Title is bullshit.
Only movies I consider disturbing and depraved are the obvious ones like...
A Serbian Film
Cannibal Holocaust
The ones that I dont think you would be able to stomach are...
The August Underground (the whole trilogy)
Guinea Pig (the whole collection)
Nekromantic
An honourable mention from our little country, Britain...called Mum and Dad. That one doesn't get enough love. Don't get mixed up with the American one.
I was a projectionist at a small independent cinema in the early 90s and showed Boxing Helena. Fun seeing people's faces as they exited the theater, wondering what the hell they just witnessed. Good times. 😁
Haha I love this
I bet 😆
Hahaha that's fantastic.
haha it probably wasn't your theater but I did this at the movies back in the day. I loved the concept but found it to be pretty dull.
I facepalmed at the end lol.
My heart breaks for Julian Sands. He's been missing since January 13, 2023 and I doubt he'll be found alive. So sad.
I Didn't know that wow
@@brockgangell5759 He went hiking on Mount Baldy in California and never returned.
@@shellraiser1113 the poor bloke it sounds like he might not be found, given the amount of time passed! Thanks for letting me know mate
@@brockgangell5759 You're welcome
I never see anyone mention Mysterious Skin with JGL. It is extremely well done, and I don’t know if I could ever watch it again. A young boy is obsessed with alien abductions, believing he was a victim. Another boy struggles with drugs and begins hustling. When their paths cross, the tragic event that links them is reviled.
I haven’t watched it since the days of Netflix by mail, but it still lives in my head.
Yes! I think about this film all the time
You hammered the nail the head! That movie seriously messed me up! I made my husband watch it and he was mad at me for a week!
100% I think I saw that and Happiness around the same time which is another fun watch!
@@gidgetmaurer123 Happiness is one I still need to watch.
Great film!! Omg - great cast, acting, film work. I miss the old IFC days.
But this movie is NOT A HORROR MOVIE. there is an important distinction between gritty, human based, existential coming of age storytelling, and HORROR. Again - I LOVE this movie, but it's not horror. You need to learn the difference. Let me give u a quick walk-through: John Milton, Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert W Chambers, Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, George A Romero, John Carpenter, Stuart Gordon, Victor Miller, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, William Friedken, David Cronenberg, Clive Barker, Don Coscarelli, Ari Aster, etc...these are different than Stanely Cubrik or Martin Scorsese, or Howard storm.
Kudos for featuring "Boxing Helena." ! It seemed to be part of a string of disturbing "body horror" films of the early-mid '90's: " Killing Zoe," "The Doom Generation," "7", "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", and to a degree "The Crying Game." All had the same bleak, industrial lighting and disturbing imagery. Solid vid.
Great list! Personally I find real life far more traumatic than any movie.
Sameeee, but unfortunately a lot of these are based on real events
@@spookyastronauts like return of the living dead from 1985 based on orange yellow chemical dow company created for the us army it was later used by farmers in new Zealand 😎
That's why I need horror movies to see people in deeper sh** than me lol
@@spookyastronautsi didn’t watch all of your video yet. Was going in blind watching treatment. PLEASE tell me that wasn’t true 😢
Yessss Boxing Helena. I love that film. I think it's so much more clever than people give it credit for. All the people that give Lynch shit for it should apologize. I mean she was only 19 when she wrote it
There's a very excellent commentary track that's on UA-cam (or was not very long ago). It was only on the fucking laser disc, so I hadn't heard it before. It's a fun listen.
I recently watched They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). When it was over, I was staring blankly at the TV, and my friend was asking me if I was okay. It is a phenomenal film though, and also one of the best acted films I have seen. I'm debating whether or not it is now my new favorite film.
Nine Academy Award nominations. Gig Young won for Best Supporting Actor; later murdered his wife and committed suicide.
@@geraldmartin7703
Yeah, tragic.
Eden Lake (2008) was a gut-wrenching watch for me. Walked away from it with a heaviness in my gut. BIG reccommend.
Love eden lake!
Dogtooth by Yorgos messed me up. It’s never left me after your recommendation. Thanks for always leaving a lasting impression with these lists 😊
Are used to love boxing Helena! Always had a special place in my heart for Julian Sands. I haven’t seen it mentioned in the comments anywhere or in your video about him being missing right now and that the outlook is not good… So sad.
I didn’t know! I saw some other comments though, very sad
The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover. Helen Mirren’s best role! This film has completely slipped into oblivion and it’s time to resurrect it!
