    With August Underground, I actually used to work for Toe Tag Pictures when I lived in Pittsburgh. The 3rd one (Penance) was partly filmed at my house (home invasion scene). The woman in that scene was my wife at the time. I even helped on that one while I worked for them.

      Fred Vogle seems like kinda a chill dude. I had a phase when I watched all of these sick films and I have full understanding that you have to separate the content from the creators (with a few exceptions like Lucifer Valentine for example). But these films are still insanely disturbing.
      How do the people working on these films justify it's content? What motivates the creation of a film like that? The special effects and acting in that trilogy is amazing for such an indie project so even though the film is very disturbing there is clearly a lot of real talent and passion behind it.

      @@1337Figaro Fred and his wife Shelby are some of the nicest people you could ever meet. Fred is like a big teddy bear. At the time of August Underground, found footage films were all the rage and Faces of Death type Mockumentaries were making a omeback, and very inexpensive to make. His whole purpose of the trilogy was to generate enough money for the movie he really wanted to make, The Redsin Tower. When the first August Underground came out, for marketing, he was gonna place VHS copies of the film around Pittsburgh, as a true, but yet fake, found footage film. That was his main purpose, an actual found footage film. But then 911 happened, so he decided, highly , against it after that.

      It's funny, because the rest of the trilogy is so bloody and graphic, but I found that scene in Penance to be the most disturbing out of any of the series. Kudos to you, your wife, and Fred. I'm not easy to unsettle, but that scene did it.

      @diesemautokerl2181 Um... no? Megan is Missing is found footage, not body horror. Torture and body horror aren't the same thing, body horror is more about transformation and mutilation and where the line lies of no longer being human. Also, Megan is Missing is a stupid movie that tries to make up for its stupidity by having an extremely graphic ending.

    • @markalexander3659
      @markalexander3659 2 місяці тому +6

      I'm not sure about that. Megan is Missing would be on a top layer for most people as it's really not disturbing. Besides being a terrible movie in every way, it's very tame. Like, it's only got a reputation because a load of teenagers on tiktok who have barely even seen horror movies before found it disturbing.

    • @davidci
      @davidci 2 місяці тому +8

      @@markalexander3659 I'd say the movie is disturbing because it's based on actual scenarios that have happened in real life. • @markalexander3659

      @@davidci I think it's mainly the shot of Megan in the barrel that a lot of people didn't like. People don't like seeing peoples faces fucked up especially. Like a lot of young people found The Ring disturbing for the same reason. I think the CONCEPT of (I forget her name) having to get IN there with her friends body is disturbing, but I was so BORED by that point, plus the acting, directing, editing etc all being so terrible. I think it IS because the people typically watching it were so naive to horror or anything "disturbing". It's the point of reference. Like, reminds me of the Video Nasties thing in the UK. In 1984, they had a bunch of conservative Christians who hadn't seen a horror movie since the 60s watch stuff like The Evil Dead and I Spit on Your Grave and of course THEY freaked out and banned 70+ movies because to THEM it was a huge shock.

      There's a several cuts available that either reduce or removes the animal cruelty if you're interested - one of them sponsored by the director himself who has expressed regret over the animal cruelty. I only say that because the movie itself - despite its reputation - is surprisingly cogent in what it's actually trying to say. There's an actual message there. And the animal deaths were supposed to be in service of that message. Obviously they missed the mark there and there is no excuse for it. I will never watch the original cut again - if I ever choose to watch it again. But there is some context there that most people miss when discussing this movie. I was surprised by it. I'm not saying go out and watch it but maybe give the wiki a look.

    Frontier(s)
    Spoorloos
    Eden Lake
    What Keeps You Alive
    I Saw The Devil
    Mientras Duermes
    Except the first one, which is pure disturbing horror, the other ones blur the line between horror and psychological thrillers, but they all stayed with me for weeks of how disturbing they were. Cheers from Portugal.

The only thing that disturbed me in some way was footage of real life operations intercut with some weird woman eating noodles (or were they worms???) and then her head goes all shaky from side to side! I've watched most the movies on this list but one movie I couldn't stomach was 'Headless' (2015). I realised quite early on it was just going to be sadistic, mean spirited murders with no plot for an hour and a half and couldn't put myself through it.
    The movie that disturbed me the most though was Barton Fink. Rather than graphic violence like most of these movies, that one affected me psychologically. Something about the ending completely spun my mind and made me incredibly anxious for a good while after.

