I was a projectionist at a small independent cinema in the early 90s and showed Boxing Helena. Fun seeing people's faces as they exited the theater, wondering what the hell they just witnessed. Good times. 😁
Kudos for featuring "Boxing Helena." ! It seemed to be part of a string of disturbing "body horror" films of the early-mid '90's: " Killing Zoe," "The Doom Generation," "7", "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", and to a degree "The Crying Game." All had the same bleak, industrial lighting and disturbing imagery. Solid vid.
I never see anyone mention Mysterious Skin with JGL. It is extremely well done, and I don’t know if I could ever watch it again. A young boy is obsessed with alien abductions, believing he was a victim. Another boy struggles with drugs and begins hustling. When their paths cross, the tragic event that links them is reviled. I haven’t watched it since the days of Netflix by mail, but it still lives in my head.
Great film!! Omg - great cast, acting, film work. I miss the old IFC days. But this movie is NOT A HORROR MOVIE. there is an important distinction between gritty, human based, existential coming of age storytelling, and HORROR. Again - I LOVE this movie, but it's not horror. You need to learn the difference. Let me give u a quick walk-through: John Milton, Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. There's a very excellent commentary track that's on UA-cam (or was not very long ago). It was only on the fucking laser disc, so I hadn't heard it before. It's a fun listen.

Are used to love boxing Helena! Always had a special place in my heart for Julian Sands. I haven’t seen it mentioned in the comments anywhere or in your video about him being missing right now and that the outlook is not good… So sad.
Man Bites Dog was a pretty disturbing movie that doesn't get mentioned much. Its portrayal of the socio/psychopathic main character is chilling. Not exactly a horror movie but scary when you think about people who are this way in the and worse real world. And it was one of the earlier movies I can think of that popularized the "found footage" style of filmmaking.

I recommend Home Movie. It starts as a found footage movie where the father is recording different family holidays and gets dark fast. It's on shudder if you want to see a disturbing film.
I had The Treatment on my list for awhile and after seeing your recent video I finally watched it tonight. Great dark thriller. Very impressed. Great recommendation! It's hard to find these types of dark neo-noir/detective/psychological thrillers in the vein of Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Antibodies, Girl with the D.T. etc. that aren't predictable or sloppy and poorly executed. And as you've mentioned, this one doesn't necessarily do anything totally special or revolutionary, but it's just very well done, balanced and tightly written. Thanks again Emma.
Thanks for recommending Miss Violence. Honestly gave me some of the strongest emotions I ever felt watching a movie. One that makes you say « awesome movie, I hated it » 😅 I’ll watch the Treatment sometime later
I agree with your take on the Treatment. That movie and a specific scene stayed with me entirely too long and I QUICKLY texted a few friends to say “never watch this.”

Of these, I've only seen Boxing Helena. It was definitely a product of its time, and honestly I found both hilariously funny at times and incredibly grating at others. But certainly an original piece of work. Sad fact that Julian Sands, the lead in that film has been missing for over a month now since he disappeared hiking in California. I've really loved his work and as the days go by it seems unlikely he may be found.
Holy crap. You are spot on with miss violence. Just finished it, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so disturbed by a movie since the war zone. And another movie I can’t quite think of, made in the 90s, that I recommend if you like disturbing, of course you may have seen it already. This one is sticky, I’m having a difficult time shaking it. Wow. So deeply disturbing but so we’ll made. The whole time watching it, it felt oppressive and imposing and toxic and questionable and claustrophobic…yikes. Thanks and no thanks for the recco. Ema thanks for this lists. They are rare yet necessary.. there are times and people that do need this lists. It’s so easy at times to go through life as a zombie pretending to not see any of the wrong around us and it’s a waste of a life, it is helpful at times to be disturbed in order to find our own solutions and in the best case consciously help ourselves and those around us to become better people. Right from to start you know that something is very wrong with this family. I was even more devestated once I discovered it is based on a true story. Is it bad that I find very little that disturbs me anymore? I wonder if I've just seen too much now. I find that these sorts of disturbing films, when they do cause a reaction in me, leave me depressed more than anything, which I'm not sure if that is the same as feeling disturbed? I watched 'Speak No Evil' the other week and the ending just left me with this horrible empty feeling that lingered for a few days. Maybe I need to change genre lol.

