Chorus:
Hey, mother, father, sister
Hey, come back, trying, believing
Hey, mother, father, dreamer
Don't you know that I'm alive for you?
I'm your seventh son
And when lightning strikes the family
Have faith, believe

Who gives a crap what rolling stone magazine says? Steve Perry easily in top 5 best vocalist of all time
#1 and it’s not close. What did they say?? They also said their drummer wasn’t top 100, which is insane as well
No 1
when ask, my first thought is steve perry, and if they ask me for my 2nd ... bon scott.
Steve is #1. we all know it
I wouldn't wipe my ass with a Rolling Stone magazine
Steve P is one of the only singers who sounds in concert/in person exactly like he does on the album. The world lost an enormous gift when he stopped performing.
I love how the band leaves absolutely nothing left on the stage, they put their all into this performance and all the others! Love these guys!
Our generation had the best music ever!!
2024, and this performance still leaves me speechless.❤
Me too I get it
I was EXTREMELY fortunate enough to be at this very concert. Little did I know, when they said they were recording the concert that I would be watching/listening 39 years later on a phone, and that the rest of the world could also do the same!
The Summit hosted a lot of recorded concerts. I wonder if it was known for its acoustics
You were at this Houston concert???!!! Details, man! I need deets!!! Did it really sound this good? Did it sound even better than what could be captured on film and digitally?
Wow. I’m jealous.
Wow!!! What a cool thing to have been there in '81!!!!! 😎
Yeah we're on the phone but man I wish we we're back there again.
Steve perry, the voice. The only male singer to hit the highest female soprano note. He does it at the end of this song. U rock steve perry.
NOBODY sings this like Steve!!! Castronovo comes close, but still not the quality, control and power of Steve;'s voice!!!!! No one compares!!!
And to beat it all he don’t use falsetto he uses all head voice. Insane!
This is one of my favorite songs. His range!!! For anyone who wants to know....yes ! This is how he sounded live!!!! 🎉
Yes. I lived in Garland, TX for two years in the late 80's. Journey played Dallas and a girlfriend and I attended. Wow!
Pineda can not touch this. There is only one "The Voice" and your looking at him.
Actually the whole band Journey should be ranked much higher.
If you don’t get chills from this song you’re probably dead.
Agreed
How fortunate are we that such a high quality record of this concert exists? It makes you wonder what other moments of live musical perfection were lost through the years.
Well it was remastered for digital but I can vouch that they sounded like nobody else in concert. back then there were so many bands making the rounds in a lot of them sounded great on album but then you go and see him in person and they kind of fall apart a little bit. It was still fun to see them of course but not like Journey I mean from where these guys came it's not a wonder that journey is still together but man I miss Steve Perry's voice even if he doesn't hit these high notes
Wish I was a teen in the 80s, I’m here singing 40+ year old songs by heart and don’t even know or care for what’s on the radio right now
I was blessed to attend Journey concerts in the ‘80’s.. My first concert was in 1980. I totally fell in love with this band. It was a tight band and Steve Perry’s vocals were perfection.
589,000 views? This powerhouse of a song should have 589 million.
NO ONE CAN BEAT THAT VOCAL! Journey IS.... Steve Perry!!! He had his own class and his own style, which cannot be replicated.
There is NO Journey WITHOUT Steve Perry. He created the sound all the ones that have followed have merely imitated + strived to emulate. Kind of appropriate he fronted a band named "Journey." His vocals take you somewhere out of the here and now and into an emotional musical universe that delves into your inner-most depths. His soaring vocals have brought tears to my eyes more than once since I first heard and was captivated by them in my Sophomore year in college. And he has not stopped captivating me to this day, more than 40 years later. Love you, Steve Perry. ❤
Holy $%@ the vocals are out of this world man, not to mention the guitar solos and other instruments. Best vocalist on the planet, ever.
God kissed Steve, when he was born❤
The vocals are insane, the passion and soul in the delivery of his vocals are unmatched
His music is unmatched. Touches every part of your mind, soul and spirit.