    first of all: i always love your editing and the way you articulate stuff. it's so comfy to watch! even when the themes and content being discussed is freaky as hell.
    now, something that really bothers me with these icebergs is that, the deeper you get, it always seem to delve into pure, indigest, rapey mysogynistic stuff with no redeeming qualities at all. i swear some of these directors are just edgelord incels and vitriolic towards women and other minorities to even THINK that such stories could have any kind of entertainment value whatsoever... but, in the end, if there's an audience, there will always be those kinds of "films". it says a lot. i'm not trying to be judgy, or a prude, or a gatekeeper: i love disturbing horror, i love psychologically challenging stuff! i even think movies like "saló", for example, have actually meaningful stuff to convey to an audience willing to be challenged; pasolini himself was very public about his discontent with society (and how he perceveid it as a queer man in the 60s and 70s). but those deeper-level iceberg movies itch me in a very wrong way. they seem to portray their characters - specially women - in a very disturbing light for shock value alone. i'm actually glad that your experience with "engineering red" was not at all that bad 'cause frankly, sometimes, enough is enough. these conversations should be held more frequently in the horror community imo

      It's as unbearably beautiful as it is unbearably horrifying. I consider it, maybe not the most "disturbing" film I've ever seen, but WAY up there for me. It definitely affected me, mentally and emotionally, far more than any other film on this list or all the other "disturbing" film lists. The close-up tight shots of all the characters, especially Flyora as he goes through his "transformation", are incredible. It's far too beautiful, real, and historical to be in the same lists as most of these other films. Not that I can't appreciate the others. They're simply different sorts of entities. This film actually left me in a deep funk for over a week. Some films have done that to me for a day or few, but not almost 2 weeks. For me, that's impressive.

    I've seen most of the films on this list and many others. I'm not easily disturbed. Out of all of them, the one that affected me the most, BY FAR, was "Come and See". It isn't gory, nor does it show many graphic on screen deaths. It's the serious subject matter, style and atmosphere, sound design, cinematography, and acting. MY GOD the acting! The fact that this film was based on true events, and the fact that many of the extras were older people who ACTUALLY lived through the sort of events depicted, then willingly reenacted it, just makes it feel so real. It's genuinely one of the best films I've ever seen. It also disturbs me more than any gory body horror splatter-fest ever could. I wept bitter tears for humanity. It left me in a dark funk for over a week.
    HIGHLY recommended! It's the kind of film you watch once, and then either never again, or a decade later. If you go into it like a challenge, thinking it won't affect you, it likely won't have the intended effect. You have to understand the historical context and the fact that this is like a window into one of MANY rural villages in the former Soviet Union that experienced the events shown in the film. I think the fact that I watched for the first time in my 30s, instead of when I was an edgy 17 year old, made the impact far greater for me. Without life experience, it's hard to truly appreciate just how horrific the events in this movie really are, and really were, in real life. You can find the whole movie, for free, on UA-cam. It's the first result when you search "Come and See".
    A quote from one of the filmmakers, I think the director, was something akin to "Whatever is shown in this film, and however horrifying it seems, what actually happened was much, much worse."

    I was very disturbed a long time ago by ”Sweet Movie”, a bizarre comedy/drama by Dusan Makavejev, mostly because of long part with a viennese art commune doing disgusting things (and it’s for real), but also other scenes. I didn’t find it funny. ”Tumbling Doll Of Flesh” - I couldn’t make it through that one. The problem with many ”disturbing” films are most of the time that they’re really bad movies. You just can’t go on watching trash. Most directors aren’t Lars von Trier.

    Emma, have you ever seen, or talked about, a 2005 film called Chaos? I myself have not seen it, but I remember there being a lot of controversy and discussion surrounding it when it came out, due in large part to a scathing, zero-star review by Roger Ebert. If I remember correctly, it was meant to be a sort of unofficial remake of Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left, which Mr. Ebert famously championed. I was 8 when FACES OF DEATH was released and the controversy was insane! There was no Internet, no FRIDAY THE 13th films, no CHUCKY, no FREDDY KRUGER, HALLOWEEN came out that same year. People lost their MINDS over Faces of Death. Being only 8yrs old I obviously didn't see it, but the newspaper ads ALONE made me nervous, the giant skull, the warning: "ABSOLUTELY NO ONE UNDER 18 WILL BE ADMITTED TO THIS FILM!!" My imagination went crazy trying to imagine what this movie was all about. When I finally saw it, all I can say is it was such a mixed bag: the few actual REAL scenes were disturbing, but the fake stuff was hilariously bad!! Maybe my expectations made this movie impossible to live up to, but CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is much worse in my opinion. But, FACES OF DEATH actually launched a small franchise, it was so BEYOND controversial people couldn't help but go see it, it made $35million worldwide on a $450,000 budget. It was a midnight movie staple for YEARS!
