God I still cannot get over the donkey transformation scene.
I really love the movie but I have genuine trouble getting past the donkey transformation scene even as an adult cause it’s too sadistic. It’s sad cause I absolutely adore the characters of Pinocchio, Gepetto, Figaro, and Clio. They’re so sweet and animated in such a gentle, charismatic way. I agree with you 100% Figaro is the cutest Disney cat. It’s definitely why they gave him the dual role of Minnie Mouse’s cat too.
It gave me nightmares as a child and as an adult, I can appreciate the artistry in Pinocchio, but I still think that the movie overall is kind of mean spirited.
@@swanpride As a kid it kept me up at night scared, even as an adult I do not watch the scene. The kids getting their human clothes torn off while screaming that they want their mothers and the guys putting them in crates and taunting them is just too much for me to watch even today.
@@Nightman221k Same here. The implications of the scene are just horrifying. What will happen to the boys who didn't transform completely? What will happen to the ones who did? What will their poor parents think? How many other boys will end up on this island?
I would never say that Pinocchio is a bad movie by any means, but it is still pretty far down on my favourite list, because I am unable to watch it.
@@swanpride Really if Bambi traumatized kids with the thought of losing their parents, I'm surprised Pinocchio didn't traumatise parents with the thought of getting their kids snatched away to fates worse than death, especially since it's only a mild fantasy analogy of some horrors in real life.
As the third part explains, that is the whole point, sure, it's a hard truth that was worth telling, but it's one that completely nulls out the whimsy this film still wants to bask in. It's hard to go back to an idealistic happy ending for the main characters from that point on. I think it's why so many appreciate Pinocchio but don't really wanna go back to it like they do the other films.
The donkey scene legit put me off Pinocchio for years, and only recently have I watched the movie in its entirety. I’m damn glad I did, cuz the movie’s great, but I can say with 100% absolute certainty that I have no intention of enduring the horrors of Pleasure Island ever again.
This was a trip down memory lane. That opening especially, hearing how English royals had to quell parent’s fears on the film goes to show how almost a hundred years later parental concerns haven’t changed. Oddly the scary scenes from Pinocchio never bothered me, nor the creepy forest scene in Snow White or death in Bambi. It was the daddy gorilla’s death in Tarzan that would make me sob uncontrollably as a kid. My dad somehow took scissors and managed to removed the death from our VHS copy so we could watch it without me crying because it was an every watch occurrence 😅😅😅
Tell your dad a VHS player has a forward running funktion. You just could have stopped the movie and run the tape forward for a few seconds.
Many VHS players also have a fast forward option.
@@CordeliaWagner He was trying his best. Leave the man alone.
Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for mentioning Geppetto and the artistic achievement behind the character. Even to this day, he remains one of my favorite Disney fatherly figures. His voice is so much like my own grandfather as well, so there’s that little extra bias attached to it.
And yes, Fígaro is absoLUtely the best Disney cat.
Fígarooooooo 😭😭😭🥺
No clue if it was one of the more difficult animations to pull off or not, but for some reason, the flooding water in the Sorcerer's Apprentice always impressed me the most of any other 2D animated water I can remember seeing. Again, not sure why. Maybe it involved a lot of short cuts, too. Who knows? I just love it, though.
The dramatic music in your videos is sooo good 👌
y'know. my school had the original version of pinnochio in the library. the kids library. for elementary age kids. i read it and was just so disturbed and confused.
harry potter was banned though
I absolutely love this video essay, don't get me wrong. There is just one little thing I'm having my doubts about. It's the story about how the audiences reacted at the premiere, and Walt vowing to never put that much work into a picture again. I have my doubts if all of that really happened. I think it was the failure of Fantasia later on that started to crush Walt's dreams of such perfectionist and expensive films, because they simply were not financially viable. It became clear that they couldn't count on every film they made to be as successful as Snow White. I think this led Walt to even resent Snow White for years, as the big success that he could never come even remotely close to equal for an intangible reason, no matter the advancements in animation and artistry. Only Mary Poppins, released in the 1960s, came close to touching audiences as Snow White did. Supposedly, after Pinocchio's disappointing box-office, he said that it was artistically and technically superior to Snow White, but lacked the latter's heart appeal. That was probably the only way he could find to rationalize why Pinocchio didn't repeat Snow White's success. And that depressed him.
