Good Job well done. Might suggest filling the post hole concrete approx 2 in. above grade (using sono-tube collars for trim). Purpose of this is to allow water runoff and prevent pooling and rot of the uprights over time.

Hi Karrina, If you wanted to put posts in your planter boxes to hold a pergola you would need a lot of concrete in the bottom of them, at least 450mm deep, so that would make your planters very high. You would also need to have drain holes through the concrete to allow water to escape, so all in all you could but it would look a little strange. It would be best to concrete posts into the ground the build your planters around the posts. Hope that helps. SR

Concrete can absorb watter, so wood in it can be destroyed in time (rain, snow,..). There is better solution, concrete's foot can go 10 cm over ground level, and wood pillows can be supported by concrete in that way. Watter can not harm wood, and all can be much effective.
+Rs S In fact I could show few pics of what I have done in front of my house. I am an enginner and I am looking for solution under 500 BAM (270 USD), and I make it.
AutoMotoSvijet Great, coming summer I am clear in my mind, I will buy all the tools, wood ,make a plan and will build my nice backyard. I think I can finish the work in 1/4 the cost.
I'm thinking of building one like this so that i can put solar panels on it rather than my shed/radio shack. The problem is where i want to put it, i cant dig down because of the easement. It would somehow need to be moveable. Would I be able to use those raised concrete bases and level them out?
Hi! Is it alright to allow wood to be in contact with concrete? Isn't it necessary to isolate it somehow to prevent moist from going into wood? Thanks!
I always thought it was standard practice to put few inches of gravel before the concrete, for drainage. Either that or bolt them to metal brackets set in the concrete. Won't these posts rot over time (quicker I mean).
As he shows, they are sitting off the ground on a couple of bricks or blocks, then concrete floods under and around them. Plus they are H5 treated posts meaning they can sit in water logged areas, unlike H4 and on. H4 & 5 are good for well over 25 years against rot and decay.
Can you tell us what sizes of timber is used also what length and diameter are the bolts so when you go to mitre 10 to uplift you order you know what you're go is what you need .Thanks

I've got a build to do like this, but it's not on grass. It's on tarmark. We're using metal fence post holders, what would be the best way to make sure they do not break free of thier holdings in strong wind? (They will be bolted in place.)
