  • The marketplace has become a wasteland of disposable products that are bought and replaced constantly. Sometime, the soothing ointment for your stressed out soul is to hang on to the old "tried and true" items like vacuums, cars and tools. Because, as they say, they don't make them like they used to.
When it comes to vacuums released or designed in 1982, nearly 40 years ago, what are you gaining and what are you giving up by using one of these? Are new vacuums even comparable? In this video, we take a quick look at vintage Electrolux vs modern Sebo vacuums.

Kinda reminds me of why so many of us still buy new and old Toyora 4Runners when they're:
    -inefficient
    -gas guzzlers
    -expensive
    -heavy and don't handle well
-every other modern SUV is better in every way possible
It's because they work and we stick to it. I'm certain this is why some owners don't care to part ways with their old vacuums (me being one of them..and I'm 27 lmao!)

Very well said and put together. I absolutely love my Electroluxes from the 50’s-60’s. At the time I believe they were the only few machines that had a 4 ply bag with a gasket seal. I used vintage machines for daily cleaning, but also run an air purifier along with them to cut down on the allergens. However, ever since I bought a Sebo E3 Premium and a Riccar R30D last month, they’ve been my go to machines for everything and I’ve noticed a big decrease in dust on furniture. Being out in the desert attracts more dust/dirt than a standard suburb environment.
I’ve also noticed I didn’t have to take my allergy medication as much. Wish I had switched ages ago. The Electroluxes and my other vintage machines will just remain in my collection and will no longer be “daily drivers”. I’m especially impressed with the support, repair, and ease of maintenance of Sebo’s line up. I definitely plan on recommending anything in their line up to other people looking for a new machine.

Hi Matt; Old vacuums are sort of like old cars. People see newer models come on the market but because of sentimental value, they just hate to part with the old and welcome in the new. I still have a Hoover Constellation which I love but is not my main vacuum. The Hoover was new in the 60s and I remember when my mom and I bought it. I love the design even though the suction is not nearly as good as my Riccar, but when I have a dusting job and do not want to get out the Riccar I use the Hoover. The exhaust on the Hoover went directly into the carpet and except for the secondary filter under the bag any dirt in the exhaust goes back into the carpet.
Great video as always and you do make some great points and your argument is sound for ditching the old and replacing with the new. People should be more aware of air quality in the home. For this very reason your videos are a sound educational source. I have learned a lot from watching and listening to you and your videos are very well produced. You are by far the very best educator, when it comes to vacuum videos on UA-cam. Thanks for another great video. I appreciate the time and effort you put into producing them.

Thanks, John! There is a time a place for vintage vacuums. I would totally use one in the garage or use one occasionally for the fun of it. But, like daily driving a '55 Chevy with your kids in the car... there might be better options for daily use in this day and age. Appreciate the comment.

The polypropylene bags definitely make a difference. They will still allow some allergen bypass when full which is why like having a final filter. Of course, if you don't have allergies it may be less of a concern.

So true, all of that "particles" came from the homes environment so what are we supposed to do in between vacuum jobs? The air in a home is what it is, there's no continuous method to filter it all of the time. Besides, much of that stuff comes from outdoors/outside air...

Slight correction: the Lux Classic tank design was introduced in Canada in 1982 as the E-Special (the automatic counterpart was the E-2000, which would be the current Lux Legacy).

@@HouseOfVacuums @House Of Vacuums Thank you, and cheers to you! I might add that it was 1985 that the Canadian and American Electrolux affiliates merged, and the US at that time began importing the Canadian parts to assemble them and sell them. The model names & numbers then became Hi-Tech 2100 and Limited Edition (L-E) 2100. The Canadian plastic commercial canister model CB2000 had been introduced in both countries in 1983 along with the American-designed Floor Beautifier model B-9 (now called the Lux Floor Pro S165F). The entire line's color scheme was also switched in 1985 to light sand gray & jade to match the American metal cleaner line that had been launched in 1984. Incidentally, the main Canadian plant in Pointe Claire, QC was shuttered in 1987, and the Brockville, ON low volume plant in 1990.

I feel like air watts is kinda missing the point or not really relevant. The pressure you deliver via the motor, minus the friction that you impose, determine CFM. Since nearly all vacs are using around 32 or 35 or some other wack size (some Hoover and Shark), CFM per that device should be a good measurement, because the more water lift you have, the more air flow that results, for a given hose size.
Sure, my particular furnace/ac delivers around 1135CFM, but it has to do it at .7 inch water column, since typical central hvac is low static (and ideally you want around .5). Of course the ductwork is much larger, and not a 35mm outlet.
Course it is hard to measure actual water lift in practice since you seal up the vac doing so, which shows you get your water lift with 0 CFM.
For reference, I tested a Miele C1 using a Testo Anemometer probe, which calculates air flow by entering the hose outlet size. I got around 106CFM on the lowest setting, to around 157CFM on the highest.