Pinocchio: I'm the darkest disney film the hunchback of notre dame: am i a joke to you the coachman: yes
I know Don Bluth credits Snow White as his original inspiration, but does anyone else see WAY more of his golden age tone and storytelling quirks in Pinocchio? This feels like the film that would’ve inspired him to create scarier imagery and tell more dramatic stories when he left Disney, even if that’s not the case.
The only thing I'd disagree with is that the 30's were the animation's best age - I don't think there was one.
Other ones which are often forgotten are the 70's, the time of experimentation and pushing the boundaries (mostly in the adult animation area) and the 2010's which made animation more accesable and more widespread than ever.
Like MGM's version of Wizard of Oz, Walt's Pinocchio defined the story from then on. Countless versions have been made, and very few stick to the original character of Pinocchio as the bratty boy. Even GDT's Pinocchio is more Disney's version than Collodi's. Walt's interpretation is a remarkable fable of innocence and virtue in a corrupt world, with intellectual depth and girth. It's unmistakably biblical in its moral compass, and the foundation for the secular spirituality that has become the cornerstone of the brand. Pinocchio, Bambi, and Fantasia are also meditations on the idea of animation itself, animals and inanimate objects given agency. Walt's instincts were impeccable during those years.
One thing I was reminded of when you mentioned Geppetto's kindly voice: I believe it was in Jack Kinney's book "Walt Disney and Other Assorted Characters" where I read that Christian Rub was the meanest man he'd ever met, an actual nazi sympathizer. Lots of good tea in that book, without any filters.
Speaking of filters, the green tint that is in the current "cleaned up" version of Pinocchio is so distracting to me. I have an earlier DVD with a warmth to the color that is indelible once you've seen it. I don't understand the logic of changing the tone at all. Walt hired the greatest color stylists in history to make the film warm and inviting, and he would not approve of what the corp has done to his masterpiece.
Fantastic work. I enjoyed this sooooo much. Thanks.
I can’t even THINK about the donkey scene too long. It’s instilled such a fear in me even to this day.
Everywhere in the world people are going to far worse...
This is worth the wait, and that's no lie!
Thanks!
Your profil pics are so similar I first thought it was the same.
@@cepahreinholt8710 Haha well while we are not the same person, we are very good friends with the same cat!
I watched Pinocchio as a kid, someone tell me how I wasn’t traumatised by this film
Yes! I love Figaro! He makes the horrors of the majority of the film worth it, and while I still love Cheshire Cat the best, Figaro is a close second.
Odd. I always seen Pinnochio as a endearing movie with only a few dark and unsettling scenes like the donkey scene.
you probably are someone that was already subjected to something so traumatic you're completely desensitized and literally nothing can scare you anymore
Pinocchio is an Italian fairy tale adapted to animation by Disney. It is a great movie. PLEASE don't make a live action version. Who knows what Pinocchio would look like. I shudder!
Too late. Sept. 8, 2022, Disney made a live action remake of Pinocchio, and it SUCKED!
Don't mind me, just casually re-rewatching your Pinocchio videos. Great job ! I love the way you describe your thoughts, very articulate
Thanks so much!
This channel needs more attention
Thanks!
Nice work as usual Fudd! I'm so happy to see your channel grow especially after years of making high quality content!
Thanks!
It took almost a decade to perfect Sleeping Beauty so I’d add that to the list of artistic achievements.
100% agree on Figaro. But don't you do Rabbit dirty like this! All he wsnts is some peace and quiet and for everyone to stop trampling all over his vegetables
I agree completely! But only when it comes to Movie-Rabbit. Book-Rabbit is a different story. Specifically his role in the chapter "In Which Kanga and Baby Roo Come to the Forest and Piglet has a Bath."
