In the vein of TCM's ban for "nothing", I've always loved that Hitchcock was told he had to trim down "Psycho" because it was too graphic... So he sent the unedited film back to the board. Which approved it. 🤣
Not always because of bans, but musicians used to do the same thing with songs. Execs, ad people would say if you would change this and that, you would get backing, and the musicians would send back the same song or album and it would be meet with approval.
Growing up in Ireland my mam never had any problem with me watching horror at a young age, but when one of my older brothers brought a copy of "I spit on your grave" she went berserk and broke the VHS across his back, she was a gentle woman but had her breaking point, ........good times :)

It's hard to explain what seeing Faces of Death as a kid in the pre-internet 80s was like. My friend's older brother let us watch it and told us everything we saw was real. Back then there was no way to debunk that.
I actually own this thing and sure, the baby sex part is totally repellant. However on repeat viewings (without the shock of the first viewing) the scene looks so fake and cartoonist that it's hard to take seriously. The closing few minutes are much more disgusting anyway.
I was in my 20’s in the 1970’s. I saw all the 70’s films at the drive in! 😂😂😂 Didn’t sleep for about a week after Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Personally, I found the book The Exorcist much scarier than the movie, but that’s just me. Thanks for another great video ❤️
Just to clarify with regards to the Exorcist. It was never banned in the UK. You could legally see this movie in cinemas but the director of the BBFC in the 80s prevented it from being on VHS. When he resigned from his post it was immediately passed with an 18 for video along with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead (uncut), & other previously banned movies without hesitation.
With regard to this there was an excellent two part BBC documentary about the BBFC called 'Empire of the Censors'. It aired in the mid 90s as part of an extreme cinema weekend (titled Forbidden Weekend) and included airing The Devils, The Night Porter, Performance, Beat Girl, and Bad Taste. It's a truly excellent doc, covering a very concise "warts and all" history. What's most interesting is that it was made only a few years before James Ferman (director of the BBFC, and featured heavily in the doc) retired which then led to a huge relaxing in BBFC policy which meant films like Exorcist and the "video nasties" could finally be made available on home video. As a bizarre aside, given that Ferman was ultimately responsible for so many "extreme" classics being unavailable (Exorcist, TCM, Clockwork Orange....the last goes on) he weirdly went hard to bat for Passolini's Salo (though it could only be shown in approved venues), labeling it a film of such importance that it could not be censored without damaging the intent... Rich fuckers, eh 🤷
@@MiSTSYL Quick clarification. A Clockwork Orange was withdrawn by the director himself because of a police threat. If he didn’t withdraw the film then they couldn’t guarantee the safety for him or his family. The trouble with Ferman was that he felt the working class wasn’t educated enough to differentiate what was real & what wasn’t. Ferman was a failed American movie director who had his own editing suite at the BBFC & personally edited violent scenes, or weapons that he felt was unsuitable for the working class consumption. When he retired the new BBFC director had it dismantled.

I can remember when Faces of Death came out, people I went to school with talked about it being real depictions of death. I was just a kid then and I thought, why would _ANYBODY_ want to watch such a thing? I've since learned, people watch all kinds of sick $h!t. I'm 60 now. Still haven't watched it and never will. Btw, I love horror movies, I just don't want to see _REAL_ deaths. I think the thing that upsets people the most about The Exorcist, is the things the young actress was exposed to. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the most disgustingly horrible movie I've ever seen. I saw it at the drive-in with a date (big mistake). I put my speaker back on the stand and rolled up the window (and asked her to do the same) so I couldn't hear the girl's screams & the chainsaw running as he chased her for what seemed like hours. I took a shower immediately after I got home b/c I felt like I was _IN_ that house and had to wash off the filth

Weirdly the Faces of Death series was readily available in every rental store back in the 80s in the USA. It was like the Quadruple Cheeseburger of the horror section, the thing on the menu that made you feel good about only getting a double cheeseburger in the form of Hellraiser or whatever.
When films were banned, here in the UK, it didn't really stop people from watching them. All it managed to do was force films like these to go under the counter and away from the shelves of the VHS rental stores. So if you regularly visited the shop your face would become known and this opened up the under the counter options. I have all of these in my collection except for Traces of Death and Faces of Death which I'm not interested in. Great content Emma, thank you.

