As a video game artist myself, here are some tips to improve your art design. You have some pretty big areas on the screen that only consist of one texture, it makes the overall presentation look flat. You can fix this with vertex painting, but you probably shouldn't just add noise, what really looks good for stylized games are gradients. Luncheon Kingdom and Lake Kingdom are great examples straight from Mario of how gradients can add a dynamic feel to large surfaces, try doing something like this but more subtle. Cloud shadows are a great way to add variety and visual interest to large areas of ground, this is something 3D World uses to great effect. Patches of visual detail can also help. For example, Cascade Kingdom uses vines to break up the visual monotony of cliffsides. Lastly, turn off the depth of field effect, the focus of Mario games is the levels not Mario himself, adding a big blur over the level very much violates your goal of "What Nintendo Would Do."
If Nintendo were to ever remake this game I hope they would use the ds version. It does almost everything better than the 64 version and adds extra content as well like Luigi and the minigames

We technically already have a fully playable remake on Mario 64. The PC port of Mario 64 along with Render96 is basically everything that we could ask for in a remake of this game. Luigi and Wario are playable, it has online and couch co-op, and it even supports modern features like Ray Tracing and Upscaling features likes DLSS, FSR, and XeSS.
I was ridiculously long convinced that you just forgot about the DS version, released just about 10 years ago! Can't believe that it's been 20 years...
I always thought that if it ever got a remake, it should look how the renders looked on the box art
If all these creators who started and (for legal reasons) never finished a Mario 64 remake worked together, maybe you can get Nimsony into your team and so on :D
Really cool. Good job.
The ONLY thing I want to know is if you kept all the speedrunning glitches intact. If so, imma spam all thw speedrunners I know to play this before Nintendo sends it's assasins your way 😅
You should add Waluigi and Wario next!
Nice. Also, levels and castle rooms would be more spacious, no exiting painting between stars, and lots of small QoL improvements like making entry to sand level more obvious, putting the speed selection for the clock level inside the level itself, making it possible to exit the pyramid etc etc. Haven't bothered to play the DS version so some of these might already have been addressed.