@@therewillbefudd Has been a while since I read Winne The Pooh in its entirety, but doesn't everyone act kind of terrible in that story? I don't think he's as bad in the rest of the book
@@juliamavroidi8601 True, the rest of the cast could have easily made the list as well. Really just a book about a bunch of jerks learning to tolerate each other cause they don't have anywhere else to go. I love it.
@@therewillbefudd I mean, it's true: Rabbit isn't the nicest character, but I mostly take issue with his placement above Peter Pan xD
@@juliamavroidi8601
Not to mention Zeus, John Smith, etc.
In my and other's best opinion is that what makes a good adaptation is creative intent and integrity for the material being adapted. For example, let's compare the original Pinocchio with both the good Disney animation and the bad live-action remake, and you'll see something rather interesting in all of them.
The first two have defined characteristics and differences between them that affect the world around them and create the necessary story that the writer(s) wants to make. The first one seems to have wanted to criticize taking care of kids in the most mean spirited fashion it could muster, and the second wanted to praise it in the most honest, good-hearted way that it possibly could.
Our new one, on the other hand, just wants to show us their new Pinocchio, which is arguably as much of a crime as Zack Snyder's Batman.
If all you're going to do when adapting a character is show off your own version of the character without respect or acknowledgment for the source material in terms of knowing what the original source was about and putting your own passionate twist on the beloved source material, A) make an original character, B) make it into a modern, faithful and perfected remake or C) go on an internet forum and write a fan-fic or leave it on the cutting room floor.
I really like the moral messages of this film tho. When i was a kid I was scared of this film to the point I couldn't watch certain parts of it. But fairy tales was not supposed to be warm and cuddly but had deep mythological roots and deep moral messages.
Pinocchio imo was about teaching responsibility and listening to your elders which he has to learn to be a real boy.
He does not listen to his dad and go straight to school he ends up going of with strangers from being enticed with fame and from there makes a series of bad choices all culminating in him getting into some real trouble and literally transforming into an ass or his nose growing longer but not being honest. He has to go into the belly of the beast to learn from his mistakes, and yes despite being naive and exploited they are very much his mistakes, in order to return to his dad and its only then he becomes a real boy.
Now disney is not interested in actually teaching kids and people in general valuable lessons they are more interested in perpetuating the idea that the world is at fault not you which is why they won't be timeless. They keep making messages to suit modern audiences which is obsessed with identity and invidual grievances which is why disney is declining.
All of that is going to change once I get a job as a 2-d artist at Disney. Just you wait and see. My fantastic 2-d masterpieces will teach kids and people in general valuable lessons and morals. They'll be like a homage to the old Disney films. Disney will get back on top again, I'll make sure of that.
7:00 Okay now I'm really interested in seeing your Pooh analysis. XD
Wooo! Clicked so fast when I saw there was a new TWBF video!
Well structured introduction focusing on the main characters and how Disney evolved them into great renditions of some previous characters from other sources. Also very good narration.
Awesome, so awesome videos! Pinocchio is Disney's crowning jewel! Hope you continue with Disney fllms right after Pinocchio, such as Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi!
Thanks! That's the plan!
@@therewillbefudd Amazing! Looking forward to all of that!
7:01 I need you to do a full breakdown on why Rabbit is evil now.
Pinnochio did contribute to the fact that I am smoke free to this day. Even as a kid I know that I wont be turning into donkeys (not to mention its an area of effect from the Island's curse) but it did made me determined to stay smoke free
Exciting! I've been looking forward for this video for a few months now!!!
Hope it was worth the wait!
@@therewillbefudd absolutely 👍 these videos were great !!
This is the movie that creeps me out the most.
Once again, you've knocked it out of the park!
Thank you!
Thank you for the shout-out to Bianca Majolie, one of animation's unsung heroines. Women played a bigger role in animated classics than people are generally aware.