As a big horror and comicbook fan living in Glasgow Scotland who remembers the 90s well you can imagine how delighted I was to hear that this existed (a horror comic set in my hometown - yay!) so thank you for spreading the word :)
I think two others were banned: The human centipede 2 (2011) (sorry if you is having your breakfast), and : The Hunt (2019) (if you wake up in a forest, without remembering anything, ¡Run!).
Before getting into The Texas Chainsaw Massacre I wanted to check out a few scenes on yt to make sure it's close to my vibe. I watched one or two and when I got to sleep I dreamt about it like I was in it! That terrified me but also made me want to watch the damn thing and now it's one of my fav cult classics!
Growing up in the 80s, Faces of Death was a mandatory part of every sleepover. We’d wait until the adults went to sleep & then popped it in the VCR. We then stayed up the whole night because we were totally freaked out. We always seemed to get a copy from somebody’s older brother who wore heavy metal t-shirts & leather jackets. Good times!
I’ve seen 4 of those…. I’ve got some others that were also banned in Australia but finally were released, as well as them promoting that on the cover. I kept finding these “previously banned but now available” movies in Newtown 👍🏼
Now why the hell did that maths teacher show Faces of Death to their students.. like was it the end of the year when they show movies instead of having class or was it randomly in the middle of the year, did they think it was somehow appropriate or was it on purpose 😭
As a horror fan and a film geek overall, it's very interesting to know more about horror movies that are facing issues regarding censorship. There are like a few English-language horror movies that came out in the Philippines that are either slapped with a rarely-used X-rating or banned permanently by the MTRCB. For instance, "The Shining" initially received an X-rating since its release back in 1980 and later changed into an R-16 rating years later. In 2016, "The Neon Demon" was also given an X-rating, which is rare nowadays. "Bordello of Blood" was originally rated X, but later re-rated it R-18. And as for the infamous and shock-value horror movies, films such as "Cannibal Holocaust", "The Human Centipede Trilogy", "A Serbian Film" and "Antichrist" are permanently banned in the country. My most vivid memory of watching a movie that physically affected me was viewing “A Serbian Film” in college with no context of its content. I remember finishing it and shutting my laptop off, walking outside on the quad for an hour trying to view the scenery to scrub my mind, and then going to Taco Bell ordering a cheese quesadilla that I couldn’t finish. I still get sick on my stomach just thinking about ‘that’ scene. I watched “I Spit on Your Grave” once as a 20 year old during a gross movie marathon when The Human Centipede 1 came out. I just couldn’t get the appeal with the SA scene, I mentally checked out. I think of ‘Revenge’ with Matilda Lutz as a palatable version of that movie.
I've seen Cannibal Holocaust,A Serbian Film, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I wasn't surprised about Cannibal and ASF, I'd heard about Chainsaw,but The Exorcist was a surprise to me. I don't blame people for deciding the first two aren't for them , especially given the animal cruelty in Cannibal and subject matter in ASF.
The funny thing about Serbian film is everything is good and that movie from the acting to the cinematography to the color schemes it almost has like a dreamlike quality that is lacking in a lot of movies especially when their horror stories about things that could really happen not just any like ghost movies or paranormal movies and things like that. One of the very first reviews I have a read of Serbian film was about 10 years ago and the guy who did the review said that if it weren't for such horrible subject matter the movie would probably be up for several awards especially when it comes to the art side of movie making.
And it does a good job at pacing. It slowly builds the fucked up so you're always shocked at whats happening. Any lesser movie would blow it load in the beginning and the whole thing would be boring after that.
Think I've seen all of these and most of the sequels. Being an edgy highschooler in the 90's means that you had to get together with your friends and watch all the Faces/Traces of Death. I haven't seen A Serbian Film since it first became *available online, but I remember it not being as bad as I was anticipating content-wise, and was actually very artfully shot, and well-acted. Not to say it wasn't grotesque, but I was expecting something along the lines of a snuff movie. It felt more like a surreal nightmare that clearly had ambitions towards being a potent allegory for something I wasn't familiar with. It was like Salo 2.0 for me.
That comic sounds absolutely awesome. I mean, really, it ticks every single box for me and I will def be buying it. It sounds like a horror fan's growing up story from the 80's My first part time job, when I was 15, was working at the local video shop. In those days, mid 80s, you could actually rent a video machine ( that's what we called them back in SA) and of course you had your choice of VHS or Betamax. The deal was the machine plus 2 videos, overnight rental. My mum would choose her movie and I was allowed to choose one - which meant me heading straight to the horror section. She had no probs with me watching my beloved horrors. When A Nightmare on Elm Street was released on home video, it arrived in our shop and I took it home to watch. It was still wrapped in cellophane. I must of been one of the first people to see it on home video in our town. What vivid memories. I miss those simpler times. What I like most about Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the constant bad news on the radio in the van. Some of it , even foreshadowing the fate of the travelers. I Spit On Your Grave has that great bathtub scene .. " That feels so good it almost hurts ".

Thanks for the list, Emma, and also for the update on The Nasty comic. I first read about this upcoming comic in the October issue of Comic Shop News, but no sign of it since. Great to hear that it will finally get released in April. I've seen four of the films listed and those are Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit On Your Grave, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The remaining films I very much doubt I could watch. I remember Faces Of Death was "the film to see for horror fans" in the 1980's, but I couldn't do it.
The BBFC has become very relaxed since 1999 (when the people responsible for not allowing certain movies on VHS etc). The whole UK video Nasty scene is very interesting and intrigues many many people. I've watched these movies, to which the only 1 that made me go "no thank you" was "A Serbian Film". I do think this was done just to make a shock value horror movie, to which it achieved.
OMG so cool you mentioned the "A Serbian Film situation" in Brazil! I was one of the people who had tickets for the movie in the film festival. It was a festival hosted by a Brazilian company/bank, and when people heard what the movie depicted, many of the bank's clients threatened to close their accounts if the movie was shown. At the sabe time, horror fans even organized a small protest in front of the building where the Festival was taking place, but still it wasn't shown. I confess I bought the tickets because of the hype, but I didn't know how extreme it was... when I finally watched it I hated it very very much 🤣 Not my cup of tea at all, and I felt sick all night long... I draw my line a little far from that.

there's The Profit which is a docudrama about L Ron Hubbard and $cientology, which was withheld from release because it would supposedly taint a trial's outcomes about the death of a former member, and even though that trial's been over and done with since 2007 there's still legal higglety-pigglety keeping it from an official release
Unlike in many countries, there is no government cinema classification board in the US. The age restrictions are set by the motion picture association, which is a private organization. They are voluntary and have no legal enforcement. So there is no way to ban a movie in the US, unless you can find something criminal in it and ban it from distribution that way.
Great video! I've only seen The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, and I Spit on Your Grave. Technically I was in the same room when Faces of Death was playing, but I didn't watch most of it (except for the bit with the guy and the grizzly bear, which was clearly fake and unintentionally hilarious). Serbian Film and Cannibal Holocaust are both on my "nope, never, no way" list. The Exorcist seems tame now, but back in the 70s, some people believed the film itself was possessed by Satan.