When my 3 yr. old granddaughter asked me what angels sound like I played this for her.
Steve for sure!! Probably Karen Carpenter too!!
I love your response!!!
@@aliceshade6031 Thank you! The man's voice is definitely a gift from God!
Yes, Jimmy Wayne (Jimi) Jamison was a gift from GOD.
🤩
All due respect to current singer , but no one can sing rock / ballads like Steve perry . Wow
"Open Arms" has over 8M views and this one only two hundred-something thousand. NO, NO, NO....This is a masterpiece performance, people. SP's zenith, the absolute top.
I agree.
I seriously watch this every day. Freaking insane. This mans voice is the epitome of perfection. THE VOICE!!!
I also watch this every day!! Actually I start my day with journey and end it with journey. It's addicting. I never get tired of watching or listening. Even rusty Steve Perry's solo album. .. No more crying is such a beautiful song . Still loving journey with Steve Perry leading and I'm 63 now.. not impressed with the new singer. That's not my journey. Js
I’m glad I’m not the only one!!!!
Me too I play their music every evening
They are in Winnipeg, Manitoba tonight!!!!! I waited 30 years for this!!!! lol
There's a reason you didn't ever see any live (or studio for that matter) vocal performances like the one in Houston by Mr. Perry. They were simply unattainable. His vocal level at the end of this song is indescribable. His passion undeniable. The entire band at their height. I was gifted an opportunity to see them live twice in the early 80's. Once indoors and once outdoors. Zero difference in the sound quality of the performances. I still drive right past that rural outdoor venue every day on my way to work. There have been countless occasions when I swear I can still hear Steve's stratospheric vocals ringing through the hills taking me back to a time and place that I am eternally grateful to have experienced. So thankful to have grown up listening to the music of the 70's and early 80's. Too many great bands to list but Journey will always be my pick for the best in terms of overall musicianship across the board led by a generational singer named Steve Perry. Thank you for the memories men! All respect......
Yes, this is so true. Classic Journey...so hard to find a word to give them the praise they deserve. And as for Steve Perry, our music master, I absolutely adore both the man and his music. This song, his vocals and passion at the end, never fail to make me cry. One of a kind, an enigma, a gem!!
honestly gave me chills when I read this part ..."I still drive past that venue ... I can still hear Steve's stratospheric vocals ringing through the hills..." ....
At 57 years young I also was very fortunate to see Journey at JFK outdoor stadium in the early 80s. It was George Thourogood, Journey and the Rolling Stones. I was 16 and I have lived in Southern Delaware since 1976. I went with co workers and I honestly didn't care about the Rolling Stones. I went to see George T. and Journey !!!!!!!!! Steve's voice, the melodic rhythm, the power, the range, just everything about him was mind blowing !!!! Yes, his voice has changed as he aged but I adore him now, if not more, because he sings from the heart. His lyrics are fabulous. His new band is fantastic. And I personally think that his voice now is sexy , soft and beautiful.
Mother, Father is absolutely one of my all time favorites !!! No more cryin' is now one of my favorites . Both songs give me chills every time I listen to them. And that's alot !
He is still " The Voice ". 💙
And the way he expresses thru his hands !!!! He is so beautiful thru his soul and his voice. I personally don't think that, at least in my lifetime at 57 years young that I will ever experience such as " The Voice " ever again.
He's truly the best. !!!!
And this wasn't even one of his best nights, he was strained here. That speaks volumes that one a bad night, he's still operating at that insane level
I'm only 12 yrs old on that time but now I'm 52 yrs old Journey's songs always Remain.
One of the greatest live vocal performances of all time!
Imagine being able to sing like that!!
" THE MASTER " Steve Perry recorded this song in one take ! Who else does that ? He is the most talented singer in my lifetime. Thank you Steve Perry for the Magic you have given to us ! Forever grateful 🌹
Wow, who are the complete idiots, that ranked Steve Perry # 76 out of 100 in Rolling Stone magazine best Rock vocalist ?? As much as I like Freddie Mercury from Queen, he couldn't sing this song like Steve Perry. I saw Journey 3 times live in the 80's Steve never dodged the hard notes , he sang like no other since or after !!!! Truly the VOICE!!!
