Johnathan Larson is one of those people you think “if only” if only he had more time. What other inspirational works might he have made. He truly is a part of musical theatre history.

I was recently saying the same. I'm not really religious but my partner pointed out that if you believe in anything along the lines of a higher purpose or things happening for a reason, Johnathon Larson fulfilled that. The fact he passed the night before Rent, one of the most influential musicals of all time, premiered off Broadway, is so insanely sad. I wish he were here to see his success and and how many people he has touched but it almost feels like he was here to give us that message and when he did, it was his time. Like he knew he needed to rush to his dreams, almost as if he could tell he didn't have time to keep waiting on it.
What he gave us is amazing and I would so love to have more. But wow if anyone has a purpose to fill before they go, he really did that.
Or did his premature death make his inspiration that much more impactful?
Another type of person like that are people like Michael Jackson, Chadwick Boseman. Kobe and his daughter, Prince Rogers Nelson, Freddie Mercury l, and so much more.

Sis same. Fucking bawled. I was thinking about the parallelity of it and Hamilton. Makes me think this is the reason why Lin-Manuel Miranda connected to Jon Larson's story strongly because the story he wrote for Hamilton is somewhat the same.
honestly, not even ironically, like he says "when am I going to go to the hospital? when am I going to write?" he was constantly in that "the show must go on" mindset, and of course he's talking about visiting his friend in hospital, but he really did just push through everything, ignoring his health and life outside of writing

It's truly sad the world was cheated out of such an amazing talent. Even more so since his death was likely preventable. He was misdiagnosed twice at 2 different NYC hospitals.

The pressure of age is real. I'm 26 years old on my final year at theatre school. I feel old most of the times being in school with most of 17 year old kids. After watching Tick Tick Boom Jonathan Larson taught me to not quit. Thank you Jon you were taken away too soon.
I recommend you to read the book called "The Defining Decade" by Meg Jay, it hits right on the spot!

I feel ya brother. I'm 29 going on 30 soon and made a career change to a Grad Soft Developer. Feels odd starting with 19-21 year olds and reporting to a senior who's 3-4 years younger than me. My manager is same age as me. Tick Tick Boom was the movie I needed right now!

I watched the movie without even know who is Jonathan Larson and I thought its just a fictional movie before... OMG.. what an amazing story. Rest in peace..
Look up his story! He had some kind of syndrome that I think contributed to his death. Marpan...something. I saw a documentary years ago. It's what gave him his lanky physique if I remember correctly.

@@aleks-33 marfan's syndrome. I know exactly what he felt when his aorta dissected, it's impending doom, the pain is unreal. My Dad was adopted so we found out we all had marfan's in 2000 when his aorta dissected. I'm fortunate I'm in Aus so My Family and I get free medical along with some amazing heart surgeon's in at RPA Sydney. I'm still getting over My second aortic replacement. His blood pressure on one side (probably left) would have been near nothing, should have clued them in something was seriously wrong! I'm hopeful for My Children with the medical advancements that are coming out now.
@@pascalswager9100 thank you for writing this, I am currently waiting to be notified regarding surgery. Hopefully I have it go smoothly and don’t land up with having to experience the pain of the dredged aortic dissection. I wish the film would have brought more awareness to Marfan Syndrome not only for the sake of all the undiagnosed patients but also for signs of early diagnosis and to educate all medical staff in the ER’s worldwide. Many lives could be saved with early diagnosis and proper treatment.
@@chercher7684 Oh wow, where You at mate? I'm sure it'll go well, I'm a total wimp and have made it through 2. Knowledge is definitely power, getting it changed out before a dissection is definitely the way to go! Health professionals should for sure be trained at least in signs of aortic rupture ey, but so many have never even heard of marfan's. Did You know We have a whole month for Marfan's awareness? I only found out last year about it.
I dislike the title of this video. He had an amazing life. His death was tragic, but not his life. He did more than any of twice his age will ever do. He changed the way we think about musical theater, he changed the way we think about AIDS. His work is immortal.

last twenty minutes of the movie had me sobbing my eyes out, truly a great masterpiece. lin manuel miranda and the cast did a really good job portraying the rawness and the struggle of being an aspiring musician. 10/10 would watch again when i'm mentally stable.

Tick Tick Boom means a lot to me personally because Rent is my favorite musical of all time and recently I was in a production of Rent over the summer. So I really loved this movie and I really hope Andrew Garfield gets an Oscar nomination for this

Cried like a baby at the end of tick, tick boom. Most of My Family has Marfan's syndrome, I just had My second aortic replacement, very lucky to be here. My Son (also has marfan's) is an amazing guitarist and just released his first album this week at 22y/o, this hit close to home, Jonathan's work is amazing! If only ey.
Reminds me of Paganini and Rachmaninoff - both had Marfan’s and both became masters of their instruments, inspiring violinists and pianists for generations! Larson’s heart troubles were a shame, but I’m glad he died doing what he loved! Very unfortunate, but he changed history for the better for sure!