Stopped by Dunagan's Vacuum Sewing Center in Aiken SC yesterday to check out a new vacuum cleaner because I felt my Electrolux Silverado was spewing dust. The Silverado sucks great, never let me down, but it's old technology. Saw the Sebo K2 and will purchase one next week when they restock. Variable speed, quiet, all I need, and three filters. Great video comparison, old is old and new is technically better.

The memories of being a child and chasing the carpet monster and it's light in the dark lol and seeing the sparkles in the sunlight afterwards on super sunny days, which later in life I realized wasn't magic but dust and that's why I would repeatedly 🤧 or have allergy flare-ups in spring and fall Lol 🤣

It sure is true, todays appliances have their advantages over the older ones and they aren't inexpensive today in any case. However, what people desire most is longevity, dependability and affordability. Of course, if there is a need for service, they also want parts availability. This is why many folks who have been used to quality products of the past hate the new ones so much. They are not supported as well, they are expensive but not truly made to tough standards and their features tend to breakdown often requiring parts that require long wait periods. For example, on the Sebo and Miele canisters, they have the sliding speed control on the handle of the vac hose...my experience tells me that will not last long and/or it will have dead spots in it between high and low at some point. Also, all is plastic...as it ages, it gets brittle and less able to deal with movement/servicing, self-tapping screws etc. Then, of course comes the fancy filter/bags that are proprietary...cost of those is fairly high.
I am impressed that someone finally put a vacuum gauge and CFM monitor on them to test the performance. Not everyone needs the benefits of the accessories, attachments etc. and simply wants a machine that moves air to make the job go quick and clean.

They don't make them like they use to eh? You got that right.. Today the vacuums cleaners made t are down right "SCRAP." Wal Mart vacuums are SCRAP. However the Kirby, and Miele vacuum cleaners and few others seem to be of good quality.. By the way I have got two Electrolux vacuums.. I think it's also important to mention that suction isn't the end all determination factor in how well a machine cleans. Agitation is the main factor drawing dirt out of the carpet and being wisked away by the airflow. If the machine does not agitate well it will not work properly. Adding this to what you said about filtration a vacuum can pick up well but if your machine doesn't trap the dirt well it isn't an effective cleaner just look at the old Sanitaire or Royal vacuums if you need an example of this...

    • @HouseOfVacuums
      @HouseOfVacuums  3 роки тому +1

Yes indeed, agitation is critical. This is obviously an incomplete comparison for at the floor cleaning, but a starting point for why designs of quality machines have improved over time.
I've got an old video on the channel about agitation... it's probably time to revisit it now that I've improved the channel production.

Aerus does have Style C HEPA bags for the Silverado and Lux Classic, so fine dust emissions would be a lot better compared to the standard paper bags.

    • @jhomrich89
      @jhomrich89 3 роки тому +1

This does help but again it's not the only determining factor in trapping dirt. Even then take a look at the competition from Miele and Sebo they are quieter, lighter, more powerful, more ergonomic, have 360 casters and just overall better designed machines. Given the choice between an electrolux old or new and a modern machine I'll stick with the modern machine.

    • @HouseOfVacuums

I wish they did, Aerus does not sell HEPA bags for the C,R, and U styles they only make HEPA bags for the Platinum. They’re only available aftermarket, DVC has them, Evacuumstore has their own branded ones and Vacuum America Clean all make them. Aerus dealers STILL push that their garbage Home Solutions paper bags are the best. If you buy a new Aerus machine and bring it in for service under warranty and it doesn’t have a genuine bag it even if it’s a HEPA aftermarket bag, (depending on the owner of the shop) you’ll void the warranty. Absolutely ridiculous, I cannot think of a real reason Aerus doesn’t make HEPA bags for the other machines…my only thought is that maybe you’ll bring the vac in for service if the motor wears out prematurely from dust leakage but that’s honestly unlikely.