I did a whole video on this movie! So wild!!! ua-cam.com/video/Wz095o71Ab4/v-deo.html
@@spookyastronauts Oh damn, sorry I missed that one! Thanks for the link😎
Love that one. Saw it twice in the theater, and both times an older couple got up and walked out during the first 15 minutes.
The treatment is based on the jack Caffery series by Mo Hayder. The books are so dark and disturbing. If you loved the treatment please read Birdman.
Oooo eeek!!!
I have often wondered why Boxing Helena never makes these lists. There is truly no other movie like it out there.
I finally watched Boxing Helena and I’m kind of obsessed. It’s SO bad and SO GOOD. I don’t know. It just hits so right for my sense of humor.
It was an interesting flick. What he's did to her was insane
I saw Boxing Helena back as a teenager. I loved how absolutely bonkers it would get. I eventually found The Misfits song by the same name, written as a reference to the film. I'm definitely going to need to look into the rest of the list. I've heard of some in passing, but others are new to me.
Man Bites Dog was a pretty disturbing movie that doesn't get mentioned much. Its portrayal of the socio/psychopathic main character is chilling. Not exactly a horror movie but scary when you think about people who are this way in the and worse real world. And it was one of the earlier movies I can think of that popularized the "found footage" style of filmmaking.
Big fan of Man Bites Dog. Such a good dark comedy and very ahead of it's time.
Love this movie.
I'd recommend Exhibit A. It's found footage and has a slow creepy build with a very disturbing ending. I would really like to see a list of your top favorite found footage movies. Great work Emma! I love and LIKE every video! And am a Patreon member. You rock!
Loved that one! Very underrated
Oh m god, yes. I never see people mention this one!
120 days of sodom is tremendous
The description for this sounds like The 7th Continent
My sister was playing a German song and I asked her where is this song from, she said "The Jeffrey Dahmer Netflix show" and I was NOOOOOOOOO it's from "Boxing Helena" so we rewatch it together and she was like "why is my brother so fucked up since young"
Love and support from Singapore 🇸🇬❤️
Your Sincerely, Christopher Roman
Recommend watching last house on the left from the 70s 😊
@@mikesilva3868 I've seen it but there's one film that the father of rape in revenge, it's "The Virgin Spring" (1960)
@@RomanYew that is a good movie too😎
I recommend Home Movie. It starts as a found footage movie where the father is recording different family holidays and gets dark fast. It's on shudder if you want to see a disturbing film.
Martyrs, Possum and Irreversible. Thank you Emma for this compiled list. Just added to my watchlist two of those mentioned.
Yes to Possum. Some truly disturbing imagery there, and the whole tone seems so very very WRONG
Martyrs and Irreversible are 2 of my all-time favourites.
Possum is such an underrated movie about some extremely heavy topics.
Thank you for the recommendations. We all hope you continue to make more amazing content
Always love your disturbing movies lists. I'd completely forgotten I'd watched Miss Violence (though I don't know how that's possible). Looking forward to checking the other ones out!
Thank you so much Emma
Love the video and please recommend more films like this 😊😊😊
You FINALLY mentioned The Treatment! Great film! I told you to watch it multiple times way back when I first discovered your content.
Ema thanks for this lists.
They are rare yet necessary.. there are times and people that do need this lists. It’s so easy at times to go through life as a zombie pretending to not see any of the wrong around us and it’s a waste of a life, it is helpful at times to be disturbed in order to find our own solutions and in the best case consciously help ourselves and those around us to become better people. At least this films have a potential message, don’t be nor feed the sickness of humanity
Emma you were not kidding about The Treatment. It's been three days and I'm not over it yet.
Yeahhhh :(
You have such great attitude, speaking voice, body language, facial expressions and overall enticing vibe to your content! Love it
Emma. You are amazing! I only saw one on your list so that's a high hit rate! Can't wait to be disturbed. Thank you thank you.
I've seen "The Treatment" and "Boxing Helena" and can't wait to check out the others. This is the best channel for recommendations!
Thank you! The treatment has scarred me
I had The Treatment on my list for awhile and after seeing your recent video I finally watched it tonight. Great dark thriller. Very impressed. Great recommendation! It's hard to find these types of dark neo-noir/detective/psychological thrillers in the vein of Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Antibodies, Girl with the D.T. etc. that aren't predictable or sloppy and poorly executed. And as you've mentioned, this one doesn't necessarily do anything totally special or revolutionary, but it's just very well done, balanced and tightly written. Thanks again Emma.
I watched it tonight too after this recommendation. It was quite disturbing, yet still a great movie. Good acting and it was a steady pace.
The amount of movies you’ve given me to watch in the past few days… you are a blessing
Love these lists, Emma! Thank you!
Thank you!