Cannibal Holocaust is such a frustrating film for me. I really liked the partial found footage angle and the mystery of discovering what happened, but the real-life animal cruelty was just disgusting.
Another great list Emma. Of all the films on this list I own Texas Chainsaw, The Exorcist and the uncut version of I Spit On Your Grave. I've seen none of the others except Cannibal Holocaust which I saw on video back in the 80s.
Thanks for the video, Emma! I´ve seen the Exorcist and The Texas chainsaw massacre - both favorites of mine. I find it so interesting that the latter have become such a symbol for video violence. Here in Sweden there are many classic moments from debate programs in the 80´s where the violence in The Texas chainsaw massacre (Motorsågsmassakern) is discussed. When I first saw it I was well over 20, and very surprised of the lack of graphic violence, despite its rumor.

I have always been too scared to watch The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massecre and need to work up the nerve. I guess it is a little ironic because I have seen Bad Boy Bubby and Hounds of Love. I really need to give you credit for having it in to to have watched some of these movies.
I did enjoy the first half of Bad Boy Bubby. Especially up to the Rescue Missions work. A little bit after that it became more of a sideshow itself. Somewhat losing its integrity. I did enjoy Hounds of Love all the way through. Faces of Death isn't really worth your time. The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are though. Both are very well done. If I may add one, The Devils with Oliver Reed.
I've actually seen all of them, those earlier ones in the list on VHS back in the 90s. Apart from The Exorcist, I don't feel like my life was in any way enriched by having seen them, but they were apparently what I wanted at the time. I'd certainly not recommend them to anyone else.
I'll never watch Cannibal Holocaust because of the animal cruelty being real. There was no reason for that. If he could convince people that well that he'd murdered other humans, then he could've done the same for the animals without harming them. I'm a horror junkie but I won't entertain that film.
Yeah, “Faces of Death” lost me when the bear attack was showing the family (ugh, I already didn’t want to watch this) inside of the car, then it was being shot from the outside of the car. Nobody in my living room noticed until I said, “hey , this has two cameramen!” … I shut it off

I attempted to watch "Cannibal Holocaust" once, but I only made it a few minutes in before deciding it wasn't for me. I haven't seen "I Spit on Your Grave" for years, but I recently pulled it off my shelf and am planning on watching it again, though I remember very little. Based on your description, I'm not sure how far I'll get with it. "The Exorcist" is, of course, a classic, but I have to say it: in my (humblest) opinion, the book is better. William Peter Blatty does a great job of balancing fiction and fact, giving honest, psychological reasons for possession. Lastly, my favorite part of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is the fact that so many people claim they saw the hook going through the neck, even though it's not in the movie. The power of the mind is great.
I find Australian films hit hard!!! Two great movies off the top of my head, but soooo heavy. Snowtown Murders ( great filmmaking and GREAT acting ), and the same for “Revenge” . The latter being a masterclass in filmmaking.
This list was very interesting to watch. I have seen several notably banned films but there was still not much overlap between which ones I have seen and which ones are on this list.
I didn’t realize there was an original when I saw I spit on your grave. I saw the remake and it was intense but it was also very captivating and interesting. I also have seen the exorcist and while I didn’t find it that scary there are definitely nail biting moments and I enjoyed the story. I have also seen Texas chainsaw massacre and enjoyed it. The 70s vibe is honestly hilarious and I felt like while it was inferring violence like you said, it really doesn’t show anything. I enjoyed it overall
Awesome video! I always wanted to know what horror movies were banned and now I know! I'm actually not that surprised that the Exorcist was banned due to the subject matter and due to the era it came out of.
I've seen all but A Serbian Film due to hearing about that "one scene" beforehand, the Exorcist and Chainsaw are both great films. I remember seeing one called Shocking Asia as a kid that had some pretty fffed up stuff in it too.
I was surprised Irreversible wasn't on the list. I saw all but The Exorcist (sad that I've never watched it). Serbian Film was incredibly disturbing, especially that scene. It also has one of the most disturbing deaths that comes after that scene.
I've seen all of them except Traces of Death and the original I Spit On Your Grave (I did see the remake though). Most I wouldn't watch again, but I'm glad I've seen them once anyway.
I remember when I first started getting into horror movies around 2006, my dad told me about how Faces Of Death was the most horrifying horror movie he had ever seen and how everything from it was real. By 2009 or so I finally seen the movie and yeah, it was pretty awful. In the terrifying way. Not scary, just disturbing.
I've seen all of them, bar TRACES OF DEATH, mostly in my much younger days as a British gorehound in the 80's, when everything was getting banned. I'm not a gorehound any more, so I don't care to rewatch most of them, except the top-tier classics like TCM & THE EXORCIST.
I have seen Texas Chainsaw (it's incredible) and The Exorcist (excellent but not as good as TTCM) and i watched half of Cannibal Holocaust but couldn't finish it i think it's the only movie to make me do this. The others i haven't seen.
It may be an urban legend, but I read that the whole Video Nasty thing kicked off in part because Ruggero Deodato, in an attempt to drum up publicity, wrote to Mary Whitehouse, pretending to be an average Joe, claiming to have been traumatised by Cannibal Holocaust. Whoops.
Have you ever watched The Devils (1971), Emma? I believe it was banned in several places, and it took quite a while to get a dvd release. On directors that stood trial for a film they made, I think that is also true of the director who made Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom.
I've watched both. There's an interview of Oliver Reed discussing The Devils in some depth. It had Mickey Spillane, Lady Barnett, and the interviewer was Parkinson Chat show in 1973. It's on UA-cam and the one discussing The Devils is Part 3. Salo is a not really for me. I felt removed from the characters because of the way were depicted. I very much liked The Devils though.
I love some banned movies like TCM, The Exorcist. Evil Dead and then there are some where I can see why they banned like A Serbian Film man it was so long ago since i watched it but it's still fresh in my mind and what not any mentions of The Human Centipede trilogy or Solo or A Clockwork Orange?
I know banned horror is not commercial but this list is the most common list of banned movies ever. There's so many others that you could have chose that some of us horror fans might not have seen. I went into Cannibal Holocaust blind as a midnight movie. I had no idea what I was getting into and regret seeing it. I absolutely cannot do animal cruelty.

