As an MK fan, I’ve heard all these anecdotes 100 times, but am always keen to hear them again. He’s a living legend and his latest album is magnificent.
Don't think this country has produced anyone better than Mark Knopfler he's an amazing singer/songwriter/musician, great in Dire Straits and now as a Solo artist. Absolutely love his solo records he tells such great stories with beautiful melodies and he is always so down to earth and interesting to listen to.
I think Chris is remembering a preview of Dire Straits tour in 1985 when they played in Israel. Paula Yates interviewed Mark as a special on the tube. They were on camels. Not actually playing in the desert, but they were there. I'm 59 and have been lucky enough to have lived through this guys career. Mark, you have enriched my life with your incredible music. I owe you such gratitude. And that Mandela 70th birthday gig at Wembley , my God, what a performance that was. If you haven't seen it, please do. Thanks, guys, and thank you Chris.
I've watched it many times, as well as the first time it aired on MTV in '85! It was such a huge thing back then for every DS fan, as you know. Saw DS in Stockholm that year and also in '92. ❤ I'm 57 and got hocked on Mark in '79 when Sultans broke here in Sweden. 😊🎶🎸
I remember that! I was a HUGE fan at the time and that TV special was... special :D Still listen to DS now, and the beginning of "Single Handed Sailor" from the Communique album has been my ringtone for about ten years.
Chris did a great job interviewing Mark here. First heard Dire Straits as a teen in the 80s and have loved Mark's music ever since. A brilliant tasteful and classy songwriter and musician. One of our best!
I got the first album on import in Australia, the best thing I had ever heard. But I couldn't understand how the radio stations hadn't picked it up, it took 6 months. Such a talented and good hearted man with his feet firmly planted on the ground. Thanks Mark.
This is the best interview with MK I’ve seen, nice one Chris! I went to Christie’s for the auction preview 2 days before the sale, I found myself standing next to Mark, I still can’t believe it happened. His music, well, I don’t really have the words to describe what it means to me.
We all get older, we all start to get slower, we all know that one we will have to stop, but we don't all get to be legends like Mark Knopfler and leave behind a legacy that will still be loved and listened too for longer than he ever made music.
My 27yr old son recently learnt to play Sultans of Swing, and has Telegraph Road on his 'Nostalgia' playlist as a result of me playing them in the car :) Telegraph Road is still my all time favourite track!
He certainly inspired me to learn guitar. Night after night, practising...trying to play along with his songs. You Sir, are indeed an inspiration. And arguably the greatest guitarist in history. No question.
Its kind of like being in a room with A MUSICAL GENIUS, YET SO HUMBLE. HE KNOWS HE WAS THE MAIN MAN IN ALCHEMY AND HIS RECORDS CHANGED OUR TIME. However so uplifting to see a true gentleman talking about his early days. Thanks Mark.
Here's another guy who became a guitarist because of the inspiration by MK. There was always a Dire Straits tape playing in our family's Trabant car in the former GDR - God knows where Dad got the tape from as that kind of music was not officially available in the GDR. The first MK concert I went to was in Munich Olympia Hall on the Sailing to Philadelphia tour in 2001, the day after my 22nd birthday. I had gifted the tickets to my Dad for his 50th birthday. By then, I had bought a Fender Stratocaster, not in red but in sunburst with a white scratch plate. Four more concerts followed, Dublin 2010 and 2011 (the latter with MK + Bob Dylan), the blistering hot Bad Kissingen open air in July 2015 and Leipzig 2019. Every time after a concert, I say that this was the best concert I have been to, and every time, the next concert is even better. My favourite MK tune is Sailing to Philadelphia. MK and JT, my two favourite musicians and songwriters, in the same song is just wonderful. I have since ticked a James Taylor concert off my bucket list. Thank you, Mark Knopfler, for writing the soundtrack of my life. I wish you good health, happiness and lots of inspirations to write many more of the songs that we all love. Greetings from Germany.
