  • I was feeling stagnant and finding it hard to concentrate, so I set myself a challenge to get me out of the house and clear the fog from my brain. I tried to run 5 kilometres every day for 31 days in October.

9:45 that feeling you're talking about is often referred to "runners high", which is when your mind just becomes clear and running feels as eazy as taking a stroll.

the other day i ran my first race on a last minute invitation from someone, a very hilly trail run 10k. i had no time to train, a shitty old pair of road shoes, and the furthest i’d run before was 4 miles at most, so i totally exhausted myself at the beginning and on the hills. but around the last 2ish miles i just started to feel so good, almost giddy, and taking in energy from the other runners and the volunteers at the aid stations. the finish felt amazing, and i’m really hooked now. just sore as hell.

@@harrisonbrand8985 yeah doing a big distance straight out is a good way to get injured. Been feeling it myself after recently getting the running bug again. Trick is to start short & slow gradually increasing mileage per week by no more than 10-15%. Zone 2 heart rate is also optimal for long runs which is a really hard (slow) area to stay in. Can feel like your barely exercising but it is the best for increasing fitness.
Hope your training is going well!

There's actually 2 different things at play here. The "clear mind" effect is different from runner's high. It is due to our brains entering meditative state. At walking speed, our brains has plenty of capacity left for thoughts other than spatial analysis. But when you're running, your brain, who is not used to the task, needs to "focus" more on keeping up with the surroundings. The most important thing for your survival is to decode everything that's appearing and happening around you, the other people, the cars, the terrain, etc. So your brain will clear up any other thought and just focus on that alone. This is not a mindful process, it's an instinctive task running in the background, but it's enough to keep you from thinking about other stuff too hard. So you enter a meditative state. That's also why some people love driving (especially long drives on easy roads, not city traffic). At high speeds in a car, the brain does the same and you feel like your mind is clear, uncluttered.
With runner's high, you experience euphoria through the release of endorphin. It's bliss. It's not reliable though and it typically happens after at least 30 minutes of exercise. But it does feel amazing.

After a 20 year hiatus I started running again at 58. The first 3 - 4 months were torture. But I stuck to it and got fitter and fitter. Three years later I am now 12 kilograms lighter than when I started and I'm training for my second 100 kilometre ultramarathon. In my first 100km I was passed in the last 5kms by a seventy year old! I don’t disagree with you in principle. You should not push your body if you feel discomfort or try these feats if you don’t have enough condition. If you are not new to running, don’t have pain while running, and have decent mechanics (180 spn cadence, not over stride) then this is a non issue. I was about to stop watching and file this under "another guy who runs hard for a few weeks and gets injured". But at 1:20 into the video there's this whole "distance over speed" thing, and I'm like "ooh, maybe this is different". Lo and behold you smashed it, especially proven by your last day. I wish more people would realise that running is good for you if you learn from others mistakes. Awesome effort all round. I have done 5k RED January (with a couple of half marathons thrown in lol) but I was previously running 10k alternate days so it was just spreading out the same distance over the days. Good video and you'll enjoy the half marathon. If you push for speed sometimes, read up and give yourself time to adapt to faster paces, with rest days and not increasing weekly mileage at same time as increasing pace. This way will be better for your knees AND your brain.

Really nicely put together video, and I was pleased to see your sense of satisfaction. Just be careful though, you did make a few running no-nos, which dramatically increase your chances of injury. I ran about 188km in a February month a few years ago which is the most I’ve ever managed in one month. That February was storm, rain, strong winds but just you get out there and get it done. A couple of years later but well done on your achievements.
I’m starting back training in running after taking too long out due to pandemic, and personal stuff. Have put on heavy weight and lost all fitness so no target yet such as 5k a day, I’m just aiming to get out and do some running every day. It’s tough but want to get back to a good place.
Thank you to everyone that read this and all the very best to you in your running efforts going forwards. Well done for all those that you have completed.

Ditto, I changed my running style to “barefoot running style” it’s more of a running on the balls of your feet rather than heel to toe. It lets the muscles in your calf and Achilles cushion the impact rather than your ankle/knee taking all of the absorption from the heel strike impact. Try it for a minute or two and if you hate it switch back

    • @WhenWillILearn