I've seen all of these except Traces of Death. I've also seen the first Faces of Death sequel (which is far less shocking than its predecessor). I saw I Spit on Your Grave in college, and I'd say if you must see it, see it like I did -- surrounded by friends and copious amounts of alcohol. I've actually seen A Serbian Film twice, as I felt guilty watching the bootleg version and made a promise that I'd see it legitimately if it ever played in a theater in my city, which it eventually did.
The Exorcist - who hasn't seen it? I've probably watched it a dozen times and it gets more entertaining the more I watch it, although the medical procedures do make me wince. I'm also of two minds as to which version I prefer, the theatrical or extended, as both have strong merit. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - another one I've seen many times and admire that a lot of the horror is theater of the mind, as opposed to the endless sequels. Was glad to watch a really rundown film print in a cinema that paid tribute to Tobe Hooper after he passed; gave it a real grindhouse feel. Cannibal Holocaust - I think it's a rather good movie, even if the subject matter is very niche. Plus the SA and animal cruelty can be hard to stomach. And at least it is more artful than Cannibal Ferox. I Spit on Your Grave - again, not an easy watch but it's a film I respect and can find satisfaction in seeing the graphic, earned revenge. The lack of a soundtrack adds to the atmosphere and dread. A Serbian Film - I only saw it once over a decade ago (censored at a film festival), and while I did manage to find an uncut copy, I still haven't brought myself to watch it. Mainly for THAT scene. Although I didn't see Faces (or Traces) of Death, I'm pretty sure I've seen footage or stills on websites like Rotten and Ogrish. You know, before those sites went the way of the dodo.
I thin film banning is so interesting, one time I stayed up until 3 or 4 AM reading articles on refused classification. I (unfortunately) have seen all of these except Traces of Death, just because I don't see any point in it whatsoever.
The only one I haven't seen is TRACES of Death. Never even heard of it. I also enjoyed shocking people when I merely yawned at the Serbian film. "How could you!!!" "Umm ... because it's not real. It's just a movie, and a bad one at that."
I have seen every film on this list. Including the Faces/Traces of Death sequels. I remember watching A Serbian Film twice. But the second time I saw it, it had a much shorter running time. I probably won't ever watch any of these films on the list again in the future. At least not purposefully.
The Exorcist was never officially banned. The censors advised Warners that if it was submitted for home video it would be a problem. Cannibal Holocaust was prosecuted in the early 80s in the U.K. even in a massively censored version. It’s never been passed uncut.
I've seen cannibal Holocaust (and hated it), i spit on your grave (i actually like this one), a serbian film (i actually think that this one has artistic merit that's been lost through the controversy. But at the same time jt also went too far for me to be able to enjoy that artistic merit. So i appreciate but will not be rewatching), the exorcist (what is there to say? Great film and the texas chainsaw massacre (by far my favourite movie on this list, as it's one of my favorite movies of all time. I will never get over the genius cinematography and editing in the dinner scene!). And i'm not at all interested in faces and traces of death.
Faces of Death is still cut for animal violence in the U.K. which is kind of silly as the dogfight was actually footage of two dogs playing with angry growls looped in and the monkey bashing is pretty obviously fake. When Traces of Death was released, the internet was barely a thing yet. It was banned in the U.K. along with Banned from Television.
It's funny because Tourist Trap (1979), which actually has a similar tone to TCM (1974), got a PG-rating & yet is more graphically violent than TCM... Go figure!
Tourist Trap is one of Stephen King's favorite movies. I've never seen it but I didn't think it was supposed to be like TCM. Isn't it about mannequins or a wax museum or something like that?
The Exorcist is my number one, Texas Chain Saw Massacre is my number two, and I Spit On Your Grave is difficult to watch only because it did not age well. I haven't seen the others, and I'm not in any rush to.
The thing is Cannibal Holocaust, conceptually, is an excellent film satirizing the whole cannibal film craze and exploitative film-making in general, as well as racial and cultural attitudes. The problem is the over-reliance on sexual violence and the actual animal cruelty in the film for shock value ends up undermining the message and, i believe, making it kind of hypocritical i could write an essay on my thoughts about Cannibal Holocaust

Growing up in Ireland my mam never had any problem with me watching horror at a young age, but when one of my older brothers brought a copy of "I spit on your grave" she went berserk and broke the VHS across his back, she was a gentle woman but had her breaking point, ........good times :)

It's hard to explain what seeing Faces of Death as a kid in the pre-internet 80s was like. My friend's older brother let us watch it and told us everything we saw was real. Back then there was no way to debunk that.
Technically, Linda Blair didn't film most of the controversial scenes in The Exorcist, a brilliant actress called Eileen Deitz was Blairs stand in.

