Hi friends, thank you for those who politely corrected me in the comments, I make a major boo boo putting Man Bites Dog in here, although the film is in French it’s from Belgium. My apologies. Appreciate you correcting me when I make these mistakes. 🤘🏼
Man Bites Dog (definitely among the absolute best found footage/mockumentary genre as well) is such a great and raw film, Emma, let's just say it's an honorary entry on the list 😊😀
I was gonna say wait where is AntiChrists because I always assumed it was a french film because everything about it is similar to the themes and filming styles of french extremity films and because well Charlotte Gainsbourg is like the french macabre queen! But since it is not I'm wondering now have you covered AntiChrists and if so which category of film did you or would you put it in?
Hi Emma! No need to apologize. Your list is very good and you make a real effort to write the original title. It's not a big thing. 7 Days is not a "French" film, it's french canadian, from Quebec, just up north the US. We have great filmmakers but we are not known for horror. So I would say it's more an anomaly than being part of the French extreme wave. In that regard I feel Man bites Dog feels more "french" than 7 days.
I’d like this comment but then it wouldn’t be 69 anymore, so if anyone else likes @HellKnight20 comment, like mine instead... Do or don’t, I won’t lose any sleep over it, comparatively to these French horror films
Calvaire is a "Franco-Belge" production (as for Grave/Raw for example). For the nationality of a movie only production nationalities are used. But Man bites dog is a full belgian production indeed.
Irreversible was so uncomfortable to watch because of the extended assault, the sound was so off I couldn’t hear them speak a word, and the movie went in reverse. It’s hard to watch.
I remember watching Martyrs with a friend of mine. We were 20/21 and knew nothing about it, only that our local video stores wouldn't carry it, which made us want to see it even more. It's still the most violent film I've ever seen, to this day ten years later! Definitely messed up.
Martyrs was brutal. I felt my soul died after I watched it. Not for the faint of heart. I've only seen about 3 or 4 movies on this list so I'm gonna check more out. Thanks!
I loved Incident In A Ghostland, goes under a lot of people's radar. Although I'm Scottish I grew up in France. It was a shock to see Mylène Farmer in the movie, I was so used to hearing her on the radio, she is a very well known French singer.

I have to agree with you, this is often something that annoys me when people talk about “French” films. Are we talking country or language? There’s so many Belgian films with French dialogue, but automatically everyone thinks it’s a film out of France. Upsetting tbh.
I’m sorry, I’ll look into this. I also included Canada so it’s not limited to the country but yes sorry they were listed as French extremity in my research

You finally saw Calvaire/The Ordeal! I recommended this film to you multiple times a long time ago. This film needs to be discussed. Is it about obsession in the strangest possible way? Also, that piano scene is bonkers and totally genius! Good luck getting that movie out of your head. I still can’t.
Watched Irreversible the other day and that droning rumour actually seems true. I never get nauseous during horror movies and can usually handle a lot but I literally gagged at that first death scene and felt sick to my stomach.
Man Bites dog is a Belgian movie. Filmed by some students from my school. Watch the uncut European version (french spoken), they cut down the real disturbing part for international viewing.
I love High Tension, it was actually one of the first pretty hardcore horror films I'd seen as a teen. I like the ending, tho I can see why it would piss some folks off. Also love the use of Muse in the soundtrack! Pitch perfect.
Incident at Ghostland is actually a really tragic film. The whole crew got sued (director, producer) because the blonde girl's face got split open during a scene where a mirror breaks, and it LITERALLY ruined her life and career. What is even worse is, they kept the scene in the film AND a great many people think the box art (even though it is not same girl) is sort of playing up the actresses injury (as the poster is a picture of a girl with literally, a split face). Adds some real darkness to an already messed up flick.
Just a side note. You mentioned The Gift. I watched it one night on your recommendation. It was so tense I had to stop it about a third in and finish it during the day. Incredible. Thank you.
I don’t know if anyone has seen the movie Dans ma peau, but it’s about a woman who has disassociation from her own body and self harms, it’s extremely disturbing but also a heartbreaking story, and I think it’s a great movie
Thanks for giving a shout out to Ryan Hollinger - he is, like you, a favorite UA-cam "artiste"!😉 I watch these videos because I trust your opinion -you have the same odd taste. More movies to add to 🖤The List🖤!!!
"Why else would you be here?" I honestly don't know. I don't watch the movies. I just watch your channel and then look up detailed synopses. I'm fascinated by horror but can't directly indulge in it much.
Me too! I usually love horror but I’ve been working from home and don’t want to watch anything in full when my partner is gone all day 😂 I can’t handle the stress. And I’ve never been good with sexual violence on screen
Amazing list Emma! My son is about the same age as the kid in Climax and it chilled me to the bone. It's an amazing film but I could never watch it ever again!