PS: There is nothing wrong with using elements from earlier songs in new songs; and I interpret this in Mark's music to mirror his life experience as an ongoing process. there are similarities in the chord progressions in Monteleone with A Heart Full of Holes (I believe I remember this correctly) This is even more true on the new album One Deep river. I find elements from Are We in Trouble Now and Dire Straits' Why Worry in Smart Money; and the chorus in Janine reminds me of a chord progression in the Long Road. These things give me such a strong feeling of a reflexion of a lifespan of superb musicianship. I love this!
What a great interview! The most relaxed and funny I've seen Mark in an interview in a long time. Really enjoyed it. Will be tuning in to more of these Virgin clips from now on. Well done Chris and team. BRILLIANT chat👍👍👍
Since I first heard the voice and guitar of Mark Knopfler at the age of sixteen, I began to dream day and night of looking him in the eye. I would stand in front of the poster pasted inside the door of my closet and, looking into his eyes, I would say "Mark are you going out? Come to me?" After 16 years, he entered my shop in Venice 💜 A fairy tale that has come true 🌹 From my book “I will Meet Mark K.”
Don’t need to turn the volume up, this man is the greatest musician I have ever known. So many wonderful compositions, all telling a story often about his life experiences. I listen at least twice a week to the Wembley concert 1985 where he does a sixteen minute version of Tunnel of Love with the most amazing outdo you’ll ever hear. An incredible wordsmith too, a few lines from Romeo and Juliet for starters: “I can’t the talk like their talking on the TV and I can’t do a love song , the way it’s supposed to be, I can’t do everything but I’d do anything for you, can’t do anything but be in love with you” purely genius. Thank you Mark my inspiration my hero.
My guitar hero! Legend! I enjoyed that so much it flew by!! felt like 10 mins lol.... i could listen to Mark for hours on end, but at least when he is not doing interviews i have his music 🙂
MK. Saw him at Sheffield Arena in 92 and again on the Road running tour. I'd love to have met him. Straits head since I was 12. Long live the legend that is Mark Knoofler. Thanks MK
For those who don't know much about this guy check out Telegraph Road live performance from Alchemy tour. Then you'll see just what an absolute genius this guy is. Oh and after that everything else. Fantastic interview from Chris as well here. Love his energy and enthusiasm for this great man
@@CB-xr1eg I think 1986 in Sydney Australia. It was telecasted over Australia and New Zealand. They played 20 nights in a almost a row in Sydney. It was the last show of the Brothers In Arms tour worldwide. They are just in sync with each other and the band improvise really well. It doesn't have Telegraph Road but Tunnel of Love has a great solo. About two hours if not longer. Why Worry is special. Industrial Disease is a another rare song. I wish it was an official release.
I just love Mark Knopfler. I love his Amp story, what he did to the family radio. Now, this is a compliment: as a little girl, my favorite cartoon characters were Mr. Magoo and Elmer Fudd (the rabbit killer), so now, l know why MK is my hero ,not only does he have amazing talent And is a good person But the little child in me Is so happy to watch him ❤❤🌬❌️❤️
It's been a big year for our Mark. He's very old and not that well, but his star power is brighter than ever. A new album, a charity single with every one of the world's best and most famous guitar players, a guitar auction at Christie's with world record prices and a quarter of the profits donated to charity and a six part documentary with Brian Johnson coming soon. Wow!
Love it! Just a plug for Agustin Knopfler’s wonderful UA-cam videos of Mark’s 2019 “Farewell” tour. They basically form my Exercise machine playlist and I’m still working my way through them as they are added. Thanks Mark and the band and Agustin 🎸🍾❤️ ps and Chris!
Lovely interview. We didn't really buy music when I was growing up. I remember my dad buying "Mull Of Kintyre" (we're Scottish. I think he was delighted that Paul McCartney had deigned to live here) and an Abba album (yes, he probably fancied both Bjorn and Benny ;)). It was either taped off the radio or you'd borrow a cassette from the library. I still remember hearing "Private Investigations" on our Hitachi radio/cassette in the kitchen after I'd just brought it home and being stilled in my tracks by its magic. I was about 10. The flamenco. The dour narration. The match strike. Perfect film noir on audio.