I'm so happy I found these videos, but sad that I found them so late. I hope we will see videos on Dumbo and Bambi soon.
Yes, Figaro is indeed the best Disney cat, because for once we see a roguish little kitten as an adorable pet rather than as a nasty villain. We didn't see cats depicted in a positive light in a Disney animated feature again until after Walt's death, in The Aristocats, and that film has some issues. Even with it and Oliver and Company in the mix, Figaro is STILL the Disney cat with the strongest appeal for those of us who know and love cats. He's just such a... CAT! (Insert Grin Emoji Here)
Glad I subscribed to this channel. Your channel is a rare gem that really shines with pure love for film/animation while making it entertaining for those who might not initially share that passion. Thankfully I'm also an animation nut, so excuse me while I go and rewatch these classics.
Agreed this movie was terrifying to me as a kid.
I'm 100000% on board for waiting as long as necessary for more of your videos, regardless of how much time there is in between uploads.
I really appreciate and love the care you've put into all of this, I'll be sure to share it as much as I can with both my friends and on my socials in order to help you gain more popularity~
Keep up the amazing work!! :D :D :)
Thanks so much! Appreciate the support!
Well, of course Elizabeth was able to endure it, she basically experienced her own version of the story in the previous year. In a blink of an eye, her life changed forever. Her Uncle David threw away his Kingship to get married to the Nazi-loving bitch, Wallis Simpson, leaving her father, Albert (now known as King George VI) to pick up the pieces. David may not have tried to kill Elizabeth physically, but he effectively destroyed her innocence and her childhood. One night, she was a normal ten-year-old girl with an eight-year-old sister and two loving parents, and then, the next morning, her parents are King and Queen and she, one day, would have to be Queen herself. Sixty-five million people would be looking to her as a leader. So, yeah, she already had her own partial Snow White experience. However, Elizabeth had thick skin and was able to endure. She eventually got her fairytale romance by marrying her dream "prince" (he wasn't officially a Prince until after they married), the strong and handsome Philip Mountbatten.
😂thought exactly same thing
YOU'RE BACK! Great video as usual, I look forwards to seeing the next two parts!

Bro the quality in research and production of this video is insane, well done!!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
Oh god i waited for this so long!
Goodness gracious thank you for the video essay!
The first male cat pet we had I named him Figaro. He got lost tho...He was always stealing fish from neighbors and going away in search of his primal urges
Great job mate, you my friend are a great storyteller.
This is fascinating! So interesting and insightful which is what I’ve come to expect from your channel.
Thanks!!!
He’s back! We were waiting for so long…
I’m super excited for the Pinocchio analysis! But first: let me grab some cookies and a hot chocolate...
Amazing video! I’m excited to watch parts 2 and 3! uwu
Thanks!
Hooray I love your stuff
Thanks!
I'll be honest. I really didn't like this story the first time I watched it, nor the subsequent rewatches. The animation, art, details and colours are great, but, like you said, child me knew all this darkness wasn't right. And it's not just that evil does because evil can. Evil gets you even if you haven't done anything wrong, it just needs to get you unaware. I'm finally seeing someone talking about how dark and scary it is, instead of how cute or hopeful!
Satoshi Kon's Paprika has a similar shot to 3:49. Neat.
Great video!
Thanks!
Thank the lord, it is finally here!
6:59 that is so true it made me burst into laughter
I've recently read the OG Winnie the Pooh book and I gotta say: Rabbit is an asshole
i feared and still do fear pinocchio to this day. the thing is, it’s the main character that freaks me out. i never knew why.
Another Figaro enjoyer.
Can’t wait to see your Cinderella video 👠
This channel will be big
Come on you ungrateful brats!!! Give him the likes he deserves!!! The video is amazing!!! Don't just watch it and leave!!
What's the name of the piano track at the beginning? It's so beautifully haunting and I love it!
"Allegro" by Emmit Fenn. It's from UA-cam's free audio library, as is most of the other music I use. Some good stuff in there if you're willing to dig around for it.