As a Canadian I would love recommendations for more Canadian horror 😊 I’m a fan of the zombie films Pontypool and Les Affamés but I need some recommendations in other sub-genres of horror! I love how you highlight films from so many different countries 💜
Finally someone mentions Il's. I think that it and Eden Lake share a similar theme, but Il's is terrifying. I have seen some of the films on this list. Inside really creeped me out because of it's atmosphere. I have seen Calvaire and Sheitan, although neither of them bothered me really. High Tension is just gory and has a nonsensical ending. "Ils" claims to be a real story but if you watch it, you can tell it cannot be. There are scenes where everyone invloved dies, so nobody would know what happened...Saying it is based on real events and people, is just gimmick.
I've never forgotten Irreversible for 3 key reasons. The first is I can't even begin to guess how they did the practical effects for the fire extinguisher scene, you see every hit and the face gradually collapse and disintegrate without the camera ever panning away or cuts. Insane. The second is actually a mistake. A crew member ACCIDENTALLY walked into how during the tunnel scene, realised his mistake, and quickly exited the way he had entered. It made the already brutal scene even more impactful because what we see is a bystander walk in on the rape and rather than help in any way, just leave. This was early enough that she could have definitely survived has he intervened. The third is just the final message - LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT - which translated as "time destroys everything" or "time destroys all things"....like a decade later I still think of that quote sometimes because it is so depressingly true. There is nothing in this Universe that will not be eventually destroyed by time, including the actual Universe itself.
I’ve yet to see a French horror film that wasn’t disturbing. They know how to do it. The twist in High Tension is beyond ridiculous but the film is still definitely worth seeing.
I specifically watched this video faster than usual because I was hoping you'd talk about High Tension. I know it's divisive but I LOVE IT! It made me an Alexandre Aja stan. Lol
I have only seen 3 movies on this list! I hear you constantly talking about Martyrs and Irreversible and I haven't gotten to them yet... I don't know what I'm waiting for...
Sombre from philippe grandrieux also gets overlooked a lot its a pretty strange film but one of the first films in the movement even before it was coined, a must watch in my opinion
This is a fantastic list Emma! I've seen a few of them, Hidden (Cache) and High Tension being totally unforgettable! While I didn't care for Climax, I loved the opening 30 minutes with the dance scene!
Another superb vid Emma. I looove French Extremity. I think the country doesn't matter; it's the language that makes it FE. At the outset of the video you mentioned "...titles you couldn't repeat on YT." What were those? You've piqued my curiosity....'Baise Moi? maybe?
I'm so glad you picked Calvaire : one of my favourite horror movies. Trouble every day is a movie I've watched once and will never watch again. The cannibals succombing to their pulsion gives incredibly hard to watch scenes.
I've seen all of these but it's really nice to watch a video and learn some trivia I didn't know. And you present in such interesting fashion. What a great channel!
Whenever I see lists about Final Girls, I'm always deadly suprised that Yasmine from Frontier(s) doesn't make an appearance. She is easilly the most OP final girl I can think of for all she witnesses and endures. She just accesses a primitive survival mode which almost looks like her fight and flight response in autopilot. I lay my supplications at that characters feet anytime I need to bite down on the mouth piece and persevere.
As a french i can say that is a great list!Martyrs and Irreversible are my favorite.Did you also watch the movie Twentynine Palms from Bruno Dumont? The ending is quite shocking....
Emma I just went back and watched Incident in a Ghostland, which somehow fell through the cracks. I thought it was a pretty brilliant film. Thanks for your continued explorations! Eyes Without a Face.........................
Excellent list Emma... I have almost all of these on DVDs or Blu-ray. But I am sad that you left off the films that lie at the roots of the French horror, namely Eyes Without A Face/Les Yeux Sans Visage from 1960 and DIabolique 1955, which influenced Psycho. I first saw Les Yeux Sans Visage in 1990 in New York among an ultra hip audience. There were screams and laughter at the same time. I just know you haven't seen this yet... Why? Another film that would fit is Baby Blood (1990). Also 13 Tzameti. But no Eyes Without A Face? My head is buried in my hands. (Until you finally see it.) Thanks Emma.
Wow I've got every film on ur list apart from 4 of them!!!! Brilliant TopTen as always and nice to see someone choosing films from different backgrounds and non-English speaking peoples
I'm still not sure how to feel about the ending of High Tension, but it doesn't matter too much since it is definitely one of the best Horror films I've seen.
The last one , Les 7 jours du Talion is from Quebec, it is in french but is not French =p And the movie is based on the book of the same tittle from Patrick Sénécal who is a horror writer from Quebec
I bought Incident in A Ghostland blind and I love it.I purchased Climax after seeing your review of it.Martyrs is an assault on the senses and leaves you unnerved for days.