I think you are the only person I have heard discuss Boxing Helena! I actually saw that when it was new and have never forgotten it. At the time, I thought it was one of the oddest movies I had ever seen. The only other one I had seen then that stuck with me was Warhol's Flesh For Frankenstein.
Boxing Helena was a milestone for me in the 90s . First I love Julian Sands, and Sherilyn Fenn was really popular at the time. It's a movie that always stayed in my mind and forged , with some other movies, my cinematic tastes, aesthetic. The movie that disturbed me the most and troubled me for a long time, and still now is Grim Love. It's based on a real story and knowing that it is just shocking and terribly sad too. I never hear of this one, sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one that saw this. Keri Russell is very good in it. Did you see it Emma ? Thanks for another great video!
I have seen Boxing Helena, and even though it was a long time ago, I remember a lot of details really well. "I'm going to the club!" Paxton was always the best at playing assholes. So you're right, it's pretty memorable!
Boxing Helena received so much more hate than I think it ever deserved, it is disturbing, but a fascinating film. So much is in this one that it has taken decades to understand the subtleties. Thank you for your reviews of all of these films!
I have only seen Boxing Helena. I thought it was so different that I remember everything about it. I didn't LOVE it, but it left its mark. I watched on VHS in 95 - 96 and never saw it again. I will add the other ones to my 493 films to watch list. Thanks Em.
I was scrolling when I stumbled upon your channel, and as I'm a fan of disturbing movies I had to watch this, and I'm happy that I did. Very good video and I shall be checking these movies out. Subscribed. A movie that I highly recommend, if you haven't seen it already, is a 1983 Austrian movie called Angst. After watching it for the first time it stayed with me for a long time after the credits rolled. Brilliantly acted and directed.
One of the more disturbing films I’ve seen is the Finnish film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. It covers lots of taboo subjects. You feel sad and embarrassed for the main character, but then also you can sympathize with him in a weird dark corner of your mind.
You're the only person I've ever heard talk about boxing Helena. I only watched it because I had a high school crush on Julian sands from the warlock movies. Watching it was quite a time.
I remember when Boxing Helena came out and it still messes with my head. It reminded me of how I felt about BLUE Velvet (also a Lynch film) the tension makes one feel is so uncomfortable.
Maybe I’m late here, but the Safdie Brothers first film is actually called “Heaven Knows What”, I saw it’s debut at SXSW many years ago and it is definitely amazing and worth seeing.
1970 Scream and scream again, is kind of all over the place. But there's a jogger who collapses and he wakes up in bedroom, no one talks to him or explains anything, next scene he wakes up, and his leg is missing, still no one talks w/ him, he wakes up and another leg is missing, bit by bit limbs go missing. It was the no explanation, no one speaking to him that was just intense.
The only one I have seen is Boxing Helena. I saw it when I was trying to find everything David Lynch did or had any connection to. It's definitely a strange one, but I liked it.

My love of Boxing Helena was the thing that alerted my friends to my truly bizarre taste in cinema ❤️ they truly thought I was off my rocker 😂
Jennifer Lynch's "Chained" makes Boxing Helena look like a sitcom.
Chained is brilliant but I’ve spoken about it many times
Thank you finally somebody talks about movies that I like dark disturbing movies that will really suck a person please keep doing more like this
Happy Saturday ✨👼🏻💋💘🙏🏻👼🏿💜❤️🫶🏻🌈🌹🌹🌷🦋😎
I think you are the only person I have heard discuss Boxing Helena! I actually saw that when it was new and have never forgotten it. At the time, I thought it was one of the oddest movies I had ever seen. The only other one I had seen then that stuck with me was Warhol's Flesh For Frankenstein.
thanks for making this list - now I have few new (to me) movies to watch. 🖤
Enjoy! And remember to hydrate and take breaks 🤣
@@spookyastronauts 😂does wine count as hydrating? 🤔
I saw it. I had to turn the channel several times but kept coming back to it. Self hate is a terrible thing.
@@careyatchison1348 I agree, to be so unhappy and miserable, life can be so hard.
I have seen Boxing Helena, and even though it was a long time ago, I remember a lot of details really well. "I'm going to the club!" Paxton was always the best at playing assholes. So you're right, it's pretty memorable!
Thank you for putting Boxing Helena. Its my favorite movie. Rip Julian Sands. Im happy they didn't have Madonna as Helena.
man bites dog the most disturbing film ive ever seen on a psychological and violence level
If you want to see a really traumatic movie, i suggest you to see Silvano Agosti's "In the highest of the skies" (1977).
I've been waiting for Boxing Helena to be mentioned around here! Saw it more than once back in the nineties. It has Art Garfunkel too!
I was literally just thinking about watching a spooky astronauts video and look what popped up off my feed! Now that spooky
One of the more disturbing films I’ve seen is the Finnish film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. It covers lots of taboo subjects. You feel sad and embarrassed for the main character, but then also you can sympathize with him in a weird dark corner of your mind.
Everytime I watch your disturbing film lists I am like oh I am sure I will know most of these, and then I know none 😂
Haha I watch Sooooo many films to find these ones. I dig and dig and dig!
You're the only person I've ever heard talk about boxing Helena. I only watched it because I had a high school crush on Julian sands from the warlock movies. Watching it was quite a time.
Love the list. I watched Boxing Helena. I quite liked it, but it’s really all over the place. Thanks again for all the good recommendations.
Oh boy, traumatic movies are my favourite! /s
Thank you for this lol
Stoker (2013) is one of my favorite films, but it's one I don't often recommend because it gets disturbing.
I've seen 3 of the 5. I always thought that Boxing Helena sowed one or two seeds for The Skin I'm In.
The skin I live in is amazing
@@spookyastronauts whoops, yes, great movie. Deeply creepy!
Adding The Treatment and Miss Violence to the list. Thanks Emma!
Good luck !
You FINALLY mentioned The Treatment! Great film! I told you to watch it multiple times way back when I first discovered your content.
I remember when Boxing Helena came out and it still messes with my head. It reminded me of how I felt about BLUE Velvet (also a Lynch film) the tension makes one feel is so uncomfortable.
Heaven Knows What looks interesting. I recently found out there is a color version available of Human Centipede 2.
Maybe I’m late here, but the Safdie Brothers first film is actually called “Heaven Knows What”, I saw it’s debut at SXSW many years ago and it is definitely amazing and worth seeing.
My God The Treatment is a hell of a movie. Now watched it. Thanks for the recommendation.
Boxing Helena was something. It definitely stuck with me. So disturbing.