This song is underrated. Definitely one of his best❤️
It was never underrated.
One of THEIR best you mean.
@@DreidMusicalX This song was definitely never as popular as Journey's other ballads such as Open Arms and Faithfully but this song has definitely always been appreciated by Journey's fans!
There's a reason that Steve Perry has a nickname of "The Voice"...
Perry set a standard for this song that all the poor fellas in his wake can't match. Imagine trying to match those sounds.
This is the best song ever performed by Steve. His vocals were at a supreme high and unmatched by anyone even to this day.. Steve said in an article this song was difficult to perform, because of it's complexity and hitting the correct vocal range. He said by the time he finished the song he was totally whipped out. Exhausted.
This song is so amazing--very poignant. So true in 1981 and even more so in 2022!
When time travel is finally invented, first stop is to go back and see this performance live. 😎
Facts! I literally think this every time I watch this
Ich wäre dabei 💯👍💖Ich reise gerne mit in die Vergangenheit nur um Steve zu hören und zu sehen. 🙏
Time travel and ABBA for me
Take me with you
I did see it live. Baton Rouge,La.
Fun Fact: Steve’s vocals for the studio recording for Mother Father were done in one take. No punch ins.
quite possibly the finest vocal performance ever! Absolutely incredible
Take quite possibly out of your sentence
Very true. His voice is mighty incredible. Unique voice. Unmatchable
Listen to 3 Dog Night. 3 great voices with perfect harmonies. You’ll change your opinion. Journey has better songs but 3DN had 3 great singers that could easily keep up with SP. Sadly, Cory Wells, one of the greatest singers ever, died in 2015 but the other two still live and still sing beautifully.
Possibly? 😂 HE IS THE VOICE ❤
Steve Perry es el sello musical de Journey indiscutiblemente guste a quien le guste el taiwanesa canta bien pero para su desgracia una copia jamás reemplazará lo original al sello Steve Perry. Un maestro. Saludos desde chile
I can totally undersrand why Steve Perry said this song takes a lot out of him. This was amazingly brilliant!
Rolling Stone put him at #76 out of 100 on their best vocalist list. RS is crazy. He’s easily the best
RS is full of S**t anyway...
Rolling Stone Magazine is, always has been, and probably always will be, ridiculously and narrowly biased as to what stands as valid and hip. Nonetheless, they still stubbornly cling to their long-rendered, obsolete viewpoint. From my perspective, for what it's worth, the decline started as early as 1979.
He's in the top 10 for sure - Jon Anderson from YES is amazing and powerful as well.
He should be #1
I agree, he has one of the most unique and phenomenal voices in rock ‘n’ roll. He deserves to be in the top five, no questions asked. But he is definitely more than deserving of first place
I saw the new kid Arnel last year at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs. I loved Arnel. SP is the Pavarotti of rock. I'm so glad I grew up in the 70s! Thanks for posting this one. SP parents divorced and I think he's singing this to his parents.
This is why he's The Voice. A lot of vocal coaches use other songs as examples, but THIS song and THIS version should be the only example anyone needs to prove that Steve was an amazing vocalist.
Did you know Jon Bon Jovi is the one who gave him that nickname? True story and they are great friends. Steve is THE best.
IS an amazing vocalist. He still is.
@@melissarom3880 Yeah, I knew it. I'm a huge Journey and Steve Perry fan.
@@tammyf.7864 Steve is a great vocalist, but age and lack of use has caused his vocals prowess to less since 1981, as it does with every vocalist. Today, he is great (Traces is a fantastic album), but he's not at good as he was on this tour or in this performance, hence "was".
@@douglasskinner6348 To me, the fact that he's still alive means that he still "is." None of us sound the same vocally at 73 years old. But as someone who has been a HUUUUGE fan since I was a teenager when Steve hit the scene, he will ALWAYS be "the best that ever done it." 😉
Worlds greatest singer hears this and says dam I'm not the greatest how do you top that stuff, and also truly underated drummer Steve machine gun smith
I saw an interview with Neal and they asked him what his favorite Journey song was and he said "Mother, Father".
