If the game comes down to a missed field goal, it's evident that other players 'missed' in terms of missed blocks, assignments, penalties, interceptions, fumbles, etc. Expecting absolute perfection from kickers is not reasonable.
I’m glad you brought up Morten Anderson. Almost every time the Gary Anderson miss is talked about, Morton isn’t brought up. And the part that gets left out, even with that miss Minnesota was up by seven. And the defense let Atlanta tie it. Then go out and let the offense do it again in OT, losing by a FG. These kickers are always the scape goat.

Fans egged his house, dumped manure on his neighbor's yard, and threatened him and his family with death. He then refused to take a 30% pay cut from the team in the off season and went to play for the BC Lions. As a Lions fan I thank the crazy fans from Sask, because Paul was amazing for BC over the years. One of the best ever. On a separate note, Saskatchewan fans got cans of beer banned from their stadium for years because they once got so upset during a game they started throwing full cans of beer at the opposing team's bench and almost led to their team forfeiting the game.
@j-wilk4835 they are usually pretty good with everything else. Their main problem is that the CFL is their only big sport, so their fans get REALLY into it. So a better comparison is probably certain college football markets where there are no other big sports teams.
Parkey got WAY too much crap for that missed kick. I mean, he’s not the first kicker to miss a 43 yard FG lol. Their obsession with that missed kick cost them their window.