I went to see Show of Hands at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill a few months and they opened with Romeo and Juliet and at the end of the song Steve Knightley said "and all I do is kiss you, through the bars of a rhyme......... what an unbelievable lyric. The bas*ard. If I'd written that, I might have come here by helicopter today." As much as I love lots of other bands, including SoH, there is only one artist I absolutely can't do without and that's MK and has been for decades. He possesses a truly rare magic.
I remember spotting his tremor and loss of fluid motion when he did the tribute at the racetrack for Stirling Moss. I keep spotting it here. Really sad as he is such a great player.
I would love to hear Justin Hayward and Mark Knopfler do a duet on their steel guitars...Justin Hayward is rarely listed on great guitar heroes... he's my idol and met him twice up close and personal...once even live in the studios with him on Radio 2 ... Jameson's Guest Request Spot 8th April 1993...6 years earlier at Xmas Party celebrating 20 years Days of Future Passed!!... Yes Mark Knopfler and Justin Hayward should be Knighted!!❣️
I love how MK always looks grumpy and then he surprises everyone with a smile.
❤😂
His great mate John Illsley once said Mark's got to be one of the funniest guy's he's ever come across
"One of the leg-ends of the music business ..."
He reminds me of an auctioneer/ antique chappy on UK television, Philip Serrel I think his name is. Just needs the Rupert Bear scarf!
He has a precious smile. ❤️🎸
The world is a better place due to this fella, MK is a fine gentleman and one hell of a singer, songwriter and guitarist.
As an MK fan, I’ve heard all these anecdotes 100 times, but am always keen to hear them again. He’s a living legend and his latest album is magnificent.
Verdade

The real number 1, legend ever.
Kudos to this interviewer! Very perceptive and Mark is obviously fully engaged in the conversation as are all of us!
Sultans of Swing alone us one of the most important things in my life.

Fell in love with Mark's steel guitar Romeo and Juliet...thank you Mark Knopfler love your sense of humour!!❣️🤣😂
Absolute LEGEND
Mark Knopfler is a living legend ❤
Proper humble man was great listening to the show this morning keep.up.the good work Chris 👏 🙌 👍
Completely agree with Chris about Sir Roger Daltry.
W.K É UMA BENÇÃO PARA NÓS ...UM PRESENTE DE DEUS PARA NÓS...ELE SIMPLESMENTE BRILHA , ILUMINA E AQUECE NOSSOS CORAÇÕES...
I LOVE YOU MARK
MK. Saw him at Sheffield Arena in 92 and again on the Road running tour. I'd love to have met him. Straits head since I was 12. Long live the legend that is Mark Knoofler. Thanks MK
I was at that but thought it was 91 as I went to see them on the same tour at woburn Abbey 92
Fairly sure it was 91 but I saw them at Sheffield too. I recorded it actually, keep meaning to dig that out.
Sheffield arena was 30th August 1991
Woburn Abbey was 20 June 1992, I still have the tickets somewhere
For those who don't know much about this guy check out Telegraph Road live performance from Alchemy tour. Then you'll see just what an absolute genius this guy is. Oh and after that everything else. Fantastic interview from Chris as well here. Love his energy and enthusiasm for this great man
Alchemy Live - Dire Straits is one of the greatest Live albums ever to be released. I rank it 2nd to Made In Japan - Deep Purple.
My favourite is the Thank You Australasia concert. It's on UA-cam. Not perfect quality but he never played better.
@@kentl7228 What year was the Australasia concert?

That is possibly the best lyric for a poet ever!

Beautiful interview of a great muso aging like fine wine.
Mark has written to soundtrack to so many of our lives …
So good to listen to 👍
I bought his cd. Yet I don't have a player. I buy everything he brings out.
Just great. Super guy.
Mark can do more with two or three notes than a lot of other guitarists. Less is more and what he plays has always been quality to me.
Always the GOAT!!
Chris is remembering the exclusive release of the brothers in arms video
In the "desert" was the trip to Israel with Paula Yates interviewing..I think that's what Chris was on about...
If you haven't bought the new album One Deep River buy it! Let's get Mark to number 1 on Sunday. Currently number 2.
