Your doing a grand job, definitely got your work cut out for yourself more so doing it outside with our lovely British weather we get. I bet you looking forward to getting it finished. You will be proud as punch knowing you done it yourself. Your an inspiration to us old foggies I nearly thought about painting my fence lol. Looking forward to seeing your next vlog as they are always interesting and varied showing life on a canal boat warts and all.
Thanks Neil. I'm having a good go at it, but the last 10 days have been a bit of a washout with the weather. So not much has been done. But I'm always hopeful it will change!
Ahh dad well done, you’ve done such a good job, its made such a difference already! I love the shade of blue you have picked.. it’s gorgeous! Can’t wait to see Aitch when he’s all finished. I really enjoyed that one, very interesting to watch and look forward to seeing the next part to this, just need the weather to sort itself out now so you can carry on.. Enjoyed the funky music too 😂 Well done again, you should be proud of yourself xxxx
It ain't stopped raining since then, so I'm chomping at the bit to get going again! Hopefully it will look well when I do all the finishing touches, but that's a fair way off yet. Glad you liked the music haha! xxx
Thank you so much for this video Vince. I am a solo female Narrowboat owner who is about to paint my boat. Your video has helped me so much already to understand the process. What a beautiful royal blue colour and great job you have done. It’s looking great so far. Priceless inspiration. Thank you again.
Vincent Van Gogh from what I can tell 👍👍👍 I only found the channel recently so I’ve been binge watching. Thoroughly enjoyed everyone so far, keep it up.
I say old bean, I believe you have done quite a stellar job so far! The panel looks quite chipper and that new shade of blue comes across as being quite a bit more bright and cheerful as well as more modern in appearance. May I make a bit of suggestion to you ? I would like to see you wear some form of dust mask to help protect your precious lungs from that nasty dust. I'm sure there are things in there that you would not really want to ingest. Also, maybe you could wear some sort of cap to protect your dome when the sun is out Will be nice to see the girl when you have all the labor finished. Best to you Sir ! Kenny C Oregon USA
Cheers Kenny! I always make sure the Dome doesn't get too much sun, but I agree with you on the dust mask. I will take that advice in the future! All the best Vince!
Hi Vince, I've finally managed to view your latest vlog and a very good and interesting one it is. The first thing I thought was the dust mask but people have already mentioned it. 😉😁 I think you are doing a wonderful job. What a big project. I know you will do it well and I look forward to seeing it when its finished. I remember my dad, your granddad painting his Vauxhall Cresta on the road. The work he put into the preparation and the amount of time he took on the final rubbing down. You reminded me if him. Granddad and uncle Dave always said how important the preparation was. Well God bless you Vince. See you on the next vid. Lots of love, aunt Babs. XXX
I remember Grandad painting that car (gold & black I think) I agree about the preparation, hard work but worth it in the end! See you next time love Vince xxx
Either the camera is being kind or you have done a damn good job with the prep! I think leaving it as roller finish is the way to go, it'll be nice and consistent. A big job, doing the whole boat - a panel at a time will get you there. Great colour too.
I'll be able to get away with just the roller for the red oxide & undercoats. I tried it with the gloss & it left a lot of air bubbles so I had to sand them all out & go again. A panel at a time is not so soul destroying I reckon. I think the colour will look nice when I paint the window frames, stripes & signage in a cream colour. All the best in whatever you're doing now Vin!
Great job Vince, 60s you say? Funky music says 20s! Whenever you rub back to bare metal it would always be worth re-applying the rust cure it’ll do no harm to the paint or filler but give the best protection against the dreaded rust. It’s you we are watching for so cruising, painting, mundane tasks, dogs it’s all good by me! Best Andy..
Hi Vince If I recall, the reason the filler goes ‘Off’ too quickly is because you have added to much hardener. Sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. The grades of pads should be : 80 for the rough work 120 for prime 320 for rubbing down primer before top coat
Oh well done Vince. Although it’s one panel, it’s pretty much a quarter of the work done already. Although the roof will be fun for your knees. Get some decent pads. You can almost see the old name of the boat from the treated rust marks. It’s also really obvious, on speed up, how much the boat moves when other boats go past. I’ll look forward to seeing the rest done. Take care Vince. Xxx
I'd say its about 10% done Deb! But because of the crap weather not much has happened in the last 10 days. Yes, it does move about a bit when other boats go by. Look after yourself Vince xxx
Keep painting Vince you'll be an artist by the end of it, imagine those guys who used to paint the Forth railway bridge when they thought that they had finished they had to start painting from the other end again. It looks like you are doing a good job but a word of warning I never trust those rotary wire wheels you never know when one of the wires might break off I always wear safety glasses if I use one. Good luck from all on dry land! 😉
Yes, that must have been soul destroying! I also like the way that you're giving me some sound advice in a nice way Barry, without getting my back up haha! All the best Vin!
Don't beat yourself up mate it looks great. . . you just need the weather to play ball. Loved the way Ashby kept an eye on you. . . he is a great supervisor. Take care and all the best.
You know how it is Mark. When you know of a few bits that didn't come out perfect. And nobody else really notices anyway. But it still bugs you a bit haha! Yes, I don't realise how much Ashby has his eye on me until I edit these vlogs! All the best Vin!
Good work Vince. To answer your question, yes it was me who stopped for a chat in my boat Rock Solid on the GU near Braunston. At least you’ve made a start and you can refine and adjust your technique as you get along. I have the paint, just getting the rest of the equipment together:- sander, filler, dust mask and filters etc. before I start. All the best mate.
It was nice to say hello to you Paul. Good luck with your painting. The weathers been playing up for the last 10 days, so not much has changed on Aitch. But I remain hopeful it will buck up a bit!