Yeah, there’s all the famous missed FGs in the playoffs. One that sticks out to me is John Kasey in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Right after tying the game with like 2:00 to go he shanked the kick off, giving NE the ball at the 40 yard line. And of course NE got deep enough to set up Adam Vinateria to kick the game winner.
Kansas City's Jan Stenerud is one of the few kickers whose career didn't flame out in the subsequent seasons following a big miss. In the famous Christmas Day 1971 playoff against Miami, Stenerud kicked an early 24-yard field, but he later missed from 29 and 32 yards, then had a 42-yard attempt blocked in overtime. Eventually Miami went on to win what is still the longest game in NFL history, 27-24. Stenerud, however, would go on to kick for 13 more seasons in Kansas City, Green Bay and Minnesota. He and Morten Andersen are the only two full-time kickers enshrined in Canton.
Awesome idea for a video. I’ll never forget Cundiff missing that chip shot sending my Patriots to the SB. Also a huge fan of both SRS and ATB. This was the collab I didn’t know I needed!
It’s cool to see kickers and punters are finally being treated with respect across the board. Not just the 2-3 future HOFers at any given time. And I agree with everyone else saying if a missed FG lost that game, then a lot of botched assignments happened long before the kicker got out there.
If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t the double doink ever so slightly tipped by an Eagles player? Ik it never gets talked about but as an Eagles fan I’m almost sure of this
A kicker’s confidence really is everything, and missing kicks in big games can really affect it. Watching this, it’s no coincidence that Tyler Bass really struggled this season following his miss against the Chiefs in the divisional. If it wasn’t for his franchise-record kick against the Dolphins, he probably would’ve been cut.
No reason for him to get down. Nfl never would have let kc lose anyways. The refs don't let kc lose. He makes the kick, refs say illegal formation or false start. I remember the double doink like it was yesterday. I was living just a little north of Wrigley Field and had my two Vikings fans friends from Minnesota over to watch the game. As I was having an existential crisis after the game, they were trying their hardest not to laugh .
It's not an obvious block/deflection unless you watch different angles of the replay. The fact that it double doinked was also just such a sensational highlight that it overshadowed the fact it was blocked.
Forgot to mention that Tyler Bass was actually in the hot seat before the Miami game he secured his job thanks to a franchise record kick no bills kicker has made a kick further than Bass We tried out 2 kickers and kept one on the practice squad the kicker was released after Bass made the kick
Well let's remember this was a Vikings team wit an aging but still elite Adrian Peterson at running back and teddy Bridgewater at QB who at his best was a decent game manager type QB I guy that could make the right play avoid bad turnovers but even at his best you were never expecting a teddy Bridgewater led offense to light up scoreboards add in the frigid temps and the legion of boom defense near the hight on their powers and 9 points wit no TD's isn't as bad as it sounds
What about Eddie Murray's missed 43-yard field goal in the last seconds of the 1983 NFC Divisional Playoff game against the 49ers? And note, he had made a 54-yard field goal earlier in the game which was both a Lions and NFL playoff record at the time. He had a slightly worse 1984 season but went on to play another 12 seasons including two season, 1988 and 1989 where he led the league with a 95.2 percent FG percent for both years.
It's funny that kickers are basically the insurance policy for the entire rest of the team if the team fails to do their job and the entire rest of the team fails so often, on so many teams, that there is only one non-kicker in the top 50 scorers of all time in the NFL and maybe like 5 or 6 in the top 100.
As a Jets fan, I think of Doug Brien in the Divisional Round in 2004. There was already late kicking drama the week before in the Wild Card and 8 y/o me was heartbroken when he missed two game-winners against Pittsburgh with the AFC Title Game on the line.
Didn’t the double doink get slightly tipped by the Eagles? I don’t know how much impact it really had or if it made much of a difference but I feel like I remember someone getting a finger tip on it.
Nick Folk also had a bizarre comeback with the Patriots where he wound up LEADING the league in kicking after his disaster in Tampa. Also good for consideration would be Zane Gonzalez from the Browns and his early season disaster.
Also, parkeys kick was blocked. On replay u can see an eagles player get a few fingers on it, that's more than enough to change the trajectory of the kick. It wasn't a double doink miss, it was a blocked kick that still almost went in
For the Cundiff Kick. 1st and 10 was a 9is yard catch by Boldin. Sideline judges signaled first down when it was really 2nd and 1. Ravens made their 2nd and 3rd down play calls as if it was first down. Did not realize it was 4th until late and rushed everyone on, rushing the kick. At that point just take the delay and make it a 37 yarder, difference is negligible.
If I was a head coach, I would require my kicking unit to live a monk-like life of complete isolation from the outside world, and I would hire staff to cover the scoreboards when the kicking unit is on the field. These measures will hopefully remove the high stakes stress element from the equation, as the kicker would have no idea what the stakes of any given kick are.
These exercises are not "standing ball" kicks such as you would see in Soccer or - more similarly - Rugby. It's a TEAM exercise; snap, hold, kick whilst the linemen try to prevent a block. It is by no means always the kicker's fault when a kick is missed. It is far more usually some very slight discrepancy in the snap-hold sequence which causes the kicker to have to make a minor adjustment, and the ball goes slightly wide. If the kicker is usually good, but has a bad run, it would be wise to look closely at the snap-hold sequence before summarily dismissing the kicker because, if the problem lies with the snap-hold process, changing the kicker won't fix it. May even make it worse.

He still should have made it, but this is a detail that I didn't notice until watching the clip a few times in this video.
Norwood didn't have much power, even for the era - his kickoffs were constantly landing outside the 10. In his last season they brought Brad Daluiso in as a kickoff specialist, and there were more than a few people wondering why we didn't try him instead in 1991 - including 8 year old me attending my first Bills game, at the LA Raiders, when Norwood missed 3 FG and a PAT - before making the game winner in overtime.
Quick side note: Nick Harper, who recovered and ran back that fumble before Vanderjadt missed, was in the news earlier that week because his girlfriend stabbed him in the leg. So if your wondering how big Ben stopped a nfl db in the open field, thats why.

Players in the NFL become insurance agents, realtors, and carpenters after they are done. Just like players in the NCAA become insurance agents, realtors, and carpenters after they do not make the NFL.
Its always going to be Norwood unless someone misses a shorter one that cost them the Super Bowl win. Even if it were shorter, does a missed 20 yarder matter any more than a missed 40 yarder?
On a random side note, Walsh missing those FG’s for the Seahawks in 2017 cost them the playoffs n also a 10-win season that’d have put Wilson as the winningest QB through six seasons n only QB to have six 10-win seasons to start a career (n eventually kept him from having nine 10+ win seasons to start a career). I can’t remember, but it also seems like it kept something from Carrol too. Lol, Russ (+ Carrol) used to be our guy(s) so I *HATED* Walsh for that.

