Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
Our goal with this channel is to improve society’s perception of disability. Presently, many people out there assume Hannah must’ve been attracted to my wealth. The underlying meaning of that assumption is that Hannah OBVIOUSLY couldn’t have been attracted to my personality or my looks (because I’m disabled and therefor unworthy of her). This idea is extremely damaging to disabled people, so we made this video to help people realize that money had nothing to do with our getting together. If it makes just a few people question their own biases and assumptions, then making this video was worth it!
I think what people don’t understand Shane is that there is no other person on earth that is worthy of you or that is worthy of Hannah. Therefore by default U2 must be with each other. Lol I love you guys so much and please just take what people say with a grain of salt when it’s negative. I hope someday to run into you guys somewhere be at Disney World or a speaking engagement somewhere. U2 have been such an inspiration and I love your channel and keeping up with your lives. Thank you so much for living it out in front of me.

It took me all of 10 seconds to reflect and realize it was my own perception of relationships that was the issue, not the relationship itself. I can only hope others go through the same realization, thank you for being so open and honest with your following! It has opened many eyes including my own.

Liz (the one who posed this, that is not really Hannah's mom), it really is amazing what we can see and realize when we take time to reflect inwards and examine why we're thinking or feeling, and then challenge it. I know it's difficult, but that's where I personally have had so much growth. I want to thank you for sharing your truth and being vulnerable. It is a testament to what we can discover as well as the kindness that exists even among a sea of trolls.

@@dannyguy2008 I do. I have a good friend with aspergers. He was married once for a brief time. She turned out to be a nightmare! My youngest nephew did have a girlfriend, but, after her wanting to date others for awhile, they broke up, got back together after a few years, and broke up again for the same reason. She now wants him back again, but, he won't go back. He remains friends with her, but doesn't want to go through the same thing again.

There was a video a while back where Hannah explained her insecurities because of looking like an adult since she was 13. I felt like that she has learned early on to weed out those who weren’t authentic or real about who they are and what they want. Shane is as real and authentic as it gets. I feel like their personalities just click. I’m so grateful they share these little windows into their lives because it inspires empathy, courage and authenticity for people who watch these videos. Those who go straight to the jealously button are lazy with their own insecurities and maybe after ten odd years of dealing with it they’ll be in a better place and can feel at the least embarrassment at their poor choices…ie:trolling.

If young men could set aside the physical aspects of this relationship which is the most important to males and take a closer look, there is something very valuable to be learned here. For females, the emotional side of a relationship is far and away more important that the physical side. A woman will not fall in love with a man regardless of his looks, money or status unless he provides the emotional connection that she needs. A female has no control over her feelings when these emotional needs are met. This couple is living proof of what I'm saying here. For Hannah, he ticks all her boxes and she had no control of falling in love with him. Really, it's just that simple. No put on or scam or other motives. They love each other. While there obviously are some shallow people out there, you can't deny that sense of humour is insanely attractive - especially having the ability to laugh at yourself. Just having that will get you far in dating. Of course you still have to properly groom yourself, and have a good personal hygiene, but looks don't matter as much as people think.
Jealousy.
The two of you are so refreshing, not just in your love for each other but also in the way you answer these rude commenters with grace. Hannah, you found a gem of a man who brings you much joy and happiness and you don’t care what others think about you. Shane you found a gem of a woman who loves you for who you are, even though you have challenges that most people don’t have, and who isn’t concerned about the superficial things that much of the world is. I pray that God will bless both of you.

When l watch your videos l don't even think about disabilities.
What shines or stands out for me is Shane's happiness and wit and great sense of humour. Also Hannah's perspective on life issues and your dog and restaurants and the food you guys eat. And especially how happy you guys are. Lastly l enjoy seeing America, l hope to visit one day.
You guys are the most inspiring “fake” couple I’ve ever seen. Everyone hopes that one day they find someone who looks at them the way you guys look at each other. I don’t see Shane’s disability, I see the love you share. Thank you for sharing your stories with us. You are awesome!
I can't speak for Shane here, but I *want* people to see my disability. It's important for me to be viewed holistically, because disability is often swept under the rug. The world is so hugely inaccessible, and disability is something that isnt talked about by the abled community. It isn't funded by our governments, and it is viewed by many people as a "curse" and not a unique viewpoint we can bring to the world. View the person ofcourse, but view our disability as a part of who we are as that person.
I can see why Hannah fell in love with Shane. He is such a beautiful person. Wonderful sense of humour.

