I Live in Michigan so you like very similar climate! And I would love to have a water feature in my back yard, but, it's a permission thing yes. I know the plants! And I would have frogs and a turtle.... :-) .... and some Michigan "Picture Plants", too, to eat up mosquitoes we have more than the turtle can eat hahahah.

Shame on you for putting unacclimated fish in an uncycled ass pond.
For sure we recommend 2 weeks before releasing fish into a new pond. That being said I can report the fish are thriving.
