      They look a lot better, but there are so many bronze ones. Possibly unintentional hybrids? Seems inefficient to feed fish one can't see year in and year out.

      I kinda like the bronzey looking ones honestly. Especially when you can see a bit of the orange or yellow on their heads peeking through the scales. I mean to each their own of course but I've always liked bronze goldfish too.

      @@colmcille9669 I'm not a fish expert by any means lol, but based on what I know of other fish (bettas mostly) their color can be effected by diet, health, exposure to light... If the koi in this pond have been living in murky water eating only algae and whatever bugs fell in the water (and maybe things like frog eggs or each other?) they probably weren't getting the kind of nutrients or environmental requirements for having better color. Now that the water is cleaner and (I assume) someone is feeding them, they're getting a chance to brighten up!

    Kind of winced seeing that black splotchy coloration on the carp. Those are ammonia burns. Not necessarily deadly but a sign their water was so high in ammonia for so long it literally burned them like acid. Goldfish and carp are very high ammonia bearing fish and every time one died it made the pond a little more toxic. Poor babies. Glad someone is taking care of them now. I do believe a bit of slime coat repair or melafix will help. It takes months for those burns to heal and get their color back.

    • @Mountain_Aquatics
      @Mountain_Aquatics  7 місяців тому +55

      Yes we added some Melafix. We always have some large tubs in the van.
      Some people commented stating that they would not have completely drained the pond however after seeing the dangerous nitrate levels in the water we knew we had to act fast. We did our best not to shock the fish and clearly did it right as we lost none even with the sudden change in parameters. We did what we could. What the video doesn’t show (we didn’t think UA-cam would allow it) was that we found 2 dead fish during the drain. They were both very sore looking and had clearly been suffering for some time. Thank you for the comment, I hope you enjoyed the video

    Yay for the plants! I would do much more plants or add water hyacinth and lettuce until the lilies are large enough to balance the pond. I would repot the lilies to larger baskets right away and add large rocks on the surface of the baskets to keep the fish from digging them out. I hope to see more updates on this beautiful pond. 😍

    After years of battling green water and algae, I found installing plants and a lot of them solved the problem. Watercress! Keep it contained as the root system gets large and cull it periodically. Koi and goldfish are especially messy. Koi also eat everything thus keeping plants in pots or floating planters helps.

    • @Mountain_Aquatics
      @Mountain_Aquatics  Рік тому +5

      @@Mountain_Aquatics I have a similar sized pond and a Heron who is a frequent caller, he takes a goldfish when he can and I don’t begrudge him them one bit. He leaves the bigger koi alone , I think it keeps the pond healthier.
