Yeah that’s true. The Raiders had him do these absurd FG try’s, like 65, 68, 67 yards. He had the leg to do so, but they always kept trying just to break the record. Just shows how much of a threat he was and how much they trusted him

Kickers aren't drafted early because they aren't drafted early. Sounds stupid, but teams seem to have agreed not to draft these positions early, so it's unwise to spend a first or second round pick on a player that would likely still be available in later rounds. Drafting doesn't happen in a vacuum, and since there are more contested positions teams go for those instead. But in terms of value compared to draft position I agree, kickers are drafted way too late.

Granted it still wouldn't make sense to draft someone like Tucker in the first round, but once you get to rounds 5-7, if there is a possibility of a K/P being amazing, it's well worth the pick imo. An average kicker is worth more than some rotational player you might get in rounds 5-7.

That Justin Tucker field goal still bothers me because on the previous play there was a blatant delay of game that was missed. This wasn't even a a case where the ball was snapped right after the clock hit zero, but when you actually look at the film where the play clock is visible you can see it hit zero for over a second before the center even starts moving. I have tremendous respect for Tucker and what he can do, but had the referees done their job correctly, that kick likely wouldn't have even been attempted.

There was a third kicker in the SWC that should be mentioned in the Erxleben, Steve Little story and that’s Tony Franklin. All three kickers were hitting 60+ field goals in college. What was also failed to mention is that college kickers were kicking field goals off tees. Franklin was the only one of the three that made the adjustment in the pros.

You can draft a spectacular kicker or punter in the first, but there are SO many intangible factors that make a good kicker and there's enough talent available later and after the draft that you might as well save the 1st round pick for something more important that you're going to see on the field more.
It seems that the prevailing thought for most GMs is that a good kicker is a luxury that you stumble in to. Stephen Gostkowski and Morten Anderson were 4th rounders, and Adam Vinitieri was undrafted, for example.