Love the list. I watched Boxing Helena. I quite liked it, but it’s really all over the place. Thanks again for all the good recommendations.
Boxing Helena was one of the first movies I sought out independently of my parents when I was younger. 10/10 no notes, I love every minute of it. Glad you found it Emma!
Suddenly my weekend is full 😂
Lines were made to be crossed.
Thanks as always Emma. 🙃
Love these videos 😍
Thanks again for the watch list! I've only seen Boxing Helena
Interstingly, I saw two of these: Miss Violence and 3096 Days. While the second one didn't really stay with me, Miss Violence is still one of the most gut-wrenching films I've ever seen. Right from to start you know that something is very wrong with this family. I was even more devestated once I discovered it is based on a true story. I'll check out the other ones, they sound intersting. Thanks as always Emma :).
Great list!!
Thank you so much for this list!! Just recently watched The Treatment and Miss Violence (super super hard to find this movie btw), great recommendations!
I watched Heaven Knows What twice and I couldn’t describe why… my partner was like “it’s so upsetting what are you doing why?” I was so impressed with the actress and the honesty even though I was horrified. If you’ve had manipulative loved ones it really captures that existence.
I loved Heaven Knows What. Another great non horror film on Shudder at the time.
Agree
...heaven knows what fucked me up bc I actually knew ilya and Arielle irl. Like, I first met ilya when I was 15, I'm 30 now. We were in the same circles almost nonstop
Bloody hell boxing Helena ! That’s a throw back.. completely forgot this creation exist. Thanks for the reminder and other mentions
Of these, I've only seen Boxing Helena. It was definitely a product of its time, and honestly I found both hilariously funny at times and incredibly grating at others. But certainly an original piece of work. Sad fact that Julian Sands, the lead in that film has been missing for over a month now since he disappeared hiking in California. I've really loved his work and as the days go by it seems unlikely he may be found.
I am Yorgos Lanthimos STAN, and saw MISS VIOLENCE three weeks ago, and LOVED IT! I’m definitely looking forward to checking out THE TREATMENT! ❤ your horror content so much! Excellent work!
I agree with your take on the Treatment. That movie and a specific scene stayed with me entirely too long and I QUICKLY texted a few friends to say “never watch this.”
What was in the water in 2014?? hahahah Great list, didn’t know a single one thanks emma!!!
I was thinking the same thing. 2014 was a big year for disturbing cinema! 😝
Haha I didn’t even realise till you pointed it out
Awesome recommendations!
I was literally just thinking about watching a spooky astronauts video and look what popped up off my feed! Now that spooky
thanks for making this list - now I have few new (to me) movies to watch. 🖤
Enjoy! And remember to hydrate and take breaks 🤣
@@spookyastronauts 😂does wine count as hydrating? 🤔
Great list! One little film that doesn't get mention often and that really got under my skin was Chuck & Buck from Mike White. It really went somewhere I wasn't comfortable with.
Love your videos
Thanks for recommending Miss Violence. Honestly gave me some of the strongest emotions I ever felt watching a movie. One that makes you say « awesome movie, I hated it » 😅
I’ll watch the Treatment sometime later
Is it bad that I find very little that disturbs me anymore? I wonder if I've just seen too much now. I find that these sorts of disturbing films, when they do cause a reaction in me, leave me depressed more than anything, which I'm not sure if that is the same as feeling disturbed? I watched 'Speak No Evil' the other week and the ending just left me with this horrible empty feeling that lingered for a few days. Maybe I need to change genre lol.
I was scrolling when I stumbled upon your channel, and as I'm a fan of disturbing movies I had to watch this, and I'm happy that I did.
Very good video and I shall be checking these movies out. Subscribed.
A movie that I highly recommend, if you haven't seen it already, is a 1983 Austrian movie called Angst.
After watching it for the first time it stayed with me for a long time after the credits rolled.
Brilliantly acted and directed.
With you all the way. Love your channel.
Hi Emma. 2 movies I immediately thought of as I watched this post. 2013 film out of the Netherlands, Borgman. And a film from the 90's starring Alan Rickman and Madelaine Stowe called Closetland. Both of these I would consider Psychological Horror and have stuck with me loooong after I saw them. Keep up the great work!!
Oh boy, traumatic movies are my favourite! /s
Thank you for this lol
Adding The Treatment and Miss Violence to the list. Thanks Emma!
Good luck !
I think you are the only person I have heard discuss Boxing Helena! I actually saw that when it was new and have never forgotten it. At the time, I thought it was one of the oddest movies I had ever seen. The only other one I had seen then that stuck with me was Warhol's Flesh For Frankenstein.