So having done some measurements on electroluxes in the past I have to wonder did you block off the electrical contact area when you took suction readings? Cuz those things will leak quite a bit and when the hoses inserted they will be sealed off. I generally find it best to insert a snug fitting tube into the inlet to get around that and get a better reading

It is important to remember that the Convertible back in the 70s was like $100. But $100 in 1975 today is about $560. Just subscribed! Great video. I have a Kirby model 519 built in late 1959-early 1960. It isn't the most powerful machine I own, but it does still clean my home very well considering its age. I did a complete rebuild and modified it to where it uses HEPA filtration. I also installed a 4-row roller brush to groom the rugs better than the standard 2-row. I have mostly hard flooring, runners and area rugs, so it meets my cleaning needs. However, if I had mostly carpet and very little hard flooring, I would honestly say that there are better options. I do own a Kirby Diamond Edition, also, and a Royal model 2028 upright, but my old machine is lighter and easier to use in comparison. I rotate them when cleaning, and use certain ones for certain jobs. Though I love them all, there are some newer vacuums I really like, too, such as Sanitaire, Sebo, Miele and Lindhaus. I wouldn't mind owning a Sebo Felix, Miele canister or a Lindhaus hf6 canister. I love My Kirbys, but I sometimes wish I also had a machine with on-board tools. It really is more convenient.

The one problem in have with the new machines is that you have to spend almost a grand or more to get one of these great vacuums. I have a filter queen, a kirby, and new sanitaire. I love them all. I do question their filtration. Im not sure why, and i think its because i can examine the dirt, i prefer my filter queen to all of the machines. In terms of all around functioning, i love my kirby. But i always think the brush roll on the sanitaire is superior to the other two. I just tossed the Kirby bag out from the last 7 months. It was nice and filled. I am going to get a filter queen home defender. But i have no interest in a new vacuum. I dont like the hoses on any of the new machines. I like the perfect hose and the filter queen hose. To me the sebo and meile hoses both fill a bit less expensive. But they say they are great and crush proof. The older vacuums have heft. The new ones just dont feel good in MY hand. When needed, i will pay the money and purchase a new filtet queen. Something about the machine has all the things which are still important to me. If the old kenmore whisper tones were available i would have purchased one of those over my sanitaire. 🤷🏼‍♂️ The vacuum companies know what they are doing. I would have purchased a very small canaster with a filter queen hose and power head. But alas they dont make them like that

Don't let the feel of the crushproof hoses dissuade you... they are a huge improvement over the vinyl hoses in terms of splitting, electrical shorts and kinking. I can tell you from a repair perspective, the crushproof is better by miles.

I played with a Sebo E3 today (much improved over the C3.1 I owned years ago that was traded for a Miele Blue Moon still in use thanks to its retrofitted Vortex motor). I do wonder if Sebo will migrate any of their X7 brush features to the cannister powerheads? The E3's powerhead had a few minor tricks my 15 year old Felix lacked like power indicator lights and a little quieter operation but otherwise seemed the same design.

I doubt we will see any of the X7's party tricks on the ET-1 power nozzle, namely the servo height adjustment and pressure clutch. They weren't designed for it an there really isn't any room to spare under the hood. It would be cool, though!
What I would REALLY like to see on the ET-1 is a headlight.

I love the old vacs being made of metal and the cool desigs . but i will not trade my Sebo D4 or my Sebo Felix for a 30,40,50 year old antique . great video. Im building a new house and want to install a built in central vac during construction. Looked at a Modern Day . would u recommend a MD or something else ? Great video . u do these videos so well .

Hey Mark, thanks for watching and the comment! Glad you are enjoying those Sebo vacs.
Modern Day is far and away my favorite central vac manufacturer. The build quality and customer service simply cannot be beat. They are more expensive than a lot of other brands, but if you compare the build quality and performance side-by-side there is just no comparison. HIGHLY recommend them, particularly the Silent Master series.

Ah, but are you buying the right new vacuums, that is the question! Truthfully, the old machine will work fine if you do not have allergies. However, if you have allergies, you'll see much better results with a unit that is sealed. Cheers!

can you run more modern bags in the vintage electrolux? like you can run a modern bag in a 1979 kirby tradition and get modern filtration...... well it probably still might not be as good as a bypass vacuum but it is way, way better then the original style 1 paper bags

Aerus does have a fleece bag option for the Type C Electrolux canisters. I believe they are the only ones to make a fleece bag in that style.

Some of your claims about the newer Aerus machines aren't quite correct. Firstly, all Aerus canister models have new motors in them that has increased their power as compared to the 2014 models. In addition, all the canister models now have HEPA pre-motor filters in the bag compartment. These new filters feature a removable carbon layer for de-odorizing. With the addition of the HEPA quality bags, only clean air is getting out of the bag compartment. Another point is the after-filter on the exhaust is a multi-layer electrostatically charged media that is more than sufficient to capture the motor's carbon emissions. There is almost nothing coming out of those machines. Aerus has recently discontinued their top-level machine and will be introducing a new model later this year.