I've seen them all! For Serbian Flim - you mentioned "that scene" and "you know which one"- which one??? I can think of three that I can't unsee!
I actually own this thing and sure, the baby sex part is totally repellant. However on repeat viewings (without the shock of the first viewing) the scene looks so fake and cartoonist that it's hard to take seriously. The closing few minutes are much more disgusting anyway.
I was in my 20’s in the 1970’s. I saw all the 70’s films at the drive in! 😂😂😂 Didn’t sleep for about a week after Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Personally, I found the book The Exorcist much scarier than the movie, but that’s just me. Thanks for another great video ❤️

Just to clarify with regards to the Exorcist. It was never banned in the UK. You could legally see this movie in cinemas but the director of the BBFC in the 80s prevented it from being on VHS.
When he resigned from his post it was immediately passed with an 18 for video along with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead (uncut), & other previously banned movies without hesitation.
With regard to this there was an excellent two part BBC documentary about the BBFC called 'Empire of the Censors'. It aired in the mid 90s as part of an extreme cinema weekend (titled Forbidden Weekend) and included airing The Devils, The Night Porter, Performance, Beat Girl, and Bad Taste.
It's a truly excellent doc, covering a very concise "warts and all" history.
What's most interesting is that it was made only a few years before James Ferman (director of the BBFC, and featured heavily in the doc) retired which then led to a huge relaxing in BBFC policy which meant films like Exorcist and the "video nasties" could finally be made available on home video.
As a bizarre aside, given that Ferman was ultimately responsible for so many "extreme" classics being unavailable (Exorcist, TCM, Clockwork Orange....the last goes on) he weirdly went hard to bat for Passolini's Salo (though it could only be shown in approved venues), labeling it a film of such importance that it could not be censored without damaging the intent...

If he didn’t withdraw the film then they couldn’t guarantee the safety for him or his family.
The trouble with Ferman was that he felt the working class wasn’t educated enough to differentiate what was real & what wasn’t.
Ferman was a failed American movie director who had his own editing suite at the BBFC & personally edited violent scenes, or weapons that he felt was unsuitable for the working class consumption.
When he retired the new BBFC director had it dismantled.

I can remember when Faces of Death came out, people I went to school with talked about it being real depictions of death. I was just a kid then and I thought, why would _ANYBODY_ want to watch such a thing? I've since learned, people watch all kinds of sick $h!t. I'm 60 now. Still haven't watched it and never will. Btw, I love horror movies, I just don't want to see _REAL_ deaths. I think the thing that upsets people the most about The Exorcist, is the things the young actress was exposed to. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the most disgustingly horrible movie I've ever seen. I saw it at the drive-in with a date (big mistake). I put my speaker back on the stand and rolled up the window (and asked her to do the same) so I couldn't hear the girl's screams & the chainsaw running as he chased her for what seemed like hours. I took a shower immediately after I got home b/c I felt like I was _IN_ that house and had to wash off the filth

Sorry, Christopher. It's "The Last House on the Left" that reimagines "The Virgin Spring", not "I Spit on Your Grave." Further, "The Virgin Spring" is itself a reimagining of a 13th century Swedish ballad, 'Tore's Daughters in Vange'.
Weirdly the Faces of Death series was readily available in every rental store back in the 80s in the USA. It was like the Quadruple Cheeseburger of the horror section, the thing on the menu that made you feel good about only getting a double cheeseburger in the form of Hellraiser or whatever.
I worked in a video store mid 80s to early 90s. The damn thing kept getting stolen and the owner finally stopped replacing it and refused to carry it.
Fun fact about me: my mom and I used to rent the Faces of Death movies to watch together...she was my horror mentor and she was the best!
For me, it was a Right of Passage.
When films were banned, here in the UK, it didn't really stop people from watching them. All it managed to do was force films like these to go under the counter and away from the shelves of the VHS rental stores. So if you regularly visited the shop your face would become known and this opened up the under the counter options.
I have all of these in my collection except for Traces of Death and Faces of Death which I'm not interested in. Great content Emma, thank you.

Catching up on a few of your recent videos and just wanted to say - I just bought "The Nasty" and can't wait to read it! As a big horror and comicbook fan living in Glasgow Scotland who remembers the 90s well you can imagine how delighted I was to hear that this existed (a horror comic set in my hometown - yay!) so thank you for spreading the word :)
I think two others were banned: The human centipede 2 (2011) (sorry if you is having your breakfast), and : The Hunt (2019) (if you wake up in a forest, without remembering anything, ¡Run!).
Before getting into The Texas Chainsaw Massacre I wanted to check out a few scenes on yt to make sure it's close to my vibe. I watched one or two and when I got to sleep I dreamt about it like I was in it! That terrified me but also made me want to watch the damn thing and now it's one of my fav cult classics!
Growing up in the 80s, Faces of Death was a mandatory part of every sleepover. We’d wait until the adults went to sleep & then popped it in the VCR. We then stayed up the whole night because we were totally freaked out. We always seemed to get a copy from somebody’s older brother who wore heavy metal t-shirts & leather jackets. Good times!
I’ve seen 4 of those…. I’ve got some others that were also banned in Australia but finally were released, as well as them promoting that on the cover.

