  • BMW X5M F85/86 Oil Change DIY with Liqui Moly Ceratec Review. Can it Reduce or slow your oil consumption?
    This is a quick DIY on how to do an oil change on the F15/16 F85/86 BMW X5 X6 with M models with S63Tu and N63tu. I also used Ceratec with my previous oil change. So after 5,000 miles, how has it been holding up? I can honestly say it reduced my oil consumption?

    Thanks for posting! Recently got an X5M and one of the guys at the dealership said I should be able to perform my own oil changes and after watching the video I think I'll give it a try. Your video is very detailed but any suggestions of things to look out for when changing the oil for the first time? Thanks!

    I've been trying out different oil brands and grades in the last 12 months on a 2017 X5 xDrive35i, namely Castrol Edge 0w40, Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40, Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0w30. I've been using LM Ceratec once too, also LM MoS2 on the next oil change. Next one I'll try is Motul Specific 5w30 rated for BMW LL01-FE. After I shall be only be running an SAE 40 grade as my N55 gains more mileage a higher viscosity clamps down oil consumption and provides a thicker oil film. In over 25k mi I never added any oil during the course of several oil changes.

    Thanks for the video. As I am at an inflection of keeping my X5M long term or moving on to something else I am considering doing my own maintenance. Not so much as a cost saving on routine stuff but also time savings vs fitting into dealerships timeframe. Do you use 2 cans of the Ceratec every 30k miles since it says its good for 5L of oil? Im at 58k mile on my 2018 and not sure if I should keep or move on. Once the kids are in college its 911 time.

    Interesting to see you are using 5W40 on a X5M. Any reason to pick 5w40? Specifically why 40?
    With high compression and high RPM , I'm surprised you opted to use 40.
    Can you share your reasoning with us please.

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  2 роки тому +2

      5w-40 was rated with BMW LL0-1 requirements.
      While the OEM requirements recommended is 5w-30. There was nothing wrong with going to 5w-40. Personally I think the high heat these engines generate the 40 weight should minimize chances of evaporation/oil burn.
      Liqui Moly makes a 5w-30 that’s LL0-4 but I’m assuming it’s more fuel economy. Either way the changes is minimal. Cold start protection is more crucial.

    Another point.. my dad was a mechanic and always taught us when changing oil to not use ramps, but a jack (you can use a cinder block for safety in case of jack failure) so once the drain plugs removed and it begins draining, you let the jack down so the car is level and drains better. He said on ramps the engine's at a big angle and old oil will pool in the pan. Is the X5 designed differently to completely drain while at such an angle on the ramps?

    • @mikepgh09

      Ramps front, jack rear vehicle level and still raised. Use proper jack stands at the rear not cinder blocks as they can fail

    Here is my concern adding additive to my f10 M5 engine oil. Should there be any kind of catastrophic failure, BMW usually does an oil analysis and I do not want them or my warranty company to turn down repair based on fact that I put the additive. Believe the car manual mentions no additive.

  • @KalchykDen

    I’m so confused with these bmw recommendations.
    I noticed that on older bmw f85 2015-2016 it doesn’t mention BMW LongLife 01 FE and in my 2018 it mentions that. My first oil change during my ownership I poured Liqui Molly 5w30 and I feel like it’s too thin cuz I had to add quart of oil at around 1500 miles.
    I was trying to find 0w40 oil with BMW LL 01 FE but there’s nothing on the shelves with these bmw recommendations.
    Is this Liqui Molly 5w40 in this video would be safe to use on my 2018 f85 even though it’s not LL01 FE approved? Should I even pay attention to that?
    One thing I’m worried about is rod bearings. I know if oil is too thick then rod bearings doesn’t get proper lubrication and could spin on the rod itself.
    I’m pretty sure I’m just overthinking…
    What do you think?

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  2 роки тому

      The 5w 30 is the only formula with the LL-01 FE rating but as you said. You will probably notice more oil burn. Yes, you will be fine with LL-01 5w-40

    • @pacadet
      @pacadet Рік тому

      It’s out of warranty. Run LL-01.
      BMW began spec’ng LL-01 *FE* on the S63 in 2017 for CAFE requirements. No other reason. There are such limited choices of good oil with this specification (which again, is solely for fuel economy compliance) that I don’t care about it, even with a service contract.
      My “new” ‘17 F85 will be getting the Valvoline Euro 5w-40. It’s solid oil, LL-01 approved, and available everywhere for cheap. I’ve always added a dose of MOS2 for all my oil changes in all my cars, so I’ll continue doing that. I’ll splurge for the “M” specific oil filter from FCPEuro, but my hope is if the engine ever needs work, Carmax’s MaxCare plan is going to care a lot less about it not being “FE” oil and more about it being done on time.
      tl;dr: the S63 was designed for LL-01. LL-01 FE was later spec’d to meet fuel economy requirements and for no other reason. You have no warranty to worry about, run LL-01. If you decide, for some reason, to stick with LL-01 FE, run Motul Specific. It’s the least bad of the FE oils (HTHS of 3.4).