"Martyrs, Frontiers, haute tension, inside" these ones are the best I've ever seen, the atmosphere of these movies is so on point, movie is good as long as you can still remember and I remember these ones so clearly in my mind
thank you very much for this new video this is so cool and awesome in the best thing ever and this is so good and I like this end I cannot wait for more like this 😇
I’m from Quebec, Canada! "7 jours du talion" is sooo good. It’s based from a book by the same name by a french canadian author named "Patrick Sénécal". He’s like our Stephen King here haha
I was so into High Tension UNTIL the end. I just hated it. I've even wanted to watch it again, but then I remember the ending and I pass. I live Revenge too, it was much less exploitative than I thought it would be. BTW, I have to hit like after I hear "Let's talk spooky stuff"
The thing you will notice in High Tension if you watch it again, is that the very first line foreshadows and explains the ending, but it's impossible to spot on first viewing.
i have dyslexia and i find it so hard to read the subtitles and know what going on at the same time :( i feel like im missing out on some really good movies
Great video. The Lamphouse did a deep dive into the representational aspect of almost all of these movies. If you like these movies and wanted to dig into the meaning of them, I highly recommend that video.
Man Bites Dog, Eyes Without a Face and Irreversible for me...that being said they are all in my 20 favourite films of all time! Really want to watch Martyrs but just struggling to get my hands on it currently ☹
@@toxicsugarart2103 I have Shudder via the Amazon app & it's not available there for me. I have only ever seen it as VOD here in California, at least a year or two. I'd love to stream it though.

I've seen all of these but it's really nice to watch a video and learn some trivia I didn't know. And you present in such interesting fashion. What a great channel!
Yyeees. You tailor made this video for me, did you? 😁😁
All you're lists are amazing!...there's always so much stuff I never heard of...And ive seen quite abit of stuff!...
Love the genre and looove your videos! 🥰
Thank you for doing this Emma! So much stuff on this list I want to see!
Emma I just went back and watched Incident in a Ghostland, which somehow fell through the cracks. I thought it was a pretty brilliant film. Thanks for your continued explorations!
Eyes Without a Face.........................
Subscribed, liked and notified! You had me at disturbing French Horror.
Eyes Without a Face (Les Yeux sans visage) - (1960) Directed by the legend Georges Franju.
I love your videos. Can you add the movie titles in your description? Or maybe I’m missing them somewhere.
Hey! The reason I don’t do this is because then people don’t actually watch a video, if I did this I’d be better off doing a blog.
Cache is one of the best films I have ever seen. Michael Haneke is a genius.
I agree with you, it´s a masterpiece!
It's my favorite movie too! I love it so much.
I have this film but have yet to watch it. What is wrong with me?
@@WJames-vk2kp Idk. Drop everything, and watch Cache. It will change the way you look at film altogether. You will never be the same.
Honestly, every single one of his films is incredible.
Thanks again, Emma! Great list. I'll watch a couple of these for my 31 days of horror!
Also that scene in Frontiers when they are in the tunnel trying to escape freaks me the fuck out
I loved the video! But I have a question, where do I can find / watch the movies? Pleeeeeeeeeeeease
It depends on your country!
I missed watching your horror recs Emma! I swear I'm so excited for this list!❤ Anyway, outstanding videos as always!👍☺
Thank you!!! :)
You're more than welcome!☺
"Martyrs, Frontiers, haute tension, inside" these ones are the best I've ever seen, the atmosphere of these movies is so on point, movie is good as long as you can still remember and I remember these ones so clearly in my mind
thank you very much for this new video this is so cool and awesome in the best thing ever and this is so good and I like this end I cannot wait for more like this 😇
Excellent list, happy that you added Trouble every day, not many people know about it. but its great movie with awesome music by Tindersticks.
hi love your vids ❤️
I’m from Quebec, Canada! "7 jours du talion" is sooo good. It’s based from a book by the same name by a french canadian author named "Patrick Sénécal". He’s like our Stephen King here haha
im from Quebec too
Moi aussi.
None of these films were as hard core as they were made out to be. Not a one.
Really want to watch Martyrs but just struggling to get my hands on it currently ☹
oliver hyde Martyrs is on Shudder (at least it is in Canada, not sure if it’s different in other countries). I also love Eyes Without a Face!
@@toxicsugarart2103 I have Shudder via the Amazon app & it's not available there for me. I have only ever seen it as VOD here in California, at least a year or two. I'd love to stream it though.
I watched on Popcorn Time kinda illegal but oh well hahaha
I rented it on youtube for under $10 I believe
You can just buy martyrs off Amazon,
Thanks sis I was having trouble completing 31 days of horror since I was running out of ideas and were to lookç
Calvaire is one of my favorites of this list! It´s amazing!!!
Thanks a bunch for this list! I really like several movies on this list and found some I haven't seen. Is there a subgenre of these french extemity(?) films that are seprated from body horror(which I don't like)?