Give yourself a pat on the back Vince, it can't have been easy to do all that work while your boat's being dragged all over the canal. As you say everyday is a school day and " Aitch" will look mighty fine when finished. Loving the music by the way. Take care and look forward to the next one. Kath
Nice to see one just one colour on aitch at least on the one panel , I'll be looking to see how the rest goes on. It looks like to much hard work for me .😅 see you next time good luck with the painting.
Vince, if I had to watch anybody else's paint dry I would have turned off!😂 But, as it's you mate..... Looks like you had cracking days to do it too. All the best.
Sound job Vince. It’s amazing the difference a lick of paint can make, but a real pain in the bum for all the preparation that goes in to it. I reckon Aitch is going to look just the business, once it is all done. I feel your pain too, however. I spent a couple of weekends sanding under the entire waterline of my boat and then anti-fouling it. It was in my garden with the boat only on stands, so I had to do most of it while lying on my back. I am over 60 now as well, so the hardest part was getting up and down, and swearing at my knees ! On the plus side the boat is only 7m long, so not narrow boat length. Anyway it’s back in the water now and I am ready for cruising the Czech rivers again. Thanks to you for keeping my boating fix going over the winter. As always, great vlog Vince, keep them coming.
A little bit of graft does make a big difference Stephen. But like you said it don't get any easier as time goes by! That's a bigger boat than I thought you had. Enjoy yourself over the next few months, all the best Vin!
Hi Vince glad I never owned a steel boat, but I can tell wooden ones are even worse. Used to paint the hull of mine every year, the last three years were the best kept the boat in a climate controlled shed in Holland. So a quick rub down of the hull that had been jet washed before storage, a case of beer in the fridge and a mate on the roller, I'd follow behind with a large fine hair brush keeping the brush strokes in an upwards direction so the shine when dry was great. I always decanted any left over paint into smaller cans for touching up any dings through the summer. A little trick if your going to paint down near the water line is to weight the otherside of the boat to get a lean on and raise the work side enough to keep it dry, when other boats pass etc. Your doing great and the works inspector didn't bark at you once, are you going to have a go at sign writting???? Take care mate and keep busy.
You've always given sound advice from your experiences. Which I've taken onboard when I can. Yes I noticed Ashby had his beady eye on me haha! Look after yourself mate! PS about the sign writing, I will see how I feel when the time comes!
Looks like a lot of hard work went into that section, good thing is if you don't like the colour you only need to repaint a small section and not the whole boat, cannot believe it has been four years I remember seeing your boat when it was up for sale and thinking that would suit me,
Greeting Vince, This is the worst job in DIY. I hated the prep work for anything be it boat, car or even at home, but as my old dad would say remember the 6P's, Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. I don't envy you painting all those lines, along that length any error will stand out like a sore thumb. Although not a cruising episode it's still enjoyable as it's all part of life on our waterways. Keep up the good work. Kevin
As a retired house painter a good job if I was. doing. the job my advice is get your base undercoat tinted to the same colour as the top coat also sand down with 140 grit each coat and tip off with at least a 75mm decent quality brush in fact if I was in the Uk I would have loved to paint her for you anyway old mate see ya next video so cheers n beers Marty Australia
More good advice Marty. I will take what advice I can, with the materials I've got at hand. As I can't get to the right stores most of the time. All the best Vince!
The finish looked fine, nice and even. I like that shade of blue. Are you going to do the "aitch" lettering? Watching you work got me sweating and I wasn't even doing anything. Keep up the good work. You should be done by fall.
I may have a go at doing the Aitch, see how I feel. I’ve hardly done anything since. Rained nearly every day so fingers crossed for the fall or autumn.
Worth doing yourself unless you want to spend about 12k on a pro job that will still get scratched anyway. You are doing ok, keep it up. Final coat looks better with a brush.
Big job you’ve got there Vince but I’m sure it will look great when you’re all done, and I think you are right about brushing off, I have watched a few videos about painting boats by hand and they all said if you use a roller, then finish with a dry brush. Good luck though mate and looking forward to the next one.
Goodness, that is a massive job and you're doing brilliantly! The blue is gorgeous. Big ups to you and Ashby 💪🌟🌟
Thanks Annie I need a bit of encouragement haha!

That’s it Vince keep on painting when u can and the weathers fit. You’ll soon have it done 👍
That's the best I can hope for I reckon!
huge job you are undertaking, but slow and steady wins the race. What a sense of accomplishment.
Its definitely a big job Linda. If I think about it too much it knocks me back a bit. What I am trying to do is tackle one job at a time!
Ahh dad well done, you’ve done such a good job, its made such a difference already! I love the shade of blue you have picked.. it’s gorgeous! Can’t wait to see Aitch when he’s all finished. And a dust mask as well Terry!

@@terrylynch1259 The problem when I do a job Terry. Is I always think I can do better haha!
Well done mate. I did mine last September. Passable but not great-‐ I'll have a better go next time!
Thank you! The problem I have is I always look at the little mistakes that I know that I’ve made. That other people probably wouldn’t notice haha!
That will keep you busy! goo work Vince. All the best mate. Cheers, Bill.
You're right Bill. I might even lose some of that big belly I've got haha!
Now Vince you know your supposed to use ‘Yakety Sax’ for the music when your speeding up the film 🤣
Haha! I'll have to look that up for next time!
Looks like you picked a busy spot - boats up and down all day!! Not an easy job - well done for taking it on... Good luck with the weather.
Yes, the boat was moving about a bit. But speeding the shots up made it look a bit worse than it was!
Still one of my favourite channels on UA-cam
That's high praise indeed! I could do with another 10,000 like yourself haha!
I think your doing a great job considering your not a boat painter, great vlog as usual. 😊
Cheers Robert! I can only do my best!
Its a good start there Vince. Look forward to the end result.