Now why the hell did that maths teacher show Faces of Death to their students.. like was it the end of the year when they show movies instead of having class or was it randomly in the middle of the year, did they think it was somehow appropriate or was it on purpose 😭

As a horror fan and a film geek overall, it's very interesting to know more about horror movies that are facing issues regarding censorship. There are like a few English-language horror movies that came out in the Philippines that are either slapped with a rarely-used X-rating or banned permanently by the MTRCB. For instance, "The Shining" initially received an X-rating since its release back in 1980 and later changed into an R-16 rating years later. In 2016, "The Neon Demon" was also given an X-rating, which is rare nowadays. "Bordello of Blood" was originally rated X, but later re-rated it R-18. And as for the infamous and shock-value horror movies, films such as "Cannibal Holocaust", "The Human Centipede Trilogy", "A Serbian Film" and "Antichrist" are permanently banned in the country.

My most vivid memory of watching a movie that physically affected me was viewing “A Serbian Film” in college with no context of its content. I remember finishing it and shutting my laptop off, walking outside on the quad for an hour trying to view the scenery to scrub my mind, and then going to Taco Bell ordering a cheese quesadilla that I couldn’t finish. I still get sick on my stomach just thinking about ‘that’ scene.
I watched “I Spit on Your Grave” once as a 20 year old during a gross movie marathon when The Human Centipede 1 came out. I just couldn’t get the appeal with the SA scene, I mentally checked out. I think of ‘Revenge’ with Matilda Lutz as a palatable version of that movie.
I've seen Cannibal Holocaust,A Serbian Film, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I wasn't surprised about Cannibal and ASF, I'd heard about Chainsaw,but The Exorcist was a surprise to me. I don't blame people for deciding the first two aren't for them , especially given the animal cruelty in Cannibal and subject matter in ASF.
One thing that people never talk about when discussing A Serbian Film is the cinematography. Its such a good looking movie

The funny thing about Serbian film is everything is good and that movie from the acting to the cinematography to the color schemes it almost has like a dreamlike quality that is lacking in a lot of movies especially when their horror stories about things that could really happen not just any like ghost movies or paranormal movies and things like that. One of the very first reviews I have a read of Serbian film was about 10 years ago and the guy who did the review said that if it weren't for such horrible subject matter the movie would probably be up for several awards especially when it comes to the art side of movie making.
And it does a good job at pacing. It slowly builds the fucked up so you're always shocked at whats happening. Any lesser movie would blow it load in the beginning and the whole thing would be boring after that.
Think I've seen all of these and most of the sequels. Being an edgy highschooler in the 90's means that you had to get together with your friends and watch all the Faces/Traces of Death. I haven't seen A Serbian Film since it first became *available online, but I remember it not being as bad as I was anticipating content-wise, and was actually very artfully shot, and well-acted. Not to say it wasn't grotesque, but I was expecting something along the lines of a snuff movie. It felt more like a surreal nightmare that clearly had ambitions towards being a potent allegory for something I wasn't familiar with. It was like Salo 2.0 for me.
That comic sounds absolutely awesome. I mean, really, it ticks every single box for me and I will def be buying it. It sounds like a horror fan's growing up story from the 80's
My first part time job, when I was 15, was working at the local video shop. In those days, mid 80s, you could actually rent a video machine ( that's what we called them back in SA) and of course you had your choice of VHS or Betamax. The deal was the machine plus 2 videos, overnight rental. My mum would choose her movie and I was allowed to choose one - which meant me heading straight to the horror section. She had no probs with me watching my beloved horrors. When A Nightmare on Elm Street was released on home video, it arrived in our shop and I took it home to watch. It was still wrapped in cellophane. I must of been one of the first people to see it on home video in our town. What vivid memories. I miss those simpler times. Faces of death and Traces of death are the only ones of this list that I havent seen (yet) but I've know'd about them for years.
What I like most about Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the constant bad news on the radio in the van. Some of it , even foreshadowing the fate of the travelers. I Spit On Your Grave has that great bathtub scene .. " That feels so good it almost hurts ".

I've seen four of the films listed and those are Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit On Your Grave, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The remaining films I very much doubt I could watch. I remember Faces Of Death was "the film to see for horror fans" in the 1980's, but I couldn't do it.
The BBFC has become very relaxed since 1999 (when the people responsible for not allowing certain movies on VHS etc). The whole UK video Nasty scene is very interesting and intrigues many many people. I've watched these movies, to which the only 1 that made me go "no thank you" was "A Serbian Film". I do think this was done just to make a shock value horror movie, to which it achieved.
OMG so cool you mentioned the "A Serbian Film situation" in Brazil! I was one of the people who had tickets for the movie in the film festival. It was a festival hosted by a Brazilian company/bank, and when people heard what the movie depicted, many of the bank's clients threatened to close their accounts if the movie was shown. At the sabe time, horror fans even organized a small protest in front of the building where the Festival was taking place, but still it wasn't shown. I confess I bought the tickets because of the hype, but I didn't know how extreme it was... when I finally watched it I hated it very very much 🤣 Not my cup of tea at all, and I felt sick all night long... I draw my line a little far from that.