Thanks for watching and for the comment!
At this time there is only one Aerus canister with sealed HEPA or active carbon filtration... the Lux Guardian Platinum. The Lux Legacy and Lux Classic are both electrostatic filtration only. Yes, there are polypropylene bags available, but those aren't quite the same has having a sealed HEPA system.
On both the Legacy and the Classic the electrostatic filter is pretty close to being only symbolic. There are air gaps all over the place prior to those filters. Between the two body shells, the back motor cover, cord access port, the clips for the top cover... there are too many places that are not sealed to list.
Going back to the Lux Guardian Platinum, the price is right around $1300. For that price you are getting a machine with captive rear wheels, a vinyl hose with captive wiring, a power nozzle design that dates back to the 70s... there are just a ton of items that Aerus has never bothered to make competitive. That price point is super competitive and both Miele and Sebo have them beat on cleaning capability and modern feature sets.
      Cheers!

Please, could you do a video explaining that 12amps does not mean more suction. 12 amps is an advertising gimmick. Its a constant point that I have to explain to my clients. It's only a measure of the amount of electricity the vac consumes.
Btw, I own a Sebo, love it!

Lol you are so correct most vacuums across the board are going to be anywhere between 10 and 12 amps because a standard household outlet is 15 amps so it literally cannot have more draw then that. Amps is only how much power the machine is drawing from your outlet doesn't determine how well the machine works. The best example of this is the old Sanitaire vacuums only making between 5 and 7 amps but yet have way more airflow and better agitation then any 12 amp hoover or bissell store bought machine...

Except that not all plastic bodied Aerus/Electrolux models actually have a sealed air pathway. If you are going to run a HEPA filter, best to use it on a vacuum that can make the most of it.

USA market Bosch canisters. While not old, they were cool and are getting harder to find. I'm working on trying to complete their lineup from the early 00s.

  • @markdalbey

No, they don't make things like they used to. When I was working on cars people told me that all of the time. They said you can't sit on the roof of a new car or stand inside of the engine compartment like you could with a 57 Chevy. Why would you want to? Most 57 Chevys had no a/c got, 12 miles per gallon, made a lot of smog, and were close to impossible to start on cold mornings, but you could sit on the roof. When I was a kid we had a Kirby. I guess it was a good vacuum for the time. It weighed a ton though, that is what happens when all of the parts are metal and there is no plastic where the parts can be made of plastic, that is pointless weight. When you turned it on a cloud of dust came out of it. HEPA was not even thought of and you got to breath in everything you vacuumed. It sounded like a jet engine, noise wasn't a big issue back then. You could shampoo the floor with it. Though we never used that feature, we always hired a company to do that. They don't make them like they used to, in many ways they make them better.

When the current vacuum cleaner industry starts putting the customer first instead of profit, thereby producing solid RELIABLY DURABLE equipment instead of cheap, crappy, bloated priced plastic landfill trash produced under the slave tyranny of communist China, you’ll have substance in what you advocate, but NOT until then. These modern vacuums can have all the fancy higher end latest technological developments incorporated into them, but when they are also purposely designed to fail repeatedly so that excessive profit can be made at the customer’s expense in repair bills or in being forced to purchase a replacement every few months or within a year or more, they will continue to be shunned by those of us who know better. I’ll take an Electrolux Model XXX any day, any time over any of those plastic pieces of rip off garbage - I don’t care how “effective” or convenient they appear to be. In addition you lost any potential respect from this viewer after you started you video discussing reliability, then quickly, and surreptitiously changed the game to performance from that point till the end.

    • @HouseOfVacuums
      @HouseOfVacuums  3 роки тому +1

Just wow, you'd think we were talking about religion and not vacuums. I want to address a few takeaways you had that were misinterpreted.
I never recommended poorly made machines or those made in the developing world under questionable labor practices. The Sebo that I was comparing is over 90% sourced and built in Germany... soooo, I don't know how we got on the topic of Chinese machines. Don't believe me? Check the teardown video!
      ua-cam.com/video/O_iXluAjKSs/v-deo.html
Second, the decision of whether or not a newer vacuum is best for you is really a cost/benefit analysis... it isn't a binary decision of good/bad. My point is that it is GREAT to have vacuums that last a long time. I'm a HUGE advocate of that. Sebos will easily last 20-30 years when cared for. However, there is a point at which you will get diminishing returns from an old vacuum and that is what I was addressing. Reliability and performance are both factors, so again I wasn't trying to bait and switch but rather encompass the whole thought process.
Ultimately, the decision is up to the consumer. If you are happy with an Electrolux that doesn't clean or filter as well as current vacuums, that is just fine. But don't assume that because it is new that it is low quality or made in China. Yes, there are many brands out there that produce throw-away machines and I will never advocate those. In fact, if you take the time to watch my other videos I bemoan the state of many brands frequently. However, there are a lot of VERY well made vacuums out there that will clean better, filter better and last decades... you just won't find them at WalMart or Target.
      Cheers!