Thanks for mentioning Bianca. For all the success she brought Disney, he treated her like trash and tried to bury her name. I hold no love for early Disney films because of the way he treated women.
I really wished u would've talked about Lampwick more ...He's my favorite character and he(along with other Donkey Boys ) had The worst fate !
Pinocchio: Disneys' Darkest Nightmare.
The Black Cauldron: *_enters the chat_* You are just so adorable.
The Coachman: *_the literal Devil himself that wants to steal children, especially boys, get them drunk and high in order to sell them to circuses and mines as donkeys_*
Horned King: *_a literal walking corpse that is a necromancer kidnaps princess for some rule the world prophecy_* Never mind. I'm not that dark and creepy after all.
Can someone explain the evil literary characters become disney heros page because I’m intrigued?
1:57 yeah seeing Pinocchio's body basically face down in the water knowing that he is obviously dead yeah😮
I know somebody is going to say but didn't Pinocchio walk around underwater and was doing just fine and how could he be dead? Well simply put being technically crushed in a rock clif by a freakishly large whale will do that
Did Bianca Majolie inspire a song lyric in "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat" from "Aristocats"??
i feel like Scat Cat said, "Majolie, wait for me".
That part has puzzled me since the 90s.
Oh gosh why are the pencil tests you used 60fps interpolated 😭
OLIVER IS THE BEST DISNEY CAT ‼️‼️
Idk anything about pinocchio other than when he lies his nose grows longer😂. I wanted to know more about this since i was playing lies of p in which I'm guessing p stands for Pinocchio and also geppetto is mentioned and idk wtf am I doing other than getting my ass kicked by these super crazy bosses😂😂😂❤
I’d argue Black caldron and Hunchback of Notre dame is Way Darker.
7:00 I wanna see the whole list
Why there is a phrase of "No, children, you're wrong" in the thumbnail of the video
Omg your number 1 is gonna be Bambi isn't it 😮
Figaro FTW. #bestcat
Where did you see the first animations of pinocchio s animation?
It's from a 'making of' documentary, ua-cam.com/video/RdUx1RNoPkA/v-deo.html
11:31 why do you think he got his own series of shorts
Ok but why pick a lech to be Pinocchio's conscience? I don't like to read too much into things, but the rule of three compels me too point out that Jimminy has got a little problem. (1 hand on the doll's rump 2 insisting on cutting in to dance with another doll 3 ogling the flamenco dancers)
Regardless, I enjoy a bit of irony. Especially since Jimminy's role has evolved to this wholesome grandfatherly mascot.
Will a list be done for 7:00?
Haha, who knows!
3:46 - 5:40

TAKE THAT SIMBA!
FIGARO IS THE ONE TRUE KING!
I thought the film was fine how come it didn't do well
4:55 we still have tons of people in the US and the rest of the continents above and below us
Wow, this generation really is scared of everything. This movie is adorable Lol.
To think that Disney Co could have easily died early on... Instead of becoming a mega entertainment empire insitution, that created a suburb, Multi media (ie video games, movies, cartoons, ice shows etc ), cruise resort, multiple theme parks, and training programs (Micky Mouse U, all their corporate grooming programs for college students, and the teen shows that produce child stars, ie Spears, Duff, and Cyrus, Lohan etc).... all those deaths from stoned Californian Grads doing darwinistic thigns at Disneyland as well all the machines having an accident, the accidents in the suburb, all the child abuse with the stars, those suicides of mistreated workers....Ouch.. all avoided in some alternate dimension where Disney Co did collapse and all those deaths didn't happen.
I like the style of Pinoccio but I find the story and the characters boring. I watched it once on my aunts VHS, she has been collecting Disney VHS since the stone age. I didn't like it. I didn't find it scary, but each child is different.
I watched Pinoccio once as a child. I didn't line the characters and found the story boring.
I couldn't remember that it was painted in such a high quality.
High quality doesn't help when the audience doesn't like your story.
Walt wasn't smart if he didn't realize that.