there's The Profit which is a docudrama about L Ron Hubbard and $cientology, which was withheld from release because it would supposedly taint a trial's outcomes about the death of a former member, and even though that trial's been over and done with since 2007 there's still legal higglety-pigglety keeping it from an official release
Unlike in many countries, there is no government cinema classification board in the US. The age restrictions are set by the motion picture association, which is a private organization. They are voluntary and have no legal enforcement.
So there is no way to ban a movie in the US, unless you can find something criminal in it and ban it from distribution that way.
Great video! I've only seen The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, and I Spit on Your Grave. Technically I was in the same room when Faces of Death was playing, but I didn't watch most of it (except for the bit with the guy and the grizzly bear, which was clearly fake and unintentionally hilarious). Serbian Film and Cannibal Holocaust are both on my "nope, never, no way" list.
The Exorcist seems tame now, but back in the 70s, some people believed the film itself was possessed by Satan.

Cannibal Holocaust is such a frustrating film for me. I really liked the partial found footage angle and the mystery of discovering what happened, but the real-life animal cruelty was just disgusting.

Thanks for the video, Emma! I´ve seen the Exorcist and The Texas chainsaw massacre - both favorites of mine. I find it so interesting that the latter have become such a symbol for video violence. Here in Sweden there are many classic moments from debate programs in the 80´s where the violence in The Texas chainsaw massacre (Motorsågsmassakern) is discussed. When I first saw it I was well over 20, and very surprised of the lack of graphic violence, despite its rumor.

I have always been too scared to watch The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massecre and need to work up the nerve. I guess it is a little ironic because I have seen Bad Boy Bubby and Hounds of Love.
I really need to give you credit for having it in to to have watched some of these movies.
I did enjoy the first half of Bad Boy Bubby. Especially up to the Rescue Missions work.
A little bit after that it became more of a sideshow itself. Somewhat losing its integrity.

I've actually seen all of them, those earlier ones in the list on VHS back in the 90s. Apart from The Exorcist, I don't feel like my life was in any way enriched by having seen them, but they were apparently what I wanted at the time. I'd certainly not recommend them to anyone else.
I'll never watch Cannibal Holocaust because of the animal cruelty being real. There was no reason for that. If he could convince people that well that he'd murdered other humans, then he could've done the same for the animals without harming them. I'm a horror junkie but I won't entertain that film.
Yeah, “Faces of Death” lost me when the bear attack was showing the family (ugh, I already didn’t want to watch this) inside of the car, then it was being shot from the outside of the car. Nobody in my living room noticed until I said, “hey , this has two cameramen!” … I shut it off

I attempted to watch "Cannibal Holocaust" once, but I only made it a few minutes in before deciding it wasn't for me.
I haven't seen "I Spit on Your Grave" for years, but I recently pulled it off my shelf and am planning on watching it again, though I remember very little. Based on your description, I'm not sure how far I'll get with it.
"The Exorcist" is, of course, a classic, but I have to say it: in my (humblest) opinion, the book is better. William Peter Blatty does a great job of balancing fiction and fact, giving honest, psychological reasons for possession.
Lastly, my favorite part of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is the fact that so many people claim they saw the hook going through the neck, even though it's not in the movie. The power of the mind is great.
I find Australian films hit hard!!! Two great movies off the top of my head, but soooo heavy. Snowtown Murders ( great filmmaking and GREAT acting ), and the same for “Revenge” . The latter being a masterclass in filmmaking.

This list was very interesting to watch. I have seen several notably banned films but there was still not much overlap between which ones I have seen and which ones are on this list.
I didn’t realize there was an original when I saw I spit on your grave. I saw the remake and it was intense but it was also very captivating and interesting. I also have seen the exorcist and while I didn’t find it that scary there are definitely nail biting moments and I enjoyed the story. I have also seen Texas chainsaw massacre and enjoyed it. The 70s vibe is honestly hilarious and I felt like while it was inferring violence like you said, it really doesn’t show anything. I enjoyed it overall

Awesome video! I always wanted to know what horror movies were banned and now I know! I'm actually not that surprised that the Exorcist was banned due to the subject matter and due to the era it came out of.
I've seen all but A Serbian Film due to hearing about that "one scene" beforehand, the Exorcist and Chainsaw are both great films. I remember seeing one called Shocking Asia as a kid that had some pretty fffed up stuff in it too.
I was surprised Irreversible wasn't on the list. I saw all but The Exorcist (sad that I've never watched it). Serbian Film was incredibly disturbing, especially that scene. It also has one of the most disturbing deaths that comes after that scene.

I remember when I first started getting into horror movies around 2006, my dad told me about how Faces Of Death was the most horrifying horror movie he had ever seen and how everything from it was real. By 2009 or so I finally seen the movie and yeah, it was pretty awful. In the terrifying way. Not scary, just disturbing.

I've seen all of them, bar TRACES OF DEATH, mostly in my much younger days as a British gorehound in the 80's, when everything was getting banned. I'm not a gorehound any more, so I don't care to rewatch most of them, except the top-tier classics like TCM & THE EXORCIST.
I have seen Texas Chainsaw (it's incredible) and The Exorcist (excellent but not as good as TTCM) and i watched half of Cannibal Holocaust but couldn't finish it i think it's the only movie to make me do this. The others i haven't seen.