I was good at wind instruments, played in an orchestra at the opera house in Sydney many years ago, didn't keep up with it though. My house is full of instruments, going to get My Daughter her first bass guitar for her 15th b'day tomorrow. I haven't stopped listening to everything Jonothan Larson since I learnt about him 😁

If only he had been given the right diagnosis, so unbelievably tragic.
Makes me think of my Brother... He was in the hospital for a week treating a clot in his leg, and because of miscommunication among the medical team he passed away when the clot traveled...
He had been trying to become a police officer for over 5 years... He got accepted into the police academy around the time he was admitted into the hospital.
At his funeral, we learned that he touched way more people's lives than we knew.
He was about 4 months away from being 33

I hope that someday someone will find his notes for “Superbia” and actually make it come to fruition for Jonathan. Maybe Lin Manuel. If anyone can he can do it for him
There's actually a book called Boho Days with all the extensive notes and rewrites. The problem is, and the thing that Stephen Sondheim pointed out in past interviews, is that the show does not work because it doesn't have a solid resolution at the end.
to add on the blurrycake, before sondheim died, he was interviewed about jon, tick tick boom, etc. and he even said that jon didn’t fully develop his full talents. plot was lacking in some points and there were good and bad throughout the entirety of superbia. if there were to have a superbia movie, show, etc, then the person to do it would have to come to terms that jon would be credited for songs and idea, but not the story as it supposedly heavily needed work.
If Jonathan Larson was still alive today, he would be very proud of Lin Manuel Miranda's latest masterpiece based on Jon's work.

I was a 16 yr old black kid from Brooklyn who never even explored Manhattan. And my theater teacher Ms.Sanservaro showed us the movie, then took us on a trip to see RENT. It was my first play. I'm 31 and still listen to the soundtrack and love theater. Thank you Ms.S and thank you Jonathan. Both of them helped me grow as a human
I never really thought much about Andrew Garfield. I did see the original cast of Rent in 96, thought it was great but wasn't obsessed with it like a lot of my theater friends. However, I did know a lot about Johnathan Larson. When I saw Tick tick boom I started to think about Garfield and his performance. I can't think of another role in which someone was required to be a triple threat but ALSO portray a real person. Not only that-- a beloved man by millions. He hit the ball out of the park.
Garfield is amazing with roles based on real lives. He puts so much work into it, whether Tick Tick Boom or Hacksaw Ridge. But even loving him, I thought he did an outstanding performance in the film, definitely one if not his best.
Think of what would we have in this musical world if he hadn’t passed. He was a real superstar. And I have to give Andrew Garfield props for doing such a wonderful portrayal!
He accomplished all of his life goals post mortem. That’s tuff. R.I.P.

I’m sitting here, alone, on a Monday morning at 11, bawling my eyes out over someone that not nearly enough people know. He changed the face of Broadway forever, and I hope that one day I will be able to make a fraction of the impact he did on so many lives. We love you forever, Jonathan Larson.
They say the brightest candles burn out the fastest. Larson did exactly what he set out to do, and I like to think he is smiling down on his achievement. It's depressing to think that most of us will never do a tenth of what he did, but then, that's what makes it accomplishments so special. RIP Jonanthan Larson. And thank you.
Tick, Tick Boom is very prophetic. He touches on the fact that he feels like he is running out of time throughout that musical.
I dont even know what to say. As a writer, his story is incredibly inspiring and it's heartbreaking that he didn't get to see it all come to fruition. Andrew delivered an incredible performance and I'm so glad his work is still being recognized.

One of Jonathan Larson’s close friend recently published his reaction for this movie. It was very touching because he said it felt like their friend is back again together with them for the hours of the movie. Congrats to the whole crew!
Larson and Hamilton both wrote like they were running out of time and both succeeded in building something that outlived them for generations! I’m so sad he died so soon, but I’m so glad he paved the way for modern musical theatre and de-stigmatized AIDS and Bohemianism! What a treasure!
Rent is in a special place of my heart. I’m from Japan but I even went to Moondance Diner wanting to feel a piece of Jonathan. Watching this and reading warm comments here are comforting❤
As a kid, I regularly passed by Moondance Diner. I never realized the genius that was working there at the time. That is the irony.
I’m a Renthead, I have the lyrics tattooed across my entire left arm. It depresses me that he was already passed away by the time I even found Rent. I remember looking for other works, and being like “noooo, what???”! It shocks me that when most people ask me what’s on my arm and I say Rent lyrics, they don’t know what that is….