Steve Perry was at his incredible prime during this tour . His vocals are unmatched..
Why are they so underrated😭😭😭 look at the views on this video
I wonder if Journey had any idea that people would still be watching their live performances 40 years later😄
This performance is absolutely amazing!! Dont worry guys this live performance is immortalized on the greatest hits 2 album. So it wont be forgotten. Steve Perry has the best voice of all time in my opinion! EVER.
Holy shit, Perry could sing his ASS OFF back then. I have always loved his voice and the passion he sings with. The note he hits at the end of this song............
Those notes at the end in falsetto are actually much easier than what he sings in the rest of the song. The versus are INSANE.
You are correct, Kala. Steve Perry had no ass after this concert...
4:52 is angelic.
Perhaps the single greatest vocal moment ever recorded, in my opinion.
I agree
I’ve watched/listened a thousand times…chills every time. Most beautiful sound in the world.
you are completly right ,he gives all there, amazing voice I was 15 then
Eu gostaria que essa parte tivesse durado mais tempo. Um canto de um verdadeiro anjo.
An absolutely masterful performance by a legendary vocalist and band. Kids today, take note. This is artistry at its finest.
i am in the mood for all Journey today
I still can't believe he nailed this song in the 1st try in the studio when they recorded it. Amazing.
Every day I look at this performance.I watch it ten or twelve times in the road
those vocals at the end are insane! i can't get over it
Neither Steve Perry or Journey was ever as successful apart as they were together. THEY WERE MAGIC TOGETHER ❤💖💋👍
I was there Nov of 81 it was a night of nights Journey was in thier glory blazing and heartfelt now crystallized in my heart forevermore
I will be forever glad and thankful Steve Perry was born. He is a gift to the world! Unmatched and amazing voice.
I have to say just how incredibly blessed I was to have grown up in the 70s and 80s and has someone as talented as Steve Perry to listen to. I remember discovering them and having my naive school girl crush on Neal. Now, I see his true colors. But Steve Perry…..that smile, shy and sweet personality…. and a voice that could reach the Heavens above. I see him now with his gray hair …. so many of my heroes have past on …Elvis..Freddie…. Steve, stay with us a long long time. You are a legend. You are something so special. And here come the tears…I miss those times back then. Getting the sleeping bag out and laying in front of the TV waiting for them to come on ….Midnight Special …Don Kirshners Rock Concert…special special times. Innocent times…❤
Well put.. didn’t seem midnight special with them on, but remember open arms as being the first journey song on the radio that I paid attention to. Since then I’ve owned all of journeys records with Steve Perry fronting the band. And grateful to have seen them one time.
Ohhh, this one kills me with its sad beauty, emotional chord changes, and the man who sings like an Angel. I love it so much that I am truly unable to express it!
A masterclass in singing by the true master of singing.
I was in my teens/20s in the 80s but have only recently become a Journey fan. Back then I was serving with the army in Europe and I never heard a thing about Journey. I don’t think they were even big back in the U.K. where I am from. I might be nearly 60 now but I am so glad that I found them, and especially Steve Perry, via Netflix’s The Greatest Night in Pop documentary. Imagine having to go through life and never knowing that Steve Perry existed! So yeah, I am very late to the Journey party, but thank goodness I eventually arrived.
The song does so much more than give me chills, it is one of their best performances I have ever seen, like I said they were definitely magical, Steve's vocals, the way he draws you in, his emotion, his stage presence, oh my goodness not to mention the instruments the way they are set up on the stage they just sound so Kick-Ass together, and the ending of Steve Perry on that song it's just heaven sent 🫶, and let's not forget Jonathan Cain , kudos to this great Superior band of the 70s 80s,, may they forever remember the Great Joy they brought to others God bless .