It may be an urban legend, but I read that the whole Video Nasty thing kicked off in part because Ruggero Deodato, in an attempt to drum up publicity, wrote to Mary Whitehouse, pretending to be an average Joe, claiming to have been traumatised by Cannibal Holocaust. Whoops.
Have you ever watched The Devils (1971), Emma? I believe it was banned in several places, and it took quite a while to get a dvd release.
On directors that stood trial for a film they made, I think that is also true of the director who made Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom.

It had Mickey Spillane, Lady Barnett, and the interviewer was Parkinson Chat show in 1973.

Salo is a not really for me. I felt removed from the characters because of the way were depicted.

I know banned horror is not commercial but this list is the most common list of banned movies ever. There's so many others that you could have chose that some of us horror fans might not have seen. I went into Cannibal Holocaust blind as a midnight movie. I had no idea what I was getting into and regret seeing it. I absolutely cannot do animal cruelty.

I've seen all of these except Traces of Death. I've also seen the first Faces of Death sequel (which is far less shocking than its predecessor). I saw I Spit on Your Grave in college, and I'd say if you must see it, see it like I did -- surrounded by friends and copious amounts of alcohol. I've actually seen A Serbian Film twice, as I felt guilty watching the bootleg version and made a promise that I'd see it legitimately if it ever played in a theater in my city, which it eventually did.
The Exorcist - who hasn't seen it? I've probably watched it a dozen times and it gets more entertaining the more I watch it, although the medical procedures do make me wince. I'm also of two minds as to which version I prefer, the theatrical or extended, as both have strong merit.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - another one I've seen many times and admire that a lot of the horror is theater of the mind, as opposed to the endless sequels. Was glad to watch a really rundown film print in a cinema that paid tribute to Tobe Hooper after he passed; gave it a real grindhouse feel.
Cannibal Holocaust - I think it's a rather good movie, even if the subject matter is very niche. Plus the SA and animal cruelty can be hard to stomach. And at least it is more artful than Cannibal Ferox.
I Spit on Your Grave - again, not an easy watch but it's a film I respect and can find satisfaction in seeing the graphic, earned revenge. The lack of a soundtrack adds to the atmosphere and dread.
A Serbian Film - I only saw it once over a decade ago (censored at a film festival), and while I did manage to find an uncut copy, I still haven't brought myself to watch it. Mainly for THAT scene.
Although I didn't see Faces (or Traces) of Death, I'm pretty sure I've seen footage or stills on websites like Rotten and Ogrish. You know, before those sites went the way of the dodo.
I thin film banning is so interesting, one time I stayed up until 3 or 4 AM reading articles on refused classification. I (unfortunately) have seen all of these except Traces of Death, just because I don't see any point in it whatsoever.
The only one I haven't seen is TRACES of Death. Never even heard of it. I also enjoyed shocking people when I merely yawned at the Serbian film. "How could you!!!" "Umm ... because it's not real. It's just a movie, and a bad one at that."
I’ve only seen Exorcist and TCM. I can’t say I have much desire to watch the others.

I watched Faces of Death (one of them) back in the early 90s as a teen. I just remember the monkey. If you know you know. That grossed me out so bad.

I have seen every film on this list. Including the Faces/Traces of Death sequels. I remember watching A Serbian Film twice. But the second time I saw it, it had a much shorter running time. I probably won't ever watch any of these films on the list again in the future. At least not purposefully.
The Exorcist was never officially banned. The censors advised Warners that if it was submitted for home video it would be a problem. Cannibal Holocaust was prosecuted in the early 80s in the U.K. even in a massively censored version. It’s never been passed uncut.

I've seen cannibal Holocaust (and hated it), i spit on your grave (i actually like this one), a serbian film (i actually think that this one has artistic merit that's been lost through the controversy. But at the same time jt also went too far for me to be able to enjoy that artistic merit. So i appreciate but will not be rewatching), the exorcist (what is there to say? Great film and the texas chainsaw massacre (by far my favourite movie on this list, as it's one of my favorite movies of all time. I will never get over the genius cinematography and editing in the dinner scene!). And i'm not at all interested in faces and traces of death.
Faces of death was made by a Disney camera man as a side project.
Faces of Death is still cut for animal violence in the U.K. which is kind of silly as the dogfight was actually footage of two dogs playing with angry growls looped in and the monkey bashing is pretty obviously fake. When Traces of Death was released, the internet was barely a thing yet. It was banned in the U.K. along with Banned from Television.

It's funny because Tourist Trap (1979), which actually has a similar tone to TCM (1974), got a PG-rating & yet is more graphically violent than TCM... Go figure!
and Tobe Hooper had wanted a PG rating for TCM, lol

Tourist Trap is one of Stephen King's favorite movies. I've never seen it but I didn't think it was supposed to be like TCM. Isn't it about mannequins or a wax museum or something like that?

I've seen all of these, my video store back in the day had Faces Of Death in the porno section along with tattoo movies...
The Exorcist is my number one, Texas Chain Saw Massacre is my number two, and I Spit On Your Grave is difficult to watch only because it did not age well.
I haven't seen the others, and I'm not in any rush to.
The thing is Cannibal Holocaust, conceptually, is an excellent film satirizing the whole cannibal film craze and exploitative film-making in general, as well as racial and cultural attitudes. The problem is the over-reliance on sexual violence and the actual animal cruelty in the film for shock value ends up undermining the message and, i believe, making it kind of hypocritical i could write an essay on my thoughts about Cannibal Holocaust
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my pick of this litter - the best horror film of all time! RIP Tobe Hooper.
