I was just headed down here to mention how surprised I am that ‘Speak No Evil’ didn’t make the list. I’ve seen your other video (maybe it is in a few of your vids, I dunno, I’ve just seen the one) reviewing this movie, but I think it should still be here on this list. It was easily the most disturbing thriller I saw in 2022.
However, and as always, I appreciate the other recs. About to start ‘Downloading Nancy’.
The only film on this list that I’ve seen is ‘Soft And Quiet’, and I’m afraid unfortunately that movie was overhyped for me and didn’t have the same impact a lot of other people seem to be experiencing.
Did you see ‘You Won’t Be Alone’? I really enjoyed it and think you might too.

This is a WONDERFUL list! Thank you, Emma! I haven´t watched any film of this list, but I love your suggestions, so...Binge watching on the way! Also, I have a couple of suggestions of disturbing dramas, more than thrillers: 1994 Oleanna by David Mamet (based on a play written by himself) left me speechless and 1997 Bent, starring Clive Owen are both quite intense and interesting a nobody talks about them!

Thanks for the list, Emma. When it comes to films that are dark and disturbing, I just can't compete with you. 😉 That being said, I will admit that I have seen "Soft & Quiet", but that is the only one from your list that I have seen. I am curious about 2LDK, since it is a Japanese thriller, and we know how insanely different they can be. Here are a couple of titles I came up with that are plenty disturbing (at least to me):
ALL EYES (2022) - Low budget thriller, but it delivers on its twisted monster premise.
A RECORD OF SWEET MURDERER (2014) - South Korean found footage thriller that gets really twisted.
THE INFERNAL MACHINE (2022) - Guy Pearce stars in this disturbing thriller of an author hiding from an obsessive fan.

Soft and Quiet was easily the most uncomfortable I have felt in quite a while, perhaps only matched by Speak No Evil but for different reasons. Possibly this film is more upsetting but I won't say why for fear of spoiling. Powerful and confrontational cinema, amazing performances, brilliantly shot and edited. Not for everyone and not one I want to watch again, but very well done. Saw it two weeks ago and its still with me. I did however want to take a long hot shower afterwards.

I wasn't sure what to expect from the movie since I went in completely blind but boy...that was one uneasy watch which got darker and more disturbing with every few minutes. My recommendation for this kind of movie would be a 2018 indie film called The Swerve. This is the kind of film that kind of hurts your feelings, in that you get caught up in one person's slow descent into madness and despair. It feels subjective and kind of devastating. Not for those who are already having a bad day. Strong elements of psychological horror. It's available for free on many platforms, including Tubi and Amazon Prime.

What you mention about U Want Me to Kill Him? (haven't seen yet) seeming like an after school special or lifetime movie, I definitely felt that seemingly wholesome & on the nose delivery with the movie Found, which I discovered from you actually and I know is a favorite of yours. With the first act or so I was almost wondering if I had played the wrong movie or misunderstood the recommendation. Then by the climax & final shot, lol, it definitely gains its place on these lists.
    * The final shot of Soft & Quiet is really interesting also, I suppose the last few frames of the continuous shot/movie. Survival! Resilience!

2LDK was part of The Duel Project a challenge to directors Yukihiko Tsutsumi and Ryûhei Kitamura (of Versus and Midnight Meat Train fame) to make a film staring only 2 Actors battling, 1 Location and completed in 1 week. The 2 movies were very different. I saw them years back on DVD which in the UK was released on Artificial Eye I believe, which is now Curzon. I love these lists.

I just watched Howard’s Mill yesterday. Has anyone seen this movie? It’s AMAZING. I can’t stop thinking about it. Couldn’t find anyone talking about it on UA-cam.

Thanks Emma. I actually have not watched most of rhese yet, though a few were on my list. I actually may see Soft and Quiet tonight, as I always love an unpredictable narrative and the best kind of recommendation is when someone says absolutely nothing but "go in as blind as possible"

Hippopotamus sounds intriguing because it reminded me of The Collector (1965).

Last night I watched an Australian movie called "Killing Ground." Definitely a disturbing (and suspenseful) film. I've also seen "Profile" and enjoyed it very much. Thanks, Emma, for all the other recommendations!