The difference in SP’s performance of a song is the honesty and passion he gives each song…in such a commanding, clean and precise way… He also has the amazing ability to easily improvise and sings with perfect pitch 👏🏼💯🌹❤️💖
In awe and blown away as always with Steve Perry's vocals. He stated in an interview this was one of the hardest songs he has had to sing, yet he does it flawlessly. Especially at the end..the high notes. His voice is liquid Gold..
Steve has the voice of a Rock Angel.
Steve really shows his true talent in this song
Excellent ! I'm in awe of his voice ! Mother Father showcases that range only he can do.
Hello Deborah,
how're you doing?
Your comments caught my attention
and that is why I am reaching out to you.
Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you!
It's nice meeting you here.
@@user-nk6lk3ig4vrbvz❤❤😂😮😅😊
Holy shit…that voice…OMG! OMG! That human instrument…nothing like it!
One of the best vocal performances By Mr. Steve Perry ever!!
I mean, who has better vocal control than this?❤️
Those notes he hits at the ending continue to haunt me after over a decade and a few hundred listens out of the same CD. Absolute magic.
Steve really masters the vocals on this song. You can tell it means a lot to him.
Lightning struck my family the summer I discovered Journey…..1981….. I couldn’t listen to this song for over 20 years without crying……
Hello Maria,
how're you doing?
Your comments caught my attention
and that is why I am reaching out to you.
Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you!
It's nice meeting you here.
Steve Perry simply put owns the mic with unprecedently skill not seen before or after his prime.
There are simply no words for Journey man. The only thing I can say is, I'm happy this was recorded for future generations like me.
WOW!! This song from the Houstom concert is truly amazing. I was there, just rocking with everyone. Loved when they toured and we'd go to Houston. Truly Unique VOICE. #steveperryfan4ever.❤❤❤❤❤
Steve Perry put Journey on the map. Even Journey today still lived off hit songs from the glorious Perry era.
I think this is so iconic because they all leave it out on the table and wring everything from within for this performance. Truly otherworldly!
**CHILLS** still today!!
I get extreme chills when I listen to this Steve Perry Neal Schon everyone are so incredible
I was in 6th grade and Pres Reagan was shot. At 17 he was my first CINC. Journey was with me my whole HS years. I give the the rest of my days to be back in 85.
There is just no example of this kind of passion in live music today. These guys totally rivet the audience's attention without video screens or effects. Just musical excellent and total performance expression.
What a Song, what performance!! What a emotional guitar solo👏
GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER MY ARMS LISTENING TO THIS TONIGHT WHILE CELEBRATING STEVE PERRY's BELATED BIRTHDAY (Jan 22)!
My God he can sing!!!!
Steve said this was his most challenging song to sing with Journey. Never will there be another Steve Perry voice. Incredible..plus he does the Steve March which I love and remember so well! God he was good.
Amazing to think that if you listen to the studio version, he had more range than this. Absolutely incredible.
What a gem. Steve sings his heart out. The bridge / lead with Jonathon and Neil just beautiful.
This Is an Absolutely a Masterpiece! The Arrangement is phenomenal!!! Steve Perry's Vocals!!! Timeless!!!!
Everyone remember this is LIVE!!! What a voice!!
God he was incredible!!
There is no one like steve perry i saw him in concert in Puerto Rico in the amphitheater and i was literally right in front of him and this man sang and gave another of the best performances i have ever experienced!
He literally sounds like an Angel!
The band at their peak. Phenomenal.
steve perry's range is unmatched & here's proof of a singer who's voice is god given & can be imitated but never done as perfect as his voice is , never will be another steve perry, period
Amazing band and such and undervalued song. Exceptional playing and Steves vocals are beyond brilliant - even Freddie couldn't do that.
Yeah, 40 years later and still amazing. Masterpiece. Piano, vocals, guitar, drums, bass...all incredible
Steve Perry, my my my. I love Mother Father, his emotions in this song, his voice, his vocal range, his facial expression at the end as he killed this song! Jonathan Cain's piano solo, was amazing, my favorite version of this song.