Holy crap. You are spot on with miss violence. Just finished it, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so disturbed by a movie since the war zone. And another movie I can’t quite think of, made in the 90s, that I recommend if you like disturbing, of course you may have seen it already. This one is sticky, I’m having a difficult time shaking it. Wow. So deeply disturbing but so we’ll made. The whole time watching it, it felt oppressive and imposing and toxic and questionable and claustrophobic…yikes. Thanks and no thanks for the recco. Lol-ish.
Great list, I've been intrigued by Boxing Helena for ages, seeing the cover at the video library when it came out as a kid and remembering all the terrible reviews it got at the time. Maybe I'll have to check it out. Have you ever reviewed Takashi Miike's Visitor Q? I think it's the most disturbing dark comedic take on Mary Poppins anyone could ever imagine.
Boxing Helena was a milestone for me in the 90s . First I love Julian Sands, and Sherilyn Fenn was really popular at the time. It's a movie that always stayed in my mind and forged , with some other movies, my cinematic tastes, aesthetic. The movie that disturbed me the most and troubled me for a long time, and still now is Grim Love. It's based on a real story and knowing that it is just shocking and terribly sad too. I never hear of this one, sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one that saw this. Keri Russell is very good in it. Did you see it Emma ? Thanks for another great video!
I saw it. I had to turn the channel several times but kept coming back to it. Self hate is a terrible thing.
@@careyatchison1348 I agree, to be so unhappy and miserable, life can be so hard.
Surprisingly, I’ve actually seen one of these, Boxing Helena. I worked at a video store about 20 years ago and would pick up random titles I’d never heard of before. I don’t remember much detail except that it was very strange.
Haha yep that’s the one
thanks so much!!
I love your disturbing movie recommendations! I watched Dogtooth after it was in one of your videos and it was awesome.
How about LITTLE SWEETHEART from like 1989?
Boxing Helena received so much more hate than I think it ever deserved, it is disturbing, but a fascinating film. So much is in this one that it has taken decades to understand the subtleties. Thank you for your reviews of all of these films!
Anything Yorgos Lanthimos makes me super disturbed 🫣 maybe you could do a video on him just like you did with Gaspar Noe 🙌
The number of these films that are based on/inspired by true stories is truly scary.
oh! I watched Boxing Helena so many years ago I forgot about it! Thanks for reminding me about it (kinda?) - now I remember how it gave me this claustrophobic, suffocating feeling... This one is disturbing, alright..
My sister has watched "Miss Violence", while it's been on my list for quite some time. We're both Greek, so it's always interesting to watch the work of "your people".
I’ve seen Boxing Helena a long time ago and I really liked it. But…the rest of your list, thank you for making my day Because I’m on it! Gonna watch some movies today 🎥 😳🍿
WOWWWW TREATMENT WAS INSANE. Thank you!! I needed a good recommendation.
I have only seen Boxing Helena. I thought it was so different that I remember everything about it. I didn't LOVE it, but it left its mark. I watched on VHS in 95 - 96 and never saw it again. I will add the other ones to my 493 films to watch list. Thanks Em.
Amazing list, and some new ones for me to watch with is exciting! 2 disturbing Rec’s I have for you even though you probably seen them is “the golden glove” and also “nothing bad can happen”!!
Excited to watch these... love that disturbing content. Have you watched Meat Grinder?
Thank you Emma for your continued suggestions of disturbing movies it's really appreciated.
I own all of these movies except for Boxing Helena which I saw in the cinema on it's release. I have a few suggestions for you...
Pig (by Adam Mason very rare and difficult to find)
The Vomit Gore films.
Black Metal Veins
Orozco the Embalmer (hard to find)
Cannibal (by Marian Dora)
Voyage to Agatis (Marian Dora)
Melencolie Der Engel (Marian Dora)
There is a Secret in My Soup
Thank you once again for your disturbing recommendations.
Thanks for the list, Emma! I saw Miss Violence in the cinema when it first came out and I was not prepared for the total darkness of the story. I was with a friend, and I hade to leave with her before the end because she found it too hard to watch. I still think it was a good film, but I probably wouldn't recommend it if you don't know the theme beforehand.
I went in completely blind… what a gut punch! I can only watch films like that alone
@@spookyastronauts Yes, a total gut punch! I should not have watched in the cinema. I´ve still haven't seen the full ending, though.
OMG !!!! Boxing Helena !!!! I saw this movie so long ago (when I was a teenager... I know!) and it really stuck with me for a long time. I've never seen it again since but I think I'll try to watch it again! (Thanks?!) for the memories! ahah
I saw Boxing Helena for the first time when I was 15 (41 now) and it was on HBO. I was not prepared but it did start my lifelong obsession with horror and disturbing movies.
