Nothing compares to the feeing when Nintendo 64 came out compares to NES and SNES. I think it was the biggest jump a console has ever made. You couldn’t find one anywhere, and not because people were flipping them like they are today. It was a great feeling. Today, when Xbox Series X or PS5 comes out it’s like “meh, cool it’s a little better than before”. N64 was a game changer. This Render96 version is freaking amazing btw. Downloaded it a while back!

I think you may have missed the fact that render96's mission was to make the game look like the advertising. That's why Mario and Bowser looks kinda weird.

Some other small proportional differences exist as well, but it overall has a really old-school quality. This stands in contrast to, say, the Mario 64 remake on DS where the design of Mario was based on Mario Sunshine, Double Dash, etc. since his design had been a little refined at that point.
As absolutely awesome as this is I think it’d be a lot better if over time they worked on rounding out the level models because the characters don’t really fit in since they’re very rounded and well rendered while the levels despite having new textures are still really spikey, so at some point I think it’d be cool if they rounded out the levels a bit
Thanks for the video, I would definitely love to do another play through of this game with the enhanced graphics! Just some constructive criticism- The zooming in effect gets pretty old fast.
Fun fact: Dario, one of the guys who made the Sonic Generations Unleashed Project, actually has a code mod for Mario 64 in the works that adds true RTX to the game. And I kinda have the hunch you'll replay it with that again, right? =P
That thing that you did in whomps fortress (fall into the caged island) I already knew how to do it and when I grabbed the star Mario went “WWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOH” and it cancelled the “Here We Go!” Lol
Now what’s insane is when the OG came out it literally felt like THIS. It was so fucking crazy how good the graphics were. Of course I can tell the difference but as a 36 yr old watching it feels EXACTLY the same. Such a MAGICAL game in its time.

What's amazing is that this is a mod, on a source code port. This isn't a fan game, this is literally the same engine. Its unbelievable to see a genuine version of SM64 look like this.
This footage maybeee is actually 30fps; I paused the video and went frame by frame using < and > and it looked like it changed every other frame Also, you need to turn on the feature that removes the draw distance!
So I rendered the video in 4K, but it's only showing up in 1440p on UA-cam, not sure why lol; game still looks super crisp though!
