And today I want to tell the story of one person's experience playing this game that was posted online. As he was unable to stop playing the game until he was brought to tears.

I think it's just kind of the Lonely atmosphere of the castle. It's just Mario and a few toads in this big empty area.
Tbh the only reason why there are story's like this is because of Rom hacks and the fact the game has little to no npc's in the game
Because of the atmosphere and also the way it sets the liminal space perspective take wet dry world and mix it with the boo house and you may get a giant underwater space where you're trapped which there is already a level like that but less creepy