That misdiagnosis took a legend from us before he even knew he was one. How unfortunate.
between Rent, Tick... Tick... Boom! and Superbia, I don't think Jonathan wrote a song more beautiful than "Come to Your Sense". I get chills and tear up every time I hear it, no matter if it's the OCR or the Movie version. even the R&B cover at the end was beautiful and I'm not big on those sort of movie end credits covers.
He really did make the most out if his limited time on earth.
I genuinely believe that, had Lin and him Jonathan met, he would’ve been one of the consultants for In The Heights and Hamilton.

Jonathan Larson was a motivational for all the young generation who is passionate in songwriting and making music etc. Garfield did phenomenal performance and hope that he would win Oscar for his great acting in this movie.
There are waay too many songs from Jonathan Larson that I am in love with, but one of my favorites is 'Love Heals' which is either inspired by, or in memory of, Alison 'Ali' Gertz, one of his friends who passed away from AIDS at a young age.
Also, I'm not surprised that Lin-Manuel Miranda did such an amazing job directing a movie about Jonathan. I see so much of Jonathan's influence in Lin's work. And you absolutely cannot deny that both Lin and Jonathan are trailblazers in American theater.
I just thought of one line that stood out to me from the movie, “I’m the future of musical theatre.” He was quite right.
Fun fact: According to Anthony Rapp, Jonathan really did introduce himself to someone like that once at a birthday party! 😆

I remember watching RENT in a theater it was after practice and a friend and I were not interested in chasing skirts or drinking. So we hit the town and was drawn to this theater and it changed our lives. I had only been accepting of the gay lifestyle for a few years. Having been a horrid homophobe. And Jonathan's RENT touched me so deep. The love between Angel and Collins... touching
The greatest tragedy is that he never got to see his creation being appreciated the way it has been

My favorite Jonathan Larson song in Rent is “Without You”. All of the songs are wonderful, but “Without You” brought me to tears. I am so glad I got to see the 25th Anniversary show at our new Playhouse Theater!! Amazing performance!!

my favorite jonathan song is 'father and son' by cat stevens...we used to sing that song together when we were in college...we were both theatre majors and both had a passion for music...we'd sit at the piano and play originals as well as alot of cat stevens....and my personal favorite duet that we did often was 'father and son' by cat stevens...i will always remember him....peace...rocky

I don’t think his life should be considered a tragedy. Yes, his death was but his life was a miracle. A gift to theatre.
That was a beautiful tribute to this astounding talent & visionary.
I'm seeing alot of comments saying something along the lines of "it's a shame he never got to see how successful rent was" but knowing his struggle from having Marfans and being a struggling artist myself, the biggest tragedy of his story is he never got to live in comfort while doing what he loved. The stress and heartbreak of poverty is a soul crusher on an artist. I'll never stop being an artist or advocating for Marfans research, and I truly appreciate what he did to make waves in both communities. Such a beautiful soul.
It is so sad that he had created this big production and was not even able to watch his own work.
My favorite Jonathan Larson song is his entire body of work. His music is absolutely amazing and every time I hear a new song or (old song) that hadn't been published after his death. I feel a new sense of renown and a sense of waking up for the first time in a long time.
Jonathon joins many artistic geniuses gone too soon. He left us his heart.

It's humbling and disheartening to think, a man of Jonathan Larson's incredible genius struggled, STRUGGLED for so many years to achieve success. He never gave up even though a part of him really did. But not be able to bask in that glory on the eve of his triumph due to his sudden, unforseen passing. Makes one wonder, how many people of equal or lesser talent threw in the towel?

It's been about a month since my dad passed away, and i got to know today that jonathan was only 7 years older than my dad. It's so unfortunate to see people pass away so young.

Just finished watching the film and I was moved by it which is rare. I know only few film adaptations succeeds but I gotta say, ITH and TTB is an exception.

I grew up watching Rent since I was at least 4 or 5, the screen adaptation. My mom and my dad wanted to allow me to be exposed to musical theatre since I was young and oh my god I am so grateful they did. Rent gave me a view of the world and helped develop my values since I was a little girl. I remember when I was 10 my mom surprised me and brought me to Rent Live in my city and I have never felt anything like that high. Jonathan Larson wrote about things in all of his musicals that the world needed to hear. I am grateful he has turned this sour world into a musical rendition. He will be forever loved. ❤️❤️❤️

I feel like, if he was born a few years later, maybe things would’ve worked out a little differently. For instance: In the age of UA-cam, when everyone has the opportunity to take things into their own hands, he could’ve produced and published his own work. Or: I bet he could’ve turned out like Scott Bradlee (Postmodern Jukebox) if he was willing to consider taking his skills as a composer and arranger and use them a little differently.
I don't know when I'll die, but I hope I live my life like Jon, doing what I love and with people I love.