Thank you for the video! I've actually watched and rewatched 3096 Days. Disturbing yes, but it's a great movie.
I've seen 3 of the 5. I always thought that Boxing Helena sowed one or two seeds for The Skin I'm In.
The skin I live in is amazing
@@spookyastronauts whoops, yes, great movie. Deeply creepy!
Thank you finally somebody talks about movies that I like dark disturbing movies that will really suck a person please keep doing more like this
I haven't thought of Boxing Helena in ages! I can't handle Julian Sands being misunderstood or quirky in any other movie without getting really uncomfy to this day.
I've been waiting for Boxing Helena to be mentioned around here! Saw it more than once back in the nineties. It has Art Garfunkel too!
i’m 52 years old and Boxing Helena was one of the first disturbing movies i’d watched. i’d have to say it was my intro to disturbing cinema. Yup…i watched that movie more times then i can count! Glad to see it get some props
Omg first time I've seen anyone mention Boxing Helena!
Nice list! I only have watched 3096 because it was on netflix. Gonna see the other ones for sure.
Boxing Helena reminded me of the Spanish movie La Piel que Habito, very disturbing. Don’t know if you ever talked about it, but if not, you should take a look! This list also reminded me of the Human Centipede (first sequence).
Happy Saturday ✨👼🏻💋💘🙏🏻👼🏿💜❤️🫶🏻🌈🌹🌹🌷🦋😎
One of the more disturbing films I’ve seen is the Finnish film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. It covers lots of taboo subjects. You feel sad and embarrassed for the main character, but then also you can sympathize with him in a weird dark corner of your mind.
Heaven Knows What is a masterpiece imo. You always mention movies that I think are underrated.
I just watched Miss Violence because of this list. I'm at a loss for words but am glad I watched it.
My God The Treatment is a hell of a movie. Now watched it. Thanks for the recommendation.
I remember when Boxing Helena came out and it still messes with my head. It reminded me of how I felt about BLUE Velvet (also a Lynch film) the tension makes one feel is so uncomfortable.
Thanks for the list, Emma. I saw "Boxing Helena" a long time ago on VHS rental, yet it is a film that sticks with you. It definitely had that Twin Peaks kind of vibe, but the jaw-dropper for me was seeing Sherilyn Fenn in that dress in the cabinet. It took a few seconds for my brain to comprehend what my eyes were seeing. I am curious now to see "The Treatment" and you have properly warned me.
As for disturbing recommendations, I've got three titles here (from least to most disturbing):
SHREIK OF THE MUTILATED (1974): This campy Bigfoot film was disturbing enough to give me a "panic attack" when I saw it eight years ago.
I'M NOT SCARED (IO NON HO PAURA, 2003): An Italian-Spanish film about a young boy discovering a disturbing secret in his small town.
DER SAMAURI (2014): A German crime thriller involving a strait-laced policeman tracking a cross-dressing serial killer with a samurai sword. It gets really weird.
So far i have not found a better channel for movies than your channel and i watch a lot of horror channels so thank you, do you ever consider doing retro horror movies separate from new or recent movies? i would love to hear your thoughts on Creature from the Black Lagoon and such since a new version will be coming out soon, you could call them Spooky-Retros, Thank you and bye.
There is this one movie I watched that just really got to me and I *rarely* seen it mentioned. In fact I watch your channel regularly (only subscribed now, because your videos come up so frequently in my youtube algorithm *almost* every time you make a video, I thought I had already subscribed) and I don't think you've mentioned the film, but it's called "The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael." I watched it once... I think it was posted on youtube a while back, but I don't think it streams. You might have to find a copy on ebay or amazon, but it's another rare traumatically-disturbing film.
I have bought a copy of "Boxing Helena" and it sits on my shelf. I just have big issues with a lot of body horror films, and from what I heard about the film, I just get this "Dead Ringers" vibe from it-- a movie I waited 25 years to watch, and when I finally did I was so traumatized I could watch another film or TV show with Jeremy Irons--and I have watched a lot of disturbing films (A Serbian Film, Salos, Funny Games--or in reality most Haneke films can be classified as such). "Dead Ringers" just really hit a nerve with me. BUT I am a HUGE Lynch fan --David and Jennifer--and I know that one day I will need to see this.
Thanks for the recommendations I'm off to watch the treatment.🎃🎃👍👍
The only one I have seen is Boxing Helena. I saw it when I was trying to find everything David Lynch did or had any connection to. It's definitely a strange one, but I liked it.
