Never have I seen a developer embrace the community as much as Paradox does with Cities. A new community-made tutorial every few days is just amazing, I love it. Keep it up guys.
I'd say bungie used too in halo days but paradox and developers of the game cities skylines are good. Paradox dropped the ball a little with imperator yet they've picked it up or are picking it up no where near bad enough to ruin them though still a good company
This was probably the most helpful and simplest tutorial I've seen for making a realistic city. I always have trouble with terrain, but these tips were great!
I did some research in to railways a while back and gathered that for heavy cargo trains, the elevation change should by less than 1 m for every 100 m traveled which is virtually flat.
@@9airpods917 I mean people still need to have fun right. For creating realistic cities people should have some irl information though. In one of my cities I'm looking to create a railway with a max of 1:50 slope to compensate for the scale of the game. I might actually find this challenging as the vanilla map I'm building on has a really steep bit on one side.
@Arsenic Pills correction from Wikipedia, 1.5% ruling grade or 1:67 for freight trains, but metros can exceed 1:25 ruling grade. Obviously there are limitations in the game and some instances in real life where a trade off was made between capacity and construction cost. Also locomotives are a lot more powerful now than they were in the 1800s when railways were first built.
The other think is that rail was always there first! I don't like the maps where the rail bridges highways with a steep up across down bridge. The highway should always give way tho the train tracks, and either go under the tracks or over.
@@Czardus, don't know why, but when you are making those roads which follows the terrain, my heart feels warm. I felt it too in your Sinagua videos, especially when you are creating the layout for Jonesville. The train tracks isn't so much when it cuts into mountains, but it does when it takes a leisure trip through "path with the least resistance". Maybe it has to do with respecting the nature and incorporate it to create a beautiful and sustainable suburban areas. Keep rocking, Czardus!
I learned something new! I thought to have persistent contour lines while drawing roads, I needed a mod. Now I know how to use the in game elevation view while making roads. Big Mahalo.
This tutorial is one of the most interesting so far! Because this is what I never get to see really and I Think working with the terrain is really interesting.
extremely usefull tutorial, thank you ! what i still would like to learn is where, at what spots of the town to build warehouses, how to manage efficiently cargo, which transport to use for moving goods & actually how goods are being used at all in a town
Thanks for doing this one - too often, even with seasoned casters the idea of building a city is the flatten everything mode, which is often, for me, a negative aspect of gameplay. I understand that also the game needs some work on the way things clip to terrain but given the variety of mods available, I think can be worked around. [edit: Just watched Utilizing Terrain Elevations with Titan on this channel who actually advises how to work with the terrain in Vanilla - so mods aren't actually needed.]
Thanks for making this! I wish C:S map makers would watch this--too often their road and railway placements are garbage and I need to rebuild them all when starting a new map. BTW, what mod were you using to adjust rail height?
I can't for the life of me deal with more than one or two contour lines in my cities. Everything ends up "half underground/half exposed foundation" and looks like shite.
Pratip Biswas Well, America is very big, and there are many different styles in American cities (especially big cities like NYC and LA.) But if are talking about the *average* American city with 200,000 people or so then yes, there is a similarity between all of them. I hope this helped in explaining.
Well that's actually pretty straightforward 1. Grids, almost the entire road layout must be composed by grids 2. A tremendously big interchange cutting thru the city, usually 3. If you are going to do a big city, make a large downtown area, tall squary skyscrapers and classic goverment buildings I'm not american (U.S), but i hope those tips can help in some way
That's a problem cause if you use soil the game spend 1000% more time to load any save file. The thing that you did. Is far better do it in edit map, then load and play the map.
@@IngoGarza cause the map have default elevations. When you change them in game via soil. Tbe game must simulate whole changes before game load. And that spend 10x more time. Than load an edited map where you did the same.
Only problem: There is no “landscaping” tool in real life, so there’s *no* way a mayor can just *dig straight through* a hill! Edit: Just like in 2:13!

I needed a quick easy vid like this. I’ve picked up other tips about making good looking cities but now need to use terrain instead of avoiding it.
AddictedFoolGamer Glad you found it useful!
Fantastic tips 👍

The Hartford Image is close to home for me as I live 30 minutes from Hartford CT as a CT resident.
How far from FoxWoods?? LOL. I use to go there a lot back in the day before (Lincoln Park now Twin River) got a renovation.

Being from Colorado, I am obsessed with building mountainous cities. These tips will be so helpful! Thanks, Czardus!
Nice Video! Awesome Tips Czardus! 😉

I'm glad I saw your video I just started my new map. I also like your police cars on your steam workshop 🙂
Does anyone know if there's a way to lay down roads while the overlay map is active on Xbox?

Cities skyline is the best nd always awesome. This game is idol for other games in city simulation. Poineer for all coming games in future.
UMESH RANA it’s an amazing game!
@@Czardus offcourse bro...✌✌loved it
I usually just flatten the entire map.🤷♂️ Thanks for the creative ideas though. Time to start another city again.
Done that, it takes so much time lol
Slopes and hills help to make a much more realistic city!
Great tips, thanks for this helpful vid!
looking good czardus
I use too just smooth it and preventing the terrain to show up rock part until now. Now I know it normal to have some flat terrain.
well now... that was a real good tip!
Very good tutorial and tips.
I want autumn in my city
yea that would be cool. There are many autumn themed assets btw
Wow would be nice if season's were in the game
i want seasons! :)
how to remove the fog?

Well, time to redo my steep railroad tracks!
I've bought all expansion packs because I love this game.
Will there be a sequel to cities skylines?
Nice vid!
