Collodi wrote ‘Pinocchio’ also as an indirect satire of the then Kingdom of Italy, as testified by Collodi’s vivid depiction of the gendarmes as brutal and dumb, and of the judiciary system as incompetent and corrupt. Most characters in the book live in a state of unredeemable poverty, without any help or assistance from their community, within a society dominated by backwardness and inequality.
As to the darkness of the original text, yes, it is dark indeed. I remember from my childhood of receiving at least two ‘watered down’ editions as gift: in one of them, Pinocchio is not ‘impiccato a un albero’, meaning ‘hanged (ie. by the neck) from a tree’, but ‘appeso a un albero’, meaning generally ‘hung from a tree’, like a salami. In the other edition, he is simply ‘legato a un albero’, meaning ‘tied up onto a tree’. Pinocchio effectively throws a hammer towards the Cricket, but the fate of the animal is redacted. Likewise, in my childhood editions of the story, nobody ever ‘dies’ as it happens in the original, but simply ‘faints’, a euphemism to indicate something like a coma. Believe it or not, I never read the original before the advent of the Internet. It’s not because the original is censured in Italy or frown upon: more simply, the editors of children books prefer to play safe and redact the most controversial parts so that their edition can go on sale without risking any bad publicity.

@@jessicapinkman-xm2egthe hell do you read? Original story is how children don't appreciate the sacrifices made for them and how in youth is easy to make mistakes that will make ypur life misserable, because young don't listen to older people advices and rebel against them. This book is so sad to read, especially about doll creator, shaking from cold, because he sold his last coat for book, so his "son" can be literate and live better than him.

I prefer the brighter 1940 Disney movie of Pinocchio, because I loved it with all my heart for its charming message and the kindness of my favourite puppet. I do like the book as well, not equally to the Disney movie, but because I feel it's still worth reading as children would understand what Collodi was trying to show them, using the original troublesome puppet as an example. Just like how Shakespeare created relatable characters to show the people what fates would await them

Thanks for the video- The original book was a lot darker and a lot different than the Disney adaptation with the Fox and Cat hanging PJ and the scene with the blue fairy had a poodle pulling a carriage made out of sponge cakes pulled by dozens of white mice was very imaginative - so imaginative that Disney did not even attempt it. I see there are under currents and directives to children to obey parents and to work hard (protestant work ethic) and go to school - else you will become a donkey (the GOP could have a field day with this). My son and I have been working on our own adaption PJ where the main character PJ is a teddy bear who comes to life when magic wool is used for stuffing and his nose glows red when he lies. We have made a trailer and hope to have the movie finished early 2024. Anyways your video has been quite educational - in our adaption Pinocchio now being PJ a teddy bear we try and stick close to the original story by Carlo Collodi which was pretty revolutionary for its time making inanimate objects sentient and alive and a lot of the tales such as the Fox and cat were to teach kids to avoid fraudsters and tricksters which has as much relevance today as it did then. Also the story deals with rebirth and has a lot of relevance to kids with disabilities that feel that they are not totally accepted as real boys - yearning to be accepted as real boys and the underlying message is that one can only be human if they are capable of empathy - caring for others which Pinocchio highlighted to the Blue Fairy caring for his Papa Geppetto

The original Pinocchio was also much more preachy and condescending. I think it could only have been written by someone who hated children. That's why I'll say the 1940 Disney version is actually 100% BETTER than the book. Not because it's less dark, but because Walt Disney understood children much more than Carlo Collodi.

    • @AV57

Nobody starts out bad. It happens slowly over time, beginning from seemingly innocent disobedience, but can get out of control if someone is too prideful and stubborn to admit when they made a mistake. Pinocchio reaches that edge a few times, but turns back and apologizes to his friends and families for not listening to their warnings and assuming he should trust strangers instead.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). God is holy and the punishment for sin is Hell. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He died on the cross and rose again on the third day for us all. Repent, believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and follow Him