My 21 year old daughter is in a wheelchair from a back injury. She can walk only about ten feet at a time with a walker. She can not feel her legs from hips down. She also has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. We live in a small town in PA. Most of the stores on Main Street are inaccessible to her. They have step ups. Our world is not accessible to people with disabilities. I never realized until her injury just how inaccessible the world is.
According to Wiki, he is worth 1 million as of today. He has come a long way and should be proud. Nobody should question his relationship because they are great people and love each other.
This just proves how shallow so much of this society is. Thank you both (and the many many of your followers) who are normal decent human beings.

And the big question would be why (other than they love each other). As far as her getting help, I really hope she does. Taking care of yourself can be difficult enough.

We like to make dark humoured jokes about the differences in medical bills - mainly that I don’t get a bill when seeing a doctor or needing some medical equipment! I am in awe of Hannah and her family. They raised her to know what true love really is and what it means to value a person for who they are and not what they can do for her.

It’s so frustrating that people can’t wrap their heads around disabled folks being in relationships/worthy of love etc. I was in an inter-able relationship for 8 years and folks did the whole “why are you REALLY with him?” Etc constantly. It’s so frustrating that people don’t see folks with disabilities as PEOPLE.
Some disabilities are worse than others. I’m on the autism spectrum (Asperger’s) and statistics show that autistic people struggle more in society than dyslexics, people who stutter and paraplegics. I’m 28 and never had a girlfriend because of my personality related to Asperger’s (can’t flirt, shy, say wrong things). So there’s a distinction.
Its actually deeper then that. They don't think they are good enough either unless they have money. That part freaks me out more. Its such a pathetic mindset.

I can’t understand why some people end up in a long term relationship with an abusive, negative, unkind, inconsiderate or unfaithful partners. People who are unable to commit to a relationship, people who use their partners for financial reasons, clingy etc. How about addictions. Some people have MULTIPLE ADDICTIONS. Is it really that hard to understand this relationship? There are many kinds of disabilities and only some of them are visible.

I love my wife because we share goals and dreams, and talking to her makes me happy when I have a bad day. Some people just don't get that a relationship is a partnership and that goes way beyond whether a person is disabled or not. I would never change my wife for anyone else. Money can't buy love you guys keep loving each other.

How sad is it that ppl can’t see it in their hearts to know or understand this very special kind of love and what an insult to Hannah that ppl can’t see how huge and sincere her heart and love for Shane is . I don't watch your videos often, but anyone that has, can see the love that y'all share for each other. My boyfriend and I have been dating for 10 months, he has seizures. He didn't tell me until our 4 date. He was afraid that I wouldn't want to be with him because of that. I told him that it was fine, my oldest son is autistic and has seizures. When you love someone, it doesn't matter. Best of wishes to you both

You two have done so much to help educate and change perception. I know that I really feel my own understanding was open, but limited before I got to be exposed to your lives through this channel. Now I see things differently each time I meet someone and it helps me to do better… I hope! I meet a lot of different people where I work and watching your channel has helped me be better at my job and to find more ways to accommodate different needs and to receive guests with an open receptivity to each one’s different circumstances. And I can honestly confess that before watching your channel I might not have considered that a woman who was with a man in a wheelchair was his spouse. But after watching your channel that’s always now my first assumption. And that’s huge! It has given me some precious experiences with people who come and feel accepted and understood. And I give you both the credit for my own personal transformation in thinking. (Funny enough, a close family friend is quadriplegic and married, but I guess because I knew his circumstances, it didn’t have the same transformative effect on my thinking as your channel did.) Thank you for all you do! And the risks you take in doing so. It is such a benefit to us all. 💕💕

I have followed you two long enough to get a pretty good idea of your personalities. you two found each other and complimented each other (actually better than a lot of people). you came to know each other in an honest way. I just like the two of you because you are intelligent and FUNNY. I truly wish you didn't feel that the trolls influence who you are and how your on line friends view your relationship.

Everyone brings something unique to a relationship....the least of which is how someone looks. If someone is only attracted to someone because of how they look, that relationship will not last. It is obvious that Shane and Hannah have a deep and meaningful relationship. Why can't people just accept that? I celebrate the love that they share and their willingness to share their lives despite the backlash. Shane and Hannah, continue to live your lives in way in which you honor each other!

It is really hard for people to understand but they fail to comprehend that you have both picked a partner who is kind loving and respectful to each other it is not ideal in most people's eyes but I think it's wonderful the love you both have found with each other
