- Looking for the best head unit on the market? In my option, the Alpine Halo 9 ILXF 309 is exactly that. This 9” touch screen head unit has been in my truck for over a year, so I figured I’d do an honest review of how I like it. So far I’ve had zero issues and love the performance and features in my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. Having Apple Car Play, bluetooth, maps and more in a truck from 2006 is awesome!

I too have had mine now for nearly18 months and never had an issue - it just works. Overall floating tablet design is fantastic and best on market at the time and still is today IMO. The dispay mounting and setup is extremely well thought out and engineered. Also bought it's cheaper sibling 6 months ago which is great too and I don't miss the removed features. With that being said the new Kenwood 10.1 seems to have blown this out of the water when looking at some of the Alpine 'features' that now seem very dated. Namely poor screen resolution, contrast, glare and lack of HD camera input options. The new Kenwood also has a physical volume knob and buttons which I crave for over the touch sensitive buttons. My new project car was going to naturally get another Halo unit but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for your great review. I consider a new head unit for our LandRover Defender and because our main car has Apple Car play it, a unit like this would be great. But I live in europe and units get stolen her from cars. Does this Alpine has something to make it useless when it got stolen from the car?

I've always preferred Alpine head units and recommend and install them for my clients I may just have to upgrade to this screen based unit. My only reservation would be what to do in the city while parked, kinda hard to carry this in your purse or pocket.........
I love this.. Looking at putting it in my 2014 XC90... any pointers.. I already know I need to get a $300 harness in addition to the $999 unit cost..

What dash kit are you using? I have a new halo 11 mounted to a metra din kit on my 3rd Gen and it is NOT sturdy at all. I can literally pull the unit out as it’s only held by plastic tabs that are not strong enough to hold the weight of the screen
Hopefully soon I get the 11” screen for my ram

What was the backup camera you used?
Excellent! This unit is definitely on my list of “must have” upgrades. I have the same year and features (except sun roof, I’m jealous!) but with a canopy on the back. That sub looks so clean and tucked away nicely. Does it really fill the cabin with bass? Even with the windows down?
Honestly for how small it is, the sound is pretty impressive. It doesn’t have the extreme low range or power that a big 12” sub would, but it’s more than enough for what I want and I get to keep my back seat storage space!

Wanna sell me your truck? Just kidding, but sounds like a killer ride! I used a license plate mount since I frequently have mountain bikes on a tailgate pad. If you want an OEM look, you can use the OEM RAM tailgate handle camera too.

How hard / easy is this unit for someone to steal? I spoke to Alpine and note it is non-detachable - so always on show.
I really wish that you had included how the sound quality is when you’re making calls using the Bluetooth.

All works with an additional harness just like most head units!

Fast enough that I’ve never really though about it! Just turn on the truck and it’s ready to go.
Did you have the factory 7 speaker system before you upgraded your audio? If so what did you do with the factory amp?
No, but if you do it’s a bit of a different process since the factory amp only sends bass to the front door speakers if I remember right. If you go through crutchfield they give you all the parts and instructions to make it work though. I HIGHLY recommend them.
I've had this head unit before. My only real issue was that the volume wasn't a knob, but rather buttons.
Yeah if you have steering wheel controls it’s fine but if you don’t it’s a little hard to change volume over bumps haha.
Between a 96 V10, 00 Dakota, 07 6.7, and 09 6.7, I think I’d rather have buttons than Dodge’s volume knobs.
Can it play videos wile drive?
I have the exact same unit. Wanted to ask you something tho. Do you also experience apps like maps or waze are hard to see the smaller roads on when they are in day mode? I run mine in nightmodus because it's just not do-able on daymode.. Can't seem to find any contrast settings or something like that on the unit.
I actually use satellite a lot when I need to really see detail. Works like a charm!

How did you work around the edge and CH2 installation harness (maestro) both plugging ODBII ? did you hard wire the harness? Or did you even use the harness, it is sold by Crutchfield. thanks Joel
I don’t have the CH2 harness on mine so it wasn’t an issue!

Crutchfield will provide all the harnesses and bezel adapters you need!
Thinking about putting a halo9 in my 3rg gen. Could it be flush mounted to the dash with some custom mounts? Concerned about depth
That depends on how custom you want to get, and how much time you want to invest in it.
Alpine does have flush mounted 2 DIN receivers, you'll still need to modify the radio bezel piece, but 2din conversions and trim pieces are readily available for that.
Will this fit my 09 ram?
How’s the brightness at night time? With a screen that large I would imagine it could be blinding at night, does it have a dim mode?
It does dim and the apple car play goes to dark mode at night with a black background.
The HDMI will display 1080p.. However, it will not be viewed as 1080p to devices that ask for display resolution. Example. Nbidia Shield TV is told something less and it makes all kinds of weird stuff..
I’ve heard floating head unit tends to have rattle noise in long term use. Do you have that problem with this alpine?
I did have to use some painters tape to stop a squeak where there was plastic on plastic where the screen mounts to the base. It was a simple fix though!
Did this come with everything you need to hook it up ie adapter cables? I have a 2005 ram 2500, looks like the camera comes separate.

Another reviewer complained about the display on this unit being too bright and with no way to adjust the brightness. Are you having issues with the brightness as well?
It doesn’t really bother me honestly. I guess it all depends on your personal preference!
How's the screen glare and hands free call quality? I'm researching this unit and trying to find the best handsfree mic to replace the Pioneer AV3500-NEX that was such a disappointment.
Glare is pretty minimal. Call quality is about on par with the mics included in most high end head units. My truck is pretty loud and people can still hear me just fine.

Glare isn’t bad at all and brightness is perfect. The resolution isn’t the best ever, but it’s not like I’m watching movies on it so it’s totally fine for me!

How's the picture quality? I noticed quite a few negative reviews on Crutchfield regarding its poor picture quality.
It’s not bad at all. Sure it isn’t 4k, but I have no complaints.

Nope! Just a harness from crutchfield. It’s different for every vehicle application though.
Would like to put a nice stereo like this in my semi truck.... can Google maps or Pandora be put on this stereo and used?

Honestly no. They’ve updated this head unit, and I have the new version in my VW and love it
Dude you should get that new Kenwood 10-inch is better and they also have a 10 inch pioneer not bad also

Not really. You can move it up and down on the mounting point during install though.

Would the newer 11in model fit without blocking your A/C vents you think?
A 10in screen is pushing it’ll barely cover the ac vents. I believe an 11in will over lap it a bit.

Not this model, although you can always use a wireless carplay dongle in the usb port.

You missed the elephant in the room, that big screen is only 480p, they couldn't have been cheaper than this, this isn't 2004, I expect at least 1080p and today 4K!