I genuinely think that if Trubisky’s Bears won against the Eagles, his career would have taken a different turn
I saw Gary Anderson and immediately stopped the video. My heart can only take so much.
Love the use of the Simpsons (Homer looking at the stars) music at 12:10.
As a ravens fans I get chills everytime I hear the name cundiff
You should’ve included Nate Kaedings miss against the Jets in the 2004 Wild Card round
I remember watching the Bill Walsh missed kick and calling that he was going to miss it before it happened.
Oh yeah? How many kickers have missed 2 extra points in a row?? I'm not sure but as a Washington fan I can tell you Seibert is one of them!
It should've never gotten to the Cundiff miss. Lee Evans had the ball in his hands and simply dropped it.
As a Niners fan, I would take Parkey right now over Moody.
Quick side note: Nick Harper, who recovered and ran back that fumble before Vanderjadt missed, was in the news earlier that week because his girlfriend stabbed him in the leg. So if your wondering how big Ben stopped a nfl db in the open field, thats why.
I’ll never forget that eagles & bears field goal lol man it was 3 days after my son was born & I ate McDonald’s the night before bc I was starving from being at the hospital lol so my old lady’s mom said go home & watch your cowboys vs Seahawks playoff game, it was a Saturday night so on my way home I got the big Mack dollar deal thing they had going and got 2 & ate then watched the game & cowboys won. Then I seen in my email my W2 just came through so I actually filled my taxes that night & went to sleep late that night then the next day even before my eyes open I new I was sick & puked In the trash can by the bed. It was miserable & I think it was McDonald’s and got a case of food poisoning bc my body hurt couldn’t stay hydrated & light hurt my eyes & I remember waking up that night bc I slept most I could through the day & evening & watching this game with eye one bc the light hurt sooo bad lol
Yep I didn’t want to see the Eagles win that dang game
Walsh didnt choke, the holder made him kick laces. Big difference
This is such a good video
Parkey said it was gods plan for him to miss that kick
Nate Kaeding had some detrimental misses for San Diego
New rule... for every interception, the quarterback gets released.
As a Falcons fan, it hurts to watch this after last night.
Parkey had pretty decent stats in spite of the double doink...
He had a pretty good leg, but he was a little too accurate when it comes to uprights...
I don't remember Blair Walsh being good for the Vikings at all, so seeing his rookie season stats is surprising.
He was incredible as a rookie
The Vikings are in good hands now. Will the thrill is the best replacement rn
Blair Walsh- makes the only points for the vikings in that game, gets blamed bc he missed the last one.
Seahawks- SAW HIM MISS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE AND THOUGHT "this is our guy"??!!!????!!! I'm on team blair, it's always arm day!
Are kicks missed because of foot placement, ball placement, hip placement or counterbalance?
On a random side note, Walsh missing those FG’s for the Seahawks in 2017 cost them the playoffs n also a 10-win season that’d have put Wilson as the winningest QB through six seasons n only QB to have six 10-win seasons to start a career (n eventually kept him from having nine 10+ win seasons to start a career). I can’t remember, but it also seems like it kept something from Carrol too. Lol, Russ (+ Carrol) used to be our guy(s) so I *HATED* Walsh for that.
So glad we had Vinatieri and Ghost for like 2 decades. The opposite of chokers
Kickers doing get the love they deserve but they sure do get they hate they don't.
Cade York may be on this shortly.
My man ScHoolboy Q! Oxymoron is a classic album! 🔥🔥🔥
6:14 Parkey was 26, not 28
"... and he wore Hollister" LOL
What about Ray Finkle. Went on to be a chief of police, kidnapped Dan Marino and the Dolphins mascot.
How do kickers simply just.. miss kicks
How do Fortnine players simply just.. miss shots
Ruined him too. He was never the same after that miss. Same with Vanderjagdt in Indy.
