love Jason now
Is there anyway to LOVE this episode?
what a genuine, beautiful human being.
One of the guests that I wish had a weekly episode.
I love how he listens to different genres and from all over the world too.
None of them obvious choices.
Love him
I've never been more attracted to someone so odd. And that voice, Ugh. Too good.
This is the best episode. Jason Mantzoukas crushed it.
I went to Jason's UCB show "Soundtracks" and he was going through my ipod and laughing. I wear that as a badge of honor to this day.
Wow, I've watched lots of these and this may be my favorite episode yet.
I love this man. Also, whoever edited this video deserves an award.
Jason, and his varied, wonderfully bizarre recommendations, are awesome.
Great episode
This is my favorite episode now.
I saw this so many times over the years and now I just realized that he didn’t talked about all the records that was in his bag. You can see covers of more albums on the sofa. I’m curious about what else he bought that day.
In 13:40 you can see Mm.. Food by MF Doom and in 9:06 is another one
This is probably the best What's in my bag I've seen. Bravo Jason and the special effects team who enhanced the vid.👍
Jason is a funny dude. I see through his musical taste where his comedy comes from
I came to amoeba after watching WIMB and was not disappointed! Browsed for hours.
That was the most enlightening What's in My Bag I've ever seen... what a list I just made from this. Thank you Jason! And anyone reading this should really --, nay, MUST listen to How Did This Get Made podcast with Jason, Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael... hilarious
